Thanks for all your questions. I am just about to get Paul on the phone.
Paul Biancardi (1:00 PM)
Welcome to the chat. The early signing period is officially over and we hope you checked out conference grades. We are looking forward to the late signing period in April.
Is there any hope KU can pull off another late signing period miracle and somehow make its '11 class respectable?
Paul Biancardi (1:03 PM)
Thanks for the question Ben. You're No. 1 today on the chat. KU can still have a very good class. Three guys on the board that could make a difference -- Ben Mclemore between Kansas and Missouri, Deandre Daniels and Michael Chandler is still out there. Any of those three would really elevate Kansas' class.
Prediction on where Adjehi Baru makes his decision? Any feel for when he'll do it?
Paul Biancardi (1:04 PM)
Baru, is one of two best bigs left on the board, along with Chnadler. Baru is thinking Maryland, Va Tech and UNC. That's who he likes and that's who has been on him the hardest.
Hannah (Weddington )
I am a HUGE TARHEEL fan and I know they had a rough season last year will Harrison Barnes and the other recruits make an impact on this year's basketball season?
Paul Biancardi (1:05 PM)
Tarheel fan, UNC went to the championship in the NIT, which is normally a good year but not for UNC. Barnes and the freshman class have made a huge impact on this team with their talent and work ethic.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Which High School Basketball Players do you think will be the Best at Syracuse?
Paul Biancardi (1:06 PM)
Hey Chris, out of the guys who are committed, hard to pick one now but if I had to project I will go with Rakeem Christmas. He has the greatest upside.
Sam (Nor cal)
How can dana altman have such a great class while everyone knows that they will be starting from the bottom of the pac-10?
Paul Biancardi (1:09 PM)
We are going to change time zones here, Altman inherited a program where it has to start over again. The reason he has a great class is because he's selling himself as a coach and playing time. Some players want to be part of changing a program and putting them back on top. He has a stud in Jabari Brown and a very underrated PG in Bruce Barron. FYI Altman is an excellent basketball coach.
Matt (Columbus, OH)
Have been watching the show and it has been great! For guys commiting Ohio State, how will those guys make the Buckeyes domintate in 2011?
Paul Biancardi (1:11 PM)
Thanks for watching our recruiting insider show. It really has been a lot of fun. The Buckeyes, with the recent commitment of Amir Williams, they have every conceivable position covered except for SG. This class has great length, athletic ability and a PG in Shannon Scott who can organize and run the team. Along with the current Buckeyes, with or without Sullinger, this is going to be a strong team.
Kat BI (Boston, MA )
I am huge longhorn fan and I want to know: How is University of Texas recruiting class in the next few years, and when will they be # 1, and win a national championship bc of their recruits?
Paul Biancardi (1:15 PM)
Hello Kat, if you're a Longhorn fan, you have to be very excited about the win last night versus Illinois. Texas has done an excellent job of recruiting. Tristan Thompson and Cory Joseph were top 100 guys impacting now and next year one of the PGs in the country, Myck Kabongo, will really make a difference. Coach Barnes has been coaching very well on the court and recruiting just as well on the road. With Barnes at the helm they will always be a top 25 program and that can lead you to a national championship down the road.
John P (En route from Philly to DC)
From a Maryland fan, any update on Baru? He would be a great addition to the 2011 class and the Terps team. I know Zeller going to IU must make a big hole at UNC but what are the chances we get him? The suspension is killing me
Paul Biancardi (1:17 PM)
John, make sure your not texting while your driving. At one time Baru was close to committing to Maryland, now it looks like he is going to look at the Terps more, but UNC is in the hunt as well. Those are his two favorites along with Va Tech. Expect Baru to make his decision late, however. If anything changes, we'll be the first to let you know.
Florida looked pretty bad versus Ohio State, please tell me there is help on the way. We need some bigs. Sullinger killed us.
Paul Biancardi (1:20 PM)
Hey Jerry, keep your head up even though Gators lost to Ohio State. Its a long season. Theres some tremendous help coming in Bradley Beal, the best SG in the country. He is the Ray Allen of basketball. He possesses great size at 6-3, great shot preperation, range and accuracy. There's no one on the roster like him right now, so when you combine him with the last year's class Florida is going to be knocking on the door of the SEC. FYI Sullinger is going to do that to a lot of teams. He is just that good.
What was the toughest team for you to grade in the ACC and why?
Paul Biancardi (1:22 PM)
Hey Chris, good question. It's never the best recruiting classes, those are easy to grade. I would say Virginia, which had an excellent class with a grade of B+. The reason its hard to grade because there weren't any superstars but it is an excellent group that is going to impact the ACC in a few years.
With the Terps close lost to Pitt last night it was obvious what Baru would mean for them next year teaming up with JW. What are you hearing as his camp seems tight liped.
Paul Biancardi (1:25 PM)
It was obvious the Terps need some help inside versus Pitt. I'm sure Baru either saw it or heard about it. When you look at UNC and Va Tech, you are going to see the same need for an athletic big who can block, rebound and score around the basket. We will just have to wait for the late period. More schools will start jumping in the mix as well and the Bary sweepstakes could get crazy. I'm hearing KY and Kansas are starting to sniff around too.
James (San Francisco, CA)
Before Sean Miller took over Arizona, it looked like they were facing a 4-5 year rebuilding. However, he has recruited very well and next year's class is elite. You think Miller can keep up this pace and return Arizona to her glory days under Lute?
Paul Biancardi (1:28 PM)
James, back to the west coast. In such a short time, Miller has done an outstanding job coaching and recruiting. This year's class is so impressive and as it stays together it could be the face of the program for years to come. Equally impressive was his first class, 2009, - when he signed five guys between April and June, all who have been excellent contributors to the Arizona progra. Knowing Miller as I do from his playing days at Pitt, there's no doubt in my mind he will get Ariz. back to a consistent level in the Pac-10 and NCAA Tourney, but you can't rush the process.
Paul, with the addition of Cody Zeller and the 2012 class that Coach Crean is putting together how soon until IU is in the top ten again?
Paul Biancardi (1:31 PM)
Curt, I bet you're still gleaming with the addition of Zeller. First of all, you have to get all of them on campus, before IU can reap the rewards of its recruiting labor. Both classes are outstanding and when everyone develops, that's when you will see Indiana back in the top 25, maybe top 10. You have to be patient with the process. That's how it works in college athletics.
Hunter Anderson (Nashville)
Who would you say leads for Alex Murphy and Rodney Purvis?
Paul Biancardi (1:34 PM)
These are two of the elite players in 2012. For Murphy, whose father, Jay, played at BC. Kansas, UNC, Duke, Florida (where his brother plays) and Arizona. For Purvis, the early favorites Duke and UNC neck and neck with Kentucky making a strong push.
Eric (Baton Rouge Louisiana)
What do you think of Johnny O'Bryant from LSU?
Paul Biancardi (1:36 PM)
This is an outstanding pickup for LSU. He is explosive, strong inside presence who rebounds and is physical. Look at LSU's roster, they needed a true strong inside presence and his body is college ready at 6-10, 240 pounds. He needs time to develop his offensive post game, but LSU will be running a lot of its offense through him in the future.
Tyler (Jersey City)
Rumor has it that Michael Chandler is interested in St. John's. What school do you think has the best shot at landing his services?
Paul Biancardi (1:39 PM)
All the high-majors that didn't get post guys will be taking a strong look at him. Seriously, UConn, Kansas, Kentucky, St. John's but after decommitting twice, it looks like he is going to wait until late signing period. Which is probably a smart move for him.
Dave (Queens, New York)
Hey Paul, im a big Louisville Cardinal fan. I just wanna know what our next steps our we missed out on some great recruits and we are in need of another Guard?
Paul Biancardi (1:42 PM)
Hi Dave, you need to go to our website and check out our grades lol. This class is outstanding. I know Ryan Taylor is on hold right now, when you look at their roster they are going to replace Peyton Siva and could always use another shooter. Louisville's roster is strong and few coaches develop players as well as Rick Pitino.
James (Los Angeles, CA)
Nick Johnson. He seems to me to be underrated as he's putting up 25 pts + a night at Findley. Can he move up in the rankings?
Paul Biancardi (1:44 PM)
Johnson is one of the guys out there who has the ability to continue to improve. He has tremendous ath. ability and ball skills, but what's going to make him jump is his competitive nature and work ethic. I love his approach to the game, whether he scores or not, he plays with great intensity, which is a sign of a great player.
Who do you think, if any, teams will jump into the top 10 class rankings by late signing period?
Paul Biancardi (1:46 PM)
One school that could jump into top 10. Alabama already has a great class and are at No. 15 right now by landing and securing local talent. If they land Trevor Lacey, which is one of his favorites, look for this class to make a jump. What a perimeter Lacey, Cooper and Randolph would be in the SEC.
Tyler (Jersey City)
With St. John's have 8 recruits and 6 of them in the top 100, how could they not be ranked ahead of Duke?
Paul Biancardi (1:50 PM)
It's because in our ESPN class rankings, its not solely based on quantity its based on quantity and quality. In our ranking system we put a premium on the higher ranked player and having Rivers (No. 1) and two other top 25 kids, along with another top 50 recruit they get the edge. Regardless, be proud of your St. John's class.
Chad W (Greensboro)
St. Johns signed 2 recruits from Quality Education in Winston Salem, We play them on Saturday. Got a scouting report for me?
Paul Biancardi (1:53 PM)
Chad, you need to get into coaching. Very perceptive, very ambitious. Here's my report on Pointer: Try to match his intensity because no one plays harder than him and try to keep him off the glass. Keep him out of the lane with his drives. For Meikle, make sure you get a hand up on his shot. He has a catch and shoot mentality. Paly him for the score not the pass. I'm surprised we haven't heard more questions like this.
Tanner (Nor Cal)
Hear any leaders for the services of 2012 - Brandon Ashley? He is a BEAST!
Paul Biancardi (1:55 PM)
Ashley is a long, athletic post with a ton of potential. He's a finesee 4 man who is an elite athlete. Early suitors include UCLA, Kentucky, Kansas, Cal and Arizona are in there strong.
How good will perry jones be this year at baylor?
Paul Biancardi (1:57 PM)
Perry has a world of potential. He needs to build his body up and learn more about the game. With that said, he just led Baylor the other night and he's averaging 14 points, 9 reb and 2 blocks. He has Kevin Durant-like skills. His talent is undeniable.
What are your thoughts on the talent that Alford has brought into UNM, basically reviving a program that was on life support. Thanks
Paul Biancardi (2:01 PM)
JR, not sure about life support, although Alford has done a terrific job. UNM can not go to tradition places to recruit. They do a great job of going where everybody's not. They get very few local in-state players that can make a difference. But last year they landed Alex Kirk, a 6-10 center. He will be a difference maker on the floor.
Paul Biancardi (2:03 PM)
Always appreciate the passion and enthusiasm for high school basketball recruiting. Thanks again.
