Beano Cook (3:03 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome. I am sorry about my pick of Clemson over South Carolina last week. I am now 7-6, trying to remain over .500. My pick will come at the end of the chat.
Will Heisman voters accept the NCAA's ruling and vote for Cam? we all know he's the best player in college football!!
Beano Cook (3:05 PM)
I will. If the NCAA says he is eligible, then that is that. My big problem is deciding who is second and third, but I will decide on Sunday.
So Auburn declares Cam ineligible three days after the Iron bowl and is reinstated less than 48 hour later? What new evidence did Auburn learn from Friday to Monday and how could the NCAA react so fast? It seems like the fix was in..
Beano Cook (3:06 PM)
Maybe it was, or maybe it wasn't. I won't accuse the NCAA of anything other than wanting to make money off of TV. The NCAA is no different than IBM, GE or any other company -- the goal is to make money.
Bryan (Loretto, TN)
Beano, doesn't college football have far and away the best regular season of any sport on the planet? While a playoff would better determine who's #1, it might do so at the expense of the awesome 14 weeks we see every year. Agree or disagree?
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
I agree on that. I feel we should have four teams competing for the national championship after the regular season. I have been saying that for a long time.
Ed (Lake Oswego, Or)
Beano, congratulations on winning the Bert McGrane award! Appreciate your contribution to my knowledge of college football, really enjoy listening to you and Ivan. Must admit I'm surprised you haven't won the award three times already, who have they been giving it too?
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
I don't know about that but I was shocked when I heard about it. Nobody has been that shocked since Sarah Palin.
bucky badger (wisconsin)
wheres the love for wisconsin? the talk is all the undefeated teams. 83, 48, 70 remember those numbers last 3 badger scores
Beano Cook (3:11 PM)
Yes, I am aware of that. The fact is they lost to Michigan Satte. It is a shame they didn't save some of those points for earlier in the season. Wisconsin and TCU could be a very interesting Rose Bowl.
Gary (Altoona, PA)
Any chance Jeter signs with the Pirates?
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
His salary would be more than the entire payroll...or close.
Has college football changed much during your lifetime? Has paying the players and stuff like that become less common?
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
Number one, it has changed in the sense that there was always a little hanky panky but now it is a big business than an amateur sport now. I really feel it is more like the NFL and what changed it was the money from TV.
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
To be quite blunt, money corrupted the sport.
Beano Cook (3:14 PM)
However, there is nothing like a Saturday afternoon in the fall, watching a college football game. They cannot take that away from the fans.
Chris (Charlotte, NC)
If Auburn and Oregon both win isn't a TCU vs. Ohio State Sugar Bowl pretty much guaranteed? Follow the logic: Auburn is #1 in BcS so Sugar gets first pick in replacments and takes TCU, Rose is #2 and takes Stanford (obviously), Sugar is #3 and takes Ohio St. the "Put Up of Shut Bowl" is in place :-)
Beano Cook (3:15 PM)
No, TCU is going to the Rose Bowl if they don't play for the national title. The Horned Frogs will probably play Wisconsin.
Joel (Niagara Falls/Buffalo) [via mobile]
Hello Mr. Cook, I remember something brilliant that you said, oh, perhaps twenty-five years or so ago. To illustrate the lack of any semblance of parity in the FBS (Division -IA), in comparison to the NFL, you challenged the moderator to pick just one NFL team while you select thirty NCAA football programs, and that one NFL team would win a Super Bowl before any of your thirty wins a National Championship. Do you still hold that contention ? Thank you.
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
Yes I remember that. I can pick out the 30 teams and feel safe and you can pick one NFL team and we can pick. I will say that 25 years ago I would have probably picked Boise State, so times have changed. The other prediction I made was the only way Vanderbilt made it to the Sugar Bowl would be if nine other SEC schools went on probation. I will stick with that.
Beano, watching Notre Dame over the last month it appears the defense has really picked it up. Do you think it sets them up to have a good year in 2011?
Beano Cook (3:18 PM)
I had a friend who really knows college football and he saw them play. He said they don't give up cheap penalties and they play every moment of the game. The biggest thing Notre Dame gets is USC will be down for the next 3-4 years.
Texas, Miami, USC ... which was the biggest disappointment this season?
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
I would say Texas this season. The Longhorns played for the national championship last year and now no bowl. The only team that had a worse year in Texas was the Democratic Party.
Who is going to be my coach?
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
If I am Miami, I am talking to Temple's Al Golden. Let me say that the program is in serious trouble since the administration doesn't know what it takes to win. It is a lot easier to hide weak students in a state university than in a private university. It is almost impossible to do it at a private school.
University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill)
It would have been great if the NCAA always worked that fast.
Beano Cook (3:23 PM)
There is no doubt that you have to cynical of the NCAA and this decision. Let me say it in one word...unbelievable. They have declared him eligible and that's it.
Kevin (Bend OR)
With the NCAA rule in place stating that if a family member requests money for a "pay to play" then the player is ruled ineligible, how are they able to make the most recent ruling? In the past they have been such sticklers to "by the book", and "we will look at it in the off season" that they look like they are making it up as they go to make sure that Auburn makes them the money instead of letting TCU possibly play in the Championship game.
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
The NCAA has nothing to do with making money in college football. As I said before, what has taken place makes you cynical.
Mark (New Orleans)
What do you think about the SEC Championship game? I am happy to see Spurrier there.
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
I am happy for Spurrier too. The big question is, will this be his last season as a coach. If he retires, I hope ESPN hires him in the booth as he would be sensational.
Will my Commodores look at Al Golden of Temple as the new coach...I know they should
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
I don't think he would leave Temple to go to Vanderbilt. It is a private school in a league with 11 state institutions. You cannot win consistently there. I understand Vanderbilt has great fraternity parties. Not as good as Amherst.
Cory (Hogtowne )
You really think Spurrier will retire this year? I think he has a shot at the national championship next year. No?
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
I did not say that. He might, but I hope not. I do not know if he is going to retire.
Do you think Connecticut deserves a bowl berth? O know they will get onbe automatically if they beat South Florida...
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
If they win the conference, yes. The team that wins the NFC West may be in the playoffs with a losing record.
Did you think Indiana had to fire Bill Lynch after the Wisconsin debacle?
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
Indiana football fans have to realize that you cannot win on a consistent basis there. It cannot be done going against those Big Ten schools. They can keep hiring coaches. Knute Rockne would not win consistently there.
Scott (Toledo, Oh)
Hey beano! Do you think rich rodriguez will get fired? If he does, do you think jim harbaugh will be offered the job? I think that would be a good hire.
Beano Cook (3:32 PM)
I don't know what Michigan is going to do. If they keep Rodriguez, he has to win next year. If they get rid of him, Harbaugh would make sense if he wanted to leave Stanford and go there.
Thoughts on Va. Tech-FSU this weekend?
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
Interesting game. We have a lot of good games. I am not sure who will win, same for Oklahoma-Nebraska. These are three excellent games. I do like Auburn over SouthCarolina. Tech won 10 straight after the 0-2 start. Florida State had a great showing against Florida last weekend.
Jeff (Mpls, MN)
Beano - any inkling on who the Gophers will hire for their coach? People say it's hard to win here but I'm not buying it. New stadium, major metropolitan area, etc.
Beano Cook (3:36 PM)
Not sure, a lot of names have been thrown out there. It is not easy to beat Nebraska, Michigan State and Michigan every year, plus facing Ohio State, Penn State etc. some seasons.
Dan (Pittsburgh) [via mobile]
Have you ever met Sidney Crosby?
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
I have met Mario Lemieux but not Sidney Crosby. Every professional athlete should be lime Lemieux...he is a class act.
What are the chances Miami gets Jon Gruden as the new head coach?
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
I think they want him but I don't think he wants them. Mike Leach might be an interesting name down there.
Beano - Many Nittany Lion faithful think Penn State is poised for a bounce back season in 2011.....10 wins or better. I am a huge PSU fan, but I don't feel as optimistic. The schedule is brutal (Bama, Wisky, Iowa, OSU, Nebraska) and I question the depth of talent especially along the O-line and D-line. Also, the ongoing uncertainty with JoePa is hurting recruiting. What are your thoughts on PSU for 2011 and beyond as the Big 10 enters a new era?
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
They play one tough game early (Alabama), then a bunch of tough ones early. Can they beat the tougher Big Ten games on the schedule ...
Beano, what is the rational behind Auburn losing to SC and still making the title games vs if Oregon loses and everybody seemes fine with TCU going ahead of a 1-loss Oregon team. Seems like SEC bias to me.
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
There is a big debate whether they should. I think a 12-1 SEC team has to be considered. I don't think it will happen if Auburn loses. Oregon has to go to Corvallis; last year Oregon had problems with the Beavers at Eugene, winning 37-33.
David (OKC) [via mobile]
How about Bob Stoops at Miami?
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
Don't see that happening. Why would he leave Oklahoma for Miami.
Beano, how about that Auburn comeback in the Iron Bowl?
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
At halftime, I was looking for reruns of Hawaii 5-0!
Beano, are you going to watch Nebraska vs Oklahoma? Who do you think will win?
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
If I had to pick somebody, I would pick Oklahoma. I think it will be a very good game.
Do you think Derek Dooley is starting to get his legs under him now at Tennessee? Who would have thought them bowl eligible a month ago?
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
Let's face it, the reason the record is so good in November is playing Vanderbilt and Kentucky. It is a tough conference, he is not in the ACC. Tennessee did play well against LSU and played well for a half against Alabama and Oregon.
Cory (Hogtowne )
Do you have the WikiLeaks hotline number? I want to see if they can help me figure out this NCAA / Cam Newton thing.
Beano Cook (3:46 PM)
Very, very good. You should become a writer for SNL.
I hope Danno got the bad guy--but I hope you switched back over for the second half, too!
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
I never found McGarrett...thank god I stuck with the game.
How strange was it to have the USC/ND and UF/FSU games so insignificant?
Beano Cook (3:48 PM)
Very unusual indeed. It wasa big win for Notre Dame as USC had won eight in a row. I think the Irish will beat the Trojans for several years in a row now.
Andrew (MSU fans)
Isn't Michigan State getting screwed in the Big Ten situation? I know Wisconsin has been putting up a lot of points, but my Spartans lost just one game.
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
Yes, but that is the BCS and the ratings will determine the Big Ten champion. Michigan Stater will still go to a good bowl, just not a BCS bowl.
Auburn vs Wisco right now. Who wins?
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
Cosmo (Anytown, USA)
Who's the best leader of young men in your lifetime: R.E. Lee, Paterno, Patton or Lombardi?
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
I have no opinion on that. Believe it or not, Lee and even Grant were before my time.
People forget that Wisconsin barely beat Arizona State. I think Arizona State beats Arizona tomorrow. What's your pick Beano?
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
It is a good game Thursday night and I will watch that. I will watch the MAC finals on Friday night. I don't have a pick on the Sun Devils-Wildcats game.
Beano Cook (3:54 PM)
Time for my prediction. I am 7-6. I think Nevada will beat Louisiana Tech on the road, but i think it will be close. Emotional letdown away from home after beating Boise State. Nevada 38-34. See you next week, 3 pm ET.
