Beano Cook (3:02 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome. I apologize for my pick of Lousiana tech and I am now 7-7 for the year. I will break my rule and make a pick before the national tirle game (in a few weeks) and also the title game.
Just heard about Urban Meyer. So how long until he has another "dream" about high school recruits and decides to come back to florida??
Beano Cook (3:03 PM)
I don't think that will happen this time. He may come back and coach again, but not next year. He may end up somewhere else. He is still young (age 46). Where he will end up, I do not know at this point.
Neal (Cape Cod)
With all the conference shuffling about to happen (TCU, Nebraska, Colorado); what are the chances Boise State joins a real BCS qualifier conference?
Beano Cook (3:04 PM)
Not happening. I don't know which conference they would go in unless it was Big 12. Maybe geographically you could put them in the Big East...maybe not.
If Georgia gets beat by UCF is there a chance Miami will go after Richt? I know he really loves the Athens area, but with another sub par season, Georgia might get rid of him anyways. What do you think?
Beano Cook (3:06 PM)
I don't think Richt will end up at Miami. I don't thing Georgia will make a change right now. If he has a losing season next year, that could change.
Orville (Lubbock, TX)
Shouldn't Oklahoma be a 40-50 point favorite over UConn in the least significant, most boring BCS game? How bad would it be for Oklahoma to lose? That would make the loss to Boise seem like a win.
Beano Cook (3:08 PM)
They will play the game. Oklahoma may win 40-7....or it may be closer. Don't worry about it. My guess is Connecticut will show up. Oklahoma played to the level of its competitiion against Utah Stater and Cincinnati. The Huskies also beat Cincinnati. You never know. Oklahoma may have played its bowl game already beating Nebraska. On paper Oklahoma should win easily.
Cam for Heisman...does he have your vote?
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
Yes, I voted for Newton first, Andrew Luck second and LaMichael James third. There you have it, Newton is in the lead.
john (st louis)
being a pitt grad, I liked wanny but knew he didnt have what it took to win. what do you think their next hire is/should be?
Beano Cook (3:11 PM)
Pittsburgh decided to make a change. He did not win enough and if you don't win enough you are let go. I do not know which direction the school will go but I am sure Steve Pederson will go after some good candidates. Let's hope that he does a better job then he did at Nebraska when he picked Bill Callahan.
will you regret voting for newton if something goes wrong in the future
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
I have to go with the current situation. He is not guilty of anything right now. What if I didn't vote for him and nothing ever happens with those allegations...is that fair? I voted for Newton, period.
Does this put Louisville coach Charlie Strong as a front runner for the Florida job since he was the defensive cordinator at Florida durring Meyers run as 2006 and 2008 champion
Beano Cook (3:14 PM)
His name will come up. There will be a lot of speculation, This is a fresh story so let's see what happens.
Which conference shows the most bowl supremacy this year? Pac 10, Big 12, SEC, Big 10?
Beano Cook (3:14 PM)
The SEC is the toughest conference in the country, no matter what happens in the bowl ganes. Why argue with that?
Mike (Los Angeles, CA)
Beano: Thank you for another great year of chats. I assume you have attended at least one Army vs. Navy game. What is your fondest memory?
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
The scene. It is truly incredible. I wish I was going to this year's game. This is the first time in over a decade that both teams come into the game with a winning record. I believe that last time it happened was 1996.
Mo the Stripper (Chico)
Mel Kiper does not have Kellen Moore rated very highly on his draft Big Board. What are your thoughts about Moore's chances to go to the slate with power and play on Sundays in the future? He has flashes of greatness, but occasionally looks robotic, as if made of mechanical parts. But, he has a tremendous work ethic - I've heard that he works out and has 6-pack abs. Hit my lunchbag with your thoughts.
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
I don't rate the players for the draft like Mel and Todd McShay do. If Mel doens't have him high on his board, he is ususally right.
Giancarlo Toffoli (St. Jean, Canada)
Mr. Cook,What is happening to the Longhorns? It seems the team is able to recruit exceptionally talented players every year. Where have these All Americans gone? Could it be they are overrated or dare I say, is Mack Brown himself overrated?Thank you
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
Greg Davis is out as coordinator and other changes are happening. Listen, teams have a bad year once in a while. I think Texas can bounce back. Give Mr. Gilbert another a year at quarterback and the added experience should help.
I'm sorry, Chizik as Home Depot Coach of the Year? Did anyone see Mike Haywood take the Miami Redhawks from 1-11 to MAC Champions? Don't care if its a B or even C conference, this is a HUGE snub.
Beano Cook (3:20 PM)
Chizik took a team barely in the top 25 and has Auburn in the national title game. He is the Coach of the Year, though let's give Haywood, the former Notre Dame assistant some credit.
Looking at ND's 2011 schedule, if they beat a pretty good USF team to open, and pull out a win at UM, they could run the table, especially if Stanford loses Luck next year. And BK's teams usually take off in year two, am I crazy?
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
Notre Dame is Notre Dame and one of these years they will make a run at the national title. It is due to happen. It is hard to believe the Irish have not won since 1988. Notre Dame has its own radio network and television network, so the school should win.
Don't you love Miami-Notre Dame bowl matchup? Do you have one of those shirts and will you break it out?
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
Number one, I thought the shirt, Catholics vs Convicts was an absolute disgrace. If you insult Notre Dame that way, many people will complain. It is OK for Irish fans to insult anybody. Interesting game, one I will watch. Notre Dame has some momentum after beating the likes of Utah and USC. Miami lost to South Florida and lost Randy Shannon.
Isn't it amazing how head coaches start firing assistants after the season...can you say scapegoat?
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
That is something that never used to be done. I think that is happens because a coach is told to make a move.
Couldn't Minnesota do better than Jerry Kill?
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
I have no idea. It is not an easy place to win and that will continue, especially adding Nebraska to the Big 10 plus...
I guess my point on Chizik vs. Haywood is Cam Newton has gotten the majority of credit for Auburn's run to the National Title. I haven't seen many "coaching moves" that have turned around a program the way Miami University did.
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
You can make a case and what you say is correct. I think it is difficult for a coach at a Mid-American school to be named Coach of the Year.
Neal (Cape Cod)
Geographically, you could put Boise State in the PAC 10, and don't you think they would be a great addition to the PAC 10? Something like this needs to happen for the betterment of college football!
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
They have 12 teams and they will not expand any more.
Jim (State College, PA)
What are the chance of us losing Tom Bradley to Pitt?
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
I am not sure what Pittsburgh will do.
Want to apologize for dragging Bielema's name through the mud a few weeks back? Seems like everyone else understands that Indiana couldn't tackle and Wisconsin's offense is that good...except for you. And you admitted you didn't even watch the game.
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
What Wisconsin did to Indiana was wrong and most people in the media agree with me. Too bad they didn't score some of those points in the Michigan State game.
Isn't it ironic that Nick Saban is facing MSU? Spartans left out of BCS and now this...
Beano Cook (3:32 PM)
That is very interesting an it adds something to the game. I doubt that Mr. Saban has gotten much sleep after Thanskgiving Friday.
Rich (New Jersey)
Are there any interesting Bowl Games prior to the BCS Bowl games that you think are great match-ups?
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
I think there are some very good games. Alabama-Michigan State game, Florida-Penn State even before the developments today involving Urban Meyer. LSU-Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl can be interesting.
Jimmy The Geek (Birmingham)
Beano, what was your game of the year? Auburn's comeback in Tuscaloosa has my vote.
Beano Cook (3:36 PM)
Yes, I would go with that one as well. The game meant so much. The end of the Boise State-Nevada was memorable. A great game has to mean something. Michigan-Illinois was a memorable game.
Jacob (Washington, DC)
At what point do you think JoePa is holding Penn State hostage? We love him, but there's the thing about exiting gracefully...
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
I am anxious to see what happens at Penn State. My prediction is he will coach there next season but not in 2012.
Richard (Greensboro, NC)
Now that the coaching carousel has started spinning again I heard Bud Foster's name being mentioned for Vandy and Pitt possibly. It seems Bud doesn't want to go to a school like Vandy, but the better schools like Pitt all want someone who has already been a head coach. It's about the same thing I have heard for the last few years. What kind of school will it take to skip out on head coaching experience but still give Foster the potential he is looking for?
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
Foster has a good track record as a coordinator. There may be 50 names out there for the various job openings in Division I (I don't want to call it FBS). I believe Pederson has a short list of contenders for the job or else he wouldn't have made this move.
With Urban Meyer stepping down, will he go for the Michigan job, if they move on after their bowl game?
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
No, I don't think so. I don't rule that out and it is a good question. I feel Urban Meyer will sit out next season, maybe even more, bit I feel he will eventually coach again. I do not know when and where. That is it for Urban Meyer questions for today.
Wouldn't you like to go back to 1970 when we only had 11 bowl games?
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
Yes, that is a pretty good suggestion. I agree that there are too many right now.
Final Mike Haywood Point: Why don't they call it BCS Coach of the year then, if great coaches who make a difference to a program aren't given a fair shot? Give one of the big boys and award and award a half size trophy on ESPN8- The Ocho.
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
Nothing against Haywood, he did a great job. I like the job Chizik has done. We agree to disagree.
Does the BIG 12 expand at the end of this year? Or anytime soon?
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
They want a championship game so Nebraska and Colorado leaving means unless there is a waiver, which I don't see happening, they need to expand to get a championship game.
Why is Mike Leach getting so much publicity in the coaching carousel (both NFL and NCAA)? Did we forget the closet incident?
Beano Cook (3:46 PM)
Because he doesn't have a job, his name will surface in the rumor mill.
No game of the year vote for Michigan State-Notre Dame? C'mon the ending gave Coach Dantonio a heart attack
Beano Cook (3:48 PM)
A great game has to mean something in the national rankings, It was a very entertaining game, a great contest. Unfortunately it was not in the same category of the Auburn-Alabama game. The Iron Bowl was already a great rivalry. It had more meaning in the national championship picture.
TJ (Vermillion, SD)
what do you think of the nebraska vs washington part 2 matchup in the holiday bowl?
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
We have had this happen before but this is unusual because Washington got killed in the first game. This is a disappointment for the Cornhuskers, who came so close to beating Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game. It would have been a BCS bowl.
Mike (Somerset, KY)
Too many bowls? What about 16 team playoff?
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
That has been suggested 10,000 times.
Just joining the chat...thoughts on Kevin Wilson to IU? Can something positive finally come out of this program?
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
I wish Wilson good luck and he will need it. Tough place to win in football. It is virtually impossible to win on a consistent basis.
Tony (Lake George, NY)
Will Cam's dad be allowed to attend the Heisman awards?
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
I don't know...good question.
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
Thanks for the questions...see you at same time next week...
