Chat with David Ubben
Welcome to SportsNation! On Tuesday, ESPN.com Big 12 blogger David Ubben will stop by to chat some college football.
Ubben joined ESPN.com in March 2010 after covering Big 12 football for two seasons at the Columbia Missourian and The Oklahoman. Ubben, a native of Springdale, Ark., lives in Dallas.
Send your questions now and join Ubben Tuesday at 3 p.m. ET!
David Ubben (3:01 PM)
Hey, everybody. Welcome. Let's get started. What's on your mind today?
Joel (Niagara Falls/Buffalo) [via mobile]
Mr. Ubben, In my least confidant pick, I'm taking Oklahoma St. over Arizona in the Alamo Bowl. What do you think ? Thank you.
David Ubben (3:02 PM)
Well, I'd be a little more confident than that, but if Oklahoma State doesn't have Dana Holgorsen on its side for that game, you might be a little less confident.
Jim (Grand Junction, CO)
Here's your chance to blast a different conference. What's your opinion of the Big 10 division names?
David Ubben (3:03 PM)
Ha, you didn't hear it from me, but my friend Charles, a big Auburn fan, says the division names are turrrible.
Drew (Las Vegas)
With all the talk about Pelini and Miami, what school do you think current headcoaches of the Big 12 would actually leave their jobs for, ( ex. Turner Gill to Nebraska)
David Ubben (3:05 PM)
Interesting question. It's one that comes up more than you might think. Gill seems obvious. Washington would be one of the few schools outside of a possible major power who could get Pinkel from Missouri. Sherman might be up for another NFL gig, possibly, if he got a chance. Tuberville would probably leave for an SEC offer. Outside of them, you have a lot of pretty entrenched coaches or guys at their alma maters.
So what's your answser to the ESPN poll question? Mike Leach will get an FBS coaching job within how many years if ever?
David Ubben (3:06 PM)
Next season. Still pretty radioactive. Comes with being litigious.
What do all the suspensions at Iowa mean for Mizzou in the Insight Bowl?
David Ubben (3:07 PM)
It means a favorable matchup for the Tigers got even more so. That's really about it.
G. Steinbrenner (NY)
I gave Jeter some tickets to the Pinstripe Bowl. (Under the table...shh). Which colored foam finger should I put in his stocking?
David Ubben (3:07 PM)
Seems like Jeter could use some good faith from the New York fans right about now after the offseason negotiation. Might want to go with orange.
What are your thoughts on Teryl Austin. It appears Texas is hiring him to replace Muschamp from what I have been hearing today. Good fit?
David Ubben (3:09 PM)
Seems like that's the case. I really don't know much about him, but that'll change, I'm sure, if he gets the job.
Jack (Edmond, OK)
What about Mark Mangino's prospects as a HC or do you see him as OC for some other program.
David Ubben (3:10 PM)
I think he'll coach again somewhere, but he'll probably have to repair his image by position coach work or coordinating somewhere. Leach could probably jump into a head coaching job somewhere.
What's your feeling about Teryl Austin. He's a solid DC, but not the splash UT needs to keep recruits and get everyone excited for 2011. Why not go harder after Shannon or even a guy like Bud Foster? And with all of this DC talk, who do you think will emerge as the new UT OC -- Major seems like the move from my perspective.
David Ubben (3:13 PM)
Interesting question. Again, Austin is kind of a wait-and-see situation, but you're right, he's not exactly a hire that gets folks in Austin fired up. As for the offense, you could say the same thing about Major Applewhite. They both might work out fine, but Texas doesn't look like it'll be making big headlines with either hire.
Brad (Tulsa, OK)
With Dana Holgerson most likely going to West Virginia, what are the odds that Justin Blackmon sticks around next season?
David Ubben (3:14 PM)
Blackmon should stay, but Holgorsen leaving doesn't help that at all. Might be better to leave now while he knows his stock is high.
why dont bcs conferences have a challenge with other bcs conferences like basketball does? I would love to see that! Couldnt that tie in to bigger TV contracts?
David Ubben (3:15 PM)
In theory, but there's a big difference in only having three nonconference games and having 12-15. Not every school (I'm looking at you, K-State and Texas Tech) wants to play major conference competition. Not that playing big time games is across the board good for every school, but some are more committed to it than others. No way a conference-wide challenge would work.
Any Big 12 coaches in danger if the bowl game goes awry, or is everyone safe no matter what at this point?
David Ubben (3:17 PM)
Everybody's in a pretty good spot right now.
Matt K (Stillwater, OK)
Why cant we have nice things?
David Ubben (3:19 PM)
Ha. Hey, if the Cowboys lose Holgorsen, it's a big loss, but they've still got a lot of talent on both sides of the ball, and a great recruiting class coming in. You have to be excited about guys like Shaun Lewis, Joseph Randle, Justin Gilbert and high-powered offensive recruits like J.W. Walsh and Herschel Sims on their way.
Your opinion on coaches pulling offers? as Embree just did to two kids.
David Ubben (3:21 PM)
It's not ideal, but he's going to have to make some changes. Better for them to be pulled now than show up on campus and realize Embree has no place for them in the program, right? It looks somewhat bad right now, especially this late in the recruiting game, two months from signing day, but he's got to do what he's got to do to install his program. Those guys just didn't sound like they fit.
Bozo the Clown (Austin)
Are we seeing the sinking of the Titanic, ie Mack Browns unstoppable Longhorns? Is his Empire collapsing?
David Ubben (3:22 PM)
No, still pretty far from that. Talent will take you a long way in this game. Texas still has a lot, and there's plenty in the state. They need to make solid hires to keep the wins coming, but we're still a long way from seeing Texas fall back to the mediocre years of before Mack Brown.
Any word on if the Big 12 will be changing its name or getting a new logo?
David Ubben (3:24 PM)
They've had some people looking at it. It sounds like the league won't, but it's not set in stone. If they do, they better hire somebody different from whoever the Big Ten had.
John (College Station)
With Tannehill as the QB, does Jeff Fuller stick around another year?
David Ubben (3:26 PM)
My guess is no, but he hasn't really said much about it so far. He's a pretty smart guy, though, so he knows the value of sticking around another year. That'll factor in.
The Holiday Bowl (Boringville, USA)
If Niles Paul comes back for the Holiday Bowl, is that good news for Washington or the Nebraska?Consider the number of botched special team plays, pass drops, and fumbles he has had this year... Many of these occurred during big games and pivotal moments. Go ahead and bust out the "4th All Time Receiving in Nebraska Football History" argument...
David Ubben (3:27 PM)
Uh, no. It's a good thing. Did anyone else see Nebraska's passing game without Paul the last two games of the season? Not good. Paul helps.
Michael (Long Beach, CA)
Even if Broyles leaves, it looks as though OU will have a potent offense next year. Most of the O line is back and plenty of young running backs to pick up the slack. By the way, is Jermie Calhoun still in the picture?
David Ubben (3:28 PM)
Yeah, Oklahoma's offense should be fine. Looks like Calhoun is getting passed up for sure by Finch, but that No. 2 spot is probably going to be a rotation of guys, similar to this year when Finch was hurt early in the year.
Phil Dunphy (L.A.)
It seems like a lot more coaches are moving around this season than in previous years, any particular reason?
David Ubben (3:31 PM)
I don't think that's the case. Looks like business as usual to me on the offseason coaching carousel.
John (College Station)
Von came back for his senior year and that paid off. think that will help fuller make a decison?
David Ubben (3:32 PM)
Interesting point. I imagine it has some influence. I'm supposed to be talking to Von later today. I'll check in.
Ernie (Tahlequah, OK)
There has been discussion that Josh Heupel is too young to be the new OC at OU. He was a very smart QB for the OU championship team, but does he have what it takes to be an OC?
David Ubben (3:33 PM)
Well, far be it from me to comment on someone's age, but I'm guessing Bob Stoops knows a lot more about Josh Heupel's qualifications than any of us. Norvell's been around longer, and I'd say picking Heupel to call the plays is a pretty ringing endorsement.
David, want to be OSU's next offensive coordinator? We have some of the best orange koolaid in the country.
David Ubben (3:34 PM)
Let me mull over your offer. Should I bring a resume and my championship rings from the NCAA Football franchise?
David Ubben (3:35 PM)
Those exist, right?
David Ubben (3:35 PM)
Those exist, right?
Just curious how long does Pinkel stay at MU? life-time coach, gets fired, retired, or gets snagged by a better program?
David Ubben (3:36 PM)
I think he'll be there awhile. He's doing really well, and he's something like 30 wins or so away from being the winningest coach in school history. Missouri fans better hope Steve Sarkisian has success though.
Jack (Edmond, OK)
So the Big 12 survived the first round of conference alignment. What does the future look like when round 2 comes around?
David Ubben (3:37 PM)
Big 12 is making it pretty hard for anyone to leave. We'll see. As you saw this summer, that stuff is just impossible to predict. So much goes into it, a lot beyond sports.
Robert Griffin (Waco, TX)
How bad do you think me and my bears beat the fighting Illini?
David Ubben (3:39 PM)
I actually think that game will be pretty tight. Illinois is somewhat schizophrenic, but the Bears aren't very well-equipped to stop that offense. Baylor needs big games from Big Phil and RG3.
Does the fact that Fuller might be the 6th or 7th best wide reciever in the draft this year and possibly #1 next year have any impact on whether he stays or leaves A&M?
David Ubben (3:40 PM)
Oh, it definitely does. And Fuller can still get a lot better. But this class is stacked for sure, especially if Blackmon and Broyles leave.
CJ (Dallas, TX)
Huge buffs fan, but I'm from MO. Do you think Pinkel will ever get over the hump and compete with OU and Texas now that Nebraska is gone?
David Ubben (3:41 PM)
Well, he showed he could beat OU this year, and the Tigers would have beaten Texas pretty good, too, but he'll need to do it with consistency to have sustained success and more 10-win seasons.
Steve (Memphis, TN)
David, Thoughts on Damontre Moore's development this season? How well do you think he will fill Von Miller's shoes? Any chance at a second Butkus award winner in College Station?
David Ubben (3:42 PM)
I wouldn't rule it out. Moore looks like a future star. I'm excited to see what he can do with a full-time role next year.
David Ubben (3:43 PM)
I'll take a few more. Let's make 'em count.
Which Big 12 team makes the biggest leap this next season and which takes the biggest fall?
David Ubben (3:45 PM)
Iowa State should be a little better next year if Jerome Tiller plays well. Without Holgorsen, and depending on who stays/goes, it'll be tough for OSU to get back to double-digit wins in a brutal Big 12 next year.
Mack Brown (Austin)
With everyone leaving, what do you think we finish at next year?
David Ubben (3:47 PM)
My best guess is 8-9 wins. What used to be the South will have a ton of good teams next year, and Texas isn't in a position to just walk back in and win the league. They're losing a lot on defense, and don't have much to rely on offensively past Mike Davis and maybe Malcolm Brown.
Do you read the comments on the stories you write? Or are you too busy writing more stuff? Or does the vitriol and stupidity raise your blood pressure too much? It raises mine whenever I read it.
David Ubben (3:47 PM)
I'll skim the comments, but if it hits triple digits, I don't read it much. By now, nothing really bugs me in there.
Mike Gundy (Stillwater)
Who should I hire...besides the obvious, you, of course?
David Ubben (3:48 PM)
Bill Belichick might be interested in coming on as an OC, but I'm not sure his pedigree is as strong as mine.
Will Must-Chomp (Gainesville for Now)
How badly will me going to Florida effect recruting in Texas? And do I take any UT kids in 2012 with me?
David Ubben (3:49 PM)
Ha, what a great nickname. Won't hurt Texas much. Writing about that a little later today.
David Ubben (3:50 PM)
Thanks for the questions, everybody. See you again next week.
