Adam Schefter (2:19 PM)
Hello everybody. Starting a little early today as this McNabb news -- crazy or what? -- means I have to be ready for Sportscenter on ESPNNews at 3 sharp. So let's get this going and get to as many questions as we can. Thank you for your participation in advance.
Mike G. (DC)
Chances that Donovan McNabb is back in DC next year?
Adam Schefter (2:20 PM)
Next to none, Mike. Look, Washington already has benched him twice this season. You're telling me a team that has benched a QB twice is going to pick up a $10 million option bonus on the player? Don't see that at all. Nope, today's news was Mike Shanahan serving the divorce papers. Each will be married to someone else next season.
Mike shanahan has lost his lockeroom !
Adam Schefter (2:21 PM)
Could be, Nik. Today didn't help, that we know. McNabb has widespread respect in the locker room and across the league.
Joseph (Sacramento, CA)
With the now second benching of Mcnabb, who do you believe will be the starting QB for the Redskins in 2012? Thanks Adam.
Adam Schefter (2:23 PM)
Great question, Joseph. Not sure about 2012 or 2011. My guess for next year is that Rex Grossman AND John Beck each will get a chance to play during the final three games to see what they can do. If one can impress, he might have an advantage. One of those could be the starter in 2011 -- or it could be someone like Marc Bulger, whose contract is up after this season. As for 2012, a good guess might be the QB the Redskins are likely to draft in April.
Joe (Milford, MA)
Adam I listen to your call each Friday on D&C up here in the Boston area. It's always a pleasure to hear what you have to say. That being said I have a dumb fantasy question and I'm polling everyone under the sun over. I have to start 3 of 4: Foster, Rice, Stewart, and Charles. Thanks!!!
Adam Schefter (2:24 PM)
Hard to give fantasy tips, Joe. Have a hard enough time choosing my lineups and when I get my choices wrong, I feel terrible. Feel worse if I mislead someone. I always recommend for people to go to the ESPN.com website, click over to the fantasy section, and there's a bar that says "2010 Points Against". It gives you an idea of how teams have done against players at that particular position. You can factor that info in to your decision. But go with your gut. Can't guide you. Sorry. Too much responsibility.
Pete nice (South Holland Illinois)
I think Mike Shannahan and Son should be fired behind this latest episode of power control. I watched donovan play his whole career and rex grossman can't hold a candle to him. Should they be fired?
Adam Schefter (2:26 PM)
Well, I see where this chat is going today. Redskins. McNabb. Mike Shanahan. Kyle Shanahan. Bruce Allen. Dan Snyder. So I guess this story struck a chord. Don't think you're going to get your wish on this one right now, Pete. Dan Snyder wants to be patient and be a stable franchise, which is something the Redskins typically have not been over time. This is a risky move that Shanahan has made, but he is convinced it's the right one. Now we'll see how it works out over the season's final three weeks and beyond.
Jeffrey (Renton WA)
Why can't the Seattle Seahawks stay competitive in losses? The closest they have been in a loss is 15 points.
Adam Schefter (2:27 PM)
The team that Pete Carroll and John Schneider took over was not very good, Jeffrey. That team has some holes to it, as you've seen in those losses. But the Seahawks have been so helter skelter. Very impressive, then very unimpressive, no in between. It's the job of that staff to make that team more consistent.
MIKE (EDMOND, OK)
ARE THE VIKES GOING TO BE SMART ENOUGH AND DRAFT A FUTURE QB? SAME QUESTION, DIFFERENT YEAR!
Adam Schefter (2:29 PM)
You're not a Redskins fan, Mike? I think the Vikings have to draft a QB. Favre isn't coming back, Tarvaris Jackson's contract is up, and they need somebody other than Joe Webb. I could see Minnesota picking Cam Newton. Would make a lot of sense to me. He's likely to go in the area in which the Vikings will be picking. And they could do a lot worse than Newton.
Shane (Los Angeles, CA)
Mr. Shefter, do you think the writings on the wall for McNabb in Washington? In my opinion, you dont bench your starting QB unless all of the following 3 things are true: 1) You have an unproven quantity at QB that you want to test out 2) You dont think your current starter is part of your 2011 plans and 3) You are out of the playoffs. Thoughts?
Adam Schefter (2:30 PM)
Shane: You can read the writing on the wall. It's done. Curtain has come down. It would be a huge upset if McNabb were not moving on. That's what the writing on the wall says to me.
mike (temple hills, md)
how would you rate mike shanihans coaching and decisions this year
Adam Schefter (2:31 PM)
Some good moves, some bad moves, like every coach in the league, Mike. The issue is that some of his misses, like benching McNabb in the final two minutes against the Lions, were big moves and ignited national controversy. This one will, too. This is not to say this is the wrong move. But it's one that is going to be highly scrutinized.
Hi Adam, Does John Beck have any potential whatsoever behind center for the 'Skins in say, 2011? He was a castoff by the Dolphins before they made the trade for Chad Pennington and fits the system in my opinion. Your thoughts?
Adam Schefter (2:36 PM)
The Redskins think Beck could have something that's worth seeing, Scott. They don't know yet, but they have an interest in seeing. I sense that Beck will get some time here before the end of the season -- unless Rex Grossman comes in and lights it up. But Beck has impressed the Redskins in practice. They have to see whether he's capable of doing it in games. They don't know.
Do you see Gruden coming out of the booth to Head Coach somewhere like Dallas or Houston?
Adam Schefter (2:37 PM)
Think he's going to be tempted, Travis, but it sounds like unless it's the perfect job with the perfect fit, Gruden will wait until after next season before getting back on the sideline. The feeling I've gotten from people I've spoken with is that Gruden will do Monday Night Football one more season, then coach again in 2012.
Darren Brant (Bloomington, IL)
Hey Adam, Is it all but guaranteed that Austin Collie will be starting this Sunday for Indy playing against Jacksonville?
Adam Schefter (2:38 PM)
Never know with these things, Darren, but I know the Colts feel good that he'll play. Barring any setbacks, Collie should be out there. Which will be big for that offense.
Adam, Did you start VJax last night? I'm a smiling today!
Adam Schefter (2:38 PM)
Don't have VJax on my two fantasy teams, Hep. Do have Philip Rivers on one, though, and as TO once said, "That's my quarterback!"
Joe (Milford, MA)
Great job on D&C this morning!Pats peaking too early?
Adam Schefter (2:39 PM)
Don't know that there's such thing as peaking too early, Joe. All I'm saying is that, as good as the Patriots have been -- and no one in the league has been better -- they're not invincible. They can be beaten. It just won't be easy to do.
raul (rio grande city texas)
would u say there will be football in 2011? what about the cba?
Adam Schefter (2:40 PM)
There will be football in 2011, Raul. The question is when? And how much if any time will be missed? No one knows for sure right now. The one thing that does seem certain is that, if the two sides have a new CBA done by the Super Bowl, it would be just as big of an upset as McNabb returning next season to Washington.
Do you think that with his outstanding play over the past 4 weeks Tom Brady has the MVP already won?.
Adam Schefter (2:41 PM)
Just about, Ryan. Not quite yet as the season still has three weeks left. But if Brady stays healthy this game and the Patriots wrap up their division and homefield advantage, he'll be the NFL MVP. Again.
I think that Jason Garrett will be the Head Coach next year but I think we need a new DC if Singletary is fired do you think the Boys can get him?
Adam Schefter (2:42 PM)
Not sure what Mike Singletary will want to do next season, Travis, I'd imagine he'll have some options. Just don't think one of them will be coaching the 49ers. Change is coming there, and Singletary won't have a problem finding work elsewhere.
is Shanny overrated? if he didn't have elway, one of the best of all time, he would have never won a title. he's really made a mess out of the Skins, IMO.
Adam Schefter (2:43 PM)
The age-old debate, Kurt. Let me say this. Great coaches need great quarterbacks just as great quarterbacks need great coaches. Shanahan would not have won two Super Bowls without Elway, and Elway would not have won two Super Bowls without Shanahan. They made each other better. No need to pick one over the other. Someone tweeted me before, Who would you rather have, Belichick or Brady? You're talking about two of the greatest in NFL history at their respective jobs. Each is important to the other.
Adam, love the hard work you put in day after day - keep it up. In light of today's engagement news, I wanted to ask you your thoughts on if Tony Romo can ever lead an NFL team to the Super Bowl and why or why not.
Adam Schefter (2:45 PM)
I believe Tony Romo is a championship-caliber quarterback, FJ, and I recognize I'm probably in the minority on that. When healthy, he still is one of the 10 best quarterbacks in the league, and he is good enough to lead Dallas to a championship. But here we are questioning the quarterback when one question earlier we were questioning a coach. And if Tony Romo and Shanahan had worked together, it would be a formidable tandem and each would make the other better. Romo is good enough to win with -- not my opinion, the opinion of coaches and personnel people I've spoken with.
victor torres (new jersey)
who is the best QB at this moment
Adam Schefter (2:46 PM)
Tom Brady, Victor. Easily.
Ed (Natick, MA)
Here's a question from a NE fan that doesn't involve the Pats---Last night, SD won big, keeping the pressure on KC. How does Cassel look after his operation? What are chances he plays, and how effective can he be? Can KC hold off SD for the division title?
Adam Schefter (2:46 PM)
Chiefs list him as questionable, Ed. I'm guessing he's out there. He knows how important this game is and he's going to do everything he can to will himself out there for this game. Don't think he'll be 100 percent, think he'll be very limited in his movement, but think he'll be out there.
Texans fans want Kubiak gone were tired of the underachieving and now I'm hearing that Bob Mcnair might not fire Kubiak. Tell me you have some inside on this situation? Thank You
Adam Schefter (2:48 PM)
They're undecided, Travis. Don't forget that next year is a potential work stoppage. Plus, the Texans just handed out extensions to their coaches last off-season. I don't think Bob McNair wants to eat that money at a time like this. Not saying Kubiak is safe, but not sure his seat is red hot like some fans down there would like it to be. It could be that Kubiak is kept on and the Texans wind up bringing on a defensive coordinator that Bob McNair wants. I could see that, too. There will be changes, but they don't know how extensive they'll be just yet.
John (Canton, IL)
Does Indy have enough left to win out and get into the playoffs?
Adam Schefter (2:49 PM)
Been such a struggle this season, John. Not much has come easy. I despise picking against Peyton Manning, but there's something to this Super Bowl loss hangover deal. I say the Colts fall just short.
AFC West. Chiefs or Chargers this year?... and next year? Chiefs feel almost good, don't they?
Adam Schefter (2:49 PM)
Jon: Chiefs have to be feeling the pressure Sunday in St. Louis. If they don't come through in that spot, the door is open for San Diego to win it. And as long as Philip Rivers is playing quarterback in San Diego, I'll take the Chargers in just about any season.
What one move would the Bills have to make this offseason to start getting a better rep around the NFL?
Adam Schefter (2:50 PM)
They're doing some good things, Ryan, just have to keep building. But it looks like it's going in the right direction. Team has been gritty all season. Just need to start building for the future. I'd like to see a QB of the future to train under Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Marc (Malden, MA)
I think keeping McNabb would have just been compounding the mistake. I was for the trade, but it hasn't worked. Cut the cord and move on. If they kept McNabb it would be worse.
Adam Schefter (2:51 PM)
That's fine, Marc, but if McNabb hadn't been benched today, I still think the Redskins could have gotten something in return for him. Now they might be able to get something, just not much. And why wouldn't you want to get back something for a player you gave up a lot to get?
William (Portland, OR)
Has anyone talked about the fact that Vincent Jackson and Logan Mankins returning to the Chargers and Patriots respectively have changed how those teams play offensively?
Adam Schefter (2:53 PM)
The Chargers would not be where they are without Jackson, Williams. The Patriots were rolling without Mankins, but they've been even better with him. Two great players. Two great players that now have some additional leverage. All right, have to jump off to go get ready for Sportscenter. Thank you for your time and questions. If i didn't get to yours, my apologies. We'll try again during the next chat. Have a great weekend, please tune in to our pregame show at 11 am Sunday, and enjoy the games this weekend.--Adam
