Matt, it's my 21st birthday today, and all I want is to know if you think the skins should draft Jake Locker. I hear Shanahan likes him, but I'm not sold. Thanks!
Mosley (12:07 PM)
Happy 21st, Brendan! I think Shanahan will spend the next couple months studying every QB in the draft. I think he likes Mallett, too. Haven't talked to the Skins much about Locker. But I'll do that this week.
What are the Giants biggest needs this offseason and do you see them going after any big name free agents?
Mosley (12:08 PM)
I think Giants GM Jerry Reese will definitely look to improve his team both through FA and the draft. He's so upset right now with what the back end of that defense did. I think you'll see him continue to address that aspect of the team. And they better find someone to play the strongside because Bulluck was just a stop-gap guy.
MJ (Long Island)
Seriously, how did DeAngelo Hall make the pro bowl? does getting lit up every week and lead the league in receptions and TDs allowed get you a pro bowl??? another reason the pro bowl is a joke.
Mosley (12:09 PM)
We've known for a long time that this thing is a popularity contest. And the stats always help. Hall had six INTS and a couple fumble recoveries to end up with eight takeaways. All those INTs early in the season helped his cause. But yes, I saw how poorly he played that deep ball to Manningham on Sunday. And some other plays.
Josh (West Chester Pa)
what are the eagles chances sunday?
Mosley (12:10 PM)
I'm more optimistic about the Eagles than a lot of folks, Josh. I think a healthy Vick can make some plays against this Packers' D. But Mornhinweg and Reid have to do a better job helping Vick get rid of the ball quicker. And what I mean is more screen passes. McCoy needs to touch the ball a minimum of 20 times -- and that's not always the case.
With Orton now on the trade block, what are the odds the Skins go after him? A 2nd round pick is steep price in my opinion. My guess is they draft their QB of the future in the 1st round. The only problem with that is the fact that they believe in Rex Grossman for some reason. Hate to say it, but I see another disaster in DC next season. Ugh.
Mosley (12:11 PM)
I think they'd prefer Grossman over Orton. Seriously.
Justin Powers (Virginia Beach, VA)
Who is your pick for Coach of the Year up to this point?
Mosley (12:11 PM)
Harry (New York)
Matt - is there a league perception that Bill Belichick runs up the score against certain teams (why would Tom Brady play well into the 3rd quarter last Sunday)?
Mosley (12:12 PM)
I think Bill Belichick doesn't give a rip about how many points he's up. I think he's trying to work on efficiency. He saw Sunday as one more chance to fine-tune some things on offense. I don't think it really mattered who he was playing in that instance. I don't think he takes any personal satisfaction in getting opposing coaches fired.
Matt,Big fan of your blog. As a die-hard giants fan i'm very disappointed that my team didn't make the playoffs and the season ended the way it did, especially with the game against philly. I really think this team was good enough to be in the playoffs and even win a game, maybe 2. Do you agree and as a Giants fan should I be optimistic about next year?
Mosley (12:15 PM)
I agree that the Giants weren't far off from being a playoff team, but I still think they need to make some changes. You can't just dismiss this as a fluke and get excited about 2011. That Eagles loss was an epic failure. It showed that the Giants are capable of crumbling when things get a little tough. And then the next week was even more of an embarrassment. That's why I'd be taking a long look at this personnel if I'm Jerry Reese. How does that Packers performance happen? I'd keep asking that question over and over until there's a decent answer.
Justin Powers (Virginia Beach, VA)
Does Joe Webb have a shot at being the Vikings QB next year?
Mosley (12:15 PM)
I think everyone has a shot at being the Vikings' QB. For all we know, Tarvaris Jackson could get back in the mix. I'd think about trading for Kolb. And yes, I know he didn't look like a world-beater the other day.
Nathan (Coralville, IA)
How much change to Dallas' roster can we expect?
Mosley (12:17 PM)
Quite a bit. Both of those safeties could be out. Marc Colombo and Leonard Davis could get replace on the O-line. You could even have a new left guard. Barber and Williams will be gone. So we're talking about some significant moves, Nathan.
Steve (Washington DC)
Why is ok for the Vikings to promote their interim Head Coach without interviewing anyone, but the Cowboys have to do a sham interview to promote their interim Head Coach? It doesna??t seem fair to Jason Garrett, the Dallas Cowboys or the minority candidate they interview. Garrett has earned the job!
Mosley (12:19 PM)
It's a league rule. The Rooney Rule was put in place to encourage the hiring of minorities to head-coaching positions. I agree that it doesn't always work properly, but I think it was enacted with the proper intent. It's not hard to figure out the whole Vikings situation. Leslie Frazier's black. Why should the Rooney Rule apply to the Vikings in this instance if they're already doing exactly what the Rooney Rule was hoping to accomplish?
TCU Andy Dalton do you see him in the 2nd or 3rd round as a developmental QB?
Mosley (12:20 PM)
I think Dalton helped himself in a big way Saturday. Loved watching him pick apart that Wisconsin defense. I think third round sounds about right, but we'll see how he does in the all-star games and the combine. The Beast blog will be there to bring you all the action.
Matt, what do you think are the chances that the Skins can trade Haynesworth & McNabb this offseason? It seems pretty clear that they aren't going to bring them back.
Mosley (12:21 PM)
Hard to imagine them getting that much for either player. It's more likely that Haynesworth is simply dumped at some point. With McNabb, there might be a team willing to trade a fourth-round pick for him. He didn't put much on tape this season.
The Redskins seemed to have made a lot of their contracts expendable after this year. Do you think they cut a lot of their veterans (Portis, Carter, Rabach, Dockery, Ma'kee, etc) and become big players in the FA market? The coaches keep referencing the upcoming FA market. Will there be more March splashes which gets Redskin Nation all excited?
Mosley (12:24 PM)
Dan, I think we've seen the last of several veteran players. You can throw Carlos Rogers in the mix. Portis is a goner. They love Andre Carter's leadership, but it's hard to keep veteran non-starters around. So it looks you have the making of a pretty good list.
What's up with Shanahan in Washington is his job safe or could we see a coaching change their?
Mosley (12:25 PM)
No, I think he's fine for next season. Snyder's not going to be that hasty. There were some major bumps, but he's still committed to Shanny & Son.
Jc (Fort Myers Fl)
With all the Giants problems holding on to the football it was obvious they are still a very talented football team. My question is did you notice like I did that they do not have very good team speed. Watching guys like Desean Jackson and Brandon Banks flying by guys in our secondary and special teams then seeing our punt returners going 5 yards and a cloud of dust was a bit annoying. Who's the fast WR/RB/KR available in this years draft?
Mosley (12:27 PM)
DeSean Jackson can make a lot of teams look slow. But I do think the Giants looked slow on the back end of that D at times. The Giants have to watch every game on film and try to determine what was going on back there. Terell Thomas will be starting at CB again next season. It wouldn't shock me to see the Giants draft someone to compete with Webster, though.
Chioke Hassan (Baltimore,Md)
Dear MattCould you see Jerry Jones making the Hall of Fame?
Mosley (12:29 PM)
Perhaps someday, but now's not the time for that discussion. He's been great for the league, but he's still 15-20 years from truly being considered for the Hall. Another Super Bowl would help his cause.
Who is the better option at MLB: Chaney or Bradley?
Mosley (12:30 PM)
Still Bradley when healthy. Chaney's a nice player, but he's still going to make some mistakes. You'd rather have the veteran in the mix. If the Eagles beat the Packers, there's a chance Bradley could return.
Have the Giants given up on William Beatty as their left tackle of the future?
Mosley (12:31 PM)
I don't think they've given up on Beatty at all. He was out there some this season. And it's not like Shawn Andrews is the long-term answer. He'll always have these back issues. So I think Beatty's still in the mix.
Steve (Big D)
Rumor has it that Jerry is also going to talk to Winston Moss the Asst. HC/LB coach from GB for the HC position. Could he be a possiablity for DC in Dallas? He is a Dom Caper asst. and Jason does think very highly of Dom.
Mosley (12:32 PM)
I think it's true that Garrett likes Capers. So any Green Bay-related coach probably makes sense as a candidate.
Matt, lets just assume for a minute that the CBA gets worked out and there is football in 2011. Does this division take a step forward or will the Cowboys and Redskins remain bottom feeders with the Giants leading the way as choke artists?
Mosley (12:33 PM)
I have to think the entire division takes a step forward. Cowboys will be better under Garrett and you have to think Shanny will make some progress if he can find a QB. And that's a big IF.
Can McNabb save his career in 2011? I personally think he has a lot left in the tank but his reputation has taken a savage hit this year. Where do you think he ends up in 2011? Will the Skins hold on to him throughout the preseason juss to try and do a deal?
Mosley (12:34 PM)
I think the Skins will let him go before then, Trish. I could see McNabb getting an opportunity with the Cardinals. He simply couldn't find common ground with Kyle Shanahan. I'm not sure who deserves the most blame on that one.
Young (Oxford, MS)
Who is faster, Mike Wallace or Desean Jackson? And If eagles win against Packers, is there a greater chance they will go to Superbowl?
Mosley (12:35 PM)
Give me Safer in his prime.
Peter L (Maine)
WHat do you think the chances are that the skins draft cam newton?
Mosley (12:36 PM)
I think Shanny will take a long look at Newton. We'll have to see what the Rev. Cecil has to say.
Mr. Scary (Work)
Here's an easy one; who are your picks for the games this weekend? And now that the Giants are out of it, would you like to update your SB prediction?
Mosley (12:37 PM)
My AFC team, the Ravens, could still get it done. On the NFC side, I'm a believer in the Falcons at the Georgia Dome.
Gregg (Krakow, Poland)
Hey Matt, Love the blog. Any chance the Eagles secondary gets it together enough to make a respectable showing against the Pack?
Mosley (12:39 PM)
That's a tall order, Gregg. It will come down to whether this defense can get to Aaron Rodgers. If he gets in a rhythm, Joselio Hanson, Samuel, Patterson and Co. could be in big trouble. The Packers are one of the few teams in the league who have as many offensive weapons as the Eagles. Best matchup of the first round in my humble, humble opinion.
Love your insight on the web and the radio, Matt. (Please give Mr. Randy a little kiss for me! ; )Will Jason Garrett have autonomy to make decisions that, normally, head coaches make (e.g., his coaching staff, players' playing time, etc.)?
Mosley (12:41 PM)
I refuse to honor that first request, Meredith. And yes, I think Garrett will have almost full control in who's on the field. Regarding coaching hires, Garrett will have a ton of input. But Jerry makes the final call. But when it comes to acquiring players via draft or FA, Jerry's still out in front. Jason will have to fall in line.
Shane (Los Angeles, CA)
Who is better value, McNabb + his contract or a 1st rounder for Kolb?
Mosley (12:41 PM)
Kolb. He'll make $1.5 million next season. Bargain basement deal for a pretty talented guy.
Matt how does the professor still rank eli in the elite quarterback list? His play this season is what cost the giants a playoff spot not the spotty defense. that defense had short fields all year because of his poor decisions and rb fumbles.
Mosley (12:42 PM)
I never comment on The Professor. It's hazardous to my future.
Maly Mal (Passaic, New Jerz) [via mobile]
Happy New Year Matt Man. Do you think the Eagles D will get enough stops for us to get the w? Our d has looked terrible the past few games; no pass rush, Dimitri Patterson getting COOKED!! Also too many penalties. Does all this get ironed out, we can't afford to do that against one of the Elite QBs in the league.
Mosley (12:44 PM)
I don't think it all gets ironed out. You need Vick to turn into Superman again this Sunday to win this game. How healthy will he be? It all hinges on that.
eli, 4000 yards, 31 tds, why getting so much heat? I know he had 25 ints, but if you take out the perfect passes that hit receivers in the hands and were dropped into defensive players hands that number drops to around 15. 4000/31/15 isnt and bad year
Mosley (12:49 PM)
Even with the tipped balls, that's still a really, really high number for any QB. Manning tries to do too much with the ball. And it puts the Giants in tough situations. I wouldn't use that whole tipped ball excuse too much. Manning was prolific in both TDs and INTs this season. But the Giants can't dismiss that high INT total. Eli was way too careless with the football and that's probably one of the differences in the Giants coming up one win short of the playoffs.
wolverine (Northern VA)
matt, in regards to the eagles- MM showed some real progress in the middle of the season by varying the play calling, running more and having solid game plans. that seems to be distant memory- any particular reason why that you see, and can he get back on track in the playoffs?
Mosley (12:51 PM)
I think he BETTER get back to it. If McCoy's not a huge part of the game plan Sunday, then Marty will have erred in a big way. You don't have to try to score on every play. Too many times Andy and Marty call plays as if everything's riding on that one moment. Chip away at a defense from time to time. Try to wear the Packers down instead of getting in a track meet with Aaron Rodgers. Because he won't shy away from one of those competitions.
Any chance the Skins trade up to snag Andy Luck?
Mosley (12:52 PM)
I'm not convinced the guy's coming out yet. But if he does, I don't think the Skins will be able to move up that far to get him. They don't have the ammunition.
Philadelphia Eagles fan (Philadelphia )
Eagles greatest need in the 2011 draft is:............
Mosley (12:52 PM)
CB, CB, CB
Skins switching to 3-4 the worst coaching move of the year? They went from an above ave. D to bottom feeder and caused Haynesworth drama that has mad him untradeable and unkeepable.
Mosley (12:53 PM)
I think they should've stayed in the 3-4 for one more season. But Haslett wanted to go ahead and make the change. It was not good. The takeaways in the first half of the season were good. That's about it.
Do you think there's any shot the Skins make the playoffs next year?
Mosley (12:55 PM)
Give me a few months to see what Shanny does. But right now, it doesn't look good. I don't see a lot of teams in the playoffs who don't have a good QB. Cutler's about as close it comes. But I think he's been pretty good this season. (and I'm not a huge M. Sanchez guy either).
Any idea on whether or not the Giants will keep the RB dynamic the same next season?
Mosley (12:56 PM)
I think they liked how Jacobs and Bradshaw worked together. But it wouldn't hurt to find a third-down back with some speed. They'd hoped Andre Brown was that guy, but it didn't work out. Giants will be on the lookout for that player in the draft. Remember that Bradshaw was a seventh-round pick.
Justin Powers (Virginia Beach, VA )
Would the Redskins ever consider Kolb??
Mosley (12:56 PM)
They'd be foolish not to.
Why is Jerry not interviewing some of the big name coaches? I know he is sold on Garrett, but it seems a little foolish to not at least speak with them and go through the process of ensuring Garrett is the right guy for the job.
Mosley (12:58 PM)
I wouldn't be opposed to Jerry talking to a few more coaches, John. But apparently he's scared to death that another team will roll in and swoop up Garrett. I don't think that would happen, but Jerry wants to make sure. So there's your reason. You guys have been great. I was only going 30 minutes today, but the great questions caused me to go the distance. Look forward to our offseason chats. Let's talk soon.MM
Jason (Bryn Mawr, PA)
Matt, why is it that when anyone asks about the Eagles chances this weekend all responses talk about the offense, but how in the world is the defense going to stop Aaron Rodgers?!
Mosley (12:59 PM)
Jason, I've been saying that over and over. That will be a huge factor. That's why I think Vick has to find his cape Sunday. Someone's hidden it from him.
pete (rye brook, ny)
do the cowboys keep pasqualioni even if they choose another DC?
Mosley (1:00 PM)
They may give Pasqual that opportunity, but I doubt he'd stay.
pete (rye brook, ny)
Any chance the giants replace gilbride and try to go with a more innovative coordinator?
Mosley (1:00 PM)
Not sure about that, Pete. But I do know that Coughlin loves Sparano. Keep that in mind.
