I do not believe it is a legitimate possibility because I do not believe HBO will approve that fight. He is an unknown fighter in America and, frankly, not a legitimate top 10 opponent.

The deals aren't done yet but the Dzinziruk side is supposed to be getting $850,000, so he will get the bulk of that once he finishes his deal with his promoters. Martinez will get low seven-figures.

Nothing close to being done. There's been some talk about a Cintron fight, but that ain't happening as far as I know. HBO doesn't want that fight. I think a possibility could be Victor Ortiz, who is struggling to make 140. That's a good fight and one HBO would probably accept.

I have no way of verifying that but it wouldn't surprise me if the sales were in the dumper because, while it is obviously a great fight, it means nothing whatsoever in the outskirts of Detroit. And even hardcore fans who might consider traveling to the fight-- do they want to go to Michigan in late January? It's going to be cold and there's not much to do out in Pontiac anyway. I'm going to cover it but I would have much preferred it be somewhere else.

ESPN and Main Events discussed and, from what I am told, ESPN offered a premium over the usual FNF fees but not enough to satsify Main Events. So Main Events will put it on PPV, but ESPN did try.

Dan, I have been waiting for your Tyson blog ever since you mentioned it in your tweet, initially, you wrote part of it in one of your earlier blogs and I thought that was all you would write and suddenly the whole conversation just popped up from nowhere yesterday, just wanna tell you I enjoyed reading it a lot. Newbie's question for this week is, being a Newbie that I am, I often read that RJJ could have fought better guys in the 90s but he did fight Toney, Virgin Hill and Griffin, just to name a few and I was just wondering who were the other better guys that RJJ could have fought at supper middle weight and light heavy weight in his hey days.

HBO wants to do Martinez fights and I don't blame them. He's coming off the KO of the year and being fighter of the year. I think they would also love to do keep doing Cotto fights but they had to make a decision as they weren't doing both in the same night. I wish it could have worked where they weren't on the same night. I also don't think HBO was interested in a re-tread like Mayorga, who has done squat for years.

Exactly. Gilberto's Twitter responses are ridiculous. He has zero credibility. I swear on my life, my house, all my boxing posters that a few years ago when I was in Puerto Rico covering a Cotto fight I met with Gilberto Jr. and we had a drink together. And we spent a couple of hours discussing boxing and different stuff about the politics and sanctioning bodies. And that was right around the time the WBA had started its "super champion" crap. He told me to my face he didn't support it and was going to try to get his father to get rid of it.

Top Rank had a deal with the Hard Rock in Hollywood, Fla., but the folks there that put on the Heavyweight Factory shows (the boss is one of the high level guys in the tribe) put the kibbosh on it because Top Rank wouldn't (COULDN'T) guarantee that Brad Solomon, one of the guy's fighters, would be in the HBO opener. So good bye site. Short-sited move, because even if the kid wasn't on the co-feature maybe Top Rank could have gotten HBO to show clips. On top of that does it hurt to have the kid seen by the media covering the show and the HBO execs who will be there? Just dumb. It's too bad because the Hard Rock arena is one of the best venues for boxing in America as far as I am concerned.

We've discussed this in the chats many times. There are some great ones. Morales-Barrera trilogy, Lewis-Klitschko, Hopkins-Trinidad, Pacquiao-Oscar, Lewis-Rahman 1 and 2. There are so many. They don't have to be great fights mind you, but also great stories.

Dan, I have long admired and followed your Boxing reporting. I'm curious to know why Kelly Pavlik's alcohol issues were not reported on until after he was in rehab? Simple: Nobody would say it for the record or even agree to be an anonymous source. I tried. Believe me. His drinking was not a secret. But when you give your word to people in the camp that it won't be written if they speak to you off the record you're supposed to keep your word. Dantastic Four, do you think Wladimir Klitschko is systematically eliminating all of Haye's options at heavyweight? Wlad is taking on Chisora, whom Haye would have fought because "it's a big UK fight", then taking on Adamek, which would have been another huge payday. So, in essence, do you think Wlad may be cornering Haye into a fight?

You could look at it that way maybe but I think the most important thing is that Wlad is doing his thing. If Ducker comes back to the table great. But Wlad will go and do his thing. Ducker needs Wlad more than Wlad needs Ducker but Ducker doesn't quite get that yet.

Peterson deserves to make a reasonable payday. He took short money for Ortiz. There is way more money in the pot for a Khan fight. From what I heard he was offered, which was a joke, he was right to turn it down.

When I tell my friends how Haye is ducking Klitschko there all blinded saying its Wladimir's fault. Basically, HBO has promised both fighters return fights on HBO win or lose for a certain price. If HBO decides it would like the rematch it can get that at a certain price. The fighters of course have a choice -- they don't have to take a rematch but then they wouldn't be on HBO I guess.

Hi Dan - The blog on Tyson's HOF election was great. One piece stood out for me - the part where Tyson mentioned the old photograph that literally brought him to tears. Not rumors. It's fact. They are putting everything on paper. There is a new stadium being built in Poland for the Euro soccer tournament and the fight would take place there. They will have a massive, massive crowd for the fight, which would be in September.

I did an internship at the local paper where I went to college, took some classes in journalism and worked my rear end off. I started at the bottom. Nobody is going to just walk into being a writer for ESPN or some other major publication. Have a goal and work hard. And hope for a little luck too.

Thanks. I knew the general topic we'd discuss so I was prepared on those topics, but we didn't do a lot. There was a brief rehersal for the guys over in the UK that I listened to to get a feel for the show and then I answered half of one question basically so they make sure our audio was OK and that was it. I know this material cold so there isn't a lot of prep that needs to be done for that sort of interview.

Reasonable question but they are not necessarily related since Dzinziruk is utterly unknown to an American audience. He's good. I know that because I have seen numerous of his fights. Maybe you know that too. But probably 95% of the audience doesn't know him from Adam. He does not bring much to the fight or the promotion financially. He is basically getting a subsidy from HBO when he has never generated a dime on his own or made even a fraction of that kind of money.

LOL. No but that was the first time I met the Klitschko brothers. I was interviewing them for a piece in USA Today. I was in Vegas that week to cover the Hamed-Barrera fight. It was at the MGM and the movie folks used their ring set up to film the movie scenes.

Yup. I picked Rahman for that reason. I was at the press conference the morning of the Barrera-Hamed fight at the MGM. Lennox was there unfocused and out of shape. Rahman was there via big screen satellite hook up. He had been in South Africa already for like three weeks and looked in awesome shape. Probably my best pick ever.
