Chat with Andrew Feldman
Welcome to SportsNation! On Wednesday, ESPN.com poker columnist Andrew Feldman stops by from the sunny Bahamas as he'll be covering the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure.
Send your questions now and join Feldman Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET!
Andrew Feldman (2:58 PM)
Hey everyone! The PCA main event is down to 32 players and I'll be here for the next half hour to take all your poker questions. Send 'em in and we'll get started in a second.
what do you expect to see in poker legislation now that December is past us for this upcoming year?
Andrew Feldman (3:05 PM)
I think on a federal level, despite the efforts of Harry Reid, we're not going to see much movement as there is not a lot of support with the new politicians that have taken office. It might be very tough on that front, but I expect numerous states to follow NJ and legalize the online game in their own way.
With the final table being broadcast live, what kind of poker-world excitement do you see if Moneymaker is still alive? Do you get the sense the pro community is rooting for a Moneymaker very deep run, or that they'd prefer a top internet guy to win? And do the media see it differently?
Andrew Feldman (3:09 PM)
I think it will be absolutely amazing if he were to make the final table given the circumstances. It'll be a tough path to get there, but to see Moneymaker make it through and hopefully, earn some additional respect from some, will be great. I think everyone here is hoping for Chris to make that final table and given that it is going to be live, it is a huge opportunity for the game.
Andrew Feldman (3:10 PM)
By the way, I just found out that even the bloggers/etc cannot post for the hour delay, so when it hits TV, it really will be live. There are no computers/phones allowed in the production center which will ensure no live updates.
cash games heating up @pca?
Andrew Feldman (3:11 PM)
Yes. I heard of a bunch of bigger games starting later on tonight that apparently you have to be invited to. The regular cash games and sit and go areas have been crowded as well.
Dave (Fort Worth)
What is your estimate on how long the FT coverage on ESPN2 will last? Need to know how much time to clear on my DVR!!!
Andrew Feldman (3:11 PM)
We are going to show the event on ESPN2 for as long as it takes. I'd wait and see until what level we end at on Thursday before estimating a time when it is going to end.
LaSchell (Miami, FL)
I've been reading that it's easier for women to get sponsorship deals than men. What kind of results would a woman have to post to score a deal? WSOP Circuit Championship? Circuit Regional Championship Final Table? WPT Final Table? Or is it more about consistency?
Andrew Feldman (3:14 PM)
It is easier because many industry insiders still believe that women are the untapped demographic that can still provide an influx of players. At this point, if a woman wins a major (all that you named), I think they are a lock for sponsorship from one site or another. Obviously consistency is important for the length of the contract, but any major win should be enough to sign a deal.
E.J. Friedman (Memphis, TN)
Do you think Prahlad Friedman's (no relation heh) signing to UB helps the company's tarnished image or do you think it damages the reputation of one of the people (Prahlad) from whom so much was stolen?
Andrew Feldman (3:15 PM)
I honestly don't know what to think of it. I was shocked to see his signing with them, but if he feels he was treated rightly after the scandal and they they earned back his trust, that's his call. I said this the other day, but it's like Teddy KGB telling Mike McD in Rounders that they're paying him with his money. Obviously that's a stretch, but it has that same feeling. Best of luck to both companies in any case.
Andrew Feldman (3:16 PM)
As far as UB's image. They're doing their best here to make good, but losing Phil and Annie hurts. You have a roster of players who relate to the onliners, but not to the mainstream and unless they feel they can really make strides in taking players away from Stars/Tilt, I'm not sure the direction its heading.
How's the feedback been on the switch of ESPN poker to Pokerstars.net? Some of the ESPN tournaments (like the double snack) are a bit quick in the blind structure. It's nice to play tournaments non NL Hold'em games, but the quality of play is subpar (or maybe I'm a Razz expert and didn't know it before).
Andrew Feldman (3:17 PM)
So far, so good! The online play there is a little different because most people are trying out the new games without a lot of experience. It's the same thing that you'll see at any free-play site where many are just trying to grasp how to tackle each of the games other than NL hold 'em.
Bobby (Memphis, TN)
I just read @ftrainpoker 's blog about Pokerstars trying to encourage more women to play poker by giving video cameras to female members of team Pokerstars. Do you envision Pokerstars signing more women in the future?
Andrew Feldman (3:18 PM)
I think they are trying. Not sure I agree with what they put out this morning, but that's their marketing decision.
Eric (San Diego)
Has the PCA become the 2nd biggest series behind the WSOP? Each win seems pretty prestigious, but the lack of Full Tilt players has to hurt the overall appeal.
Andrew Feldman (3:19 PM)
Absolutely has. The onliners love this place and why wouldn't you? It's a reunion for those who know each other only by screen name each year. As far as Full Tilt, Ivey was here playing.
who you think hellmuth signs with and when?
Andrew Feldman (3:20 PM)
I was shocked to hear him talk about this on last week's Poker Edge. I really didn't expect him to be willing to go to a Stars/Tilt, but that has to be where he's heading. I say he ends up with FTP at this point unless the WSOP steps in and is willing to take him on as the face of their brand for their online site. I just really can't see Daniel and Phil sharing the spotlight at Stars.
How do you feel the pissing match between PS and FT as far as their sponsored television shows (HSP and PAD) and them banning their respective players from the other sites shows' will affect poker on television
Andrew Feldman (3:22 PM)
I think everyone agrees it's slightly ridiculous. The sites are major competitors and that's well known and in any market, one competitor isn't going to help the other. That said, in this case, if they worked together to put out the best poker on TV with the best players, it might help the industry big time and in the long run. Fans want to see Negreanu vs. Ivey or Dwan vs. Mercier...but they won't get a chance to this year.
Matt R (NJ)
Over/Under (7.5 months) before first legal online poker site in NJ?Maybe a Borgata.com or a Ceasars.com site.
Andrew Feldman (3:22 PM)
Under. There is too much money out there to be grabbed if you are the first site operating.
Ignacio (Costa Rica)
Now that Daniel Negreany has pass Phil Ivey's earnings in live tournament, can we say that he's one of the best player in the whole history, and when I say one of the best I mean top 10
Andrew Feldman (3:24 PM)
That is incredibly hard to argue. He has the tournament success to boast a resume that many would dream of. In addition to that, he has the cash game experience in the biggest games in the world. At the end of DN's career, we'll look at him as one of the top 10 ever.
Mainiac (Down East)
Simple question - what's the easiest way for a US player to deposit $ into an online acct?
Andrew Feldman (3:24 PM)
Honestly, I'm unsure and it really depends on the sites. It's not easy these days to do so...
Chad L (Chicago)
Update on Tim Finne at the PCA?
Andrew Feldman (3:26 PM)
One of the shortest stacks in the field right now. Lots of chips to work with despite being a short stack.
Brett (South Jersey)
If im trying to take the next step in poker and play larger buy-in tourneys, what rank would you give the following: experience, math, reading my opponents, aggression?
Andrew Feldman (3:28 PM)
Are you playing live or online? Aggression has become key in all the big buy-in tournaments and until you're ready to deal with it from all fronts, you're not ready to go big time. I still think experience it the #1, then aggression, math and then reading. Obviously the four are incredibly close, but if you can feel comfortable in the situation, be ready to put your chips in at any point and understand the odds, you'll be able to read your opponents in the key situations.
Any freerolls coming to ESPN poker soon?
Andrew Feldman (3:29 PM)
Right now we're giving away a seat on the NAPT. Qualify for the final tournament every Sunday by coming in the top 25 in any Sunday Qualifier. Then win the finals and you've earned a $5K seat for free.
Gavin Smith, Gus Hansen or Phil Laak. Which first timer did the WSOP bracelet help the most last year?
Andrew Feldman (3:32 PM)
Great question. I'm going to go Gus Hansen. Regarded as one of the best in the game, Hansen needed that bracelet victory to quiet the talk that he couldn't win at the WSOP. Laak has his success on all fronts already so I don't think it was as huge for him as the other two. As for Gavin, he just had his first child and all the success he had in 2010 simply was in preparation for what's ahead of him.
With Ivey not #1 on the tourny earnings list.. does he play more tourneys now? or does it not matter to him? in your opinion
Andrew Feldman (3:33 PM)
It absolutely matters to Ivey. He'll be doing everything he can to get that lead back. A couple years ago Ivey turned a new leaf and decided it was all about leaving a legacy. Being #1 in all-time earnings would ensure that he would not be forgotten.
Andrew Feldman (3:33 PM)
Ok everyone, back to the tournament floor! I'll be back tomorrow at 3 for more questions! thanks for stopping by and have a great Wednesday!
