Adam Schefter (2:26 PM)
Welcome to Championship Friday, everyone. Let's try to get to as many questions as possible in the next 30 minutes. Appreciate you sending in questions and reading along. Let's get it started.
Adam, Heard reports this morning that the Browns were going to hire Dick Jauron. But on the Dan Patrick Show, Shurmur kept being hush hush about it. Do you have any news or information on the matter and if not do you know what offensive cordinator's they are looking at?
Adam Schefter (2:27 PM)
Zach: The deal with Dick Jauron will get done. He will be the Browns defensive coordinator. But here's what's going on. The Browns were hoping to announce their entire staff together, in one big deal. They don't want to announce hire by hire. They want to trot out everyone all at once. But know this: Jauron will be the defensive coordinator, special teams coach Brad Seeley is likely to wind up in San Francisco, and I'm not sure where the Browns will turn on special teams for a replacement.
What would you advise Mike Shanahan and Bruce Allen to do in order to fix the Redskins for next year?
Adam Schefter (2:28 PM)
Fix the quarterback position, Joe. They thought they were on their way to doing it last off-season, when they acquired Donovan McNabb. Unfortunately it didn't work out for anybody. Until the Redskins can find a quarterback, they will struggle to compete for a championship.
Mel (philly) [via mobile]
Do see the eagles goin with kevin kolb and not signing Vick back and what position do u think we are most weak on in the defense ?
Adam Schefter (2:30 PM)
If you wanted a real out-of-the-box idea, Mel -- and let me say I don't think it will happen, it's just an idea -- but how about doing what you're saying and keeping Kolb, franchising Vick and then trading him? Some people think the Eagles could wind up trading Kolb, but what about keeping Kolb and dealing Vick? Just a thought, an outlandish one. But Philadelphia is going to explore all its quarterback options and do what is in the best interests of the Eagles. As for defense, they still need an effective pass rusher and another CB wouldn't hurt, either.
Cam Newton (Auburn)
Am I more likely to turn into Randall Cunningham or Vince Young?
Adam Schefter (2:30 PM)
Don't know if it's either, Cam. Had one scout tell me you were a cross between Josh Freeman and Ben Roethlisberger. If you can be that, major props.
Do you think Bill Cowher would take the Giants head coaching job if offered to him mid season next year ?
Adam Schefter (2:32 PM)
Hard to predict where and when for Coach Cowher, Tabitha, especially at the expense of someone as widely respected as Tom Coughlin. What I feel comfortable in saying is that I believe Cowher will be coaching somewhere in 2012. If the Giants struggle next season and the job opens up, then that would be a possibility. But that is so many steps ahead of where things are right now, and so much changes, that it's too hard to predict. But you can look for Cowher back in 2012, that is a safe assumption.
Tabitha (Newark, NJ)
Dyou see the Giants making any big name free agent signings this offseason maybe poluzsny of Buffalo ?
Adam Schefter (2:33 PM)
Tabitha: Before we talk of any free-agent moves or trades, there has to be a new collective bargaining agreement. Don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, but i can tell you that the way NFL business is normally conducted is markedly different than it has been in other seasons. There are not many behind-the-scenes conversations about trades or signings. There are more questions about when there will be a new CBA and when there will be football again.
Adam, do you see Fox as a good fix in Denver? Do you think any player from the Panthers will follow him?
Adam Schefter (2:34 PM)
Think John Fox was as good as Denver could do at this point, Jeff. Denver needed an experienced coach to match with the inexperienced John Elway. It got one. It needed a defensive presence to help repair what has been a dreadful unit. It got one. It got an experienced, defensive mind, which is all it could ask for at this time. And let me ask you this: Who from the Panthers team that finished with the worst record in football this season do you want in Denver? The guy to get wound up in Chicago last off-season.
Borris (Westport, WA)
Chances of the Seahawks picking up Nnamdi Asomugha? It would make sense for the Seahawks, CB is arguably their biggest hole. Trufant is a capable #2, but can't stand up to the top WRs in the league. And maybe Nnamdi would want to follow Tom Cable.
Adam Schefter (2:36 PM)
Borris: I could see Seattle being one of the teams in play on Nnamdi, absolutely. It needs cornerbacks and it has plenty of money. But again, there is not a lot of chatter and speculation amongst teams about where certain players will end up. There is more chatter about what the heck is going on with the CBA.
Jeff (Baltimore Maryland)
Adam, I try to never miss your ESPN spots or your Chats. you are the "Man in the Know" when it comes to the NFL. You know Mike Shanahan better than any journalist out there. What do you envision as his off-season plan to revitalize my beloved Skins, assuming there is a new CBA. We need so many things, a QB, OL, DL, LB, CB, Punter, Kicker . . . any chance he makes us alot better this offseason? Thank you.
Adam Schefter (2:37 PM)
Thank you for the over-the-top praise, Jeff. Shanahan has been digging in on tape and the one thing I can say is, once there is a new CBA, there will be plenty of change in Washington. If they get the CBA done this off-season, that change will be for next season. If the CBA gets done late, it will be next season. But there aren't a ton of players you look at on the Redskins roster as building blocks. There are some, but not a lot. And I think the Redskins know this and will act on it -- in all areas.
Lucas (Reno, NV)
With the NFC West being so weak, I believe the 49ers are a veteran QB away winning the division. Assuming a CBA deal is made what would it take for them to acquire Kolb or Orton? If not them would McNabb relocate to the west coast?
Adam Schefter (2:39 PM)
Lucas: Kolb will be coveted by any team that needs a quarterback, and the Eagles always demand a lot in return. A lot. It will not be cheap by any stretch of the imagination to land Kolb or Vick. Orton and McNabb would be more afforable alternatives. I'm going to guess if there is a new CBA, Orton winds up going for a 2nd or 3rd-round pick, and McNabb goes for a conditional fifth-round pick that could go up to a 4th or 3rd based on playing time. That's just my sense, though. And the 49ers know they have to do something there.
Julian (Streator IL)
Any news on Craig Johnson to the Vikings and if he does decide to join their staff will Vince Young follow him?
Adam Schefter (2:40 PM)
He joined, Julian. And I'd have to know how Craig Johnson feels about Vince Young to say he could be joining there; I'm really not sure. I know a lot of people in the Titans were down on Young, but there are a lot of people that recognize he did have a 30-17 record as a starter and he does have talent. And we know the Vikings have a need. Vince there makes as much sense as anywhere, though I also don't mind Oakland as an option, either.
Hello Adam, why did the Dolphins hire Daboll? He seemed opposite of what Ross was looking for.
Adam Schefter (2:42 PM)
Nafis: It's partly that the Dolphins wanted him and partly that they struggled to get some of the other people on their wish list. Daboll was the happy compromise. He wouldn't have been their first choice, but they were good enough with him as the guy. And if it's any consolation, Daboll has a better reputation with football people than he does football fans.
Hey Adam, you rule so much. Thanks for being awesome! I was wondering if you think Green Bay will draft more DE's? Or someone else? Because their DE's are really good already??
Adam Schefter (2:43 PM)
Thanks, Jeriah. Green Bay is in a position in which it can afford to draft the best player that falls to it. Who knows who will be available at the Packers turn? I'd think they'd look for a defensive end, a running back, maybe another offensive lineman. But the Packers have positioned themselves into a good spot.
Matt Millen (foxboro)
Don't you just hate Jim Schwartz?
Adam Schefter (2:44 PM)
Not at all, Matt. I think Jim Schwartz has done a good job with the Lions. I think Detroit is a team to watch next season.
Any insight into why Jim Mora Jr. declined the DC jobs in Den & Phi, money? And who do you see as DC for the Broncos?
Adam Schefter (2:45 PM)
Pretty simple, Scott. He's got over $10 million due to him and he's got four kids at home. Coaches keep such long hours that, ultimately, Mora decided he'd rather be there for his family at this point in time. Makes sense. It was not an indictment of the jobs in Denver or Philly; for a while it looked like Mora would get and take one. But ultimately he decided that the time wasn't right for football; it was right for family. Sometimes we lose sight of the fact that these coaches are human. And it's a lot easier to be human when someone owes you over $10 million.
Anthony (New York City, NY)
Any news on the OC for the Chiefs? The earlier the better as the progression of Cassel & the Chiefs' 2011 draft might be different until an OC is hired??!!
Adam Schefter (2:46 PM)
Anthony: No matter who the Chiefs hire as their OC, it still sounds like Todd Haley will call the plays. I've gotten a lot of questions about the Chiefs OC, but it's really one of the more insignificant hires that will be made. The Chiefs offense will have Haley's imprint all over it.
SCHEF!, Got any advice for our mutual friend Mike Shanahan on how to fix the Redskins? Are Haynesworth and Mcnabb worth anything above a seventh rounder in trade value?
Adam Schefter (2:47 PM)
Maybe Mike can package Haynesworth and McNabb to Tennessee for Vince Young and a 6th, Joe. What do you think of that one? I don't know how to get that deal done, but I know Washington is willing to deal both those players, Tennessee is willing to deal Young, why not find some way to work it out? But first we need a CBA.
Hey Adam! Do you see a way the Jets can resign most of their unrestricted free agents?
Adam Schefter (2:48 PM)
By my count, Rute, the Jets have 17 free agents coming up. And there's no way they'll be able to re-sign all. No team can. And the more they win, the pricier the players will get to keep. But my suggestion would be worry about that when the new CBA is done. For now, enjoy Sunday's AFC Championship game.
Do you think the Giants will keep Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad bradshaw if not who do you think they keep.
Adam Schefter (2:49 PM)
I think both will be back, Tabitha, yes. Think Bradshaw's contract is up and New York will have to find a way to satisfy him. But again, there are so many uncertains right now that it's tough to say who will be playing where. But I think the Giants intend to hang on to both backs, yes.
Do you think the new rookie salary cap will be the catalyst for teams to trade into the top 10 in the draft?
Adam Schefter (2:51 PM)
It won't hurt, Mike, that's for sure. I think there will turn out to be a rookie cap for this year's draft class and none will be able to sign until there's a new CBA, which will include the rookie cap. So yes, teams could be more motivated than usual to trade up. But remember, if there's no CBA by the draft, teams will be unable to trade existing contracts of players for picks. Only pick-for-pick trades will be allowed without a CBA. Everyone starting to get an idea of how much is unsettled because of this CBA deal?
Adam, Broncos have to bring Champ back, right? Even if they are playing it close to the vest right now, they will at least franchise him. He still has some good mileage left I think.
Adam Schefter (2:52 PM)
Don't see them bringing back, Champ, Robb, no. They haven't had much contact with Champ or his agent since the season ended. He's a veteran cornerback who is going to want to play for a winner. Denver is far away from a Super Bowl. What sense does that deal make for either side? There will be contending teams that will be willing to pay Champ more, I think. But again, we'll just have to see.
Do you think a new cba deal gets done or are they headed for a lockout ?
Adam Schefter (2:52 PM)
Lockout's coming, Tabitha. There are people who hope and think something can get done by early March. I am not one.
Woody (Washington DC)
If Mike Shanahan doesn't improve the Redskins next year. Will Dan Synder dismiss him like Jim Zorn after his second season?
Adam Schefter (2:53 PM)
Dan Snyder wants to be patient and does not want to fire head coaches, Woody. But if the Redskins struggle next season, and have one of those ugly 5-11 campaigns, you know there will be calls for Shanahan's job. It's part of the whole deal.
Andrew Baker (Tupelo)
Where do you think McNabb will be next season?
Adam Schefter (2:54 PM)
Great question, Andrew. So many teams need QBs -- Miami, Minnesota, Tennessee, San Francisco, Seattle, Arizona. Could be almost any of them except Arizona, which never has been interested in dealing for McNabb for whatever reason.
Do you think the Bears will be extra motivated considering they are the underdog and playing at home? Seems they have recieved no love in the playoffs
Adam Schefter (2:55 PM)
Think that plays in, Dan. And I also think that everyone -- myself included -- believes Green Bay is going to win. And I can say Chicago responding the way the New York Jets and Bart Scott did last Sunday in New England. Even though I'm picking Green Bay, I will not be surprised in the slightest if Chicago wins the NFC Championsip and goes on to the Super Bowl.
Adam, who will be Miami QB next year and for the future?
Adam Schefter (2:56 PM)
Tough to match QBs and teams for next season, Dan. Just too hard right now when teams aren't talking or thinking about it. I remember speaking to an one head coach whose teams needs a quarterback and he was baffled as to how this will all work out.
Any chance A.J. Green slips to the Browns at 6?
Adam Schefter (2:57 PM)
Hard to see Green slipping out of the top five, David, but you never know. All depends on what teams need. Had Andrew Luck come out, your chances of getting Green at 6 would have been better. But I think even if Green is there at 6, I still think Cleveland is looking elsewhere. It has too many needs right now to think WR.
Andrew Luck (stanford University)
Am I more likely to turn into Peyton Manning or Matt Leinert on the staying for senior season level, and who do I most remind you of?
Adam Schefter (2:57 PM)
People say you remind them of Matt Ryan, Andrew. With the way you work, it sounds like you'll make it at the next level. Just keep working hard.
Evan (Damascus, MD)
Scheftyyy - Who should the Dolphins go for in the draft? Should we work on our RB position and work on Henne a little more, or try and get a true franchize QB in the first round (for the first time since Marino)? -Thanks!
Adam Schefter (2:58 PM)
If a back like Mark Ingram is there for Miami, Evan, he'd be tough to turn down. Every time I watched Ingram run, he reminded me of Emmitt Smith, who went in a similar spot in the draft.
Matt Hasselbeck (Seattle, WA)
Hey Adam, I was just wondering if Seattle is going to resign me for next year. I wasn't playing well for a while, but I hit a stride during the post season. I figure they will be drafting a QB like Ryan Mallet or maybe targeting someone like Kevin Kolb. Do the Seahawks think I could be a good mentor for them?
Adam Schefter (2:59 PM)
You're in a better spot than most people realize, Matthew. Arizona needs a QB. San Francisco needs a QB. And if you decided to spurn Seattle's offer, you'd swing the balance of power in the NFC West to whatever team you signed with. Like the spot you're in, and Seattle needs you more than you need it.
JOhn (Downers Grove, Illinois)
Is there anyone who has any faith in the Chicago Bears win this Sunday? I know ESPN is centered around east coast teams but I have not heard anything positive about the bears.
Adam Schefter (3:00 PM)
John: The Bears have gotten plenty of credit. And it always amuses me when fans get all defensive of their teams not getting enough credit. Trust me, if the Bears win Sunday, they're going to get praised for two straight weeks.
Marc (Malden, MA)
Is it a foregone conclusion that the Redskins will draft Cam Newton?
Adam Schefter (3:02 PM)
Definitely not a foregone conclusion, Marc, especially considering that the Redskins have not studied extensive tape of Newton yet. Will the Redskins be looking to draft a quarterback at No. 10 if one is worthy? Absolutely. But if he's so worthy, don't you think Arizona at No. 5, San Francisco at No. 7 and Tennessee at No. 8 also would pick him first? Washington's in a tough spot and it's not a foregone conclusion it'll go for Newton at all.Anyway, thank you for all your questions and your time. Enjoy Championship Sunday. And remember Sunday NFL Countdown will be on at a new time Sunday, from 1 to 3 pm., leading up to the kickoff of the NFC Championship game. Please tune in and have a great weekend.Adam
