Craig Haubert (3:01 PM)
Welcome. Big Day at ESPN Recruiting. We released updated player & class rankings
USCTrojanFan75 (Culver City, CA)
Craig: Talk about the decision to not promote De'Anthony Thomas to five-stars? Is it more a question about what position he plays or is it more about he's just not at the five-star level. Love your work and thanks!
Craig Haubert (3:03 PM)
Thomas is ranked as our No. 16 overall player so we obviously see a lot of ability when projecting as a college prospect. While a tough kid we just question his size to hold up at running back and power to consistently break tackles. It's hard in our eyes to label him as a five-star if we only see a change-of-pace type of back in college.
Craig Haubert (3:03 PM)
At corner he certainly has speed and will close and mix it up but at 5-foot-9 his height is a concern and we still feel like he needs some technical polish as a true corner. Very good prospect. Top 20 out of thousands says a lot, but with some questions he falls just a notch below the five stars.
thanks for the time craig, why only twelve "5-star" players in the whole class this year?
Craig Haubert (3:07 PM)
Steve I am glad you asked this question. First things first, 14 prospects have actually received five-stars in this class. That being said, we feel getting five-stars says a lot about what we think a player can accomplish in college and accomplish quickly. Yes more and more true freshmen are coming in and making an impact, but when you look at it only so many players in college football have a huge impact every year.
Craig Haubert (3:11 PM)
We look for the best players who can make an impact in college quickly and thus for the longest time. We don't freely hand out five stars and feel that, that distinction should mean something. It is a good class and what we feel is a good number of five-stars for a class. Thanks for the question.
John (Charleston, SC)
What are the chances that Isaiah Crowell will commit with Alabama after Hart had such a good game in the Amry All-American game?
Craig Haubert (3:13 PM)
John - it should not have an impact has Hart is being recruited to play corner for the Tide.
Cal Commit Maurice Harris is ranked very well (91) on EPSN but no so much on other other sites, What does Scouts Inc. see that the others are missing?
Craig Haubert (3:15 PM)
We feel like Harris has the size, strength and speed measurables to make a smooth transitions to the next level and quite possibly an early impact for Cal, at least in the red-zone where his length and extension combined with his overall athleticism pose a difficult matchup for smaller DBs. He needs to continue polishing his route running but its hard to ignore all the tools he has to develop.
Hearing a lot about Ben Councell really raising his stock?
Craig Haubert (3:18 PM)
My man Mike, I assume ND commit Ben is who you meant. Yes, his stock did go up with us & he made a jump to four-stars. Had a chance to study him closer down @ the Shrine Bowl of the Carolina's
Craig Haubert (3:19 PM)
I think he is a nice fit for the Irish's 3-4 defense.
Craig (Keystone Heights, FL)
Who in your opinion will be the number 1 class come signing day?
Craig Haubert (3:22 PM)
Texas is #1 right now, but it will be tough for them to hold off a few teams who could close real strong. I would think that FSU & Alabama both have a good shot to land at
Pretty much just looking for an answer why Coly Lyerla is only a 3 star Ath??? Look at his size, speed, physical ability?? Hope you pick my question because I think everyone from Duck county would love an answer.
Craig Haubert (3:26 PM)
There is no doubt Lyerla is talented jumbo-athlete but we feel he's a bit of 'tweener on both sides of the ball and may take him some time to develop from a skill-set standpoint once he settles in at one position. Looks like Oregon is recruiting him for offense and he does have the size, hands and range to produce at the H-back position but blocking skills are a question mark.
Casey (Fort Worth)
How is TCU not in the top 30 of ESPN when other sites have them at 20 & 25? TCU has more 4*, more 3* and a higher rated player than ESPN's #25? What gives?
Craig Haubert (3:31 PM)
Casey - thanks for the question. We only have a top 25 for class rankings at this point & TCU falls just short of that. That being said they are doing a great job on the recruiting trail and have been very hot the last few days. They have certainly become contenders for a spot in the top 25 and few more moves and TCU could become the 1st ever Non-AQ team to make the top 25 class rankings. I can understand some of your frustration, but enjoy TCU's success and believe me we are aware.
How come there is no evaluation for Denzel Perryman?
Craig Haubert (3:35 PM)
We have done around 3,000 evals and are still trying to track down film on a few remaining prospects. Perryman was recently evaluated. He lacks ideal measurables but is a strong downhill run filler who earned a 3-star grade. His report is up on his player page now.
Chad (Hilton Head Island SC )
whom do you think will be announcing there decisions on NSD?
Craig Haubert (3:40 PM)
Chad it seems that several top prospects will likely wait until NSD to make their announcement. Cyrus Kouandjio, Isaiah Crowell, Tim Jernigan, Gabe Wright, Christian Heyward are a few that come to mind.
Craig Haubert (3:42 PM)
We will be doing 10 hours of live coverage on ESPNU on NSD. We will have several prospects announce with us, so keep checking ESPN.com for updates.
How much does the loss of Tuitt hurt ND's class?
Craig Haubert (3:46 PM)
The Fighting Irish have been doing well on the recruiting trail and are closing strong. The pick-up of Ishaq Williams was big & getting A. Lynch back was even bigger. So there are positives for ND as far as recruiting defensive help. I do though think that the loss of Tuitt stings some. He is a great fit for the DE spot in their 34 defense and I felt like he was a key part of that classes front 7 haul. Not the end of the world - win some, loss some, but I don't think his departure should be just brushed off.
with the recent switching of stephon tuitt from notre dame to georgia tech, is there a possibility that tuitt allows brian kelly to use his in-home visit to sway him one more time, or is this a done deal? thanks.
Craig Haubert (3:47 PM)
Also on that subject. It looks like it is a done deal & he signs w/ GT. Also think it is a great get for the Yellow Jackets who also run a 34.
Any reason future buckeyes D. Grant and Braxton Miller dropped in the updated rankings? Bowl performances?
Craig Haubert (3:49 PM)
Grant did not drop from his CB positional spot he actually had a strong week in Orlando and impressed us with his overall play. He is not just quick and fluid, he showed a physical element to his game pressing and jamming.
Craig Haubert (3:50 PM)
Miller fell mainly from Wittek and Frazier having great weeks and the fact that we think he has further along to go with his reads and fundamentals as a passer than originally thought, Still a superb athlete and quarterback prospect.
Jimmy K (Toronto)
Craig, from a national perspective, how impressive is it for Mack Brown to hold the "current" #1 recruiting class this year? Afterall, my 'Horns did go 5-7 and replaced/replacing 6 coaches!
Craig Haubert (3:52 PM)
Jimmy it is impressive that Texas still sits at No.1. Not so much for the bad season - that happens now again, but because of the staff turnover. So it is impressive that Mack Brown has maintained that class & still holds onto that top spot. That being said Texas is a bit of a different animal than many other schools on the recruiting trail.
Craig Haubert (3:55 PM)
The Longhorns get almost all their prospects from in-state and many of them come on board early. For those reasons & Texas' reputation I think their class has a lot of loyalty and despite a rough year is staying committed.
Kennett (Muskogee, OK)
Why is Devonta freeman not in the EspnU 150? he had one of the best season of any back and he played some of the best florida had to offer.
Craig Haubert (3:57 PM)
He just made a major move up our rankings and thought he would with a breakout senior season in which he got to carry the load. Like Trent Richardson struggled with a bit early on at Alabama, we would like to see Freeman run with more patience, improve his skill-set as a zone runner and work on seeing and hitting the cutback, which he will be called on to more in college. Top-end speed is good but not in an upper-tier level in our eyes.
Watched Huggins play this year and he impressed me with his patience on blocks and then his burst. Reminds me of Curtis Martin alot. Rutgers have a good shot at him?
Craig Haubert (3:59 PM)
I believe they do. he is a great all-around back with a non-flashy, blue-collar type feel to his style. He reminds us of Ray Rice with better speed.
What are the relastic chances of New Mexico landing Cyrus Kouandjio?
Craig Haubert (4:02 PM)
Well like the lotto people say - you have to be in it to win it - & New Mexico is in it - so they have a chance. How realistic? I don't think very realistic. Would be very very surprised if he landed w/ them. Good pub for NM that he has them in his top 5, but I wouldn't expect him to go there.
V.P. (flint, michigan)
Who do you think Florida State most likely will sign.
Craig Haubert (4:05 PM)
I think FSU has a very good shot at landing at least Tony Steward & Nick O'Leary.
Ryan (Jacksonville, FL)
Craig, with who Miami has been able to pick up over the last couple of weeks in recruiting, coupled with who is out there that they could potentially land, do you see them being capable of finishing in the top 25 of recruiting?
Craig Haubert (4:09 PM)
Yes - I think Miami has a very good shot at getting back into the top 25. I have been impressed with the quick impact Al Golden has made on the recruiting trail and he has the Hurricanes in position to finish in the top 25.
Jay (Eugene, Or)
How realistic would you say South Carolina's chances were to land Clowney?
Craig Haubert (4:11 PM)
I think the Gamecocks are the team to beat. Who knows what could happen & the #1 overall player may wait until after NSD to announce, but I think South Carolina is in the best position to land him
Thomas (Lincoln, NE)
ESPN ranks Aaron Green higher than the other scouting services. What do you see in him that you like, and who would you compare his skill set to?
Craig Haubert (4:15 PM)
Really like Green. I think he got overlooked some because he played hurt as a junior & when i talked to him a few weeks ago he said he was still not 100-percent this past season. If he can get
Eric Heath (Athens, GA)
Even with Mark Richt's job in question, UGA still has a chance to land the "dream team." (Which could save his job). What are the chances UGA lands Crowell, Drew, Rome, and Mitchell? All are ESPN top 50 and have UGA in their top 2 or 3.
Craig Haubert (4:18 PM)
Georgia is in it for all 4. I think the most likely are Crowell & Rome. We will find out about Rome
what is explanation for jeoffrey pagan moving down?
Craig Haubert (4:23 PM)
Pagan is a very good prospect. His drop some in the 150 is two folded. First, it is a good class for DE's & some players like Chickillo
what position do you see athlete top 150 recruit Vad Lee ending up?
Craig Haubert (4:25 PM)
I think Vad Lee plays QB for Georgia Tech. He is a good fit for their offense and at least deserves a good look at QB first.
Joe (Columbia, SC)
How is Charon Peake a 5 star recruit?
Craig Haubert (4:28 PM)
Peake has disappointed us some when we have seen him in person and he did drop from the #1 WR to the
Sam (Virginia Beach, VA)
Why did Quan Bray move down?
Craig Haubert (4:30 PM)
While still an extremely quick, fluid and electrifying athlete in-person, Bray showed some difficulty getting off press as a receiver in Orlando and will need to add some strength, bulk and improve route running to make an impact at the next level. CB may end up being his spot before its all said and done.
Craig Haubert (4:34 PM)
