Adam Schefter (2:24 PM)
Welcome to the weekly Friday chat. Thank you in advance for your time and your questions. Hope we can get to as many as possible before the 3 p.m. Sportscenter on ESPN News. Thanks again. -- Adam
Nisarg (Tarboro, NC)
Do you think someone like Blaine Gabbert could rise to the #1 pick by draft time?
Adam Schefter (2:27 PM)
Haven't made enough calls on him yet to know for sure, Nisarg, but it doesn't sound that way right now. It sure sounds like he is the undisputed top quarterback, and there are any number of teams that need a quarterback. Reminds me a little bit of the year when Matt Ryan was the No. 1 QB and he went to the Falcons at No. 3, though in hindsight, Miami at No. 1 would have been a nice landing spot. OK, have a phone call coming in. Will be back shortly...
Alex (Omaha, NE)
Schef,I think you do a great job and look forward to reading the 10 spot every week. Which Superbowl team has the edge on special teams?
Adam Schefter (2:37 PM)
Thanks, Alex. Think I'd give a slight edge to Green Bay for its kicker and punter. Now at times this season, Green Bay has had so many injured players, that it was tough for the Packers to field reliable coverage units. But they seem to have overcome those problems for now, and Mason Crosby and Tim Masthay give them a slight edge.
Adam, what are the chances Plax is going back to the Giants? Eli seems to be okay with it...
Adam Schefter (2:38 PM)
Think there's an outside chance, Matt. Wouldn't rule out the Jets, either, with Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes each scheduled to be free agents. If Plaxico had his choice, I'd bet he'd like to stay in New Jersey and not have to uproot his family. But he's going to want to get back to football wherever it is. And I could see both New York teams expressing some mild interest.
Keith (Spring Creek, Nevada)
AdamIs Denver looking to draft best available player with 2nd overall pick Peterson from LSU would be a good pick
Adam Schefter (2:39 PM)
Have to take the best defensive player with the No. 2 pick, Keith, whether the Broncos determine it's Peterson, Fairley or Bowers. Any one of the three will help, and two will be there for them.
Gina (Fort Mitchell, Ky)
Why did I have to be born a Bengals fan? Is there any hope for us? Tell me something positive for once. Please.
Adam Schefter (2:41 PM)
Gina: Last season they won the division and were unbeaten in the AFC North. The league changes a lot from season to season. Last season the Bengals were up, this season they were down. With some good off-season moves, they could be back up. They're not as good an organization as Pittsburgh or Baltimore, but the Bengals do have some talent.
David Harms (Shelby, MI)
Adam great work as always! Would you say this is the most even matchup of Super Bowl teams in the 10 or 15 super bowls?
Adam Schefter (2:42 PM)
It's certainly the most evenly matched one that the Packers have played, David. I read in the Dallas Morning News this week that the Packers had been double-digit point favorites for each of their other Super Bowls. This one is much closer. There have been some other close Super Bowls in recent years -- just look at last year with the Colts and Saints. But this one seems especially compelling -- maybe because it's now.
Angelo (Renton, WA)
Donovan McNabb. Vince Young. Ryan Mallet. Charlie Whitehurst. Matt Hasselbeck. Jake Locker. Kyle Orton. Carson Palmer.Who do you think would be the best option for the Seahawks at QB next year, and what direction do you think they will go.
Adam Schefter (2:43 PM)
Kevin Kolb, Angelo. Would trade Philly what it wanted and make sure my franchise is set for the next 10 years. But my name is not Pete Carroll or John Schneider. If I couldn't get him, I'd re-sign Matthew Hasselbeck and draft another QB.
Is Deangelo Williams back with the Panthers or somewhere else next year?
Adam Schefter (2:43 PM)
My hunch is back, Jay. Don't think Carolina will let him get away. Carolina always could slap its franchise tag on him, and it will not surprise me if it does.
Mike (Kansas City)
Who do you think will be the Chiefs O.C. in 2011?
Adam Schefter (2:44 PM)
Said this during last week's chat, Mike. It really doesn't much matter. Still expect that Todd Haley will wind up calling the plays and having a heavy influence over the offense. No matter who they hire, Haley is going to oversee that offense.
MJ (Long Island)
Is DeAngelo Hall really in the Pro Bowl?? Is this just a bad nightmare? He gave up more TDs and Receptions than any other corner, and he was 2nd in yards allowed. I can name 30 CBs better than Hall.
Adam Schefter (2:45 PM)
And about 28 of them have pulled out of the Pro Bowl or couldn't go because they're in the Super Bowl, MJ. D Hall had a good year. He gave up some big plays, but made some as well. There definitely are better CBs, but he's better than you're giving him credit for.
mark fox (daytona beach, fl.)
will jeff fisher coach college football maybe?
Adam Schefter (2:46 PM)
Don't see that, Mark. See Jeff Fisher back in the NFL in 2012. Had he been let go a few weeks earlier, I believe he would have been a prime option for the Cowboys and/or the 49ers. But it happened so late, Fisher will be benched this season.
Patrick (Wayne, New Jersey)
Hi Adam, what are your thoughts on which Jet free agents they are most likely to retain? And who will likely be going?
Adam Schefter (2:47 PM)
By my count, Patrick, they have 17 free agents. Won't be able to keep them all. They have to find a way to keep one of their wide receivers, either Santonio Holmes or Braylon Edwards. They have to keep linebacker David Harris. It would be nice to keep Brodney Pool. But there's no way they'll be able to keep everybody. They're going to have to make some tough decisions. This is what happens when you have two back--to-back seasons of going to the AFC Championship game.
Mike (Bethlaham Park,NY)
Adam, I thought that was WRONG of the Green Bay Packers to not let their IR players take a team picture for the SuperBowl. I am glad they came to their senses and let them in.
Adam Schefter (2:47 PM)
Agreed, Mike. They recognized they made a mistake and corrected it. Good for them.
Mike McCarthy (Green Bay, WI)
Adam, stop tweeting about not being allowing into our team photo. Its a bad decision
Adam Schefter (2:48 PM)
Hey, you owned up to it, Mike. Good for you.
Do you know if the Browns are going to contact/or have they contacted Jim Zorn about a coaching position?
Adam Schefter (2:48 PM)
Could see that, Kyle. Could see Jim Zorn in play in Cleveland, Seattle and maybe some other places. He's not going to get the offensive coordinator job he would have liked, but he could be a nice addition for some staff.
Great stuff on Mike and Mike this morning, Adam. If a new CBA isn't agreed upon before the draft do we get traditional rookie salaries or will that be open until new CBA is complete?
Adam Schefter (2:49 PM)
Thanks, David. Basically, no rookies will be allowed to sign until there is a new CBA. And once there is a new CBA, it is expected to have a rookie salary cap that'll be different than rookie salaries in other years. Hope that explains it.
glad to see you kept the faith in the packers this season adam, when all the rest of the so-called "experts" picked against them like the fools that they are!
Adam Schefter (2:50 PM)
Haven't picked the Packers in every game this season, Brian, but I picked them in the postseason. And I picked them to go to the Super Bowl at the start of the season, though I missed on the Colts-Packers Super Bowl. Still undecided on the Super Bowl pick, but the Packers are good -- and will be very good for a long time.
Mike (Bethlaham Park,NY)
Do you think their is a realistic chance that the Buffalo Bills would select QB Blaine Gabbert with the 3rd overall pick?
Adam Schefter (2:51 PM)
A chance, Mike. Depends on how high they have him rated. If they think he's a franchise QB, it would be hard to pass him up. But they have so many defensive needs, my sense today is that Buffalo would opt for defense. But again, remember the cardinal rule: You cannot pass up a franchise quarterback in the draft. Ask Miami how that worked out.
Adam, what really happened in Tennessee? Is this really about Fisher wanting to add his son to the staff?
Adam Schefter (2:52 PM)
He wanted to add his son to the staff, Paul, yes. But I think that was just the straw that broke the camel's back. There had been an uneasy truce between the two sides, and both knew this day was coming. That just might have been the tipping point. Basically, Fisher's contract had one year left and he wasn't going to sign an extension, and the Titans weren't going to offer him an extension, and the divorce was inevitable. Might as well make it immediate.
Adam, 5 days have gone by now since the NFC Championship Game. Thoughts on Cutler now regarding him going to a restaurant the night of the game and in LA with his girl walking around on Wednesday? MCL injuries are painful moving side to side, not walking straight. Anyone see him running? No. Leave him alone for crying out loud.
Adam Schefter (2:54 PM)
Think you're confusing me with Derrick Brooks or Maurice Jones-Drew or some other players, Eric. I never got on Cutler. Just check my twitter timeline going back to last Sunday (@AdamSchefter). I always said a player's injury should not be questioned. The player deserves the benefit of the doubt. Why would I have to question Cutler when so many others have?
Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay, WI)
For the last time Schefter, I don't have a concussion...geez man
Adam Schefter (2:54 PM)
Never doubted you, Aaron.
Adam, you always seem to be on top of everything (of course that's your job). Keep up the good work. What really happened in Tennessee? I don't buy the reason that Adams wouldn't let Jeff's son on the staff. He basically sabotaged Jeff Fisher so he couldn't get another head coaching job. Bud's love for VY didn't last long. Were they talking an extension or no extension? SD and JAX would be great landing spots for Fisher. Thoughts?
Adam Schefter (2:55 PM)
There are a lot of issues that led up to this last issue, Eric. How the Vince Young situation was handled factored in. Maybe the addition of Randy Moss did. The team not performing well down the stretch. There are a lot of things. Everyone wants one reason to blame it on. But when someone coaches in one place 17 years, there are a lot of issues that build up over time.
Brian (Eunice, LA)
Adam love the hard work you do to get us the latest news. I'm a die hard Dallas. I just have one question. Do you know what changes R Ryan is planning to make on defense? I'm just curious to see if they are more interested in a CB, Safety, or DE.
Adam Schefter (2:57 PM)
Thanks for the kind words, Brian. Not sure what Rob Ryan will do. But I am sure he will make that defense tougher, sounder and better. Dallas has plenty of off-season needs -- offensive line, secondary, linebacker. But Rob Ryan will make the most of whatever talent he has. Think your defense is in good hands, Brian. All right, have to go get ready for the 3 pm Sportscenter. Please tune in to our 90-minute Sunday NFL Countdown this Sunday from 11 to 12:30 ET. Otherwise, we'll be in touch from Dallas. Have a great weekend, and thank you for your time and questions.Adam
