Chad Ford (1:01 PM)
Aloha everyone. Thanks for coming to the chat today. The trade deadline is just a couple of weeks away and everything is pretty quiet. But still plenty to talk about. Let's roll ...
Denver Nuggets (Colarado)
Can someone tell us what the Knicks can offer that's actually worth our while taking back? Otherwise we should just call Melo's bluff or just let him walk and lose up to $40 million right?
Chad Ford (1:04 PM)
There isn't going to be much. Danilo Gallinari, Landry Fields and Wilson Chandler is about the best they can do. But, one, they aren't offering all of that. And two, that's still less than what the Nets were willing to give them. That's why the Nuggets have been exploring other options (see the Lakers) and while I continue to believe that the Nets aren't out of this thing. Even if the Nuggets could get half of what the Nets were offering originally, it's better than most of the deals they're seeing and I still believe if push came to shove on Feb 22nd, Melo would agree to an extension in NJ.
Is LA really in the running for Melo?
Chad Ford (1:06 PM)
I think he'd be a great fit, and from what I can gather from league sources, he's very open to playing and signing an extension in LA. The problem is Jim Buss. He's a huge Andrew Bynum fan. Always has been. He doesn't want to trade him. It's hard for younger execs to let go of players they "discovered" if you will. They always value them higher than everyone else. Bynum is a good player. But with his history of knee injuries and given the current up and down play of the Lakers, Melo would be a great get ... and put the Lakers on top of the NBA heap for another few years. In other words, I think the Lakers are crazy not to do this deal.
Byron Scott (Cleveland)
Can you say something that will help or cheer up my team
Chad Ford (1:08 PM)
Trade deadline is just two weeks away. Some of you will be out of there really soon ...
Spree (South Carolina)
If you were the Knicks GM would you increase your offer? Knowing that A) Melo will join as a free agent if it comes to that B) Melo has shrugged off all other possibilities tradewise (ie Nets, etc) or would you play hardball up to the deadline.
Chad Ford (1:09 PM)
I think Donnie Walsh is playing this right. If he guts his team for Melo ... it's hard for him to put a contender on the floor. And, I honestly think the Knicks look at the possibility of Melo this year or Deron Williams or even Dwight Howard next year and they lean in that direction. If he comes this summer -- great. If he doesn't -- all is not lost.
Elton (New Jersey)
Why is Melo unwilling to direct a trade to the Bulls? Join Derrick Rose, Carlos Boozer and Joakim Noah under a good coach in Thibs and a big market?
Chad Ford (1:10 PM)
He's not unwilling. He likes to Bulls too. Problem is that if Rose, Boozer and Noah are off the table ... there isn't much to offer Denver. Luol Deng isn't getting it done.
The Rockets going to make any moves? They have so many assets and not enough minutes for all of them. Brooks/Lee/Hill enough to get an all star?
Chad Ford (1:12 PM)
They are working the phones. I've heard from a lot of teams that everyone on their roster is available right now. Darryl Morey is one of the more proactive GMs in the league. He's hunting. The problem is that there are so many conservative GMs ... it's not easy to make a deal.
Roddy (Portland (OR))
Cho said that he would be making moves. I can't see moving Camby or Miller right now, so that leaves Pryzbilla and someone else to use as trade bait. Any ideas Chad, cause us Blazer fans are waiting for good news rather then the injury news that seems to be all we get. Oh also LMA snubbed for All-Star, any comments about that?
Chad Ford (1:16 PM)
Blazers are active as well, though things are bit different in Portland now. Kevin Pritchard was one of the more aggressive GMs in the league. Cho is more like RC Buford, Sam Presti and the like that wait patiently for things to come to them. Andre Miller is a big asset for them (especially when his contract isn't guaranteed for next season) and I've heard a number of teams are also interested in Wes Matthews. Only two untouchables I think are Aldridge and Batum.
Jack (Flushing, NY)
Are the Hornets looking to keep David West? I think he is a FA after the season. Any trade rumors of him out there?
Chad Ford (1:19 PM)
They've offered him an extension but so far there's no deal. That could force their hand a bit. They don't want to lose him in FA and there will be a lot of interest in him. He's one of the few bigs on the market that can be a difference maker. They've been very proactive working the phones trying to add another veteran to the team to help the Hornets in the playoffs. Their name is coming up with a lot of GMs. Sounds like they'll pull of a deal before the deadline if they can.
Dusty (St. Louis)
How likely is it that the Pacers interim coach gets the job permanately?
Chad Ford (1:22 PM)
Frank Vogel has done a terrific job .... but it's way too early to tell. If the Pacers continue playing like they are now, he's got a great shot. But I think Mike Brown is waiting in the wings and would be a great choice as well. Pacers have a lot of assets right now. They're also a team I'm watching closely as the trade deadline approaches. They have a number of good expiring contracts (T.J. Ford, Mike Dunleavy, Jeff Foster), a good draft pick, some young players that they'd probably part with (Brandon Rush, etc.). They'll have a ton of money this summer, but if they can make the right deal now, I think they'd do it. Free agency is a bit of gamble. If you can secure your future now, I think you do it.
Hey Chad...So the Suns won't trade Steve Nash, will they try to bring in a good PF? They have Vince 17 millions expiring, thats a goos trading chip right?
Chad Ford (1:24 PM)
Yes and no. I have maintained this for months and still believe they SHOULD trade Nash. But so far the line from Phoenix remains the same -- he's not going anywhere. Carter is a decent chip. He's owed $4million on his contract next year, so it's not quite an expiring. There are better expiring contracts out there and given Carter's poor rep right now ... he's not as attractive as some other vets with expiring deals.
What's Jeff Green's trade value around the league right now? He's a Lamar Odom like player with a great skill set but he doesn't always produce.
Chad Ford (1:26 PM)
He's got a lot of value. A number of teams are interested. The Thunder are going to need a big man though ... that's what they're hunting for. There aren't a lot of them available right now.
Bill Simmons (LA)
Trade picasso here....Thunder get Nene, Lakers get Carmelo, Denver gets Jeff Green, Mo Pete and Bynum...who says no?
Chad Ford (1:28 PM)
Lakers would. But I do like that deal for all teams ... Nene would be a good fit in OKC if they could get him to sign an extension (he has an ETO at the end of the season). Green and Bynum would give the Nuggets two nice young pieces along with Ty Lawson and Arron Afflalo to build around.
If Ginobli, Gasol, Westbrook and LeBron and Bosh get injured can the Blazers win the title this year?
Chad Ford (1:32 PM)
Question of the day. Add Kobe, Duncan, Deron Williams, Chris Paul, Durant, Rondo, Derrick Rose, Dwight Howard and Dirk Nowitzki to the injured list and you've got a definite maybe.
Chad are you one of those that detracts from LBJ's MVP candidacy due to his supporting cast? It seems like we are heading to a travesty worse than the AI mvp in 2001. Another 40 point game last night, cavs lost 25 in a row, how is LBJ not MVP!!?
Chad Ford (1:35 PM)
He is by virtually every standard. Is he the best player in the league. Yes by virtually every measurement available. Is he the most valuable player to a team? Ask the Cavs. Does he benefit from playing with D Wade? Sure. Did MJ benefit from playing with Scottie Pippen? Or Bird with McHale and Parrish? Yep. I love Derrick Rose and I think he might win it based on what a great, humble kid he is and the terrific season he's having. But let's not kid ourselves. Love him or hate him, LeBron is hands down, the best player in the league.
Would either team do a Nene/JR Smith for Biedrins/Monta? Or a Nene/Al Harrington for Biedrins/Monta?
Chad Ford (1:36 PM)
I think there's some interest there on both sides. Too early to get an exact read -- the Melo stuff has to get taken care of first -- but the Warriors have been very active as well and want a dominant big man.
steve from battle creek (battle creek)
monroe reminds me of a young gasol. highly skilled big man. your thoughts?
Chad Ford (1:37 PM)
Let's not get carried away. He is very skilled and is having a good rookie season ... but he's not as polished or as aggressive a scorer yet. Still, given all that's gone wrong with Detroit the past couple of years, it's nice to see him playing well. They need a few breaks.
Matt (Chicago, IL)
Chad if MVP is best player how did Jordan not win the a million straight MVP's?
Chad Ford (1:39 PM)
He should've been. The media, as John Hollinger pointed out yesterday, too often get caught up in the great storyline instead of just doing our job of voting for the best player. It seems boring to keep picking the same guy. But if the same guy is the best every year, we should keep picking him.
If Roy Hibbert finishes the season strong (more games like last night's 20/10 outing), is he still in the running for Most Improved?
Chad Ford (1:40 PM)
I think Kevin Love already has the trophy on his mantle.
Does Harrison Barnes need a huge game tonight to be even considered as a top 5 pick in next year's draft?
Chad Ford (1:44 PM)
Yes and no. He's been terrific of late ... averaging 22.6 ppg over his last three games. He's more aggressive, taking better shots and he's been playing great D. In short, he's been the Harrison Barnes we thought we'd see all year. We already have him at No. 5 on our Big Board. While many scouts and GMs were disappointed, very few were writing him off. However, if he has a big game tonight against Duke ... it would be a big, big boost. Tons of scouts will be there. High pressure game. If he responds, and keeps playing like this, he'll be back in conversation for the No. 1 pick. People forget that Derrick Rose started off a bit slow out of the gate for Memphis before coming on in a huge way in the second half and the tournament. That's what Barnes needs to do. He finally has the point guard, Kendall Marshall, to help. I can't wait to see how he and a number of other top draft prospects like John Henson, Mason Plumlee, Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith respond. Great game.
Your Mock Draft has the Raptors picking Kanter. Don't we have glaring needs at PG & SF?
Chad Ford (1:46 PM)
True. But right now Raptors are drafting 5th and the best PG (Kyrie Irving) and SF (Perry Jones and Terrence Jones) are off the board. Plus Kanter does something that Andrea Bargnani doesn't -- he actually tries to rebound.
Can Kendall Marshall be a lottery pick by the time he leaves school? He seems much more skilled than Larry Drew.
Chad Ford (1:47 PM)
Probably not. He's not an explosive athlete and he's not a great scorer. But he can really pass the ball and run a team. It's a bit early for him, but down the road he could be a first round pick.
Jimmy the Greek (Mikanos)
IN a draft like this, at what 'number' do you think need should become the motivating factor over BPA - with such middling talent I'm thinking mid teens picks should focus on team need, no?
Chad Ford (1:48 PM)
I think for the most part, team need almost always rules the day in the NBA unless there's a clear talent disparity. This year, with no clear No. 1... I think the team need thing probably starts with the No. 1 pick.
Michael (Democratic Republic of Congo)
In my mind, the Nets biggest need is a 3, and I think Terrance Jones looks perfect for them. How concerned should I be that he could wind up a bust?
Chad Ford (1:49 PM)
Love his game. His body language sometimes bothers me and he doesn't always play hard. But he has a ton of tools and you're right, he'd be a good fit in NJ.
Do you think that Ben Hansbrough has a shot at making the NBA?
Chad Ford (1:50 PM)
Great college player. But scouts aren't very excited.
What are your thoughts on Purdue's JuJuan Johnson? He has improved every year at Purdue, has good size and athleticism, and started to put some weight on this past year.
Chad Ford (1:52 PM)
I like him. He's also really improved his face the basket game. He looks like he's a solid first round pick right now.
if the cavs draft perry jones he will be a huge stiff. if they pass on him he becomes a perennial all star, right?
Chad Ford (1:53 PM)
Wow. Things are really getting dark in Cleveland. Step away from the ledge Griffin. It gets better ...
Louie (Bristol, TN)
Is Tyler Zeller considered a first round draft pick if he comes out?
Chad Ford (1:55 PM)
Some scouts think so. I've struggled to see that one ... but I have a number of scouts telling me they'd take him mid first round. He's another interesting name to watch. Plumlee is ranked higher on our board.
Scott (Los Angeles)
What is the ceiling on Jordan Hamilton?
Chad Ford (1:56 PM)
Where does Klay Thompson go in the draft?
Chad Ford (1:56 PM)
Mid to late first round.
Mr. Mojo Risin (Venice, CA)
Kyrie Irving is undersized, skinny, and possesses average athleticism. Is he the next Chris Paul or the next Mike Conley?
Chad Ford (1:57 PM)
Neither. I don't think he's an elite guard the way Paul, Deron Williams or Derrick Rose is. But I think he has a lot more to his offensive game than Conley.
i havent heard about Jimmer in a few hours...is he ok?
Chad Ford (1:58 PM)
Yeah he's fine. Gotta run everyone. We'll do this again next week. Aloha!
