Mark "Guru" Garrow (2:55 PM)
Good afternoon everyone...I hope it's all good in your corner of God's country...Weather is great over here in North Carolina..Finally, it feels like spring is coming...so now without further delay...let's get this partayyyyy started!
Bill Scott (Lake Summerset, Illinois)
Hell-o Mark, I think I'm just going to throw darts at the board and let those numbers be the cars I pick this week. If they wreck or blow-up, I've had 'em on my team. Bill
Mark "Guru" Garrow (2:58 PM)
Bill I can feel your pain..a 14 car pile-up at Phoenix are you kidding me? I've scored 102 and 115 the first two weeks and that is paaaaathetic. And what's worse is that for a bunch of teams we should have gotten a glimpse last week at how good they are against the competition on a downforce track and we didn't, which means a little more shooting in the dark this Sunday.
Note to self: Do not doubt Hendrick...ever. lol. (By the way, it's great to see that you're in the new NASCAR video game! Congrats!)
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:00 PM)
Got to eat a little crow on the Hendrick deal last week don't I...well can I at least get a little salt and pepper plus a little marinara sauce?..lol....and thanks on the video game deal it was fun and now I can cross it off my bucket list.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who do you think will win the Sam's Town 300 & Kolbolt Tools 400 in Las Vegas?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:01 PM)
Kyle Busch and then Carl Edwards on Sunday..just like it should have been last week...Do I sound bitter? YOU BET I AM!!!!!!! :)
howdy mr. garrow, hope all is well. I have a question for you: How do you think Menard and Bobby Labonte will do this weekend? Menard was really good on the 1.5 milers last year with RPM and RCR has done well here recently, and Labonte has had some really good finishes here lately, except for last year when he finished around 40th, but he was in the lousy 71 car too...thoughts?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:03 PM)
First off Daniel...Bobby Labonte was a start and park last year for this race so that's why he was 40th...As for this year, he intrigues me because I don't know if you know it but he's ranked 15th in points scored the last four races at Las Vegas, and that includes last year. He could be a sneaky 15th to 20th place finishes. I also think eventually Menard is really going to rolling in the RCR cars on the 1.5-mile tracks and this weekend could be the start of it.
hey mark, can you rank the following drivers for me, thanks: 00, 1, 4, 5, 20, 31, 33, 56...thanks a lot!
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:04 PM)
Well here's what I'll do Steve...Here's this week's pre-race top-30 rankings from the Guru....1.Carl Edwards2.Kyle Busch3.Greg Biffle4.Jimmie Johnson5.Jeff Gordon6.Kevin Harvick7.Denny Hamlin8.Kasey Kahne9.Matt Kenseth10.Mark Martin11.Jeff Burton12.Clint Bowyer13.Tony Stewart14.Joey Logano15.Kurt Busch16.AJ Allmendinger17.Dale Earnhardt, Jr.18.Ryan Newman19.Jamie McMurray20.Paul Menard21.David Reutimann22.Juan Pablo Montoya23.Marcos Ambrose24.Bobby Labonte25.Regan Smith26.Martin Truex, Jr.27.David Ragan28.Brad Keselowski29.Brian Vickers30.Casey Mears
Big T (WYO)
Good afternoon Guru. Do you think Kahne will be a better pick over Jr., AJ, and Truex at Vegas? I am thinking Red Bull does a pretty good job on the mile and half tracks. How do you see Mark Martin doing this week, I have to pick between him, the 39,1,00,42,20. I am also thinking that the 78 will outrun the 2 and 9 since he has ECR engine any thoughts? Thanks as always.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:07 PM)
Big T..word....I actually think all three of those drivers will do pretty well Sunday..but I think you're right Kahne has the most upside..looked good last week...his strength is 1.5-mile tracks and same goes it seems for Red Bull Racing. Martin again is potential top-10 and I'd take him from the group you listed. I'd take the 78 over the 2..but not so sure about the 9, which is basically another Roush Fenway Ford.
Nick Rolando (Orlando)
Mark, pre-lim for Las Vegas is: Yahoo: 24-4-33-6 and ESPN: 24-99-4-5-6. Thoughts for change, I was thinking of maybe Bayne or Ambrose for Ragan possibly on ESPN.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:09 PM)
Nick..on paper teams look okay...but I'm divorcing myself from David Ragan for awhile..he keeps killing my teams and I keep taking him because he runs fast in practice is like a woman who's tenth months pregnant - way overdue for some good luck.
Paul (West Orange)
24, 29 or 31 this week? Can only use each driver twice throughout the whole season. I think the 24 and 29 have a shot to win but the 31 could be my good 'value" pick considering this is one of his best tracks and might be my best chance to use him throughout the year. Thoughts?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:11 PM)
Toughie Paul...I have Gordon and Harvick ranked fifth and sixth respectively and Burton 11th..Burton's luck goes back two months into the end of last season so I'm staying away until that team finds the golden horseshoe.
How do u think Mark will do in both Nationwide & Cup races this weekend? Who will win a race 1st the 5 or 88? When do u think they will win
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:13 PM)
Mark is about a lock for a top-10 in both right off the truck...and the way things look Martin will get back to victory lane before Junior..both, though, headed in the right direction now.
hey mark, think Jimmie's a safe bet for a top 5 or top 10 this week, i mean he does have 3 wins in the past 5 races here after all.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:18 PM)
He's certainl a lock top-10 or higher..so yes he'll be his normal tough self this weekend.
Did u know Mark has 3 wins in 5 starts at Vegas. His worse finish is 6th.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:19 PM)
Are you talking the Nationwide Series side I would assume. Still too much Kyle Busch on Saturday I'm afraid...I also want to make it clear on this one I would be more than happy to be wrong and have Mark wind up in victory lane.
PAUL (Stockton CA)
Good afternoon all knowing Guru. What is your opion on the new point system? The nascar writers periodically over the last several years, have stated the old point system made Nascar unique compared to Indy Formula1 point systems. Will the field figure out that 1 point isn't worth the reward to gain one position, compared to the risk of losing 15 to 30 points do to a mistake? Nascar is rubbin and banging is racing, unlike Indy and F1.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:36 PM)
You make some good points Paul, but the other system was just too hard for most new fans to get a handle on. This is a lot more simple..problem I have with it, and it's not that big of a deal, is that separation from 1st to 43rd, percentage wise, is now way too big..I'll tell you one thing it truly is weird to look at the points and see dramatically reduced number for the leader..Hope it all works out the way NASCAR planned because I would hate to see too much more monkeying around with the points. I would much rather have them put more cars in the Chase and have knockout rounds just like a true playoff.
How can the fastest sport of all seem so slow? Watching on TV is it looks about as fast as cars look from your little window on an airplane. Maybe I need to go to a Nascar race live?
Mark (3:41 PM)
Mark that would be a great idea...come out to Las Vegas this weekend I'm sure they've got a few tickets left...You're right TV can sometimes make it slow..but if you really want to get the feel for the real deal...go to a race and then walk as close to the retaining wall as they'll let you somewhere on the frontstretch...Whe they rip by you at close to 200 mph, engines roaring..burbing raw fuel and are merely a rainbow blurr...my friend that will give you a big shot of adrenaline.
who do yo seeing good at las vegas. and what do you think of kasey kahne
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:45 PM)
I think Kasey's going to be very good this week just as he was at Phoenix..remember that was his worst track...1.5-milers are his best...here again is my pre-race top-30...1.Carl Edwards2.Kyle Busch3.Greg Biffle4.Jimmie Johnson5.Jeff Gordon6.Kevin Harvick7.Denny Hamlin8.Kasey Kahne9.Matt Kenseth10.Mark Martin11.Jeff Burton12.Clint Bowyer13.Tony Stewart14.Joey Logano15.Kurt Busch16.AJ Allmendinger17.Dale Earnhardt, Jr.18.Ryan Newman19.Jamie McMurray20.Paul Menard21.David Reutimann22.Juan Pablo Montoya23.Marcos Ambrose24.Bobby Labonte25.Regan Smith26.Martin Truex, Jr.27.David Ragan28.Brad Keselowski29.Brian Vickers30.Casey Mears
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
When will we see Danica Patrick race in her very first Sprint Cup Series Race?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:45 PM)
Maybe sometime next year..don't see it happening in 2011.
GURU, First, how is the back recovery progressing? Hope it is going well. I am having a hard time getting a handle on this season so far( I know I'm preaching to the choir...LOL), but pre-race markers (average practice speed, qualifying, pit selection) don't seem to be working! Is it going to be LUCK until things settle down? Thanks as always for all the hard work.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:56 PM)
Thanks for the props on the back Richard...I'm heading for Vegas Thursday to do it all again..I'm like you so far this year...up is down..down is up...it's been all about luck and really not a lot about on track performance..although I did pick out Kahne at Phoenix and he came through...Wouldn't it be something if Vegas turned out to be the place luck went out the window?..lol
Paul (Stockton CA)
What are your thoughts on Logano? Last two races at LV 13 and 6.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:57 PM)
He could be a real sleeper this weekend Paul..not just because of Vegas...but at the end of the year last year he had gotten rolling on the big tracks pretty well and was sixth in the season-finale at Homestead..I expected big things from him last week and he was bullet fast..shame his engine let go and let him down.
who do u c making the chase this yr?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:00 PM)
wow..toughie...Johnson, Gordon, Harvick, Kurt and Kyle Busch...that's five...Tony Stewart...Biffle...Kenseth...Edwards..Stewart...that's what I'm thinking now.
seems i might like reutti and newman a little more then you this weekend, your thoughts on them?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:02 PM)
Last three races at Vegas Newman's best is 14th..with an 18th and 25th...not one of his most impressive places...Reuti 13th and 4th...Here's the thing.haven't seen a lot of speed out of the 00 yet..not a good thing for a track like Vegas..Love to see those guys run well this weekend just not sure they will.
Mark, you seem to agree with the new points system. Alot of you NASCAR media people always seem to side with NASCARs way of thinking. I think the new system sucks, and was put in to help TV and media people figure out points. TV can't even put points on screen the way the drivers get them, they show first place and then go down the line -1,-2,-3,etc. With the way the points are now , it takes a car 20 spots to make up 20 pts, before they could make up 20 pts by 4-7 positions.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:07 PM)
I agree that's the downsize to the new system Doug..but I've been around this sport at this level for nearly 30 years and I constantly had to refer to the rule book to check the points so that means a new fan or newer fans doens't really have a chance to understand it. And please don't lump me in a group that just gives NASCAR a free pass..They've done a lot of things correctly but over the years I've gotten into trouble more than once because I vehemently was against what they were doing..the latest when they put a wing on the back of these cars..said they were ugly..said the fans would hate them and felt someday they would have to change their mind and to their credit they did...I called first COTs "Pork Chop" cars because you would have had to slather pork chops on the windshield to get real race to even look at them..I love NASCAR official Brett Bodine but boy did he get mad at me for calling the COT that..lol..
As far as a knockout chase system, the drivers knock themselves out good enough without NASCAR doing it for them. Why not just have the ALL-STAR race at end of season and have ALL the drivers in heat race type races where if you don't win, you would need to get in the shootout (feature) by way of last chance races. Then if you beat the year long (REAL) champion you would win A million in the feature race
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:08 PM)
I like your style Doug...Never going to happen but I love your style!..lol
Guru I'm in the hole. . .last team to pick a driver this week out of my 15 team league. . .33, 1, 20, and 39 are left. think i have to take the 33, but his driver ratings really werena??t that good when he finished well last year (89.4 & 84.8). thoughts?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:10 PM)
David, I think Bowyer is a pretty safe pick this week..I have him ranked 12th going in..but would have have liked to put him up another position or two but recent bad luck has me a little gun shy on Clint. He loves Vegas and told me a couple of weeks ago he thinks he's got legit shot to win..
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:11 PM)
Got to run everybody...our race day chat from Vegas will get underway at 1:00 eastern time..so please join us to get the lastest info from the crew chiefs...until then have a great week and may the force be with you...thanks everybody "The Guru has left the building"!
