Quint Kessenich (2:31 PM)
Hello lacrosse fans. The season is heating up as the weather improves. Let's answer some questions.
Who's got your vote for player of the year?
Quint Kessenich (2:33 PM)
It's still early but I'd say Rob Pannell of Cornell, Shamel Bratton of UVA, Kevin Crowley of Stony Brook are the three frontrunners. This year there are about 30 another guys that are right behind them. The race is wide open.
Which teams have surprised you this season?
Quint Kessenich (2:34 PM)
Villanova is a big upside surprise. Princeton is a downside surprise. UMass and Ohio State are also upside surprises.
Albany has a few good wins on the season already. How good are they?
Quint Kessenich (2:36 PM)
Well Albany got dusted last night by Syracuse in the Carrier Dome. They will have to beat Stony Brook to win the American East conference and they will have to play John Hopkins out of conference. I think they have improved but they aren't a lock for the playoffs just yet at 3-2.
Who can we expect to see in the Final Four?
Quint Kessenich (2:38 PM)
Things can change quickly but I'm still sticking with my original four. Syracuse, Notre Dame, Virginia and Maryland because of their overall quality and the senior classes those teams have. Come NCAA tournament time you can't undervalue the importance of the senior class. You can also make a case for Army, Cornell, North Carolina, and Stony Brook to make playoff runs.
Is there anyone left on Syracuse's schedule that has a chance of beating them?
Quint Kessenich (2:40 PM)
Yes. Syracuse right now is 5-0 but they still have to play John Hopkins, Villanova, Duke, Princeton, Cornell and Notre Dame. Somewhere along the line it's likely they will stub their toe but going undefeated isn't out of the question.
Is Tim Desko going to be consistent all year? Or is he just a human highlight reel?
Quint Kessenich (2:41 PM)
He had another great game last night and as a left-handed goal scoring attackmen, he will get many chances to shine. There is no reason why he won't score 40 or more goals.
I was at the game last night in The Dome, Tommy Palasek looked real good. Did the Orange find the 2nd line production they were looking for?
Quint Kessenich (2:43 PM)
As a Cuse fan, that's what you hope. Palasek has been missing in action prior to last night and Syracuse has not been getting the complementary scoring that they hoped for. Hopefully the light bulb has finally come on.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
Were you surprised Carolina went up to Princeton and took out the Tigers?
Quint Kessenich (2:44 PM)
Not really. I watched the game on ESPNU and it didn't look good when they fell behind 3-0. But UNC is now 5-1 and have won four games in a row. They have a huge game Thursday night on ESPNU at 7 p.m. ET against Duke.
Who's the next "BCS" school to start up a lacrosse program? I heard rumblings about Michigan or Oregon?
Quint Kessenich (2:46 PM)
I've talked to the Michigan AD Dave Brandon and he is investigating ways to pay for a men's and women's D1 program. I personally would love to see D1 programs at Boston College, Connecticut, Wake Forest and Florida State.
What's you take on Hopkins thus far?
Quint Kessenich (2:47 PM)
Hopkins is 5-1 and are playing excellent defense but I'm not convinced they can hang with the big boys of the top 10. Hopkins has lost nine of their last 10 against top 10 teams.
What do Rhamel and Shamel Bratton need to do for people to see their college careers as successful?
Quint Kessenich (2:49 PM)
In my eyes, they have been successful. Shamel has accomplished everything except winning a national championship. Rhamel has been superb in his senior season but lacrosse is a team sport and they will be linked to their team's success.
What teams do you think are under performing right now?
Quint Kessenich (2:50 PM)
Princeton has had a rough start against a vent tough schedule. Navy, Towson, Georgetown, UMBC and Delaware have been disappointing as well.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
Nicky Gelasso received a lot of hype coming into the season, but what other freshmen are you excited to see this season and that people should look out for?
Quint Kessenich (2:59 PM)
North Carolina has a handful with Mark McNeill and R.G. Keenan. Tom Schreiber of Princeton, Jordan Wolf of Duke and Rob Emery of Virginia have also impressed me.
Quint Kessenich (3:01 PM)
Two good games on the ESPNU this week. Duke at North Carolina Thursday night at 7 p.m. ET and John Hopkins--Syracuse Saturday at 6 p.m. ET. Both will air on ESPNU. Enjoy the games!
