Banks |
Banks will be participating in the Celtics mini-camp from July 10-13 at the Sports Authority Training Center at Healthpoint. Banks then will get his first taste of NBA action when he participates in the 2003 Reebok Pro Summer League held at Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium at University of Massachusetts-Boston campus from July 14-20.
Banks, out of UNLV, was the 13th overall selection of the Memphis Grizzlies, but was traded, along with Kendrick Perkins, to the Celtics in a draft night trade. He played his first two seasons of college basketball at Dixie (UT) College before transferring to UNLV. Banks started all 63 games he appeared in at UNLV. As a junior he earned Second Team All-MWC honors and was named MWC Defensive Player of the Year. He led the MWC in steals and ranked sixth in scoring (15.8 ppg). His senior season he led the conference in assists and steals (7th in the nation) and ranked second in scoring (20.3 ppg). Banks was named MWC Co-Defensive Player of the Year his senior season.
Jay (Boston,Ma)
So far, what do you think of Boston? The town? the media? the history and tradition?
Marcus Banks (1:16 PM)
All that's been very interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing the town. Being from Vegas, I haven't seen much of the water, but I love it and can't wait to move up there.
Worcester
While at UNLV, was it at all hard to stay out of the Casinos and away from the night-life?
Marcus Banks (1:17 PM)
Not really. You get used to it. Being born and raised in Vegas, that's just everyday life for me.
Dan (Freetown)
Welcome to Boston. Would you describe yourself as a "pass first" point guard, or as a scorer?
Marcus Banks (1:18 PM)
I would say a pass-first guy. I'm a two-point guard. I can do anything a point guard can do, but I like to be a threat too.
derren, hawaii
marcus, being that the nba schedule is more than twice the duration of the college season, how do you think you'll hold up as the season goes into the stretch run?thanks, derren
Marcus Banks (1:18 PM)
I think I'll be fine. I'm in real good shape. I don't think I'll hit the rookie wall this year. I'm only 21, I should be alright.
Aaron Burns from Valdese,NC
What was going through your mind when the Grizzlies picked you at 13?
Marcus Banks (1:19 PM)
Actually I was happy to be in the NBA. But I was a little disappointed because I wanted to be in Boston. So you can imagine my excitement when the trade went down.
phoenix, az
Marcus, Who are some of the current NBA point guards that you have scrimmaged against and how have you done against them? Whose game is most similar to your own?Hoping you bring down the house in beantown for years to come!Ron
Marcus Banks (1:20 PM)
Some of the guards have been Steve Francis, Gary Payton, Steve Nash. When they come into town they're looking for some good runs. So we play them. It's a lot of fun.
franklin
How do you think you will do in the summer league...what have you been working on to help you prepare for it.
Marcus Banks (1:21 PM)
The one thing that I do is my reps to make sure that I"m consistent. I've been doing this for some time, so I think I'll be fine in the summer league.
Scott (Fall River, MA)
Marcus, I know that the Celtics have a complicated defensive scheme in place and I was wondering If you feel like you will be up to speed and ready to go when the season starts?
Marcus Banks (1:21 PM)
I don't think it'll be any problem. Defense is something I love to play.
Ben (Las Vegas)
Here at UNLV, we are going to miss you. How do you think the Rebels are going to do this year without you, Dalron and J-Lew.
Marcus Banks (1:22 PM)
It's basically like any other b-ball team. When you lose three players like that it's tough. But they have good recruits coming in. So they'll be fine.
Springfield
marcus we know the celtics can score with the two all stars they have, but whats the most important thing your going to bring to the celtics
Marcus Banks (1:23 PM)
Getting them easier shots. Being more exciting and getting an up and down pace.
jmoses lv nv
Its time baby to show the league who the best point guard in the draft really is , just one question Marcus ,who do you think you will have the toughest match up against this year? Much love from LV !!!!!!
Marcus Banks (1:23 PM)
I like to just lace up my sneakers and get out there against anyone I play.
tj,springfield
marcus, what nba player did you idolize growing up?
Marcus Banks (1:24 PM)
I would say more than anyone else it would be Michael Jordan. The way he handled himself and the way he competed on the court. I try to do that every time I go out.
Ron Flanders (Solana Beach, CA)
Marcus, the Mountain West Conference is a far cry from the NBA. For starters, the three-point line is much further, and you'll be facing tough defenders like Jason Kidd, Eric Snow and Darrell Armstrong. How confident are you that you can make the transition to be a contributor at this level?
Marcus Banks (1:25 PM)
I think that's what the practices are going to do for me. I think people will be surprised by my speed and quickness on the court.
David (Las Vegas)
Marcus, I watched you for the last two years and really enjoy your game. My question is: Given that the Celtics have not really had a consistent fast break in a while, what do you think are the greatest challenges that you, personally, and the team, in general, will face in making this aspect of the game a strength. Also, what guys do you really look forward to having on your wings as you streak down the floor?
Marcus Banks (1:26 PM)
Of course, with Paul and Antoine being on the wing, I need to put them into good spots. If we get rebounds and get me out on the wing, I hope to get out and score.
AI Belmont
Whats up Marcus? I just wanted to say I am lookin forward to seein you play with the celtics this season. Also I wanted to know what your thoughts were when you heard David Stern announce your name? and did you mind being traded?
Marcus Banks (1:27 PM)
Basically, it's any kids dream. But also, going through the emotions of going to Boston, it was very much a high for me.
Marcus Banks (1:28 PM)
First off I want to thank everyone for getting on line. Sorry I couldn't have answered all the questions. But I will next time. Come out and see us with Boston and all over the NBA.
