Tom Haberstroh (3:03 PM)
Greetings, folks. Heat have won 5 straight ahead of their matchup with Cleveland tomorrow. No. 1 seed is attainable, but unlikely. What's on your mind?
How about this great offense recently? What do atribute it to? bibby? pick and roll? wade just being a beast? How would bulls and celtics defend these new plays?
Tom Haberstroh (3:05 PM)
Bibby has been a nice boost, providing knock down shooting and stabilizing that backcourt. All that said, Bosh remembering he's a power forward has probably the biggest effect. He's averaging 20 and 9 in March.
Eddie House (Miami)
yo Tom, I'm thinking about jacking up a few more hurried 3-pointers early in the shot clock, your thoughts?
Tom Haberstroh (3:07 PM)
You'll be benched anyway. Remember when you didn't play in December? That's what the playoffs will be like, especially once Chalmers comes back.
LeBron is killing it in March, shooting nearly 58% from the floor, is there anyone in the East who might snatch away his third Eastern Conference player of the Month?
Tom Haberstroh (3:09 PM)
Have you SEEN what Dwight Howard's doing these days? Here's a reminder: 23 points, 16 rebounds, and 4 blocks a game.
Numbers and standings aside, can the Heat realistically win the East? Especially with the Celtics stumbling and the Bulls' lack of experience?
Tom Haberstroh (3:11 PM)
Given the Heat's cake schedule, the Heat could win out the rest of the way. Even so, I don't see how the Bulls "lack of experience" slows them down enough. Hollinger's odds give the Heat a 7 percent chance at nabbing the No. 1 seed.
What are the heat going to do with bibby in the playoffs? He helps the offense for sure, but he is horrible on D. Is he going to cover allen/bogans, and let wade cover rose/rondo???
Tom Haberstroh (3:13 PM)
They'll try to hide him defensively, but he'll be on the top of every game plan in the playoffs. Wade and LeBron will switch off Rose/Rondo in the playoffs.
Pierce (Portland, OR)
Shouldn't the fact that Rose is only shooting 44% from the field count for anything in the MVP race vs LeBron who is shooting 50%?
Tom Haberstroh (3:15 PM)
Here's a little secret: Rose is shooting 40 percent since All-Star break and 28.4 percent from downtown. Didn't realize this until I read this terrific piece from my man Mark Haubner: (http://thepaintedarea.blogspot.com/)
Channing Frye (PHX)
Right on, Eddie!
After signing the greatest free agent in the history of the NBA, to go along with re-signing all-NBA Dwyane Wade and perennial all-star Chris Bosh, anything short of a championship is a failure in the eyes of the entire league. Winning streaks are fine, but as long as there is just one team better than you, you aren't gonna be champions. The Heat still have interior issues, and still don't have a PG who can defend penetrating PGs. Teams with these two strengths are the teams the Heat have lost to all year. What has changed? Can the Heat really beat the Celtics?
Tom Haberstroh (3:20 PM)
Heat didn't know what they were doing in the first couple weeks of the season when they lost to the Celtics twice. Accounting for home court advantage, the C's three point win in February was basically a draw. These two teams are even at this point -- and given the recent play, the Heat may have the edge. It all gets reset in the playoffs though.
Udonis Haslem (Miami)
Will i be in uniform during the playoffs? i really want to help :(
Tom Haberstroh (3:21 PM)
I saw you dunking in practice but you still can't pivot off that foot. I'm not sure you play before the regular season ends.
Hey Tom,As a person thats close to the team, what do you think of our shooters coming down the stretch and heading into the playoffs?By role players I mean Miller/Jones/House/BibbyI've seen some improvement over the past few games but do you think they can get it together in the next 9? If these guys are hitting shots, the Heat are ridiculously tough to beat.Your thoughts?
Tom Haberstroh (3:24 PM)
Heat are 8-12 when they shoot below 30 percent. For all the talk about the Big Three, the Heat die by the three -- a lot. You can't predict how these shooters will do, but Bibby/Jones/Miller/House is as strong a shooting core as anyone. LeBron and Wade certainly can't be depended on from there.
How can Lebron be MVP when he has not 1 but 2 teammates who can score 30+ a night?
Tom Haberstroh (3:25 PM)
Because he's the best player in the league?
Jason (San Francisco)
Is there anybody voting for LBJ for MVP? He's won more East player month/weeks than DRose. Factor that along with how the Cavs have plummeted it's obvious who the MVP should be. Right?
Tom Haberstroh (3:25 PM)
Candidate? Yes. Obvious? Not even close. I'm leaning toward Dwight Howard right now but it's coming down to the wire between him and LeBron.
Does Wade, Bosh or James trust anyone else on the roster?
Tom Haberstroh (3:27 PM)
See Philly on Friday night. Detroit 1/28 and Oklahoma City 1/30 if you want to go back further.
should the heat look into signing chuck hayes?
Tom Haberstroh (3:30 PM)
Funny you should ask. Kevin Arnovitz and I were just talking about this last night. Won't solve their offensive woes there, but would be a nice complement to the Big Three and Spoelstra's defense. Excellent defender and solid rebounder. I don't know if they'd be willing to spend their previous cash on another defensively focused big though.
thomas (south carolina)
Have u seen Dwade in March? ?He is going to nab is 2nd player of the month award, No?
Tom Haberstroh (3:32 PM)
No. Got your "Dw"'s mixed up. Dwight Howard is on another level right now.
Are the Heat "saving" things like LBJ at the 4 lineups or LBJ/D-Wade pick and rolls for the playoffs since they aren't usually used but they work pretty well?
Tom Haberstroh (3:35 PM)
Spoelstra has maintained that he can't hide these things because the players need to practice it in real-game situations. But then last night after the game, he joked with the media that we'd diagram their pick-and-roll at 118-115 mark and blow his cover. That was a beautiful play -- I wrote about it today's piece and he said he's kept it "in his pocket." I think his back pocket is pretty full right now with stuff.
The media is handing Derrick Rose the MVP but Lebron has been able to put up better numbers and averages .9 less assists per game. Has the media's portrayal of Lebron impacted the MVP race?
Tom Haberstroh (3:36 PM)
LeBron's rough relationship with fans is his own doing, not the media. Media getting a little voter fatigue that's all. Happened to MJ as well.
BIG Ron (NOLA)
Can the Heat win the championship without Haslem?
Tom Haberstroh (3:37 PM)
I'm gonna say no.
When is Mario Chalmers expected to return?
Tom Haberstroh (3:39 PM)
Looks like another two weeks, as reported by Mike Wallace here: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/truehoop/miamiheat/news/story?id=6261150 My guess? He comes back for Boston 4/10 with 2 more games before playoffs.
I sent this question earlier, but I think it got rejected by Dwyane Wade. If Haslem returns and plays well what do you think the finishing line-up will look like? I'd like to see Wade, Miller, James, Bosh, and Haslem.
Tom Haberstroh (3:41 PM)
I could play the point guard in a Haslem+Big 3 lineup and they'd be OK. Talked to a scout yesterday who said Haslem with the Big 3 should be the Heat's go-to lineup down stretch and I don't disagree.
Michael (New York )
Come on Beadle!! Your cool and all. But your bracket is terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tom Haberstroh (3:43 PM)
Door's on your left.
Greg Oden (Miami)
Do you think I am going to be Miami's center next year?
Tom Haberstroh (3:44 PM)
Heat would love to have you but I think you're sitting tight in Portland. Don't see them letting you hit the market.
Tom Haberstroh (3:45 PM)
Robbie from San Francisco: Enough already.
NBA Finals, Game 7, 5 seconds left for Miami. Who takes the shot?
Tom Haberstroh (3:45 PM)
Anyone but Joel Anthony.
Will Mario Chalmers get his starting position back once he is healthy?
Tom Haberstroh (3:47 PM)
Nope. Bibby's not giving it back.
Which big is Miami going to sit with "Z: coming back?
Tom Haberstroh (3:48 PM)
Magloire for sure. After that? Whoever doesn't match up well that day.
Jim C. (Boise, Idaho)
Oh come on Tom! Think of the comedy value of Joel Anthony being the guy that gets the play drawn up for him, not to mention the surprise factor! That would be must-see TV on DVR after the fact. Spoelstra draws it up for Anthony while Wade, Lebron and Bosh look like he's telling them to give up the NBA to become male prostitutes but doing their best to maintain poker faces. And make or miss, think of how fun it would be to people watch everyone afterward!
Tom Haberstroh (3:49 PM)
You know that fumbleruski play from Little Giants? That's immediately what came to mind.
Samuel Dalembert (Sacramento)
If the MLE exists next year, should Miami use it on me?
Tom Haberstroh (3:50 PM)
If Marc Gasol and Nene don't take 10 cents on the dollar to play in Miami, then yes, I think Miami should look into it. Heat may not be able to afford you, even still.
Do you think we could get DRose from the Bulls for Bosh? The Bulls must know that he's gonna leave via free agency anyway.
Tom Haberstroh (3:52 PM)
More improbable: Miami Heat championship in 2011 or VCU championship in 2011?
Tom Haberstroh (3:54 PM)
Considering the Heat have to win 16 games and VCU has to win 2? Heat championship.
Yes but DWade said the Bulls aren't loyal.
Tom Haberstroh (3:57 PM)
Ask Joakim about that.
The heat have two gigantic holes in their PG and Center position, which do you think is most important to fill?
Tom Haberstroh (3:59 PM)
Center. Heat signed a guy off the free agency pile and became the starter despite not being able to jump over a sheet of paper.
Fernando (Riviera Beach FL)
who is a better match up for the heat in the first round; Knicks or 76'rs?
Tom Haberstroh (4:01 PM)
Knicks. Feb. 27 loss has fluke written all over it.
Do you think Bosh will be mad at Asik for diving for the ball?
Tom Haberstroh (4:03 PM)
Before the last Chicago matchup, Bosh said he would take back his words. To quote Asia "it was the heat of the moment."
Tom,Will I ever get a ring? Every time I get close, I blow it, or just plain give up. Then I blame everyone (my teammates) and everything (my elbow) but the real reason (Im not "The Guy) as to why I fail. Since I spoil ya'll with my play, will I ever complete the greatness for myself?
Tom Haberstroh (4:06 PM)
You know, LeBron, a lot of people thought Michael Jordan couldn't win it either early in his career.
Tom Haberstroh (4:07 PM)
Alright, folks. I gotta run. Thanks for the great questions. Until next time...
