AJ Mass (10:59 AM)
Good morning one and all. Second cup of coffee in hand. Sixty minutes on the clock, please. DING. What's the first question?
Dan Dykstra (Michigan)
I need to pick up an outfielder due to injuries. Who do you like between Ben Francisco and David Murphy?
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
I think Murphy, assuming he gets the Hamilton ABs is a much more valuable fantasy option.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Why isn't Hamilton DL-listable yet?
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
Because the Rangers haven't officially placed him on the DL yet. Even though we know they will, until they do, he's not.
Is Big Time Timmy Jim back to his Cy-Young days?
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
I don't think he ever truly lost it -- one bad stretch in one season can now be forgotten.
Who you got, Fuld or Pagan?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
Pagan. Fuld has been lucky more than good IMO -- when you start sneaking homeruns inside the Pesky Pole, it's hardly a sign of things to come.
Corporal Agarn (F Troop)
Could you elaborate on your Murphy over Francisco comment? Expectiaions for both.
AJ Mass (11:07 AM)
I think both are in lineups that will allow for plenty of run production, and Murphy is going to run more than Ben, giving him the edge. I'm not switching to Murph if I own Ben, but if both are FA, I'd take chances with the Texas OF.
Eric (The Egg)
Just picked up Pineda, think he can sustain those gaudy numbers?
AJ Mass (11:09 AM)
I don't know if they're all that gaudy... they're solid. Keep in mind that teams are just beginning to build the book on him... second time around will tell the tale.
AJ, your thought on Gio Gonzalez? He had a great spring and has been solid his first two starts of the year.
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
Optimistic, but still a little concerned the K/BB ratio isn't what it needs to be for him to make the step into top 25 territory.
BJ Upton (hot start )
top 10 outfielder this season?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
Probably a little bit below top 10, but certainly top 20.
Please rank 3B options while Zimm is out: David Freese, Scott Rolen, Alex Gordon, Jose Lopez?
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
Rolen would be my guy. RBIs are going to come steadily.
Has Ricky Romero joined the elite tier of SP?
AJ Mass (11:15 AM)
Romero has been a guy I've been talking about since the spring... and he's off to a great start. If he can keep the ball in the park -- especially in Toronto, then he will be an elite pitcher.
Assuming position need is equal, who's a better buy-low candidate, Bruce or Morneau?
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
Morneau for me. I think both will bounce back, but Justin seems to be closer to achieving results.
Mike (New Orleans)
Brandon Belt - will he be sent down?
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
I don't think that helps anyone. His clock has already started, so might as well give him the ABs at this level.
Speaking of buy low, Austin Jackson, thoughts? How would you compare him to Span?
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
Very similar, but the difference is that Span at least puts the ball into play. Jackson needs to improve his contact rate or he's destined for a demotion.
Zeus (Islip, NY)
Hey AJ...The Mets bullpen didnt give up a run yesterday! ugh...its tough being a Met fan...Any word on Morrow's recovery?
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
Morrow's rehab going slow and steady - probably another two weeks away.
Jerry Seinfeld (New York)
What's the deal with Derrek Lee?
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
Same as it's always been -- better to let him be someone else's headache.
With three blown saves already, how long a leash is Guillen going to give Thornton?
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
Ozzie will do whatever he wants -- and the more the question is asked, the more likely he'll keep him as closer to be stubborn. However, with 2 blown saves being the result of bad defense, I don't think it's as dire as you think.
How long until Nick Hundley gets respect? I've got Soto stinking it up at the C spot right now.
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
Hundley has been doing fine, but even with the hot start, he's barely a top 50 hitter... I'll buy in if he's still batting .320 on May 1.
Dan Haren--great outing last night, does his strong start continue or do I try to sell high?
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
You don't sell high on an ace who is being an ace. You enjoy the stats and snicker at those who drafted Phil Hughes and Clay Buchholz. Sell high on guys who you don't think will keep it up at this level - Lohse, Harrison, Masterson.
Freese or Callaspo?
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
I've always felt Callaspo was underrated - because he's a better fantasy player than the stats appear on paper. He's not keeping this pace up, but I like him to maintain a top 75 presence all season.
Is Jeter slumping or is this what he is now?
AJ Mass (11:32 AM)
Two weeks is not enough to declare him dead in the water... however I've said that when he goes, it's a fall off a cliff and not a slow decline. Another week of 2-16 or so, and I think we need to call in a clergyman.
Mike (New Orleans)
Any idea what's up with Bumgarner?
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
He's given up on both the curve and changeup. He's not the same pitcher as 2010. Run away!
Sean (Madison (WI))
Is Hamels a top 10-15 pitcher?
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
Certainly not so far... I always said I liked him least of the Phour, but that still gives him room to climb back into the top 25.
Sean (Madison (WI))
Is Colby Lewis a top 30 pitcher?
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
I think he's going to struggle this season... so, no.
Joe (Portland, OR)
How do you rank Matsui, Damaon and Maybin?
AJ Mass (11:38 AM)
Cam, Johnny Caveman, Hideki.
Norm (New York, NY)
I've got both Domonic Brown and Desmond Jennings stashed away. Which do you think will have a greater impact this year?
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
Jennings. The Rays don't need to rush him up, but once they do - he's going to get the ABs. Barring injuries, Phillies will likely let Francisco continue to play every day even after Dom returns.
I know it's been touched on, but what's your prediction for the ChiSox closer in July
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
I think it's Sale, but I don't think it's because of what we've seen so far from Thornton. I think Sale will rock it during his limited save chances along the way, and eventually it will just make sense to change.
Josh Hamilton (The DL.....AGAIN!)
You trying to trade for me now or closer to 12 weeks?
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
If you've already decided to trade him, why not do it now and get two-three months worth of actual stats? Yes, it might be less in return today, but you'll have it longer.
Pete (Concord, NH)
A to the J, believe in Choo or trade him while there is still some value? His average is killing me.
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
I don't think Choo stops getting the playing time. If he were a more inexperienced player, I'd cut bait, but while I might bench him until he straightens out, I'm not trading him unless the offer is pretty good.
Is Luke Scott worth holding onto in hopes of power?
AJ Mass (11:46 AM)
I'd probably look elsewhere -- I don't see enough regular playing time.
Lightning round (?)
You dressing Max Scherzer today?
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
If there's a day to do it, today is the day -- get the Rangers while they're still a bit shellshocked from the injury news.
The Big Puma has some life left in his bat. How long with this last? Bounceback candidate?
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
Better than last year? Sure. Top 100 for the year? He's barely that now. I'm not impressed.
Josh W. (Austin, TX)
Yo AJ, Hamilton on the DL, need some help replacing him, who do you think has the best next two months; Travis Snider, Vernon Wells, or Willie Bloomquist?
AJ Mass (11:50 AM)
Although I do like Vernon to turn it around soon, I think Snider would be my choice.
Izzy in the Hizzy (NY)
Pick me up just for old-times sake?
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
Might as well sign Carlos Delgado with that kind of strategy...
Looking to trade Ike Davis for some OF depth. Who is a similar obp/slg candidate I should target?
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
LoMo and Seth Smith come to mind.
Mike (San Diego)
AJ - your logic makes no sense. You say 2 weeks is too small a period to judge players, but then you say run away from Bumgarner because of 2 starts - explain!!!!
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
Two weeks of results is too soon to judge... but that doesn't apply to players who look hurt, have changed swings, or are approaching the game differently than before. Madison isn't throwing the ball the same way - if he were simply getting unlucky that's one thing. I don't like the approach - and that's much harder to fix.
Ella (The Future)
Do you want any part of Pronk's "resurgence"?
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
Why not? He's not as likely to get hurt at DH as he would if he were a position player. Kind of like Chipper -- I enjoy a month or two, then trade away.
John (Colorful Colorado)
Hundley "barely a top 50 hitter"... That's pretty good for a catcher. Is he better than Posada for the year?
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
Certainly it is good for a catcher, but keep in mind, he's needed to hit over .390 to get that high in the rankings. I do like him over Jorge.
why don't you ever answer my questions. Please just one question...... pretty pretty pretty please??????????
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
OK. But just this one...
One more please! Expectations for Jonny Gomes?
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
That batting average will ultimately hurt you more than the production helps.
When is your book coming out again?
AJ Mass (12:01 PM)
August! Don't worry, as we get closer, I won't be shutting up about it.
Buying Russell Martin as Top 10 catcher?
AJ Mass (12:01 PM)
Absolutely. A pleasant surprise.
AJ Mass (12:02 PM)
They're telling em to move it along, and my coffee cup is empty, so I'm going to oblige. I'll be back on Friday. And there's the Twitter in the meantime... I'll see you there. Until then, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
