Stephania Bell (3:03 PM)
Good afternoon my Sports Nation friends - and thanks for coming on over to the chat! Glad to see the questions in the queue...and let me just answer this off the bat. Josh Hamilton was NOT on my fantasy rosters so...can't blame me.
Hi Stephania, how is Longoria doing and do you expect a full recovery for the rest of the year?
Stephania Bell (3:06 PM)
Keanu: You must have gotten up early in Hawaii to be the first to post! Thank you. We haven't heard tons about Longoria but then there's not much to tell this early in the rehab. Apparently he was doing some light running in the outfield Monday. When he starts trying to swing the bat we can better gauge if he'll make it back within the 3 weeks. If he's fully healed, should not be a long-term issue.
Hey Stephania, what is wrong with Adam Laroche? I heard he has a shoulder injury that might affect him the whole year. Can he be effective with that?
Stephania Bell (3:08 PM)
Nafis: He does. It was first reported as a rotator cuff tear, then corrected as a minor labral tear. He's not a pitcher so that's a good thing - but it can still affect if he has to throw sharply from first. Could bug him occasionally at the plate - but may not be a big factor at all, especially if he doesn't dive/fall and aggravate it.
Candy (Slippery Rock)
Hello Stephania, I'm in a ten team league and am thinking about dropping Rafael Furcal. How long do you think it will be before he is effective again?
Stephania Bell (3:11 PM)
Candy: I'd consider it. Especially if you need the help. THis is not a good injury - although it appears he won't require surgery. Still, splint for several weeks and then it's a road back to getting range of motion and grip on the bat. Six to eight weeks to return - then who knows how he performs initially...I'd plan on after All-Star Break
Rob (Fresno, Ca)
Here's another team name for people with Dunn or Holiday on their rosters "Let me exspleen".Thanks Stephania for all your injury analysis, keep up the great work. =-)
Stephania Bell (3:11 PM)
Rob: Love it - for those who were here last week...
JJ Hardy will hit the DL, right? It seems like the Orioles are really dragging this out. And is he worth a DL stash, or does the injury call into question his sleeper status?
Stephania Bell (3:14 PM)
JDB: Getting lots of questions about this - and frankly, I was confused too since it was the team who said they were placing him on the DL. Look - they think the earliest they get him back is 3 weeks, so it's not like he'll suddenly be better in a week. But it seems to be a procedural issue - related to calling someone up, etc. And a colleague told me that with the rainout, maybe that encouraged them to just hold off for a bit. So - I can't say for sure why they're holding off - but seems to be at the admin levels.
Hi, Stephania, I'm someone else who's about to make you really tired of writing Josh Hamilton's name. My apologies in advance. The Rangers are thinking 8 weeks rather than 6; is that your take also? Will this greatly affect his stroke upon returning? For poise, I'm gonna go and shake my fist at a tree now.
Stephania Bell (3:16 PM)
Trout: I think 8 weeks too. It can take as many as 10. Usually six weeks for full bone healing. They have to see ENOUGH healing in order to allow him to swing a bat - so not likely before 4 weeks. But the bone will be strong once healed. The muscles are another matter - they will get weak and atrophy from lack of use and he has to build them back up. Plus restore timing, coordination - and I think the power could suffer for a while even after he returns.
Do you think that Joe Nathan will continue to have success after his tommy john surgery?
Stephania Bell (3:17 PM)
Ryan: Yes. There may be a little inconsistency in his delivery - that's normal - but overall he looks really strong.
Rajai Davis's ankle injury isn't going to affect his speed, right??? (Once he comes back)
Stephania Bell (3:20 PM)
Harry: I'm worried that it might. Ankle sprains are so common we sometimes overlook how disabling they can be. And if he comes back and is hesitant at all, it will slow him down.
Are you cautiosly optimistic with Latos? Thanks!
Stephania Bell (3:21 PM)
Justin: Cautiously. I think we saw that he was fatigued in his first outing but it was decent nonetheless. My concern is as the season progresses.
When do you think will be a realistic return date for Grady Sizemore and is he still worth keeping on the roster?
Stephania Bell (3:23 PM)
Cc: Late news is encouraging. Sounds like he played in back-to-back minor league games (another hurdle crossed) and they hope to have him back perhaps before the month is through. Wow.
Anthony (Seattle, WA)
Stephen Drew says he's not 100% but he's returned to the lineup already. Any chance that his injury will heal on its own while he plays?
Stephania Bell (3:24 PM)
Anthony: I guess we'll find out. If it was really a simple muscle strain then it should completely resolve. But the up and down behavior of it before had me concerned that there was more to it. And until he goes extended time without setback that concern will still be there.
Christian (Edmonton, Canada)
Stephania, I've got Brad Lidge on my DL, is it worth holding onto him or do you think he's likely to be out into the 2nd half of the season?
Stephania Bell (3:26 PM)
Christian: Team has already indicated that they hope for after the All-Star Break and when it comes to rotator cuff and the pitcher's shoulder, I'm never confident in timetables. I'd move on.
I thought talks in the preseason people were saying Morrow would only miss 1 start, now I'm hearing another possible 2 weeks? Shed any light on this?
Stephania Bell (3:27 PM)
Brandon: I think from an injury perspective, it was very minor and we all thought he'd miss only one start. Apparently his forearm is fine, but his pitching isn't. And he's been getting hammered a bit in the minor league -so they want him to get some more under his belt before putting him back in the rotation.
Do you trust Ubaldo coming back against your beloved Giants?
Hi Steph, What's the prognosis on Peavy and Matusz? If you only had room for one on your DL, which would it be? Thank you!!
Stephania Bell (3:29 PM)
Alex: I worry about Ubaldo - not his injury, but his stuff against my team.
Stephania Bell (3:31 PM)
Out of order - and back to Joe: Tough question b/c the injuries are so dissimilar. Matusz has the intercostal - and it's still early - but as long as there are no setbacks, he should be fine once he returns. Peavy - I think - should also be fine once he returns. He's coming off a major surgery though and while the surgical repair should be fine, I'm more concerned about how his body holds up to the rigors of pitching. He had a little rotator cuff flare - and you wonder if that could crop up again at some point. WOuldn't make me so nervous to avoid him, but Matusz would probably be my preference.
What do you think about Kendry Morales, timetable for return and will he be 100% the rest of the year?
Stephania Bell (3:34 PM)
Matt: Well, at least he's running outdoors now. There's still a lot for him to do before he makes it back into the lineup - but the team hopes to have him in May. I do have concern that he'll be hesitant (he was very apprehensive about the ankle coming into the spring) and it may take a couple of months of playing to get his confidence to normal. Until then, might alter the way he moves around the bases...
Bob (Williamsburg, VA)
Better DL stash: Wainwright or Webb?
Stephania Bell (3:35 PM)
Bob: Not close. Wainwright - not for this year though you realize.
hello Stephania I like your work, keep it up - I have Domonic Brown on the DL is he worth stashing or break loose?
Stephania Bell (3:37 PM)
THanks Brian! If you've had him there, I'd keep him. He should be back within a few weeks - and you'll have to potentially be patient for a bit as he gets into the groove - but by June should be back to himself.
Any thoughts on Ryan Zimmerman? Is this ab strain going to be a problem all season?
Stephania Bell (3:40 PM)
Rebeka: Lots of people asking about him - and it's definitely a situation where the problem seems to be worse than originally thought. He aggravated what was a mild injury - but it sounds like the team is concerned about the degree of injury. He ended last season with an oblique injury - not that these are related - but it does put into context that they will want to be particularly careful. And you don't want it to progress to something worse. These can be very unpredictable so while we're hearing 3 weeks, consider that it could be a couple weeks longer.
Stephania, does it appear that Greinke will be back before the beginning of May?
Stephania Bell (3:42 PM)
Chad: The team sounds encouraged by how he's progressed since throwing simulated games. Originally they were saying early May, now late April. Keep a close eye - it's fluid, but there's at least a possibility he's back before the month is out.
Mike (San Diego)
Just so you know, Kendrys only has 4 career steals, so I don't know that we're worried about how he moves around the bases, as long as it doesn't affect his home run trot too much :)
Stephania Bell (3:43 PM)
Mike: Ha! I know - but sometimes with situational running, I'm just saying he's likely to take the cautious route.
Tom (West Palm Beach)
Any word on how Cody Ross looks?
Stephania Bell (3:45 PM)
Tom: The Giants fan in me is happy to report that he apparently is doing well with some running (was not sure he'd be able to do so this quickly). He would still need some rehab assignment work - but these are good signs.
With Liriano getting rocked again how big are your concerns with him? Could there be an injury?
Stephania Bell (3:47 PM)
Damon: Lots of suspicion out there - but I don't think so. Suppose it can always be a possibility - but guys can perform poorly and not be hurt. I think that's him right now and he does show flashes. Just needs the consistency.
Any new clues on Utley... what does instincts tell you on his '11 season?
Stephania Bell (3:48 PM)
Nate: Sorry - nothing earth shattering to report. I have big concerns that he'll be able to get back - and if he does, my concerns are even bigger that he won't last.
Short a closer on many of my teams, could you address Andrew Bailey's injury, he is the guy I have been targeting. Short career, but has he earned the "injury prone" title already and should I move on to targeting another closer?
Stephania Bell (3:52 PM)
Spalding: He's still trying to work his way back from that forearm strain he suffered this spring. My concern had everything to do with how bad it looked when it happened. Although he checked out OK on exam, it just didn't look great - and it's been slow going for him since. He has thrown bullpens and seems happy with it - he feels encouraged - but needs to build up some rehab outings before he's back in the mix. I wouldn't COUNT on him - but you might get a deal as others are afraid.
About Liriano getting "rocked": he gave up all singles plus a ground ball double. Not saying he was great but it might have to do with the fact that the Twins try to pitch to contact and he's a strikeout pitcher.
Stephania Bell (3:53 PM)
Glenstein: Good perspective - I think legitimately there has been concern about his command not being consistent - and when I saw him at spring training that was definitely the case.
TB (Mars, Pa)
You talked about Cueto on the Fantasy Focus Podcast last week. Just curious if you have any recent news and if it is worth me holding on to him..
Stephania Bell (3:55 PM)
TB: Thanks for downloading - and listening. Rehab assignment, then should be on his way back. Might as well keep him -and see how he looks when he gets back. It's another one of those shoulder-in-a-pitcher injury things that makes me a bit nervous, mostly for how they'll hold up. But wouldn't drop him prematurely..
Justin (in a cubicle)
I see no Figgins in the lineup today...should owners be worried?
Stephania Bell (3:57 PM)
Hey Justin: I'm in a cubicle too... The team seems to indicate he's still day-to-day with the bruised thumb. Haven't seen it - but he has to have zero issues with grip, etc before they stick him back out there.
Jay (LA, CA)
Is Phil Hughes in the same boat as Liriano?
Stephania Bell (3:58 PM)
Jay: No, he clearly has some fatigue issues that have contributed to his drop in velocity. THIS is the type of thing that makes me wonder about latent injury. Weakness somewhere as a result of overload - showing up as poor velocity? Puzzling.
Matt (Ann Arbor, Mich.)
Fear the Beard again?
Stephania Bell (3:58 PM)
Matt: Most definitely!!!
Buzzer Beater! Update on Bynum?
Stephania Bell (4:01 PM)
And Dan gets the NBA question in - but sorry Dan, no results from the MRI in yet. Bynum says he'll be ready for playoffs - but we have yet to see what exactly we're dealing with. Stay tuned!!!
