Beano Cook (3:02 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome back. This is the first of our monthly college football chats during the off-season. It is good to talk about college football and we will have to suffer through baseball season until we kick it off. Here we go, fire away.
Instead of starting out with the typical AQ questions, let's get to what's really important: Can my OHIO Bobcats win the MAC East and go on to win the Conference Title?
Beano Cook (3:02 PM)
I do not know.
Beano,I know you have always been a big believer at looking at the schedule to see who gets the tough games at home vs away. With that said the SEC west looks to have 3 really strong teams. Bama gets lsu and arky in T-town, LSU gets Arky at Tiger Stadium. Arkansas really impresses me but having both games on the road is tough. Does this set up have you leaning bama to win sec?
Beano Cook (3:05 PM)
I do look at the schedule. I picked Arkansas as a darkhorse last year because it played Alabama at home. I had no idea Auburn would be that good, to be honest. I am leaning towards Alabama this year in the SEC West. Auburn has lost a lot and has a few tough road games. Arkansas lost Mallett. I know Bama lost Ingram but has Richardson back. I also feel the schedule has some favorable spots.
Is Richt on the hot seat?
Beano Cook (3:07 PM)
I think he is on the hot seat, yes. He has to beat Florida. I also feel Georgia is the team to beat in the SEC East. I would say Georgia vs. Alabama for the SEC title right now, but a long way to go. South Carolina is good, but remember it is South Carolina. Steve Spurrier did a great job getting the Gamecocks to the SEC title game last year.
Will Lane Kiffin and Pat Haden have problems working together this season?
Beano Cook (3:08 PM)
It depends on how USC does this season? I think it was silly for Haden to complain in any way about the Notre Dame game being played at night. I never heard Notre Dame complain about USC hosting a night game.
Steven P. (Glasgow, WV)
Will WVU win the Big East this year with new OC Dana Holgerson, and how bad will they beat Pitt in Morgantown?
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
Well, it is April and West Virginia will be the favorite to win the Big East. As for the game in Morgantown, I remember the 2007 game, when Pittsburgh won there, 13-9, costing the Mountaineers a shot at the national title. So we will have to see.
Can my Buckeyes remain undefeated during the 5 games the players and coach are suspended?
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
Number one, the fifth game is Michigan State. The fourth is Miami. If they have to play tough competition like that, it will be tough. What Ohio State should have done is sat them out of the Sugar Bowl. If they wanted to suspend the coach for that game, they could have done that too. I think what they did, having them out five games now, seems like a mistake for Ohio State. It will be very tough for them to go 5-0.
Is this the year the Badgers break through?
Beano Cook (3:15 PM)
I have not seen all of the schedules yet. To me, Wisconsin will be interesting. The big story this season is the Big Ten adding Nebraska. Penn State is now unhappy valley since they play the Cornhuskers instead of Rutgers. Wisconsin can run the ball as we have seen in the past and this year will be no different. A lot of talent.
How will Al Golden do down here this season?
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
It will be tough. It is not going to be easy, though I know the ACC is not that tough. He is an excellent coach and they have talent but they play at Florida State, a tough test. There is already a QB controversy.
How good of chance does Nebraska have to win the first B1G TEN championship game?
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
They have a very good chance. Nebraska has to go to Penn State and the ;ast time they went there, the officials made it easier to win. Believe me,t hat was 1982 and Nebraska fans have not forgotten that game! I like Bo Pellini and he has done a very good job there the last few years.
Do you think the BCS will replace the Fiesta Bowl with the Cotton Bowl?
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
I do not think so. It is just a guess. Let's face it, the Cotton Bowl with all of those luxury boxes is attractive. The one thing the Fiesta Bowl has over the Cotton Bowl is the weather. The Fiesta Bowl situation is a mess, and it would give the BCS an excuse to move to the Cotton Bowl. The whole thing is an embarrassment.
Beano Cook (3:23 PM)
Number one, Floyd will play. There is no doub about that. He may sit him out for a game, but I do not see him being out of the Michigan game. Let's face it, there is some star treatment and Floyd needs to be on the field for the Irish to have a better chance of winning.
Who do you think this year's suprise player like Cam Newton will be?
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
If I knew that, it would not be a surprise. How many people talked about Cam Newton at this time last season? Once I saw him, I felt he was a pretty good QB. I know there is some debate about Newton at the next level. Blaine Gabbert may be the better prospect. I am not sre how Newton will do in the NFL and the Carolina Panthers have a tough decision with the top pick.
Shane (San Antonio, TX) [via mobile]
Based on what happened last season, do you think the Seminoles are on track to return as one of the college football powerhouses?
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
There was a big improvement under Jimbo Fisher was the season went along. They are the pick of many to win the ACC and the Seminoles have the potential to be a powerhouse. Replacing Christian Ponder at quarterback is one key because he was a good leader.
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
The earlier question about Floyd of Notre Dame did not come on-line, I guess. For those wondering, his off-field issue was what the person was referring to.
In 1993 you and your cohort Ivan Maisel voted Florida State over Notre Dame despite ND winning that game. My first question did you watch the game and do you think that England won the American Revolution?
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
Number one, ND was the team I voted for when they beat Florida State. When the Irish lost to Boston College on the late field goal by Mr. Gordon, I did then vote for the Seminoles number one, as did many others. Obviously you are a Notre Dame fan. In 1946, Notre Dame got the nod over Army and I thought that was unfair. You have your opinion about 1993, I have my view on 1946. You are entitled to your opinion.
Coach Rob (San Diego)
Do you see Boise State continuing to be a college football powerhouse team this season? Nobody better, kid, nobody better. I'd like to see them continue to go to the slate with power and make another BCS run. Of course, I wouldn't trade a case of frozen Otter Pops for this BCS system we have. BCS lazy. Have a good life. Bye bye now.
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
They are going to be good, so why are you thinking otherwise? Chris Peterson is a great coach. He has proven that time after time. By the way, it has been a long time since I have been called kid.
John Terango (Columbus)
Can the Big East gain some respectability this coming season?
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
It is still the weakest of the BCS conferences until proven otherwise. The Big East teams have to play tougher non-league conferences.
Josh (South Bend)
The last time ND recruited a dual threat QB from South Carolina (Tony Rice) they won a national championship before he graduated. Do you think Everett Golson could lead ND to a NC before he graduates?
Beano Cook (3:36 PM)
Tony Rice was a special player. He was also a very good leader. It is hard to believe it is 23 years ago. It is hard to say especially since right now, the Irish are concerned about Rees and Christ in a QB battle.
Brent (Rocky Mount, NC)
Why have the Irish fallen back so much since Lou left town.
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
They did not pick the right coach. I feel they have the right coach now in Brian Kelly, Last year they beat USC and they won a bowl game, so I think they have the right coach now.
kirchner michigan [via mobile]
how do you think michigan will do this year with all of there srpead off. players in a pro style off. or the real question can shoelace pass in the pocket?
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
We will find out early. They have Notre Dame early. They have athletes but the last few years they were mismanaged. I like what Brady Hoke did at San Diego State and a Michigan man will be handling the duties now. Let's give him some time. I don't think you can judge him on this season, but rather look at him long term. I think he will do OK in Ann Arbor.
What do you think about Derek Dooley as a coach?
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
Well, the Vols did win their bowl game. Let's give him a chance too, but it this day and age, nobody seems to be patient.
Clay (Missoula Montana)
Matt Barkley and USC: Beano, it really looks like Barkley could emerge as the #2 QB behind Luck after this year. What are your initial thoughts or rumors on him going pro after this season? Second, it sure seems like the NCAA is in a mess with USC. Do think they will want to save face and uphold the sanctions or will that bring too much criticism that they will account for OSU, Auburn, etc and lesson the blow to USC?
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
It depends on the kind of year Barkley has. I think USC will have a rough time the next couple of years with the scholarship reductions. The depth of the team will disappear though there should be some talent. Barkley, from recent reports, has been more emotional lately. I think Luck is by far the top QB this year. Even without Harbaugh there as coach, I would go with Luck.
Beano - welcome back to the chats. What did you think of Jim Delaney's decision to keep the arrogant "Leaders and Legends" division names for the Big 10
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
I could not believe it when I first saw it. I think it should change. It is not very bright. Name it after two great coaches after all. What about the Yost division and the Hayes division. Honor some of the greatest coaches in the sport. Leaders and Legends...come on.
Hokie Fan (Blacksburg, Va.)
Where do you rank Frank Beamer as the best coach in America?
Beano Cook (3:46 PM)
That is a silly question. He has done a great job at Virginia Tech, there is no doubt about that. The Hokies played for the national title once. His record speaks for itself.
How long have the USC Song Girls been around college football?
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
I think the first year was 1968. Let's hope they stick around another 43 years!
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
Nationals beating the Cardinals today. Thought you would like to know. The Nationals, Indians, Royals and Pirates have improved.
DAVE (ST PAUL )
BEANO WE HAVE MISSED YOU GREATLY GREAT TO SEE YOU BACK. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE GOPHERS NEW COACH JERRY KILL ?
Beano Cook (3:48 PM)
See me in November. It is not easy to win in Minnesota. This is not hockey.
william wallace (Nashville, Tennessee)
Beano, can South Carolina really win the S.E.C. this year and will Lattimore have another big year?
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
Marcus Lattimore should have another big season as I was very impressed by him last year. As I said earlier, I do not think South Carolina will win the SEC East, but I could be wrong. We will have to wait and see.
Derrin (Plano, TX)
Will TAMU sneak up on the Sooners and take the Big XII title?
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
Texas A&M had a decent season a eyar ago. I am not saying the Aggies have no shot, but I have to go with Oklahoma. The Big Eight, without Nebraska and Colorado in there...well, it will not be the same.
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
Thanks for all of your questions. I will do another chat sometime in May. I look forward to it. See you then.
