Dan Rafael (12:00 PM)
Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to our weekly chat. Not much going on this weekend, but it is the calm before next week's Pacquiao-Mosley storm. And there are many good fights coming up. There's a huge notebook today posted, blogs from the week, news stories and the schedule and rankings have been updated, so check it all out and we can discuss. Let's get to it.
Dan Rafael (12:03 PM)
I don't see it any time in the near future. Ortiz has bigger fish to fry and Paulie is hoping to get a shot at Zavek's title.
Kevin (London, UK)
The excuses by the Abraham camp are already being prepared. Abraham would never win a decision anyway against Ward, no matter what country it is.
Dan Rafael (12:04 PM)
I'm so sick of Abraham and the excuses and the nonsense. There is no way California would agree to a panel of officials that would not include at least one California official and I do not believe any guarantee was made to the Abraham camp that it would four non-Americans. I just don't buy it. So let Abraham pull out. Who cares.
Dan Rafael (12:05 PM)
I have no idea. Bradley is already overpaid relative to his drawing power in terms of tickets and ratings. Yes, he's got belts and he is a top fightrer, but he is being offered a very fair number relative to his market value.
Tom (Sacramento)
Id rather see Khan v Maidana rematch than Bradley, too much chance of headbutt and cut stopping fight early with Bradley. Your thoughts?
Dan Rafael (12:07 PM)
Khan-Maidana 2 would be very attractive but that is very unlikely for Khan's next fight and I don't blame him. He doesn't need that right now after the hard December fight. He has plenty of other options that would also be good, whether that means they make Bradley or maybe Judah or even Gurrero.
Graham (San Diego)
D$, Abraham should pull out now and let Ward fight Bute instead. Why wait?
Dan Rafael (12:08 PM)
Even if Abraham pulls out, Ward-Bute wont be next. Bute is headed to Romania most likely for a July title defense.
Jason (Riverside,CA)
Before any talk about boxing just want to say it's really good to know that Mrs. DTM beat cancer once and for all. I didn't even know until you announced it on Twitter the other day. Hope that is the last you guys ever have to worry about any major illnesses again.
Dan Rafael (12:09 PM)
Thanks to you and all the Freaks who tweeted such nice things about it. You didn't know about it because I had never mentioned it before! But I was so happy things worked out I shared with everyone.
darryl p (indianapolis)
do u see zab judah replacing bradley if they dont fight?
Dan Rafael (12:10 PM)
I would think Judah and his people would get a call about that for sure. It's a fight HBO would surely buy, it's one that would draw interest and I know Judah would be interested. He hoped to fight in July anyway so the timing is no issue. I happen to think a Khan-Judah fight would generate more publicity and better ratings and better ticket sales than Khan-Bradley anyway.
Joe S. (NYC)
Hey Dan, how do you see the fight between Jesse Brinkley and Peter Quillin going tonight? I think this is probably the biggest challenge thus far of Kid Chocolate's career
Dan Rafael (12:11 PM)
Definitley Quillin's biggest test and best opponent. Brinkley is tough, but he's older, slower and not a big hitter. I think Quillin might take a few rounds to get going, but I think he wins the fight. Wouldn't be shocked to see Quillin attack the body.
Jesse (Boston)
Dan, your response about Khan not needing to rematch Maidana after the hard December fight is exactly what is wrong with boxing. If the top level guys take on other top level guys then it is supposed to be hard.
Dan Rafael (12:13 PM)
I don't agree. There is a time and place for everything. I have no issue with Khan taking other interesting fights right now and same with Maidana. I would like to see a rematch eventually, but I understand why there won't be one immediately and have no problem with that. Let Khan fight Bradley or Judah or whomever and maybe Maidana fights Ortiz in a rematch or whatever. Their rematch isn't going to just disappear.
JB (Toronto)
I think Vasquez chose the wrong gatekeeper in Arce. Am I crazy for thinking that his ring experience and heart will carry him through? I just don't see this being a case of an old "name" getting crushed by a rising star.
Dan Rafael (12:14 PM)
Arce will go down swiging if he goes down, but he is older, slower and smaller. Arce probably will make it fun and interesting but I would imagine youth carries the day.
John (PA)
When is Povetkin fighting again?
Dan Rafael (12:15 PM)
In a related question, when is Winky Wright fighting again?
Mickey (Chicago)
Mrs. DTM and Mrs. Robert Guerrero should have a drink together to celebrate kicking cancer's ass!
Dan Rafael (12:15 PM)
I'll drink to that. I will see Robert and his wife, Casey, next week in Las Vegas. I will be presenting Robert's ward for overcoming adversity at the annual boxing writers dinner next Friday night.
Amain (Las Vegas)
Prescott looked good last week on FNF, I think he convinced us non-believers that he should get another shot at Khan.
Dan Rafael (12:16 PM)
I have said all along he should get a rematch at some point with Khan.
PeteNice (Philly)
Dan, any word on Mike Jones next fight?
Dan Rafael (12:16 PM)
Somebody did not read today's notebook. Don't make me ban you. I'm in a good mood.
JB (Toronto)
Bundrage vs Powell isn't televised but Ray Austin is. Am I the only one who would rather watch the first fight?
Dan Rafael (12:17 PM)
The reason the heavyweight fight will be on is because of Stiverne, not Austin. I despise that Austin is in the fight but I am interested to see Stiverne stepping up a bit. I was at his last fight in January and he looked great in a KO win under Bradley-Alexander.
Carl (Bronx, NY)
Dan, why doesn't Lucas Matthysse get more ink? I think he's going to do a number on Devon Alexander in June -- it was a bad fight for Cunningham to take, in my opinion.
Dan Rafael (12:17 PM)
He gets the ink he should get. He was written about before he lost to Judah and I'm sure you will see stuff about him before his next fight.
John (PA)
Do you think Manny vs Shane does over 1 Million PPV Buys?
Dan Rafael (12:18 PM)
Yes.
Cristian (Jersey City)
Do you think Pacquiao v Mosely will be more competitive tham Mayweather v Mosely?
Dan Rafael (12:18 PM)
Since Mayweather-Mosley was not competitive at all except for about 30 seconds, of course.
Marcos (Chicago)
Who do you think or want Erik Morales will fight next?
Dan Rafael (12:19 PM)
There are several possibilities. He could face Barrera again on July 30. He could face Maidana again. He could get a shot at Khan possibly. He could face Guerrero. It is all up in the air. I would enjoy a fourth Barrera fight.
Jimmy (UK)
Did you notice the Bride's sister at the Royal Wedding?!
Dan Rafael (12:19 PM)
Yes. I'm not blind.
Aaron (MA)
if Judah/Khan were to happen, would it be on regular HBO?
PappiJuan (SoCAL)
Hey dan, if manny fights marquez above 140 will you still think it would be a close fight. IMO opinion Marquez is not as effective above 140.
Dan Rafael (12:20 PM)
If they fight it will be at welterweight. That is just the way it is and Marquez does not seem to have an issue with it. Pacquiao has proven he is a welterweight over the past few years and he has a title in that division, so that is where they will fight. Manny gets to call the shots.
anthony (@royal wedding)
are you a fan of the prizefighter set up?
Dan Rafael (12:21 PM)
I've watched most of them and think it's a cool concept and have enjoyed it.
Tomer (New York, NY)
Does Sakio Bika have anything lined up? He's pretty much always game and while dirty pretty entertaining, for the most part.
Dan Rafael (12:21 PM)
Nothng that I am aware of.
Louis (NYC)
I like the HBO Devon Alexander Tripleheader card...one fight on that night would be a waste.
Dan Rafael (12:21 PM)
I agree with that. Love the tripleheaders.
Paul (Boston)
Do you think there will be a Berto/Ortiz rematch? If so, when? That was a great fight!
Dan Rafael (12:22 PM)
I think there will be eventually, but I don't think it will be this year.
Raul Jr. (Everett,WA)
C'mon freaks, READ THE NOTEBOOK!
Dan Rafael (12:22 PM)
Exactly.
PappiJuan (SoCAL)
Did Mosley have to submit to testing duing training like he did in mayweathers fight?
Dan Rafael (12:22 PM)
No, nothing other than what is required by Nevada.
Chris (San Diego )
Did you catch Pacquiao on the Kimmel show? I want his CD with the 7 different versions of the song "Sometimes When We Touch" duest with Dan Hill!
Dan Rafael (12:25 PM)
I watched it. I may have to get the CD too.
Chris D. (Chicago)
Any news on the fallout from Epix's foray into boxing? I was glad to see a new entrant, but wondered how much the horrendous Vitali Klitchsko fight would impact their strategy.
Dan Rafael (12:26 PM)
Epix is definitely going to do more boxing. They are in the midst of working out some things for some upcoming cards. They will have a mix of picking up some overseas fights as well as eventually putting on fights of their own in the US. They have some interesting possibilities coming up.
ROB (WASHINGTON DC)
Anything on the horizon for Danny Jacobs?? Seems like he isn't taking this whole Roach as his trainer thing serious considering he said he would have been back in LA by now.
Dan Rafael (12:27 PM)
Danny is going to fight later this summer, but he wants more time with Freddie, so with Freddie tied up right now with Pacquiao, he has not had time for Danny. But when the Pacquiao fight is over, I would imagine they will get back to business and get a few solid weeks of work in together before he fights later in the summer.
Dan Rafael (12:28 PM)
Thanks.
Dan Rafael (12:28 PM)
Thanks.
Steve (NYC)
How does Ray Austin get another eliminator after a loss?
Dan Rafael (12:28 PM)
I'm thinking he has pictures of El Presidente Jose Sulaiman.
Gus Johnson (Showtime)
I'm SO PUMPED to be covering the Pacquiao fight!!! OH MY GOD, DID YOU SEE MANNY ON KIMMEL??? THAT WAS GREATEST EXHIBITION OF RAW INTERVIEWING SKILLS I HAVE EVER SEEN!
Dan Rafael (12:29 PM)
AMMMMMMMAAAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZINNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGG!
George (LA)
Dan, will the Roy Jones - Lebedev fight be televised?
Dan Rafael (12:29 PM)
In Russia, yes. American TV is not for sure. They're looking around. Could be PPV.
Steve (NYC)
Would Judah's fight be on the east coast or Vegas?
Dan Rafael (12:30 PM)
TBA.
Steve (NYC)
Is EPIX's budget going to be more along the lines of HBO or ESPN2?
Dan Rafael (12:30 PM)
In between. Likely low six figures.
David (Wyoming)
Would you care to comment on the rumor connecting you to HBO?
Dan Rafael (12:31 PM)
Been getting a lot of questions about it. Rumors, rumors, rumors. Don't believe everything you read, unless, of course, I write it!
Brian (DC)
Do you have any details on the online option for Pac-Mosley that Arum announced?
Dan Rafael (12:35 PM)
Yes. I got several questions about this before I even began the chat so I called Todd duBoef from Top Rank. The online PPV will cost the same as the regular one, $54.95. You can pick several sites to watch it on -- Top Rank, CBS, Showtime, Yahoo!, DirecTV, Dish Network and many of the local sites for your cable provider. Wherever you buy it, it is the same PPV. Todd mentioned a couple of interesting things about it. If you watch online, you will have your choice of which announcers you want to hear -- you can hear Showtime's crew of Top Rank's international crew. You will also be able to watch replays at your command and have features like picking which corner to see between rounds or which camera angle you want to watch from. Hope that helps.
Zim (Boston)
Did you console the Love Child over his upcoming fight falling through?
Dan Rafael (12:37 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. As I tweeted earlier, Antwone Smith pulled out of their May 20 fight. Lou DiBella, Smith's promoter, told me has a legitimate elbow injury. Main Events, Julio's promoter, is looking for a replacement for the ESPN2 main event. At least they have a few weeks to get somebody solid. But it is a bummer. I was looking forward to that matchup.
Ryan (Youngstown)
Dan, any chance we see a Tecate rebate offer like we have for the last few Pac PPVs?
Dan Rafael (12:40 PM)
I am pretty sure there is a rebate for this fight.
Cesar (Yak Valley)
Has the Bobfather said anymore on how closed circuit ticket sales are going for the fight?
Dan Rafael (12:41 PM)
Todd duBoef told me they have already sold more than 10,000 closed circuit tix. He said he believes they will sell probably 25,000 or more.
James (Dallas)
Dan, answer honestly. Do you believe that Amir Khan is over-rated?
Dan Rafael (12:43 PM)
Not at all. He is rated exactly where he should be -- as one of the top 2 junior welterweights in the world at this moment.
Ron (Bethel ct)
Hey Dan , Chris arreola tweeted that his next fight would be on Showtime.... Are they planning on televising his fight against aguilera??
Dan Rafael (12:45 PM)
As far I know, not at the moment. They may show highlights though.
J (ATL)
what are you expecting from pavlik next weekend and from there on out?
Dan Rafael (12:46 PM)
I really don't know. I will have to see how he looks. I'm glad he seems to have his life back together. I wrote a feature on Pavlik that should be posted shortly.
Rob (Williston Park, NY)
Dan, Bradley always says he's willing to fight anyone; if he doesn't take this fight b/c 1.3 mil aint enough, then he's full of it. Especially considerin a win would put him in line for a 3-4 mil payday against PAc or May
Dan Rafael (12:47 PM)
That seems to be the prevailing opinion of the Freaks considering all the comments sent to me on the topic.
Berndawg (CHI)
Love Child vs. Deandre Latimore for May 20th??
Dan Rafael (12:48 PM)
Probably not. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child is fighting at welterweight not junior middleweight.
Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)
Any news on the Sergio Martinez front? Him being off more than 4 months is punishment to the freaks.
Dan Rafael (12:48 PM)
Won't be back until at least September.
dylan (austin)
my workplace has blocked access to the tecate rebate website. should i burn the place down?
Dan Rafael (12:49 PM)
Why so drastic? Why not just wait until you get home and go to the site from your home computer?
Fernando (Ft Carson)
any word on whats next for Robert Guerrero? or is he wating for everythign to shake out between the big names at 140?
Dan Rafael (12:49 PM)
Really depends on what happens with some other fights. But if he doesn't get Morales or Khan, for example, he likely will be back to headline on Boxing After Dark on August 6.
Rich (Bristol, CT)
Dan, will Litzau's-Broner be televised?
Dan Rafael (12:50 PM)
Yes, it will open June 18 HBO card headlined by Alvarez-Rhodes.
Sam (Santa Monica)
I think you can't really argue Bradley's decision making here ESPECIALLY since Manny is looking to fight in Sept. against Marquez. He wins an easier fight, then takes on Khan in the later stages of the year. Then if he can beat Khan, he'll have much more exposure and more $s in a potential Pacquiao/Mayweather fight.
Dan Rafael (12:51 PM)
It wouldn't shock me if there was more to it than just not liking an offer of $1.3 million. Maybe Arum is also offering him Pacquiao for the fall in case Marquez doesn't accept or Golden Boy matches.
pedro nunez (miami)
do you know about the next figth of guillermo rigondeaux?
Dan Rafael (12:51 PM)
Right now, nothing specific.
Ricky (Tampa)
Any news with welterweight prospect Keith Thurman? He seems too inactive for a fighter his age...and looked much more impressive taking out Omar Bell than his amatuer rival Demrtrius Andrade. What are you thoughts on Thurman?
Dan Rafael (12:55 PM)
He actually came up when I spoke to Golden Boy matchmaker Eric Gomez yesterday. Apparently, Thurman has been dealing with a bit of a hand injury but if he is OK, he could be back May 21 on the Pascal-Hopkins 2 undercard. Thurman is a really good puncher and a crowd-pleasing gut, but I don't think he takes a shot too well.
Todd (Florence, SC)
Anything new regarding Paul William's next opponent?
Dan Rafael (12:56 PM)
An offer was made to Golden Boy to have Ishida (who knocked out Kirkland) fight him, but according to Richard Schaefer there is no deal yet. I have a hard time seeing Williams-Ishida as an HBO main event.
james (Windsor)
Do you know whats next for Steve Molitor?
Dan Rafael (12:57 PM)
Nothing specific at the moment, but I spoke to his manager, Cameron Dunkin, yesterday and he came up. There's a chance if Wilfredo Vazquez beats Arce next week, we could see a Vazquez-Molitor fight.
J (ATL)
I was really disappointed in yohnny perez last weekend. I'm a big fan. You think he's finished? Too many wars in too short of time?
Dan Rafael (12:58 PM)
He was terribly disappointing. Maybe he just got old. But he looked bad.
Jesse (El Mirage, AZ)
Regarding the Bradley situation, Dan. Do you know if Shaw is putting a promotional contract extention for Bradley side of the fight deal w/ Khan?
Dan Rafael (12:58 PM)
My understanding is that there is nothing about a contract extension in the offer for the Khan fight.
Dan Rafael (12:58 PM)
By the way -- here is the link for the notebook: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/columns/story?columnist=rafael_dan&id=6447736

karl (wales)
maidana didnt take morales seriously and wasnt fully fit...if morales faced khan, bradley or a fit maidana it would be like a lamb to the slaughter
Dan Rafael (12:59 PM)
Why do you say that about Maidana? He looked in great shape to me and fought his rear end off. And, of course, they said over and over he had a great camp and was in great shape.
Dave (UK)
You said in an article that Andre Ward beat Sakio Bika "easily", well if that's an easy fight I'd like to see a tough one! You shouldn't be fooled by the terrible scorecards.
Dan Rafael (1:00 PM)
It was a physical fight, yes, but Andre won almost every round.
Scott (Bloomington, MN)
If Williams v Ishida is on HBO, that is a damn disgrace. Hey Al Haymon, you (xxxx)! Please go and manage MMA fighters.
Dan Rafael (1:00 PM)
Settle down.
Rob @brewhfx (Halifax, Canada)
Is there a way a casual fan can get into the BWAA dinner or do I have to hang out at Craftsteak in order to say hello?
Dan Rafael (1:01 PM)
Fans are welcome at the BWAA dinner. Just buy a ticket. Go to BWAA.org for more info.
Todd (Florence, SC)
Thanks for the update. Williams-Ishida rots. Hoepfully, HBO rejects that garbage, or atleast puts it on an undercard.
Zim (Boston)
The mere mention of Williams-Ishida as a main event on HBO is why they need a new matchmaker. Know anyone that might fit that bill?
Dennis (Pittsburgh)
Kate Middleton's sister...in that dress?? YAHTZEE!!!!!
Dan Rafael (1:03 PM)
AGREEEED! I was watching the royal wedding with Mrs. DTM this morning for a bit and I have to admit -- I did comment to her about the sister.
Marc (Malden, MA)
During Max Kellerman's show, did Haye spend the entire time hiding underneath the table?
Dan Rafael (1:03 PM)
I can neither confirm nor deny.
Scott (Bloomington, MN)
Hey Dan, What sells more tickets in a Casino, A Bradley fight, or Dunkin-Shaw showdown.
Dan Rafael (1:04 PM)
I have to admit, I would pay cash money to see Shaw and Dunkin duke it out.
Killer (Queens)
Dan, saw the Klitschko doc yesterday at Tribeca Film Festival -- a couple of your comments in the film got great responses from the audience. The film itself got a nice ovation from the audience at the end. Nice work!
Dan Rafael (1:05 PM)
Very cool. I have not seen it yet, so I do not know what sound from me they played. I did an interview for the film in an Atlantic City hotel several months ago when I was there covering a fight and they came down to interview me for the movie. Did like an hour interview, so no idea what they actually used.
Bob (Hartford)
When will Pascal man up and fight a big fight outside of Canada???
Dan Rafael (1:06 PM)
Dude you are clueless.
Roy (Reno)
Pwill vs Ishida is this the level the most feared fighter in boxing has sunk to? Sad.
Dan Rafael (1:06 PM)
It is rather pathetic.
Joe (San Francisco, CA)
How exactly does Golden Boy "match" the offer to JMM regarding Top Rank's offer. They can't make a Pacquiao fight happen for JMM. So, is it just matching the financial terms for any opponent?
Dan Rafael (1:06 PM)
Yes financial terms and approximate time frame.
Killer (Queens)
Dan, any inside info on what went down when Wlad and Haye went face to face on Max Kellerman's HBO show? Even the official photo looked tense.
Dan Rafael (1:07 PM)
I heard quite a bit about it and it sounds like it's going to be great. But I will let you watch for yourself.
Zim (Boston)
Do you think the lack of animosity or drama on Fight Camp 360 has hurt the promotion at all?
Dan Rafael (1:08 PM)
Maybe a little. Shane and Manny are such nice guys and there is so little drama surrounding their camps that it has been a little boring to be honest.
Scott (Bloomington, MN)
Why the hell would Pascal fight anywhere else....He sells out in Canada and makes good money. He also is fighting the best. Of course Bob is from Hartford.
Dan Rafael (1:08 PM)
Thank you. It's nice to have a Fight Freak with some smarts.
Dennis (Pittsburgh)
Danno - Serious question here....How will David Haye pull out of his upcoming Klitschko fight? Chickenpox? Bah Mitzvah to attend? I'm going with turf toe suffered during training. You?
Dan Rafael (1:08 PM)
The gout?
Mickey (Chicago)
Just throwing it out there, but how about Juan Diaz vs Micheal Katsidis II (if the Baby Bull isn't retiring)? The first one was awesome, can't imagine a rematch wouldn't be entertaining as hell.
Dan Rafael (1:09 PM)
Good undercard fight somewhere on a PPV.
Scott (Bloomington, MN)
I say, a pothole takes Haye out 2 weeks before the fight.
John (Baltimore)
Dan, I was checking to see what time Friday Night fights were on tonight and I don't see anything listed?
Dan Rafael (1:11 PM)
Back to the Diaz-Katsidis 2 question, my response did not go through: I said good fight on a PPV undercard somewhere. As for FNF, I detailed it in my notebook.
Dan Rafael (1:12 PM)
But here, as a service to the Fight Freaks, is the deal with FNF this week: You can watch it live at 8 pm ET on ESPN3.com or ESPN Deportes. Or you can watch it at 10 pm Saturday on ESPN2 on tape delay.
Killer (Queens)
Dan, two of the clips from you in the Klitschko doc were about Vitali gaining great respect from the Lewis fight, "losing the fight but winning the event," and one where you say that the Klitschkos can't go back and fight Ali and Frazier, but only guys from their era, which they have done successfully. Those clips went down very well!
Dan Rafael (1:12 PM)
Good to know. I remember talking about that stuff. Were those the only two clips I was in?
Mitch (Oakland)
How many Ricky Hattons were at the royal wedding?
Dan Rafael (1:13 PM)
Trying to trick me I see. There is only one Ricky Hatton, but sources say there were NO Ricky Hattons at the wedding. So zero is your answer.
Doug (Lexington)
Dan, glad you qualified last night's tweet about Allan Green's next fight with a "Just lettin' you know". Not that we would've been fooled and thought you actually cared, though....
Dan Rafael (1:13 PM)
Thanks. I couldn't care less, but I thought a Freak or two might for some reason.
Isai (OKC)
Williams vs Ishida - that's fine for the comeback, but if this is on HBO WCB or is a main event on BAD, not good!
Dan Rafael (1:15 PM)
Exactly. Let's have that fight on ESPN or on an undercard somewhere. Not as a premium cable main event.
Mike (Emmett, ID)
I say, Haye catches leprosy from an armidillo and has to pull out of the fight.
Dan Rafael (1:16 PM)
Easily the most interesting one anyone has submitted. Do armadillo's have a high rate of leprosy? Educate me Freak. (By the way -- I have to believe this is the first ever chat mention of an armadillo or leprosy and they both have come in the same comment. Epic!)
Tom (Los Angeles)
A study released yesterday showed that armadillos can give leprosy to humans via physical contact.
Dan Rafael (1:17 PM)
See the things you can learn in a boxing chat? Amazing.
Killer (Queens)
Dan, no, they had you in a couple of other shorter clips, but those were the ones that made the biggest impact, as they were at crucial points in the film. They used your comments to make some key points the film wanted to make, along with the comments of a German boxing scribe.
Dan Rafael (1:18 PM)
Thanks for letting me know. Gotta see the movie.
robert (florida)
How does freddie roach train pac and khan if they booth are under contract with fueding organizations?
Dan Rafael (1:18 PM)
Freddie is an independent contractor and it is up to the fighters and their managers who will serve as trainer, not the promoter.
Mrs. DTM (at work)
I just wanted to tell all the freaks that I really appreciate the tweets, chat posts and well-wishes. I'm really feeling the Freak love.
Dan Rafael (1:19 PM)
That is from the real Mrs. DTM (at work).
Scott (Bloomington, MN)
I've got the armadillo over the shower door in 7!
Marc (Malden, MA)
I say Haye pulls out with menstrual cramps.
Dan Rafael (1:19 PM)
OMG.
Rags (NYC)
Is Bundrage going to get stripped if he doesn't sign to face Powell?
Dan Rafael (1:20 PM)
It's an overdue mandatory, put it that way, and the IBF doesn't usually mess around. The IBF would strip a stripper before her show began five minutes late.
Mickey (Chicago)
Fight Camp 360 hasn't done a very good job of selling Mosley, he just looks tired to me. It's almost like they're saying "Shane has great support and good people around him, so he'll be fine after he loses." FC 360 is like amateur hour compared to 24/7.
Dan Rafael (1:21 PM)
Part of the problem with Fight Camp is they can only work with what they have.
Omar (South Lake Tahoe)
Mrs. DTM CHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOW!
Roy (Reno)
The Super Six for all of its failures has sure cleared the smoke at 168. Abraham is a whining baby and cannot compete at this weight, Froch and Ward are real fighters, Taylor is completely shot (we all knew this) and Green is mentally weak. All in all I am still on board and loving it.
Dan Rafael (1:22 PM)
Solid analysis. And Glen Johnson is still a tough out for anyone. And Dirrell forgot his doctor's name.
Dan Rafael (1:23 PM)
Freaks don't forget to follow me on twitter -- @danrafaelespn. Just a few away from 14,000!
Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)
Dan, is Dena duBoef Bob Arum's daughter?
Dan Rafael (1:23 PM)
Step-daughter. And a star of Fight Camp!
Mickey (Chicago)
Speaking of armadillos, we should remember to cook some at the next BBQ.
Dan Rafael (1:24 PM)
An excellent point. This may be remembered as the armadillo chat.
steve (UK)
Im a big Degale fan and expect him to handle Groves in his upcoming grudge match. Do you agree and how far do you think DeGale could go??
Dan Rafael (1:24 PM)
I have said all along that I think DeGale beats Groves. DeGale, to me, probably will win a world title.
Marc (Malden, MA)
I'm glad to read Tavoris Cloud is finally getting back into the ring. That guy does not fight enough.
Dan Rafael (1:25 PM)
He just fought in August and again in December, so his june fight will be his third fight 10 months. That is active in my book these days.
Martin (Camden, New Jersey)
I was at the Teon Kennedy vs. Jorge Diaz fight last month in Atlantic City. Why can't we see more fights like that at that level on ESPN or ShoBox. They had a large crowd, which ShoBox never does and ESPN rarelt gets, and it was a great fight from beginning to end.
Dan Rafael (1:26 PM)
It was a terrific fight. I was surprised when ESPN turned down the fight multiple times.
Power Pellets (Las Vegas)
Who needs a Royal Wedding when we have King and Queen Freak in the same chat.
Dan Rafael (1:26 PM)
An excellent point.
Dan Rafael (1:26 PM)
An excellent point.
Matt (Lincoln, NE)
Dan, you are worth every penny that espn pays you
Dan Rafael (1:27 PM)
Probably more. :)
Mike (Chicago)
Any word on Chris John's next opponent?
Dan Rafael (1:27 PM)
Not a thing, although he did just fight a couple of weeks ago and beat Daud Yordan.
Scott (Bloomington, MN)
Hey Dan, any chance Selcuk Aydin could step in and face the Love Child? I know he is already a mandatory, but seems a winnable fight for him to raise his US profile.
Dan Rafael (1:28 PM)
Zero chance. He is Victor Ortiz's mandatory and I suspect that will be their next fight.
robin (sweden)
hey dan, wouldnt it be sweet to have a countdown for the chat?
Dan Rafael (1:28 PM)
Chat Camp 360!!! Or The Chat: 24/7!!!
Fred (CT)
Why doesn't Omar Narvaez get more love from people making lb-4-lb lists. This guy has better ring generalship than anybody except Juan Manuel Marquez.
Dan Rafael (1:29 PM)
Because although he is a very good boxer, he has not had any kind of definging fight.
lupe (australia)
what do you think of billy the kid dibs chances against garcia for the ibf belt.
Dan Rafael (1:29 PM)
That fight is not likely to happen. (Thankfully.)
pedro nunez (miami)
is donaire back under top rank? wen he fights again?
Dan Rafael (1:31 PM)
The case is still going on. They are going to binding arbitration and there won't be an outcome probably until at least the end of June. So at the moment, Donaire is simply in limbo waiting for a ruling.
Omar (South Lake Tahoe)
chat 24/7 no doubt, the opening theme music is way better,
Dan Rafael (1:32 PM)
Enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEVueUtHeNA
Dan Rafael (1:32 PM)
I'd like that be played as I walk from my bedroom upstairs all the way to my office, like my ring walk, as I get ready to chat!!!!!!!
Barry (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
Victor Ortiz vs. Mike Jones. Who wins?
Dan Rafael (1:33 PM)
Good fight. Let's see it (but wont happen -- Top Rank vs. Golden Boy).
John (San Fran)
I want that theme music as my ring tone
Dan Rafael (1:34 PM)
For real -- when certain HBO people call my cell that is the ring tone.
John (Chicago)
Sadly, it turns out that Kate Middleton's sister has a cricket-playing boyfriend.
Dan Rafael (1:35 PM)
And Freak Nation mourns.
Alan (Ireland)
Who or what the hell is a Bermane Stiverne?
Dan Rafael (1:35 PM)
Do ya homework.
CHOPPER (brooklyn)
Dan, do your cats ever sit on your keyboard looking for attention as you try to type?
Dan Rafael (1:37 PM)
From time to time. Not Thunder though. Only Popo.
Liev Schreiber (Narrating, Chat 24 / 7)
It has been an arduous process; one in which we've seen Freaks define themselves as different - almost as different as night and day. But this Friday, when the coffee is poured, the web browsers opened, the armadillos released, these Freaks will have more in common than any other Freaks on the planet. Dan Rafael. Valuev's poop. Armadillos. This....is Chat 24/7
Dan Rafael (1:38 PM)
Pure legend.
Dave (NYC)
Dan, Are you a John Cena supporter or The Rock?
Dan Rafael (1:39 PM)
I gotta go with Cena.
Bobby (New York)
Any idea who Dirrell will be put in with? Match him easy or slightly tough?
Dan Rafael (1:39 PM)
One name I heard mentioned as a possibility is Alejandro Berrio, a former titleholder.
Berndawg (CHI)
What are you rocking to today, GOT?
Dan Rafael (1:40 PM)
I've got a little KISS Alive II playing.
Spud (Ireland)
Sorry Dan I have googled this but why is Joel Julio called the love child? I keep seeing this Ahhhhh love child stuff every week.
Dan Rafael (1:40 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.
Gus Johnson (Showtime)
KATE! MIDDLETON's! SISTER! WITH THE HOTNESS! PIPPAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! STEALING THE SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dan Rafael (1:40 PM)
HOTNESS IN BUNCHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Peter (NY)
Were you one of the reporters Bernard Hopkins stared down after he embarrassed Kelly Pavlik?
Dan Rafael (1:42 PM)
Yup. He was looking me dead in the eye.
Darryl (Montreal)
Dan, will be getting my tickets for Hopkins Pascal 2 today, is Montreal going to be blessed with your presence May 21st?
Dan Rafael (1:43 PM)
That is the plan! I can't wait. Montreal is a great city. I have been there many times (having grown up only about three hours away by car) but I have never been there for a fight.
Pete (NYC)
I hope Andre Dirrell enjoys fighting on ESPN2... I don't ever want to see him on a channel I pay extra for
David (Winston-Salem)
"HOTNESS IN BUNCHES!!!"...not that is beyond hilarious! Great call Dan.
GUS JOHNSON (Showtime)
OH MY GODDDDD THE BOQUET THROW...SHE CAUGHT IT..PIPPA CAUGHT IT ...OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDD. PIPPA WINS.PIPPA WIIIIIINS.
Dan Rafael (1:45 PM)
I am just freakin dying laughing here. For real. The cats are looking at me. I'm laughing, the cats are staring, KISS is playing. It's chaos alone in my office.
Khan/Judah (HBO)
What city will we fight in?
Dan Rafael (1:45 PM)
How about they actually make the fight first?
Kevin (Denver)
Like what you've seen out of Robert Helenius so far, or is this a great case of selective matchmaking?
Dan Rafael (1:46 PM)
Combination of both.
Vinny Paz (Rhode Island)
Dan will NSAC give Margarito a license to fight in Sept? Whats next for Maravilla Martinez?
Dan Rafael (1:48 PM)
If Margarito applies again in Nevada I would imagine he would be licensed. As for Martinez, September is what it looks like, but no specific opponent yet.
Rags (NYC)
Dan: What do you think the chances are the Don King manages to spin DaVarryl Williamson back into something on the basis of his destruction over poor Mike Marrone?
Dan Rafael (1:48 PM)
Don is good, but not that good.
Dan Rafael (1:49 PM)
Here's some quality HBO music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFDdJePmhBs
Miguel (Mexico)
Where is Perro?
Dan Rafael (1:49 PM)
The pound?
Justin (Seattle by way of Jersey)
I know you said you were looking forward to seeing Seth Mitchell again. What do you think his future looks like? When will he take a big step up?
Dan Rafael (1:52 PM)
Seth will get his first live TV exposure on ShoBox on May 13 against Evans Quinn. Glad to see it.
Paul Williams (HBO)
Ishida is a very solid opponent, know what I'm sayin?
Danny (Chicago)
Ortiz vs. Aydin actually sounds like an exciting matchup in my opinion. Do you think that is the perfect opponent for Ortiz at this stage in his career?
Dan Rafael (1:53 PM)
Coming off the Berto fight, yes.
Dan Rafael (1:54 PM)
Freaks, my feature on Kelly Pavlik has been posted: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/columns/story?columnist=rafael_dan&id=6449488
Mike (Los Angeles)
What do you think of Maidana/Oritiz after Aydin?
Dan Rafael (1:55 PM)
Bring it on please.
John Byczko (Worcester)
Any updates on Edwin Rodriguez, specifically the shoulder?
Dan Rafael (1:56 PM)
I talked to Edwin a few weeks ago when I was at Foxwoods for a fight and ran into him. He said he is healed up and probably will return this summer, June/July probably.
brian (ca)
Last week you listed your top 10 heavyweights of all time. Where was Tyson? I'm a new boxing fan. Is he considered by most to not be one of the top 10 heavyweights of all time? No one seemed to disagree with you.
Dan Rafael (1:57 PM)
Tyson is not a top 10 heavyweight.
jacq (Nv)
Dan whats your thoughts on pavliks opponent?
Dan Rafael (1:57 PM)
Considering Kelly has been out of action for 13 months and has been in rehab for alcohol I think it's a very reasonable opponent.
Kevin (London, UK)
Travel to Cleverly-Brahemer and Degale-Groves then get home to watch Hopkins Pascal. Doesn't get much better than that!
Dan Rafael (1:58 PM)
That sounds like a helluva day.
Matt (Spokane, WA)
Based on the putrid sanctioning bodies, I no longer let my kids eat Alphabet Soup
Dan Rafael (1:58 PM)
Pay the man, Shirley.
Jim Lampley (HBO Headquarters)
Unbelievable! Unbelieveable (referring to Pippa)! You're going to watch Prince William go crazy now. You're going to watch Prince William go absolutely bezerk (looking at Pippa instead of Kate)! Pippa stopped the ceremony with 2 vows to go! This has got to be one of the most unusual (and hot) bridesmaids in the whole history of the British monarchy!
Dan Rafael (1:59 PM)
Epic.
Mike (Los Angeles)
Is it only me, or am I the only one that thinks Ryan Rhodes has a really good shot against JJC Jr? Do you think that Roach will make a JCC Jr a different, better fighter?
Dan Rafael (1:59 PM)
I think Rhodes is a very solid and legit opponent for Alvarez.
Kris Krepps (GR)
Would you tell Tyson to his face that he was not a Top ten Heavyweight?
Dan Rafael (2:01 PM)
Yes. In fact, we discussed it once a few years ago. He agreed.
Jake (Los Angeles)
How do you feel about Whodini's 1984 claim that "The Freaks Come Out at Night?" I believe your weekly chat proves otherwise. No wonder those guys are washed up.
Dan Rafael (2:01 PM)
Great song. Brian Kenny likes to quote it often when we are on the FNF set.
Power Pellets (Las Vegas)
I nominate we elevate Kevin from London to "super" freak status for that day of fights.
Dan Rafael (2:02 PM)
For a small sanctioning fee, of course.
Brandon (Houston)
Yo dan any news on mayorga is he still gonna fight?
Dan Rafael (2:02 PM)
He'll fight again. He will need the money. He has been mentioned as a possible Canelo Alvarez opponent in September if Alvarez beats Rhodes.
Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)
Condolences to Micky Ward and Dicky Ecklund on the death of their mother Alice Ward yesterday...
Dan Rafael (2:03 PM)
Agreed. A Freak 10-count.
Emanuel Steward (HBO)
You know you dream of bridesmaids like this but very seldom do they end up being there. Pippa is more than you could dream of!
Dan Rafael (2:04 PM)
Well played.
Ron (Bethel,ct)
I know were along way off but I can't wait for rios vs antillion... There is no way that won't be a war in the ring!!!!
Dan Rafael (2:06 PM)
Take it to the banks. Obviously, will be a slugfest.
Derek (Brooklyn)
Any word if Pascal screamed "TAKE THE TEST!" at Bhops during their Face Off??
Dan Rafael (2:06 PM)
Good question. I don't know. But I one thing is for sure for all Freaks. They should TAKE THE TEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Louis (NYC)
Pippa Middleton: Making Royal Wedding's Tolerable for Males Since 2011.
psycho (LaLaLand)
look i dont like the punisher-isida matchup, but you have to admit that ishida is a bit marketable following the kirkland fight
Dan Rafael (2:07 PM)
Fine, but as an HBO main event? Seriously?
Dan Rafael (2:07 PM)
Fine, but as an HBO main event? Seriously?
geo (oakland,ca)
any word on the opponent for rafeal marquez? and will we watch on the undercard jcc card
Dan Rafael (2:09 PM)
Not sure. Been told Marquez probably won't be on the card.
Mike (Los Angeles)
Why did Bernard Hopkins look you in the eye after he beat Pavlik?
Dan Rafael (2:10 PM)
Because most of the press picked against him and BHop has always used the press predictions (and me specifically and a few other guys he has known for a long time) as one of his motivations. He has told us that. He uses our doubt or picking against him as a motivation in his fights. He has done it for years. Whatever works for him I once told him. Against Pavlik, he proved us all wrong again and was letting us know by staring us down from the ring after the fight.
Scott (Bloomington, MN)
Hey Dan, You referenced the Pascal-Hopkins faceoff with Max in the notebook and I heard Max gushing over has amazing it was. He stated it was the best by far. Have you seen it yet?
Dan Rafael (2:11 PM)
I have not seen it but I have heard from folks who were at the taping that it is outstanding.
Ron (Bethel, ct)
Hey Dan I read somewhere that Molina was overweight at the weigh in last night and had to lose the weight... Any word on that?
Dan Rafael (2:12 PM)
Yes, he was a pound over for the ESPN2 fight, but wound up making the weight.
Larry Merchant (HBO)
They say Pippa Middleton is spoken for. But if she is, as everyone says, the hottest brides maid ever, can a mere cricket player keep pace with her? We are about. To find. Out.
Dan Rafael (2:13 PM)
Brilliant.
Harold Lederman (Ringside)
...........Thanks Jim, Pippa's really winning a war out there. I might give Round 3 to Kate but Pippa's dominace during the procession, her poise during the photographs, supreme. 8 rounds to 1, 89-82 Pippa "The Backside" Middleton.
Dan Rafael (2:13 PM)
LOL!!!!!! Freaks are taking care of business today.
DJ (Florida)
Who is being brought along slower: Andrade or Sadam Ali?
Dan Rafael (2:13 PM)
Andrade.
Gary (Ft. Wayne, IN)
sorry armadillo, this is officially the Pippa Middleton chat.
R! (Bay Area)
How about Joel Julio vs Randall Bailey?
Dan Rafael (2:16 PM)
BOMBS AWAY!!!!!
Miguel (los angeles)
it doesnt make sense for Marquez not to take an interim fight, if he fights a 140 like judah or so he can create more excitement that he is able to fight at the higher weights. is he just scared to loose and his shot at pac goes out the window?
Dan Rafael (2:17 PM)
Marquez is not going to risk the payday against Pacquiao by taking a fight this summer. If he takes a fight this summer it means he is not fighting Pacquiao.
Tommy (NYC)
Was it just me or was the last Fight Camp 360 almost unwatchable?
Dan Rafael (2:18 PM)
It was not you. Do not adjust your TV set.
David Haye (under a rug)
All of this degrading talk about the Royal Wedding has so offended and disgusted me that I must announce I am withdrawing from the fight.
Dan Rafael (2:19 PM)
And blocking the Freaks on Twitter!
Terry (Seattle)
Dan, thanks for the chat as I am looking for it every Friday. How do you or other boxing experts feel when a fight prediction is wrong?
Dan Rafael (2:20 PM)
Speaking for myself, I dont ever give it a second thought, means absolutely nothing to me.
@TheBoxingEmpire (Twitter)
WE've been ranking your predictions, out of 40 freaks you are in 15th place
Dan Rafael (2:23 PM)
I guess that's not too bad.
Justin (Seattle)
Do you consider it a badge of honor that David Haye blocked you on Twitter? I'm leaning toward it being an honor.
Dan Rafael (2:24 PM)
Definitely an honor.
Dean (Chicago)
Is Haye a thin-skinned crybaby with all reporters or is it just you?
Dan Rafael (2:28 PM)
It's not just with me.
Mark (Chicago)
Is it true that JMM is not free to accept any offer? Is the ball inGolden Boy's court? I doubt they let him walk without a fight
Dan Rafael (2:29 PM)
He can accept any offer, but Golden Boy has the right to match any offer until the end of February 2012.
Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)
Dan, Stiverne's KO in January was awesome. It will be great to see him on TV. I'm with you though, wish it was someone other than Austin.
John (PA)
Does Top Rank's offer to Marquez talk about if it will be a Showtime or HBO fight?
Dan Rafael (2:35 PM)
No, because that does not matter in terms of the offer. The only thing matters is the when, how much, what weight class.
Kevin (CT)
In honor of Mrs DTM's GREAT news I just made a little donation to the Jimmy V foundation, freaks do the same!! jimmyv.org, put in $5 everyone!
Dan Rafael (2:36 PM)
Nice.
Rob (Spokane)
Danimal, When are you planning to fly into Vegas for the fight?
Dan Rafael (2:38 PM)
I will be arriving in Vegas on Wednesday morning. Kieran will be there to handle the fighter arrivals on Tuesday.
Amain (Las Vegas)
I want Ortiz-Maidana II! I think that'd be a helluva fight, and I think Ortiz takes Maidana in the second one. Only problem is I don't think either one will leave their weight division for the fight.
Dan Rafael (2:40 PM)
Since Ortiz has a welterweight title, if the rematch happens, Maidana would certainly have to move up to fight him.
Lee (Alabama)
by the way still don't have power at my house here in North Alabama but I can read this and post from my cell phone
Dan Rafael (2:41 PM)
Impressive. Hope everyone down there is OK.
Mark (Chicago)
Did u see Frankie Gomez last night? impressed? Is he on a DLH-Trinidad-like collision course with Benavidez jr?
Dan Rafael (2:43 PM)
I saw it. Gomez is a good prospect but he knocked out a complete stiff in a rancid main event.
Randy (NYC)
Why exactly did david haye block you on twitter?
Dan Rafael (2:44 PM)
He can't handle the truth.
Ankur (New Jersey)
If a Ortiz-Maidana rematch were to happen at 147.... Who would you give the edge to?
Dan Rafael (2:44 PM)
Ortiz.
Davison (Florida)
dan the freaks were not so impressed with your mention of Manny Pacquiao offering a rematch to Tony Margarito from yesterday
Dan Rafael (2:46 PM)
Learn to read. I didn't write that. Frankly, I think it was an error.
Pete (Philly)
Twitter quote from BHOP "Harry shuld b riding wit Pippa". Even he a fan!
Dan Rafael (2:47 PM)
See???? BHop and I don't disagree about everything!
Jack (DC)
I assume that with Floyd Mayweather's trial being pushed back (again) to late July that we can officially say he will not be back in action this year.
Dan Rafael (2:47 PM)
I would not say anything "official" about Mayweather. Who knows?
Max Kellerman (Las Vegas)
The Pippa vs Kate debate has been all the talk as of late in barbershops around the country. The consensus is that even if Kate brings her very best, the pure looks of Pippa is just to much for Kate to handle. The only way we find out for sure though is if Kate steps up to the challenge and gives us all what we want.Jim.
Ðave, NJ [via mobile]
Shannon Briggs cancelled his twitter account. He started fast but was done by the second month.
Dan Rafael (2:49 PM)
What a shame.
Leonard Ellerbee (Vegas)
The Royal wedding did not actually occur.
Dan Rafael (2:50 PM)
Naturally.
jimmy (vegas)
do you get upset when other members of the media take veiled shots at you?
Dan Rafael (2:50 PM)
No.
CHOPPER (brooklyn)
Briggs did nothing but make a fool of himself on Twitter, which proves that Twitter isn't for everyone.
Dan Rafael (2:51 PM)
He's made himself look like a fool in a lot more places than just twitter.
MikeRo72 (Chicago)
Danno-Whats your take on Juan Ma's last performance. Weight drained? Under trained? Personal Problems? Or did he just run in to a determined Pro who capitalized on a suspect/war ravaged chin?
Dan Rafael (2:52 PM)
I think weight was an issue for sure. He was going through a divorce. That has to mess you up too. But Salido was a very determined guy and he 's a good puncher who had nothing to lose by giving it everything he had.
Kevin (LA)
Is there any chance John fights Gamboa?
Dan Rafael (2:53 PM)
As I have said all along, unlikely.
Al Bernstein (UK)
I just got hit by a water bottle at the royal wedding
Alec (Nashville)
This makes me want to puke just typing it, but: what is going on with Kermit Cintron?
Dan Rafael (2:54 PM)
Likely to fight on Showtime under Rios-Antillon in July.
Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)
What's the latest on Humberto Soto, Dan? Does he have a new promoter, let alone a fight lined up yet, or will Top Rank come up with more money to "make up" for "past inequities" to satisfy his demands so that they can re-sign him?
Dan Rafael (2:57 PM)
Nothing specific, although I heard he may fight in Mexico in June with his own people setting up the fight.
Mark (Chicago)
Is Pippa the most Legit prospect to come out of the UK in a while?
Dan Rafael (3:02 PM)
OK, Fight Freaks, thanks for chatting today. It was as memorable as the royal wedding! Follow me on twitter for your boxing updates and make sure to scope out the new notebook and Pavlik feature and the various blogs and news stories. I'll chat with you next week from Las Vegas, where I will be covering Pacquiao-Mosley. Have a great weekend. Peace.
