AJ Mass (10:58 AM)
Happy Friday! Time for another sixty minutes of fantasy chattage. We're happy to discuss the latest Mid-May rankings or any other questions you may have. After all, the second cup of coffee is in hand. Who is up first?
JP (New York)
Those rankings are BS, how do have only 3 in the top 50 and im in 1st place?(10 team league)
AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
First and foremost, if you're going to criticize any of the ESPN rankings... it has nothing to do with what the players have done so far. It's "rest of the season" only.
Thoughts on Andres Torres going forward AJ?
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
Nice player with a lot of upside, but a little concern on re-injury. I'm cautiously optimistic.
Greinke at 233. Care to discuss your thoughts?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
I might be a little low on Greinke, but keep in mind that I only ranked about 60 SP overall. It's not like he's my 200th SP. He's looked OK so far, but the few poor innings he's thrown so far scare me a bit. If the dam bursts, it may blow open.
Your rankings are nowhere near anyone else's. You're either a genius or an idiot, which is it?
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
Time will tell... time will tell.
Jay (LA, CA)
Hey AJ,Is there a reason why you are lower on Hosmer than everyone else?
AJ Mass (11:07 AM)
I definitely wanted to rank him, but frankly, we still don't know what he will be... it's such a small sample size and many other players have been figured out by the league on the second look-see.
Homer vs Indians, you like?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
DN will come out later, but I'm a bit worried about Homer this matchup. Tribe has swatted him around before and are on fire at the plate.
I checked out your rankings and have a question: Why do you like Tabata and Span more than Brantley? Similar skills but Brantley is actually performing.
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
It's such a delicate balancing act, this ranking process and I suggest everyone give it a try to see what you would do with the task. I like Brantley, but see more "room for improvement" over the current numbers from Tabata and Span.
nice call on Collmenter yesterday, I wanted to do it, but just couldn't bring myself to, went with Cueto instead.. didn't work out.
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
Any given day... could just as easily blown up. Cueto just didn't have his head in the game - maybe a function of the early start - and you could see early he was not at top form. Unfortunately, fantasy players can't pull a SP early...
AJ - Love that your rankings provide so much chatter and debate. I think it's awesome for people really interested in talking fantasy sports. What's your take on Hamilton going forward? You ranked him relatively low. You still concerned about potential injuries? He is the reigning AL MVP and that Texas lineup is loaded.
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
Absolutely with Hamilton it was all about the injury risk. Both he and Cruz are top-10-worthy if 100 percent. We don't know exactly when Josh returns, and once he does, how long he'll stay...
I couldn't believe how high you guys ranked Rajai Davis (and Ia??m a Jays fan). What is there to like about him after his steals? Low avg, no HRs and only 5 RBIs, and Farrel has him batting 9th. Would you roster him over Johnny Damon, Andres Torres or Carlos Pena?
AJ Mass (11:15 AM)
That's the beauty of multiple opinions in this process. I didn't rank Rajai for pretty much what Alex said... but I can understand those who did. The SB's do have value... but if he doesn't hit, it doesn't matter.
So getting back to Collmenter....legit, or will teams start figuring out his deceptive delivery?
AJ Mass (11:16 AM)
I think he needs a third pitch - he'll be good one time around the league and then we'll have to see how he adjusts.
With the rapture being tomorrow at 6:00, do I play it safe and start Price at 4:00 or take my chances and start Pineda at 10:00?
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
Can't go wrong either way... but if your league isn't settling up on a higher plane, I'll wait for Pineda.
The rankings are really interesting. Guys you project to "improve" could not be dealt for guys lower on the rankings. No way Logan Morrison or Alex Gordon could be acquired for Moreland, Tabata, or Span yet there is a significant rankings disparity.
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
Value is always in the eye of the beholder. But keep in mind that most people overvalue the "last few games" over the full picture. "I can't trade X for Y because he's hit home runs in three straight." This is a snapshot, and should help inform your opinions, but it's not a straight one-for-one trade list.
Jeff S. (Vermont)
be honest, you ranked some guys super low to skew the overall data, other than some random outliers, your rankings arent too shabby, those "statements" really ruin credibility.
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
Absolutely not. I ranked them as I honestly believe that these guys will do the rest of the way. It's impossible to make "statements" with no idea where everyone else will be ranking everybody.
Matt (Pembroke Pines)
According the the rankings its a perfect time to trade Agone for Albert? Why am I so nervous about it then?
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
You have a top-10 player. You're not gaining all that much my dealing for another top-10 player, if anything... don't tinker with what isn't broken.
You should have ranked everyone on my team higher! OK, just kidding. You guys do great work. How do you see Peavy doing the rest of the year? High risk, high reward. He has to be better than Wolf, right?
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
Peavy is a stud... provided he stays healthy, which is no lock. But in this day and age, he's as risky as anyone else...
So why did you give Pujols the benefit of the doubt and not HanRam?
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
Completely valid question... and there'll be an article up on Monday explaining further... but I think Ramirez is more a function of not adjusting to a new approach to how the league is dealing with him... it's more than just a regular slump, which is what Albert is going through. (And I had Pujols at 6, lower than any of my colleagues as well. But somehow less outrage.)
Any news on CarGo's injury?
AJ Mass (11:28 AM)
I don't think it's serious. Expect him to sit today, but not much more than that...
Bautista is legit?
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
The power is legit... the average will come down.
AJ - I understand how you rank hitters within hitters and pitchers within pitchers, but what method/reasoning do you employee to rank pitchers within hitters and hitters within pitchers?
AJ Mass (11:32 AM)
It's not an easy task, but over the years, I've come up with my own methods to weigh them. Generally speaking, SP are 20 percent less valuable than hitters and RP are 80 percent less valuable... it's a juggling act and a completely inexact science.
Wins aside, please rank Carpenter, Ubaldo, Colon
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
Colon, Ubaldo, Carpenter...
Keeping this ranking train going please rank: Lilly, Danks, CJ Wilson...can pick up one off waivers
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
CJ, Ted, Mr. Danks.
You ranked Juan Pierre #99 and didn't rank Joakim Soria. In other words, in a 10-team draft you'd use a 10th round pick on Pierre and let Soria go undrafted. Seriously?
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
The Soria "omission" will also be addressed on Monday. I think he's toxic right now. He's changed his delivery, ruined his effectiveness and isn't going to get it back in 2011.
Jaime Garcia (Missouri)
I am like the Rodney Dangerfield of fantasy baseball. No respect! Surely I am a top 20 pitcher at the very least?
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
At the moment, no doubt.
I think John wanted you to rank Ubaldo, Carpenter and Colon by their value in fantasy baseball, not weight.
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
Tee hee. He said to take out the wins... that's where most of Ubaldo's value is going to come from.
so, are you worried about Soria losing his job? if so, who takes the KC job?
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
Brad (Palm Springs)
Are you legit?
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
Too legit to quit, amigo.
Rich (St. louis)
Do you think Salas keeps the closer job? Kid looks nasty right now.
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
One more week like this, and yes.
Do you think Haren has his usual second half slump? I don't expect him to be a top 5 starter for the whole year but does he stay top 15? I see you have hiim ranked higher than most others. just wondering if I should start looking to trade high
AJ Mass (11:46 AM)
Haren second-half slump is a myth. I'm fully on board with Dan.
If forced to pick someone up, which LAD closer would you want for next week? the rest of the season?
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
Guerrier for now. Jansen eventually.
Have Youk and Cawford turned the corner? Where do they end up in the Boston lineup?
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
Youk is fine. Clearly I have doubts on Carl. Even last night's "game-winning hit" really wasn't. If outfield plays regular depth, it was an F8.
How much longer will Melancon close for the Astros?
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
One more blown save and it's Fulchino.
Matt (York, PA)
Is Feliz a top 5 closer?
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
Not until he starts fanning a few more hitters.
Ben (Bellflower, CA)
Are you worried about Craig Kimbrel?
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
Not worried so much as I think he'd do better in the 8th with Venters at the tail.
J ((St Pete, FLA))
should I be worried about Ryan Howard. K's are killing me!!!
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
Obivously if you're in a points league, this is an issue. If not, I'm not worried.
Mike (San Diego)
Is your name pronounced like it looks or is it pronounced like what a rolling stone doesn't gather? The way Nate says it on the podcast when he mentions your name, it sounds like the latter.
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
Nate often goes with the Kevin Maas version... but it is indeed pronounced like the religious ceremony.
Kyle lohse (STL)
Should fantasy owners sell high on me or continue to enjoy my success?
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
Ride the lightning... because of the low K-rate you're not likely to get takers at value anyway.
Is Pence for Polanco a good deal? I need a 3B and I'm loaded in the OF. Thanks man.
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
Any reason you ranked Matt Holliday 32 players lower than anyone else?
AJ Mass (12:01 PM)
Crazy-high BABIP, Pujols will drive in more ahead of him and Puma won't provide as much protection behind him.
Hey AJ ... I think you need to address your evaluation of Crawford in more detail/depth. You are obviously down on him; but, since you're big on "sample sizes", why not give him the benefit of the doubt? Is there something you've observed that would lead you to believe he's really not going to perform better than top 60 "for the rest of the season?"
AJ Mass (12:03 PM)
Carl's changed his swing, and is flailing at pitches. He's never hit well at Fenway, and is adjusting way too much to make up for it... and b/c he's had some actual success at home, I don't think he's apt to recalibrate.
AJ Mass (12:05 PM)
That's the whistle, gang! Thanks for stopping by. There's Twitter for those I couldn't get to... until the next time... good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
