AJ Mass (10:59 AM)
Greetings gang. Sixty minutes on the clock... second cup of coffee in hand... So you think you can chat? Cue the music, please...
Hey AJ! Had Posey, can have off the wire, Hernandez, Lucroy, or just dropped Santana from Cleveland....your ranking?
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
Let's get the Posey replacement questions out of the way... I like Hernandez, Lucroy and Santana in that order for this season. In a keeper, I'd rather have Carlos, though.
Carl Crawford (Boston)
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
Funny how it only turned around after I mentioned what was wrong... Thanks for reading, Carl. Now keep swinging for rightfield.
alan (planet earth)
who wins the closer job in toronto?
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
I think Rauch is the best option, but it will come down to whoever gets "two in a row" first and then doesn't lose the next one... could be a carousel for many months.
Dustin ackley (Minors)
will I ever be called up??
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
No rush, really, for the M's. The longer they stay close without him, the less likely they'll make a move before the ASB.
Looking at Werth's numbers, they're not far off from McCutchen, but conventional wisdom seems to be that McCutch is way more valuable. What's really the difference between these two guys?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
Werth is more of an all-or-nothing type as the K-rate indicates. Cutch just has a little more upside and as eye improves, the stats gap should as well.
Doesn't it seem like there is an unusually high number of proven players hitting for really low averages this year? What's going on? You can say its early, but really, its not anymore...
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
Totally conjecture, but I'd have to say, in general, with the very high number of rainouts this season, that perhaps that has factored into hitters being unable to get into a regular rhythm as much as in past years.
Jabba (In a galaxy far far away)
Your thoughts on A. Oliver and J. Nicasio this week and forward? Are they deep 5x5 worthy?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
Oliver showed very little in a handful of starts last season. I actually was impressed with Wilk yesterday more than anything I'd seen here. Nicasio will be fun to watch... he's making a big jump and I expect an adjustment period, but he can bring it.
Phillip Humber (Ozzie Guillen Land)
Okay so look, I have pitched very well as a starter. What are my chances of sticking in the rotation after June 1st?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
My guess is you're the one headed to the pen until the next big injury or a trade of one of the other arms.
Jeff (Rochester, NY)
Please rank job security (least secure-most secure): Melancon, Santos, Walden, Salas, Madson
AJ Mass (11:15 AM)
Melancon, Salas, Santos, Walden, Madsen. I'd say any or all could lose job with a bad week, except in Philly.
Does Jon Jay provide value in a 12 team keeper league? How about Justin Turner?
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
Both guys are in the same category... *IF* opportunity continues, they have value... but that's no lock. Roster-worthy, yes. But the clock is ticking on both as teammates heal.
Nathan Pratt (Boston)
A buddy of mine offered Astrubal Cabrera for Hanley in a points league. Should I be offended?
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
Why? So far Asdrubal has been a top 10 offensive player, and frankly, while THAT'S probably not continuing, I still like his chances of matching HanRam rest of the way.
Offered a guy Street/Scherzer for Bruce and says it's not enough. Thoughts?
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
A Colorado closer and a No. 4 fantasy SP from Detroit. That's a hard deal to swing, even if the other guy needs pitching...
Can I set and forget Buhholz again?
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
I don't think we're there just yet... but he's at least back in the infomercial.
Ellen (Los Angeles)
Posey replacements for deep leagues - Please rank: Olivo, Salty, Hanigan. Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
Salty, Hanigan, Olivo: in that order.
would you trade Adrian straight up for Pujols?
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
Probably not. Not that I'm suggesting Pujols won't be Albert again... but I'm not likely to switch horses midstream if I'm galloping towards the finish line at a great rate of speed.
Mark (Cape Cod)
Need to grab a SP.. Pls rank going forward Danks, E Jackson, and Lowe.. Thx
AJ Mass (11:28 AM)
Lowe, EJ, Danks... not sure both Sox end the season in Chicago, though. Whoever moves will probably get a bump in value.
Time to drop Huff?
AJ Mass (11:30 AM)
I would say not yet... let's see how the Giants respond to all the changes first. He may well produce more in the new lineup.
In a vacuum, would you trade Rollins for Oswalt? Who wins?
AJ Mass (11:32 AM)
I'd keep J-Roll. Now that Utley is back, his stats should see a boost.
Any hesitation starting Pineda against The Evil Empire?
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
Any given day, anyone can get torched... but even though the sample size is small, Pineda's been as solid as anyone else this year.
Please rank these speedsters: Pierre, Crisp or RDavis.
AJ Mass (11:36 AM)
Coco, Juan, Rajai... Though Pierre is certainly sliding fast...
Is Colby Lewis a must start every time?
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
No sub-500 pitcher with a K-rate under 6.5 is a must start every time.
I admire your courage to take a bold stance on high profile players. With that being said, do you really think Hanley will not be a top 30 hitter come summer time?
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
Because of the deep hole he's dug for himself, I don't think he will be... if we're talking overall numbers. But having said that -- he certainly can be a top 30 hitter from today to August. That's pretty much where I ranked him.
Do you intentionally use the first names as answers when last names are used in the questions? See Buster response. It seems to be a habit of yours. We are all very impressed you know their full names.
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
Not trying to impress anyone... more a case of putting both names in there to help those who may know one or the other and not both... of course when I get questions like "Who should I trade for Jones or Johnson?" all bets are off.
After saying this, "No sub-500 pitcher with a K-rate under 6.5 is a must start every time." Do you start Colby tonight?
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
Had him ranked 11 of 30 in Daily Notes. That's more good than bad.
dallas (San Diego)
Buster Olney seems to like Collmenter. What are your thoughts? Go get him in a 14 team mixed league?
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
A lot to like... and I've been kind to him in DN so far... but he's a two-pitch guy and I worry about the "second-time around."
Rest of season...Buccholz, Jurrjens, Bud Norris. In that order?
AJ Mass (11:46 AM)
No, I think Jair far and away the head of that trio. Bud and Clay close together - I happen to be high on Bud, so I put him 2nd.
Buka (cumberland Ri)
How serious is the Homer Bailey injury? Time to bail on Bailey?
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
Never a good sign to have a pitcher go off to visit team doctors...
When do I start shopping Haren? Was thinking of going after Lester?
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
I don't think you do start to shop Haren in a 1-for-1 deal. Now if you're getting Lester and a hitter, then perhaps.
Thoughts on Choo? He's been killing me with the K's and lack of power. Do you still view him as a top 15 OF? Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
Teaser - Tuesday article is all about Shin-Soo. I do not view him as Top 15, but I don't think he's as bad as you think for fantasy.
JWeaver all right? just a little bump in the road?
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
Still top 5 after the losing streak. I'm not worried.
Back to Haren, does that mean you do not believe in his trademark second half swoon anymore?
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
Never did. It's been way exaggerated over the years.
Carl (Relocated to Boston)
You had Crawford at 67 in your last ranks. He's obviously made some changes recently. I know its a tough question, but where do you think you have him now.
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
Let's see how he does over more than just two games... two games incidentally, when the pen was just serving up hittable pitches. I'm optimistic, but it's way too soon to release the patient from the hospital.
Max (Concord, CA)
AJ, just because stats and historical numbers dictate a player will "fall back", doesn't mean it's actually going to happen. Are you always going to play the percentages and go the safer route, or would taking a gamble be a better strategy?
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
Max, you must be new to this chat... I'd say I'm accused far more often of ignoring the track record. LOL. Everyone has their own risk tolerance levels, and a lot of those choices depend on where you are int he standings...
Eric Young Jr was called up-- thoughts?
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
Love the speed. Makes a lot more sense as a potential leadoff hitter than Seth Smith.
James Shields (TB)
I finish as a top ___ pitcher?
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
I'd say top 20.
AJ Mass (12:02 PM)
That's the whistle, gang... gotta run, but I do my best to answer the Twitter questions that come my way... might be a tad slow with the 3-day weekend, though, so bear with me. Until next week then, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
