Andy Katz (1:05 PM)
Here to chat for a few
So, who does Penn State hire?
Andy Katz (1:08 PM)
I originally thought Jeff Lebo. Now let's see if it's Everhart, Chambers or Jeter. Ed DeChellis probably did as well as you can there.
With all the attention at the U going to Al Golden and the Hurricanes Football team, what exactly is going on with Scott, Johnson, and the Canes Basketball team? Can Jim Larranaga turn them into an ACC contender in his first year?
Andy Katz (1:09 PM)
Frank Haith left an NCAA team for Larranaga based on what's left in the ACC. My picks for four and five in the ACC behind UNC, Duke and FSU are Miami and Virginia.
Andy, when/if could fans reasonably expect for Rutgers to get into Top 25 and NCAA's? It's tough being the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East.
Andy Katz (1:16 PM)
I do think Mike Rice will turn Rutgers into a highly competitive team in the Big East. He's recruiting well and his teams play extremely hard. It was the right hire at the right time.
Andy, As early as it is the Big 12 seems to be wide open this year who is your favorite to win the league and how do you see Iowa St doing this year? Thanks!!
Andy Katz (1:19 PM)
The Big 12 will be one of the toughest to handicap.I can make an argument for Missouri, Baylor and Texas A&M but I'd be a fool to discount Kansas -- even with the defections. Texas just lost too much to put as a favorite at this point.
Where do you expect Andre Drummond to end up? Will he be a Husky?
Andy Katz (1:22 PM)
I'm not tracking this daily. But I do know one theory locally is that if he goes to college he goes to UConn if he goes for a prep year then he'll go to the NBA draft when he's eligible. UConn is still holding out hope it can land him for this fall. But that seems like a reach at this point.
Pete (Lynbrook, NY)
Andy, Whats the lastest word with the eligibility of Mo Harkless at St. Johns ? It seems pretty clear and simple to me he should be able to play, but the news is taking a long time, whats the story ?
Andy Katz (1:26 PM)
St. John's says it's working with the NCAA on proving that Hicks wasn't Harkless' coach, but rather an administrator. This is the kind of thing where someone gets dinged but the player doesn't end up being ineligible at the school (games or some minor penalty). This is one of the first cases for the Basketball Focus Group. I'll be interested to see how they handle the interpretation.
Hi Andy, who wins the A-10 this year?
Andy Katz (1:30 PM)
Geoff (Rochester, NY)
Andy - Love your work. Any chance that St. Bonaventure makes the NCAA tournament in Andrew Nicholson's final season? It looks like they have a pretty solid recruiting class to lengthen the bench.
Andy Katz (1:32 PM)
I don't have the Bonnies on the radar now. But it's June! The A-10 is wide open below Xavier so anything is possible.
When will the big ten release upcoming basketball schedules?
Andy Katz (1:33 PM)
Those are usually released in the summer. The Big East is always last, sometime in September.
Jackson Miller (Georgia )
Who will when Kentucky or North Carolina?
Andy Katz (1:33 PM)
The game is in Lexington. But UNC will be more experienced and talented at that juncture. I'll go with the Heels.
JE Salukil4ever (Illinois)
Will Bruce Weber ever get U of I to a top 15 program? if not will Jerrance Howard get a shot to be the head coach there?
Andy Katz (1:35 PM)
Well, the Illini were in the title game in 2005. So it's more than possible. Weber has a new boss. But I don't see a change. Weber is one of the good guys in the game. No need for a change now.
jordan kile (senatobia mississippi)
Is memphis tigers a top 10 team and a natioal championship team to
Andy Katz (1:36 PM)
Yes. The Tigers are a top 15 team, maybe higher potentially. Will they win the national title? I'd be very surprised. But I didn't have Butler or UConn in the title game last June, either.
Do you think at some point the NCAA either allow players to go pro out of HS or have to wait until junior year - or something like that? The current system is killing the game and making a mockery of student-athletes. How is it good for college basketball?
Andy Katz (1:38 PM)
Unfortunately there seems to be a theory that the NCAA controls the early entry rule. It doesn't. The NBA decides if a player can go straight out of high school or if he has to wait three years once he matriculates (like baseball). If the NBA wants to push for this during the CBA negotiations then it could occur, only if the NBAPA gets something in return.
Hey Andy. How much help do you think Arkansas' incoming freshmen will help, out of the gate, this coming year? Tournament bid? Deep run?
Andy Katz (1:39 PM)
The Hogs better get a lot of help from that class. It has been billed as one of the best classes Arkansas has had in years (sans the occasional pro like Joe Johnson). If Mike Anderson can get this group to adapt to his system then it has a chance to be a second-place SEC West team behind Alabama.
Chris (Gaithersburg, Md)
Hey Andy, throw the Terps a bone and answer a question please...Do the Terps finish in the top of the ACC and do we get in the Tourney this year?
Andy Katz (1:40 PM)
Not this season. Maryland will be in the bottom third of the ACC. But I do see Turgeon and staff turning the program into a consistent grinder in the ACC.
Andy, thanks for the chat. Harvard -- what could they accomplish in the NCAA tournament in the next couple of year (assuming no early entries to the NBA draft - mild sarcasm intended)
Andy Katz (1:40 PM)
Harvard should win the Ivy and reach the NCAAs. Winning a game in the NCAAs is within reach. I don't see much more than that.
Do you think the SEC changes from a two division conference this year?
Andy Katz (1:44 PM)
I hope so. The vote from the coaches is going on today. Presidents and ADs will have to react accordingly. The SEC East is too dominant and that isn't going to change anytime soon. The West teams are at a disadvantage only playing them once. The proof is clear -- win the West guarantees you nothing. Alabama didn't get a bid in large part because of its schedule.
Andy Katz (1:44 PM)
Thanks for the questions. Enjoy the last few weeks of spring!
