Klaw (2:02 PM)
OK, I have an hour before I'm getting kicked out of this conference room, so let's roll.
Justin (Chicago)
Lazy Monday, huh Klaw?
Klaw (2:02 PM)
I need sleep.
Bill the Cat (Bpthttt!)
If you were in the front office of a team and signed Alex Meyer do you try to clean up his mechanics or let him continue with this, uh, motion?
Klaw (2:03 PM)
I wouldn't mind trying to very slightly raise that arm slot. I do think some of his motion is a function of growing into his body - he's still kind of gawky.
Kevin (Troy, NY)
Lots of mocks saying Jungmann to the Astros at 11...is this just over-reliance on geography or is there something there?
Klaw (2:03 PM)
He's a possibility, but I believe they will get someone they like better, such as Lindor or Meyer.
Kevin (San Diego)
Keith, if the Pads pop Spangenberg will they still be getting a better player than Whitson was last year?
Klaw (2:04 PM)
I don't think so. But they'll get him signed, which is what counts.
Casey (PHX)
Never wanted a more accurate mock draft as a D-Backs fan. Can they actually get Bauer and Hultzen?
Klaw (2:04 PM)
Right now it looks like they get Bauer and one of Hultzen/Bundy. You couldn't ask for much more.
Titto (Tampa)
Bell to the Rays? Your thoughts?
Klaw (2:05 PM)
I think that's an outside shot. They like him - that much is certain. He's going to be a tough sign, maybe unsignable (but I doubt that), and while I see the appeal in taking him and offering him take-it-or-leave-it money, they can't afford to leave a bunch of picks unsigned, especially not the first one with the highest expected value.
Derek Cox (South Byron)
What are the chances of javier baez sticking at SS?
Klaw (2:05 PM)
I think he goes to 3b.
Klaw (2:07 PM)
Have heard today both Tyler Goeddel and Dante Bichette Jr going in sandwich round.
Matt (Annapolis)
Are the O's really going to pull this cheap-skate crap again this year?
Klaw (2:08 PM)
By taking a two-sport guy who'll probably get a $5-6 million deal? That's "cheap-skate crap?" If you're going to make this complaint, don't you at least have to find out what the player wants first?
brad (farmington)
I'm very interested in your opinion of the best places to eat when you're visiting the 06010.
Klaw (2:08 PM)
I had excellent BBQ brisket at Flaggstead last night.
Brian (Ohio)
What are the chances the Indians reach for a HS pitcher at 8 if A. Bradley and Bundy are off the board?
Klaw (2:09 PM)
I keep hearing most likely college arm.
Eddie (Los Altos, CA)
I saw that Henry Owens was not in your final mock. How far does he fall? From what I have read, people seem to think there is not much projection with him, but what is your take?
Klaw (2:10 PM)
Also sandwich round on him. Only two or three teams seem to be on him at all in the first.
Jamie (Canada)
Do you subscribe to Bowden's theory that it's better to take a hitter than a pitcher with one of the top picks?
Klaw (2:10 PM)
No.
David (Seattle)
Nimmo to the A's, make sense?
Klaw (2:10 PM)
No.
Chet (LA)
Keith, will CJ Cron be able to stay at 1B, or is he going to be a move to DH candidate? Thanks.
Klaw (2:10 PM)
I think he's a move to DH candidate. Already had a minor knee issue and now the labrum issue. And he's really big.
Gus (Durham)
Can you do anything to put my anxiety about the Mariners and Lindor to rest?
Klaw (2:11 PM)
All I can tell you is that every source with a connection to the M's is saying they take Rendon. The Lindor stuff all seems to emanate from one level away (or more).
Klaw (2:12 PM)
And what I'm saying is that I have to factor that into my predictions - how close is the source to the situation.
Brandon (Rochester NY )
Why are there always trends where countless draft sites link catchers to Boston. Since 2004 the earliest is Jonathon Egan in the second round. I just don't buy into the notion that Hedges or Swihart (who profiles as an OF) is the right idea.
Klaw (2:12 PM)
Swihart doesn't profile as an OF. Catcher for me, 3B for some, but OF is awfully pessimistic. But there's also a lot of those secondhand rumors linking them to catching because everyone knows their system lacks it. Except that they don't draft like that.
Tad (Bakersfield, CA)
Knowing that Cron will have a difficult (at best) time handling 1B, why would the Rockies be all that interested? They do realize they play in the NL right?
Klaw (2:14 PM)
I actually heard after posting that they're not. Apparently they're befuddled why everyone keeps linking them to Cron (myself included).
Scrapper (Illinois)
Scale of 1-10: How strong is this draft at the top?Scale of 1-10: How deep is this draft overall?
Klaw (2:14 PM)
I've only been in ten drafts, but this is the strongest or second-strongest at the top, and it's the deepest.
Brian (NJ)
What do you think the odds of someone not currently in your top 100 being drafted in the 1st round are?
Klaw (2:16 PM)
You know, I hope it's at least one of the 130 or so guys I've written up - could see a Bichette sneaking in there, maybe Jerez, although I doubt it. If there's a non-100 guy going in the first I haven't heard about him.
Dave (PA)
What do you think of Trevor Story and Andrew Susac? And do you think the Phillies could grab either of them at 39th?
Klaw (2:18 PM)
Story scares me - I don't know if he'll hit. Might be Adam Everett. Like Susac a lot but he'd be an over slot guy at 39 and they rarely go much over slot. More likely they take a prep player with upside like a Goetzman.
Mike (NY)
Can you see anyone other than Boston and Detriot taking a chance on Bell?
Klaw (2:18 PM)
Someone brought up Tampa. Texas wouldn't shock me.
Andrew Z. (Struthers, OH)
You say that the Indians are likely to select a collegiate pitcher at 8. That being said, of the players who will be available, who has the highest upside?
Klaw (2:18 PM)
Upside? Meyer. Not hearing him with Cleveland though.
Brian (Ohio)
Thanks for answering my question Keith...eat an avacado today, it will help you sleep.
Klaw (2:19 PM)
Nothing will help me sleep more than the end of round one.
casey (boston,ma)
Where do you see a kid like Pat Connaughton sliding to since it seems he'll be playing basketball at Notre Dame
Klaw (2:19 PM)
College guy by all accounts - no one buys the arm action and the offspeed stuff wasn't good all spring.
josh f (Silver Spring, MD)
If your current mock holds, who are the best players available at the top of the sandwich round for the Nats?
Klaw (2:20 PM)
Signability guys like Bell, Hedges (I have Ross with San Diego now, late change), Swihart. Anthony Meo. Comer. Goeddel. Lot of talent there.
Josh (NY)
Were there any rumblings about Culver/Simpson getting popped in the 1st last year on draft day before it happened or does a surprise like that usually just spring up at the time of the pick (thus the surprise)?
Klaw (2:21 PM)
Both surprises, although I heard after the fact from a source who knew the Culver/Yanks rumor and dismissed it (then apologized to me for not passing it along).
Norman (NY)
Seeing how Jungmann has completely dominated at the college level what knocks are there on him that will let him fall to the Brewers and is there any fear that he could be the next Eric Arnett?
Klaw (2:22 PM)
Arnett was worked much harder in college - like, Bauer-hard - and had no track record. Plus I understand the Brewers altered his mechanics in pro ball. So I wouldn't worry about that with Jungmann assuming they leave him alone.
Rick (Livermore)
Hey Klaw, wrote you an email last week on where you would rank the top college guys with respect to your top prospect list? Comparing cole, rendon, bauer to trout, harper montero any thoughts? Also Christian Lopes definitely going to college or could be a late first rounder??
Klaw (2:22 PM)
I'd take Trout or Harper over anyone in this group.
Brian (VA)
I coached George Springer back when he was playing AAU ball. As far as make-up, I'm not sure you could have a better prospect. He's also a five-tool player who put up big numbers each year in college and during summer ball. Is the "back-side collapse" that bad?
Klaw (2:23 PM)
Depends on whom you ask. Some say yes, it's unfixable. Others say it can be lessened and the tools are too good to pass up. If he goes 18 to Oakland it's a good pick for them, since they rarely get to draft a guy with that kind of physical ability.
Josh (Tampa)
What is the deal with Vogelbach? Is he stuck at 1b or DH for life? I saw a few mocks with him going 30-40. That seems high for a guy with no glove...
Klaw (2:24 PM)
DH only. I mean, there's big, like Kevin Cron, and there's fat, like Vogelbach. That's just not a baseball body - he had to lose 30 pounds just to get back on the map this spring. But he can hit a baseball a long way.
Stephen (Texas)
I'll be in the Phoenix area(Chandler) for 2 months with work over the summer. Can you give me a couple of food destination points worth checking out?
Klaw (2:25 PM)
Email me via my ESPN mailbag and I'll give you a list - too much for the chat
Matt L (RI)
Lots of speculation with the BoSox at 26, especially with high upside high schoolers. Which high school player in the most likely to the Sox at this spot, or first round for that matter?
Klaw (2:25 PM)
Nothing is definite but I keep hearing signable college players there with money spent after the first round.
Jason (St Louis)
What's the latest on Purke? Undrafted?
Klaw (2:27 PM)
He'll get drafted. I'm guessing tomorrow, but could go tonight to a team with extra picks.
Tim (Washington)
Can Matt Davidson's bat be above-average and can he stick at 3rd?
Klaw (2:28 PM)
Yes on both.
Joe (College Park, MD)
Do you get tired of people doubting Cole based on his college stats?
Klaw (2:29 PM)
Yes, because having worked a lot with college stats I know their limitations. And it's not like he's calling his own game, either.
Dave (NY)
Other than Cole does Alex Meyer have the best stuff in this draft?
Klaw (2:29 PM)
College ranks, yes. Bundy is in that conversation if we include HSers.
Braden (Toronto)
Talk me into Levi Michael to the Jays at #21. I have visions of Russ Adams 2.0
Klaw (2:30 PM)
Get glasses. Or new medication. We took Adams because the GM ignored every scout in the room who told him Adams couldn't play shortstop. Michael, on the other hand, can play shortstop (and is a better runner, has a better eye, and is only 20).
Jon (NYC)
Would getting Matt Barnes at 13 be something of a best case scenario for the Mets? Is it fair to see that Barnes has a higher ceiling than Jungmann but Jungmann has higher probability?
Klaw (2:30 PM)
Yes. Still hearing Barnes maybe at 10 or 11 and I wouldn't rule out 8, but I feel like he gets to 13.
Ben (OKC)
Any chance that Kolten Wong slips to the Twins?
Klaw (2:31 PM)
If the Rockies take Michael, and the Rays go upside at 24, which I'd originally heard they were disinclined to do, then Wong could slide to the Twins.
Anthony (NYC)
I can't find this anywhere - is the sandwich round tonight?
Klaw (2:31 PM)
Yes, first and sandwich.
Klaw (2:32 PM)
Also known in New Jersey as the "sangwich" round.
HBG (NYC)
How much access to a player's medicals to teams get prior to the draft? Do they get reports from personal/team physicians? Can they bring the player in for an examination by their own doctor?
Klaw (2:32 PM)
Depends on the player/adviser but all players at least submit medical reports to the MLB scouting bureau. Doctor exams are rare before the draft but almost obligatory before the signing deadline.
Jeff (Atlanta, GA)
So if you believe Bauer is "overworked," isn't he a risky pick that high in the draft?
Klaw (2:33 PM)
In my mind, yes. That's not a universal opinion.
Bret (Toronto)
Does Jackie Bradley Jr. get drafted tonight? Hear any teams on him?
Klaw (2:33 PM)
Late first/sandwich wouldn't surprise me.
Nathan (Las Vegas)
Why isn't Bubba this year's Donovan Tate?
Klaw (2:35 PM)
Because Bubba can hit a fastball and Tate couldn't.
Nick (Long Island)
Where do you see Tyler Beede getting drafted? Is he signable?
Klaw (2:35 PM)
I'd say 90% of sources think he has a deal with somebody.
Snakes (Philly)
Who are you most in the minority on as compared ti most scouts (ie you are way higher or lower on the player than most)
Klaw (2:35 PM)
I'm higher on Meo and Swihart. I'm low on Tyler Anderson and Wong.
Nick (Long Island)
Yes or no, do you think Sonny Gray will stay as a starter long term?
Klaw (2:36 PM)
Yes. Also not a universal opinion.
Tom (Los Angeles)
So does Rendon project as Zimmerman at his peak?
Klaw (2:36 PM)
Less power than Zimmerman has. But Zim had poor plate discipline (and a big leak in his swing/stance) out of college, while Rendon has a great eye and better balance.
Mike (San Diego)
When you're this busy, do you ever resort to eating fast food? If so, what's your go-to place?
Klaw (2:37 PM)
Had In-n-Out twice last week. Learning you could order the fries "well done" was life-altering.
Jeff (San Francisco)
Your thoughts on the Giants at the end of the first round? All mock drafts I have seen (yours included) have them going with local pitching. Is that a best available guy situation or someone that they have had the chance to see more often and thus liking that person more than someone on the other side of the country?
Klaw (2:38 PM)
They scout the country like everyone else but there happen to be two great local pitchers this year. Might just have had some extra looks early when the weather was bad.
Scott (MD)
Klaw, I dont get the reasoning, Bundy is getting graded much higher by many scouts as well as you as the best HS pitcher in the draft so why are the O's linked/drafting another Hs Pitcher in Bradley?
Klaw (2:38 PM)
I think I have Bundy 4th on my ranking and Archie 5th.
Tim (Arizona)
Was your mock draft based on who you think they will take or who you think that should take?
Klaw (2:38 PM)
Who I think they will take based on conversations with sources.
Sandwich (eater)
If the sandwich round actually included sandwiches what would be your first pick>?
Klaw (2:39 PM)
Hm. Fried shrimp po' boy. I'd go over slot for that one.
Brian Cashman (NYC)
I'm just going to sit and twiddle my thumbs for most of the day.
Klaw (2:39 PM)
At least you pick today. The Tigers have the day off.
Drew Plommer (Seattle)
Could Seattle have the best up side infield in all of the MLB if they get Rendon.1B Justin Smoak age 24, AVG. .250, 10 HR, 34 RBIs2B Dustin Ackley age 23, AVG. .294, OPS .900, 8 HR, 47 BBSS Nick Franklin age 203B Anthony Rendon age 21Your thoughts on the potential of the mariners infield.
Klaw (2:40 PM)
Ackley to LF, Franklin to 2b.
Dave (San Diego)
Is Sonny Gray still in San Diego's mix?
Klaw (2:40 PM)
I keep hearing no.
@klawthoughts (Klaw's alter ego)
Will Lindor hit for any power?
Klaw (2:40 PM)
Maybe future grade 45. I can't see him being an above-average power guy.
Ian (Ok)
Any chance Twins take Nimmo?
Klaw (2:41 PM)
Haven't heard that. Mets, Red Sox, Rangers particularly on him. Rays somewhat.
Nick (NJ)
You have said Mets want pitching but yet you have them passing Gray. Do they just not like him or something?
Klaw (2:41 PM)
I believe they view him as a future reliever.
Joe C (San Jose)
Who are you hearing takes Goeddel in sandwich round? Yankees, Rays?
Klaw (2:42 PM)
I think he goes before the Yanks at 51.
Nick (Long Island)
Any more adjustments to your mock in the works right now?
Klaw (2:42 PM)
I've already changed pick 25 (Padres) since we started.
Klaw (2:42 PM)
But so far that's it.
Jonathan (DC)
Javier baez put up insane numbers in high school. Quick mover and max homeruns you think he could hit?
Klaw (2:43 PM)
They played a really sketchy schedule, though. High school numbers make college numbers look definitive. Not a quick mover to me but 30+ HR power easy.
HBG (NYC)
Where can we follow you tonight - just online (ESPN.com, Twitter) or are you getting camera time?
Klaw (2:43 PM)
Online primarily. Supposed to be on Sportscenter between 7:30 and 8 pm EDT. Tomorrow night we're doing a Sportscenter draft special at 9 pm EDT. Will tweet any other TV hits as they come up.
Aron (STL)
Klaw, Is Norris worth the reported 3.9mil he's asking?
Klaw (2:44 PM)
In my opinion, no. Not as good as Matzek was at the same age.
mark (CA)
what will the marlins focus on early
Klaw (2:45 PM)
Heard they really want a bat in round one, and are open to a college bat. Last time they did that in the first round was Kotsay in '96.
Joe (Cleveland)
What players have you heard linked to the Indians other than the college arms?
Klaw (2:45 PM)
Joe Ross, but I doubt they do that now. Maybe Lindor.
Chris (Alabama)
Are you hearing Nimmo connected to the Braves at all? I'm hoping they can get a nice bat out of their first rounder. Are there better options available there (hitters)?
Klaw (2:46 PM)
No. Slot guys only.
Nick (Long Island)
Any chance Nimmo makes it to the Mets at 44?
Klaw (2:47 PM)
I no longer think so.
Sean (Los Angeles)
Keith - just want to thank you for getting me more into the draft process. I am a huge baseball fan and loved reading you for your opinions on today's players, and really enjoyed your writing. As you wrote more and more about prospects, naturally I became more and more interested. And now today, I am totally jazzed, whereas a few years ago, I would barely have noticed. So... thanks.
Klaw (2:48 PM)
You're welcome - I'm glad to hear it. I think proselytizing about the value of this event is a big part of my job, not just for selfish reasons but because I think the sport is better off if this becomes a more popular day.
Jim (SFran)
Any catchers linked to the Giants?
Klaw (2:48 PM)
Heard some Susac rumors but even as I wrote them I kind of snarked at myself to writing them.
hector (chicago)
i know its way to early but will you post a mini mock draft for '12?if the nfl can do it why cant we do it.........
Klaw (2:49 PM)
Well, we don't even know the order yet. But I also don't do mocks before about 3 weeks out because the information is too vague.
Tucker (Somerville)
How many teams do you see spending over $10M on this draft given the impending CBA changes? Could it be more than Pirates, Diamondbacks, Rays and Red Sox?
Klaw (2:49 PM)
Blue Jays.
Fat Matt (Pearl River, NY )
Long suffering Met fans have put our minds together and come to a consesnsus that we want Taylor Guerrieri? Can you give us a quick scouting report and a comparable major league pitcher?
Klaw (2:50 PM)
Big fastball, plus curveball, good body, needs some minor cleanup, command below average, makeup questions. Potential #1-2 starter.
Rick (New England)
Where do you think Tyler Beede will end up being drafted?
Klaw (2:50 PM)
Sandwich/second.
Eric (Minnesota)
Think the Twins can get Chafin at 30? or is he to much of a medical risk to take that high?
Klaw (2:50 PM)
Haven't heard him there. Only club in first I've heard is Toronto, and they might get him at 35.
Zak (Jersey)
Will Jerez be around for the Mets at 44? If so, can we pencil that in now?
Klaw (2:51 PM)
Heard him with other clubs there including Red Sox. He scares me. I don't generally like judging ages off looks - I still get carded occasionally - but if he turned out to be 23 I wouldn't call myself surprised.
Tom (NJ)
Fastest 1st rounder to the majors is...?
Klaw (2:52 PM)
I think you put Bauer right in AA and let him go.
Frank (Cinnaminson nj)
Where do you think Kevin Komer will end up being drafted?
Klaw (2:52 PM)
With seven-figure price tag I think he slides to third or fourth round and gets paid.
bubblesdachimp (DC)
As a gamecock alumn i am wondering about Michael Roth. Where do you see him going?
Klaw (2:52 PM)
Late day two or even day three. Nice college pitcher but barely a pro prospect at all.
Justin (Pittsburgh)
Keith, when you quote "scouts" as sources are you actually talking to scouts personally, or are relaying information from front office types, agents, etc on what scouts are saying?
Klaw (2:53 PM)
I talk to scouts personally, as well as execs, players, agents, etc.
Tom (Seattle)
Any word on where Blake Snell might go?
Klaw (2:53 PM)
Have heard sandwich/second.
Jason (Jacksonville)
You seemed lower than most on Bauer until recently. Why the change in opinion?
Klaw (2:53 PM)
Saw easily his worst outing stuff-wise of the season. Saw him again and he was substantially better - I mean higher grades on all three pitches.
Evan (WV)
Why is Pittsburgh so set on Cole? Why not take Bauer, who seems to better off at this point?
Klaw (2:54 PM)
Because the question isn't who's better today, but who'll provide more value over the first six years of his major league career. If you put both kids in the majors tonight, I'd guess Bauer has the better rest of the season. But I think Cole has much more value over the long term.
Dustin (Seattle)
Klaw... Play along with me.. You are in charge of the M's draft pick. Cole is off the board at 1. Do you take Starling or go safe with Rendon?
Klaw (2:55 PM)
I'm 50/50. Probably Rendon, but Starling is fully justifiable.
Carlos (Los Angeles,CA)
Who are the dodgers looking at?
Klaw (2:55 PM)
I think they may do a deal with Chris Reed, LHP at Stanford. Hoping they put him in the rotation.
Steve (Detroit)
Keith, when are the grades going to be on the player profiles?
Klaw (2:55 PM)
I'm not doing grades this year.
Joe (Cleveland)
Bundy to the Indians? Any chance?
Klaw (2:56 PM)
No, don't think so.
Kevin (San Diego)
Any chance Bradley get to 10? And would the Pads really consider him there with the price tag?
Klaw (2:56 PM)
Seems like he goes 4 now.
Andrew (Centereach, NY)
Would Delmonico rank higher if he was a lock to stay behind the plate
Klaw (2:56 PM)
Yes. Also has had some injuries. I believe he's eligible again in '13.
Andrew Z. (Struthers, OH)
Your take on Jed Bradley's potential/future ceiling?
Klaw (2:57 PM)
If you can find him a breaking ball - try a true CB, or even a cutter - there's a #2 starter in there. But the risk is right now he's basically FB-CH.
Chris (Boston)
I don't know if Reed fits in the Dodgers rotation. Kershaw/Billingsley/Lee/Webster/Eovaldi/De la Rosa/Miller
Klaw (2:57 PM)
Yes, because those guys will all stay healthy and reach expectations. Forever.
William (Maryland)
Do you really believe that the Nationals would pass on Hultzen if he's there at 6? (He's a hometown kid and his brother is also an intern for the nationals.)
Klaw (2:58 PM)
You don't get extra points for winning with local players.
bubblesdachimp (DC)
if the Cubs get Bubba is he instantly their best prospect
Klaw (2:58 PM)
Yes. But that would be true of most clubs.
Aron (STL)
Klaw i know you have the Cardinals pegged for a prep arm but what if a legit college hitter falls in their lap like Wallace or Cox had in the past?
Klaw (2:59 PM)
I believe they told a local paper this morning they wanted a bat - not sure if that's overall, or if it's assuming the prep arms they like are gone. But bear in mind my projection may be way off there.
Dave (Palo Alto)
You going to do a Kiper and rate teams on their draft?
Klaw (3:00 PM)
I'll do a recap tonight, but I don't rate or grade like that. One, they still have to sign their players. And two, putting grades on an MLB draft right away feels very premature.
Carlos (Los Angeles,CA)
If Reed doesn't end up with the dodgers. Do you think Logan will go for another high school pitcher?
Klaw (3:00 PM)
Heard backup plans are Anderson and Stephenson, more likely Anderson.
Klaw (3:00 PM)
OK I need to wrap this up. I will chat again at some point tomorrow to talk about everything I got wrong tonight!
