Dan Rafael (12:00 PM)
Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to our weekly chat! There are a ton of news stories posted, my blog interview with Mike Tyson, who goes into the Hall of Fame on Sunday, and a big notebook that should be posted shortly. So we have much to discuss. Let's get to it.
rob(jersey) [via mobile]
If JCC Jr./Cotto do fight next spring, what kind of PPV#'s would you anticipate?
Dan Rafael (12:01 PM)
If that fight is made, I suspect it would be very well on PPV. An exact number? Really no idea, but I could see it doing over 300,000.
Kevin (London, UK)
Hoping this doesn't become the 'Mayweather Chat', but it has to be asked. Is Ortiz a credible opponent? And does he stand a realistic chance?
Dan Rafael (12:02 PM)
If Floyd is not facing Pacquiao then I view Ortiz as a credible opponent. Absolutely. Based on his win over Berto, Ortiz is widely viewed as the next-best active welter behind Pacquiao with Mayweather coming off a long stretch of inactivity.
Robert (Dayton)
What's the over/under on the number of optional title defenses Sulaiman will let Chavez make before mandating a fight with Rubio or Martinez? I'm thinking around 6.
Dan Rafael (12:03 PM)
100.
Harold (Clothier WV)
King Freak, thanks for the Tyson interview, would love to sit with him for a few hours and listen to the tales of his relationship with Cus D'Amato. Priceless!
Dan Rafael (12:04 PM)
Mike was really on fire when we were talking. He was excited talking about the old days but also very emotional. He broke up so badly at one point, he asked if I could just call him back in a little while, so the interview was really two parts with a short break in between.
Miguel (Mexico)
I just hope to see Pretty Boy Floyd against Ortiz and not Money Mayweather, I believe its going to be a great fight
Dan Rafael (12:04 PM)
I hope you are right.
Van (Phoenix)
If both Pacquiao and Mayweather win their fights, how soon could we see them finally GET IT ON!?
Dan Rafael (12:06 PM)
IF (I SAID IF IF IF IF) the fight is going to happen, and they both win their fall fights, I would envision them meeting in early May 2012. That is the obvious date and they will have basically wiped out all the notable opponents other than each other.
Cash strapped in Fl (Magate, Fl)
Lots of fight coming up in July, August September and I can't pay fo both HBO & Showtime. What fights ae you lookng foward to on which outlet?
Dan Rafael (12:07 PM)
There are some good ones. I look forward to Klitschko-Haye on HBO and Rios-Antillon (a guaranteed war) on Showtime. I am very much looking forward to Khan-Judah on July 23 on HBO. And, if it gets done, Guerrero-Maidana on Aug. 27 on HBO is another good one.
Justin (Boston)
You buying into the theory that Ortiz is just prep for Pac?
Dan Rafael (12:07 PM)
I wouldn't say "just" but obviously when you pick a fast southpaw with power ahead of a possible Pacquiao fight it makes sense.
Julio (DFW)
Great interview with Iron Mike. Its hard for me to believe that kids growing up today will remember Tyson as a nice guy funny actor, rather than the relentless aggressor he was in the ring.
Dan Rafael (12:07 PM)
You're right. I feel old.
Dan Rafael (12:08 PM)
If you have not read my interview with Mike Tyson, here it is: http://espn.go.com/sports/boxing/blog/_/name/rafael_dan/id/6648044/mike-tyson-reflects-hof-career
Kevin (London, UK)
From a British point of view, how do you rate Ryan Rhodes against Canelo and also Matthew Macklin against Felix Sturm?
Dan Rafael (12:09 PM)
Rhodes is a serious opponent and it's a real fight IMO. I spoke to Rhodes this week and he sounds quite excited and confident for the fight. He's been around, he's got a lot of experience and he said going to Mexico was no big deal. Macklin is a legit opponent too for Sturm, although Sturm's jab is sooooo good it's hard to get through against him.
David (Cape Canaveral)
Danimal, THANKS for a GREAT TYSON interview!!!!!
Dan Rafael (12:10 PM)
Thanks. Was great to talk to Mike.
Julio (DFW)
Danimal,What is the news from Arum on a Salido/Lopez rematch? Heard october. any truth to this?
Dan Rafael (12:10 PM)
Nothing solid at all. Salido is going to fight in Mexico next month first and then they will talk about putting together a rematch.
andrew f. (new york)
I'm pretty stoked for the Mayweather-Ortiz fight. 16 month layoff, 10 year age difference, Ortiz is bigger, stronger, tougher, has decent speed, accurate punches and gets hit a lot. On paper, is this one of the best matchups Mayweather has ever been in from an entertainment standpoint?
Dan Rafael (12:11 PM)
It's up there.
Jonathan (Atlanta)
Dan, a freak can't lie, I'm pretty jealous about that pic with Rachel Cordingly.
Dan Rafael (12:11 PM)
As you should be Freak! :)
Leo (Charlotte, NC)
who is Marquez Fighting in July?
Dan Rafael (12:11 PM)
Likar Ramos. I have a section about it in my notebook today that you can read when it is posted.
Desmond (San Diego)
Quick question Danomite. Was it just me that witnessed a certain determination and grit from Ortiz that will make him a real challenge for May?
Dan Rafael (12:12 PM)
He sure showed that against Berto. I think winning the way he did and coming through those rough moments and winning the belt, will dramatically increase Ortiz's confidence too.
Patrick (Mexico)
I will go out on a limb: I like Vic in that fight. Ortiz will snatch the 0!
David (Cape Canaveral)
DTM, tell us did YOU have a few emotional moments yourself when Mike was getting a little broken up? You'd have to get a little bit wouldn't ya'....I would.
Dan Rafael (12:13 PM)
I didn't actually. Not the first time I have interviewed an emotional subject. You get used to it.
Jackson (IA)
Hey Dan...watching Berto/Ortiz, I kept noticing that Ortiz would dive in to throw punches from a distance. REALLY susceptible to catching something walking in. I see a Floyd vs Hatton ending to this one...thoughts?
Dan Rafael (12:13 PM)
I think that is a very good possibility unless Victor does something to work on that flaw.
Sam (London)
Dan, how do you like Chavez against those three opponents mentioned - Rubio, Manfredo and Barker?
Dan Rafael (12:14 PM)
Within Top Rank, they prefer Barker because they think he is the easiest. They view Rubio as the toughest.
Rick (Marina, Ca)
RIP El Chicanito Hernandez
Dan Rafael (12:15 PM)
Exactly. Just a great, humble, friendly guy.
Rick (Modesto)
How hard was it for you to put Chavez Jr in your top 10 middleweight rankings?
Dan Rafael (12:15 PM)
Not hard at all. The kid earned it.
chris (stillwater)
When will we start gettin an idea on undrecards for mayweather and pacquiao"s ppvs?
Dan Rafael (12:16 PM)
They are working on it. Arum told me Mikey Garcia is likely to be on the Pacquiao undercard. Jorge Arce could also make his first defense on that card as well. Golden Boy could have Canelo fight the same night as Mayweather from another site and have the PPV a split site card.
Ryan (Youngstown)
Who handles pressure better in big moments: Oliver McCall or LeBron James?
Dan Rafael (12:17 PM)
So far, McCall, but there are still games left in the Finals.
Boxing Newbie (Hong Kong)
I would imagine you must have interviewed Tyson countless times, I was just wondering when you interview him, are you surprised with the stories that he shared, I mean, by now you must have heard many stories about him (and with others) but he always seems to be able to come up with new stuff, the man is always evolving.
Dan Rafael (12:17 PM)
I have interviewed Tyson MANY times but he does surprise me with stuff still. I had never heard that Holmes-Ali story before the other day. He has a lot of memories.
steven (London)
whats your opinion on the Khan-Sky situation, and do you know anything about it? plz dont avoid this question because you do a bit of work for sky..Why are they blocking certain fighters from his undercards and will GBP do something about it?
Dan Rafael (12:19 PM)
First, I don't work for Sky. I work for ESPN. I am a contrubutor to a Sky program, which I enjoy doing. That said, I have no idea why Sky is not interested in Khan-Judah. That is a serious fight. I think the main issue is that members of the Khan team and the honchos at Sky just mix like oil and water for some reason. Ultimately, Khan is a young star and he needs Sky and Sky will need him if it wants to put on big PPVs.
OttawaJamesa (Ottawa (duh))
Hey Danomighty - Ortiz KO - Round 7 calling my shot now!
Julio (DFW)
Seems like no Maidana, Guerrero, Judah, Pacquiao, Mayweather or Khan for Bradley. Truly an honer graduate of the Winky Wright school of boxing business.
Dan Rafael (12:20 PM)
Bradley played a game of musical chairs and he lost. Everyone has a dance partner. Even Berto probably winds up facing Zaveck in the fall.
Chris D. (Chicago)
I think Ortiz's passion will work against him against Mayweather. He showed heart with Berto, who was uncannily hittable, but he seems to get frustrated when things don't go his way. Mayweather will break him down mentally, if not physically.
Jessie (Elk Grove)
After his win on Saturday, Jr got a lot of heat from media and fans about how good he really is or who he beat. We know he is not going to be an all time great, or even great, but why cant we just accept him for what he is, a decent fighter who puTs on really good fights. I would rather watch a Jr fight over a fight like Bradely vs Alexander, two guys who are supposed to be super skilled and talented, and the fight was ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Dan Rafael (12:22 PM)
That is an opinion I have heard a lot of and it has merit. As long as you watch Chavez fights and understand what he is, just relax and enjoy them. He's not a p4p guy, but he's usually fun to watch. What's wrong with that if he is matched right?
Jim (Diamond Bar)
Hey Dan, my first live fight will be Khan-Judah in Vegas. Is Mandalay Bay a good venue to watch a fight? Are the cheap seats decent?
Dan Rafael (12:22 PM)
Mandalay Bay is one of the best arenas ever built to watch a fight at.
Jose Sulaiman (Mexico)
I have decided the Freaks should have even more chats, therefore, I will sanction an Emeritas chat on Sundays and a Super chat on Wednesdays. For a small sanctioning fee, of course.
Matt (Naperville, IL)
Any chance we get Gamboa On the undercard for Chavez next fight if it's on Hbo?
Dan Rafael (12:23 PM)
Gamboa is supposed to be back on HBO in the main event of a BAD card Sept. 10.
Dylan (Ft. Collins, CO)
Can you share any part of Suliman's email of BBQ disgust?
Dan Rafael (12:23 PM)
I'm not going to do that, but let's just say Mauricio Sulaiman is a big fat baby.
Rags (NYC)
Any word on Seth Mitchell's return? I like him and want him to stay active.....
Dan Rafael (12:25 PM)
There's a chance he will be on HBO to open up the Guerrero-Maidana card on Aug. 27.
John (Orlando)
So with everyone tied up do you think Bradley sits out a whole year?
Dan Rafael (12:25 PM)
It's possible he won't fight for the rest of the year, which would be a shame. But if that happens, he did it to himself.
Dax (Pomona)
Any news from Mosley?
Dan Rafael (12:26 PM)
Top Rank declined its option on him and he is a free agent now.
Bing (Philly)
Isn't Bradley guaranteed 1.3 mill for his next fight regardless of opponent?
Dan Rafael (12:26 PM)
No. His opponent must be approved by HBO. And I believe the figure was $1.2 million.
Steve (NYC)
Why won't HBO or Showtime show heavyweights more often? Wasn't Aerola/ Vitali one of the highest rated HBO broadcasts?
Dan Rafael (12:27 PM)
Because the division stinks and there are very very few interesting heavyweights to watch.
jt$ (DC)
Have you ready Sugar Ray Leonard's new book yet? I'm dying to read it as it sounds like a real honest, hard hitting account of some mistakes he made, instead of a fluff piece.
Dan Rafael (12:28 PM)
I have not read it but plan to check it out.
Jesse (Montreal)
First they try to shake B-Hop for his trunks and now they are crying over a blog. The Sulaimans exemplify sleaziness. They are not afraid to stip a fighter of his belt....and his clothes
Tim (London)
Up until now it's seemed like the bosses at Sky were being relatively principled and the Khans' myopia and lack of experience in the boxing business were at the root of the problems but Sky passing on the Judah fight seems very odd. Should fighters just leave off forming their own promotional companies until they've reached the level of an Oscar or the Klitschkos or does it just depend how you do it?
Dan Rafael (12:29 PM)
Had Sky taken the Khan-Judah fight, Golden Boy would have handled most everything to put Sky at ease.
Matt (Naperville, IL)
If you had to guess, do you think Canelo's fight next week breaks Chavez Jr's ratings record?
Dan Rafael (12:30 PM)
The Chavez fight got a lot of hype because he was going for a belt, he was fighting in LA, his dad was in the news because of the HOF this week, so it had a lot going for it. Canelo's fight next week is not going to get that kind of media in the US, so I don't think it will match it.
Power Pellets (Las Vegas)
Rank these in order of biggest laughs. David Haye Twitter Blocking, Shannon Briggs Twitter Slander, Sulaiman E-mail, Bob Arum Middle Finger, Phone calls from Uncle Lou.
Dan Rafael (12:31 PM)
Lou's rants, Arum's finger, Sulaiman's email, Haye's nonsense and Briggs' slander.
Joe (Floral Park, NY)
If Margarito remains injured, who will Cotto fight in the fall?
Dan Rafael (12:31 PM)
Top Rank is pretty confident that Margarito will be OK to go Dec. 3, the date they are holding for Cotto-Margarito 2. If he is not, I think they would probably try to line up Cintron.
Tim (Denver)
I would think Mosley's career or at least as a top prize fighter is over. Now that we know he wanted to quit because of a blister. Blisters hurt but we expect more out of him. Had a great career but call it a day. I thought his speech looked slow in the hype series.
Dan Rafael (12:32 PM)
As an elite figher in major fights, yes, I think he is done.
Cody (Minneapolis)
The split site is the prime example of how boxing promoters don't give a damn about their live audience. Why not eat a bit of money and put both fights at the MGM? Instead of getting 1 stacked event for live fans, you'll get 2 mediocre ones....It is ridiculous. If they had Canelo as a co-feature for mayweather I'd go, but now I won't. I'll save my money and go to the UFC in october at the mandalay where there will be a stacked undercard without a split site.....boxing ppl will never learn.
Dan Rafael (12:33 PM)
You are clueless. You don't put Canelo and Mayweather on the same card because they both bring huge gates. That is basic business. Would I like to see it? Sure. But I understand the basics of the boxing business. If it meant leaving a little on the table, I would advocate it. But not millions.
steven (louisville)
when will sergio martinez be back in action and who uis rumored to be his opponent?
Dan Rafael (12:34 PM)
Martinez is supposed to go Oct. 1. But his opponent is way up in the air.
Julio (DFW)
Dan, who in your opinion has been progressing better. Frankie Gomez or Jose Benavidez.
Dan Rafael (12:34 PM)
So far, Benavidez.
Ron (Baltimore)
Froch v. Ward will be for the RING title at 168. You ok with that or do you think they should make the winner fight Bute for the 168 title?
Dan Rafael (12:35 PM)
I'm fine with it because I now also have Ward 1 and Froch 2. I like Bute a lot, but his competition pales at this point compared to Ward and Froch.
Adrian (Washington)
Am i the only one who is high on Danny Geale? Geale vs Martinez is a competitive fight for me. Would HBO Accept this and could it happen Dan?
Dan Rafael (12:35 PM)
I'm with you. I like that fight and mentioned it to Uncle Lou.
david (korea)
will there be a klit-haye 24/7? having seen the preview for the face-off i am pumped!
Dan Rafael (12:36 PM)
No, just the Face Off.
Steve (Hartford)
Anyword on when and Where Berto will return?
Dan Rafael (12:36 PM)
DiBella is aiming for a Sept. HBO date, but it remains to be seen what the network has in mind.
Jesse (Montreal)
How do you think Mikey Garcia would fare against Gamboa if ever they fight Dan?
Dan Rafael (12:36 PM)
I think Garcia gives him problems because he throws straight punches, has excellent poise and solid defense. And good power.
Pete (Dallas)
where will the cotto vs margarito 2 happen vegas, AC, New York or Cowboy stadium
Dan Rafael (12:37 PM)
Arum told me Cotto-Margarito is likely to be in NYC.
Jesse (Montreal)
Do you know if there will be random drug testing for Mayweather-Ortiz?
Dan Rafael (12:38 PM)
According to Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy, yes, there will be.
Richie (Bronx)
What did you think of the episode 5 of Showtime 360
Dan Rafael (12:38 PM)
Ep 5 of Pacquiao-Mosley was the best show of the series.
Johnny Canuck (Toronto)
Why does the heavyweight division "stink" worse than many others? You have Wlad-Haye, Vitali-Adamek, Helenius-Liakhovich all coming up, all of which are very good matchups. Quit relying on lazy cliches Dan, you're losing your edge.
Dan Rafael (12:39 PM)
The division does stink. Wlad-Haye is obviously significant, but Wlad should be a big favorite. I give Adamek almost zero chance of winning. And the last time I saw Liakhovich in a good fight was Brewster about 5 years ago.
Chris (SF)
Dan, speaking of Ward vs. Froch. Now that its official, any word or negotiations on where the Final site will be?
Dan Rafael (12:40 PM)
No site yet, but both fighters have made it quite clear they want it in Las Vegas. One thing is certain: It will be in the US.
Dan Rafael (12:41 PM)
Here's my story from this morning on Chavez Jr.'s plans: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=6647904
Dax (Pomona)
Any news on Donaire? Sad to see that Montiel will fight before Donaire.
Dan Rafael (12:41 PM)
Nope. Locked in his contract battle. Made some poor decisions.
Julio (DFW)
So even though 1.3 million is an amazing number, I can't help but feel disappointed. With CBS and some prime time advertisement I thought it would easily do 1.5 to 1.6
Dan Rafael (12:43 PM)
1.3 for Pac-Mosley on PPV is a great number for what was a garbage fight.
Mat (San Antonio)
You mentioned that the next JCC Jr fight might be in San Antonio, I'm guessing the Alamodome? I've never seen a live fight and it would be just down the road..
Dan Rafael (12:43 PM)
No, it would be where the Spurs play.
Dan Rafael (12:44 PM)
Here's my story from yesterday about the Guerrero-Maidana fight: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=6646257
Charlie (Chicago, IL)
If Alvarez beats Rhodes and fights a credible name on the split site PPV with Mayweather, isnt there a chance the fight does 2mil ppv buys?
Dan Rafael (12:45 PM)
I'd be surprised.
Harold (Clothier, WV)
OK Dan, we all know that JMM has given Pac problems, but at 144 do you expect Juan to give Manny a serious go? Personally I think he gets steamrolled, and maybe doesn't win a round.
Dan Rafael (12:46 PM)
Guess we will see. But it is a fight that has to happen.
Richie (Bronx)
Is FNF good tonight? never heard of the fighters
Dan Rafael (12:48 PM)
It features some excellent young Puerto Rican fighters on Puerto Rican parade weekend in NY. The co-feature tonight with Thomas Dulorme against Chop Chop Corley I am very much looking forward to. Dulorme looks like a serious prospect. Awesome offensive skills and charisma, very young, I think only 20 or 21. Good puncher. Corley is a cagey veteran and former titlist. Really want to see what the kid can do against a pro like Corley. Galarza in the main event is a good puncher and was a top amateur. Has just one loss to Brad Solomon, who picked him apart with his boxing skills. But Galarza is still fun and has a lot of potential going up against a vetern in Irving Garcia, who has made some very good fights. It's a good show tonight.
Dan Rafael (12:49 PM)
While I'm on the subject of FNF, my understanding as that the show comes on at 9 pm on ESPN2. But if you are interested in seeing super prospect Jose Pedraza of Puerto Rico (a lightweight) the telecast starts at 8:30 pm on ESPN Deportes and his fight will be shown before the rest of the card.
Dan Rafael (12:50 PM)
Here's my story on the Pacquiao-Mosley PPV numbers: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=6645782
Ruben (Mexico)
Chavez-Zbik the most wathced fight since.....Malignagi-N'Dou???? Man...have the BAD matchups been so bad in between? Was it a surprise to you?
Dan Rafael (12:51 PM)
There have been plenty of good BAD matches between those fights. But how good a match is does not always translate to ratings.
Neal (Joliet, IL)
Is HBO concerned about the ratings for Klitschko-Haye fight coming on the American holiday weekend? I'm happy the fight is happening and realize that it is an event that goes beyond our borders, but I think the interest domestically will take a real hit since it's a holiday and people will be at the beach and cooking out all night
Dan Rafael (12:53 PM)
You are right, which is why HBO preffered the fight go June 25. But HBO is not the lead broadcaster or even in second position. RTL (Klitschko's network in Germany) and Sky (Haye's network in the UK) are driving the bus on this one. HBO is along for the ride. So while HBO is paying good money for the fight, the fee they are paying I am sure takes into account that it is a terrible weekend in the US for television, especially for a live event in the afternoon on the Saturday of July 4th weekend.
Duff (Boston, MA)
Dulorme is a beast. He has all the makings of a future Puerto Rican star.
Dan Rafael (12:54 PM)
I agree, but let's not get tooooo carried away just yet.
Luis (Westchester)
Regarding Bute/Kessler if that gets made you think that Europe is a legitimate option or do you see Montreal as the likely site
Dan Rafael (12:56 PM)
If it is made, I believe it will be in Montreal. However, I am told there are lot of problems making the fight. I am told that Bute's people know there are issues on the Kessler side and are supposed to make an offer to Top Rank for Pavlik to get the fight. Doesn't mean Kessler side won't come around, but Bute camp is preparing like it will need another opponent and Pavlik is the first choice. Bute, of course, has to win July 9 or none of it matters.
Dominic (San Francisco)
So Bob Arum was paying for Genaro Hernandez's medical bills. That far outweighs all the crappy undercards he has put together and shows the type of person he really is. Please give him a big thumbs up from all the freaks.
Dan Rafael (12:57 PM)
Yes, despite many of the things about Bob that many people despise, he has been charitible in many ways a lot of people don't know about. Paying the lion's share of Genaro's medical bills is just one of the many I am aware of.
Anthony (Bronx, NY)
I agree that Dulorme looks like a beast, but I'm finding a trend amongst top Puerto Rican fighters recently. They neglect defense. (Juanma, Rocky Martinez). From what you've seen of Dulorme, would you agree he's all offense so far?
Dan Rafael (12:59 PM)
I haven't seen enough of him to make that determination. The two fights of his I saw from ringside showed me his defense is fine.
Victor (north jersey)
why not have cloud pascal on the undercard of dawson hopkins?
Dan Rafael (12:59 PM)
That is certainly a fight HBO would be interested and it's a good one. I'm sure if Cloud wins in two weeks, it will be discussed.
Joey (Charleston, SC)
How much longer before Chop Chop Corley's gatekeeper status completely disintegrates? He's taken some bad beatings as of late.
Dan Rafael (1:00 PM)
He also gave Maidana life and death a couple of fights ago. For a kid 10-0 to fight somebody of his experience is legit.
Jesse (Montreal)
Any words on a possible date for David Lemieux's return? All I hear here in MTL is that he's been in the gym for the past 2 months re-tooling.
Dan Rafael (1:00 PM)
I spoke to Yvon Michel about it and probably in the fall.
James (Rio Rancho NM)
Dan, I'm a new follower to your chat, first time posting a comment. Showtime replayed the Corrales-Castillo fight this week. Best fight I've ever seen. Noticed you were a press row judge for that. Was that the best fight you've ever seen live?
Dan Rafael (1:01 PM)
Yes, I was there and it was the best fight I have ever covered in the 11-plus years I have covered boxing.
Derrick (MA)
Who was beter, Tyson in his prime or Lennox Lewis in his prime?
Dan Rafael (1:02 PM)
In his prime, Tyson was unbeatable. In his prime, Lennox got knocked out by a journeyman.
Tim (London)
Wow, respect to Arum For the Hernandez gesture.
Jeremy (Canastota, NY)
Who, so far, should be here in the Boxing Hall of Fame, but isn't? I keep thinking Hearns more than anyone.
Dan Rafael (1:03 PM)
Hearns is not in because he is not eligible yet. He will be next year I believe. You have to be out of the ring 5 years. Hearns would go 4 years and then fight. And then go 2 years and then fight. So every time he would have a fight, the clock would start again. He will be elected on the first ballot he appears on.
Steve (Hartford)
Hbo decide if they will air an undercard on Khan/Judah?
Dan Rafael (1:04 PM)
So far not decided as far as I know.
Jesse (Montreal)
Is Khan-Judah big enough for HBO to make a 24/7 show on them?
Dan Rafael (1:06 PM)
No, not big enough, not PPV and takes place in next month so not enough time. Strike 3, you're out.
Dan Rafael (1:08 PM)
Here's my story about Luis Collazo signing with Golden Boy: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=6643976
Adam (Guelph, Ontario)
Dan,If you were a fighter what would your ring entrance music be??
Dan Rafael (1:09 PM)
We've been over this many times. Easy. War Machine by KISS, preferably the version from the massive concert in Rio just before they took off the makeup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jv2FFP8v254
Dave (PA)
Great interview with Tyson. While he might not ever be fully at peace, it is encouraging to see both from this piece and some of his other recent quotes that he seems to be in a good place in life right now. Good for him.
Dan Rafael (1:10 PM)
Exactly. He does seem to be in a great spot right now. I certainly hope it lasts.
Rick (Marina, Ca)
How hard is it not get caught up in the moment if you covering an exciting fight like a corrales vs castillo fight, do you have to stay seated or can you stand up when the exchages get exciting?
Dan Rafael (1:11 PM)
Stay seated at all times.
Berndawg (CHI)
Speaking of which, rocking to KISS Alive 2 hear at the office, what do you have GOT??
Dan Rafael (1:12 PM)
Listening to the War Machine video from the link I just posted.
Ryan (Youngstown)
Dan, can we catch the Pedraza fight on ESPN3 also or only Deportes?
Dan Rafael (1:12 PM)
Not certain, but would imagine on ESPN2 as well.
Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)
Who made up the Sportsnation ranking thing that offered Omar Narvaez as a Top 15 choice for the HoF? That is absurd.
Dan Rafael (1:13 PM)
LOL. I have no idea. I havent looked at the poll yet, but that does strike me as bit insane.
Jeff (LA)
Any interest in Derek Chisora/Tyson Fury Heavyweight British title fight?
Dan Rafael (1:14 PM)
I'm mildly interested. For those who are, it will be on US PPV for $24.95.
Jackson (IA)
Dan...was Tyson not in his prime for Douglas? And was Douglas not a journeyman? Just want to hear your thoughts. I know there were personal things surrounding Mike, but I thought he was still in his prime...
Dan Rafael (1:15 PM)
That was the end of Tyson's prime in retrospect. He was not properly prepared for the fight. He had an amateur corner that may have cost him the fight. And Douglas was a journeyman with talent, but he put it all together that night. He had resolve and was motivated by all the hard things going on in his life, like the death of his mother shortly before the fight.
Edju (Salisbury, MA)
Dulorme-Corley strikes me as pretty close to Cotto-Corley several years back in Puerto Rico. Chances of it going much the same way (without the crap stoppage)?
Dan Rafael (1:16 PM)
Cotto was much more advanced as a pro when he fought Corley, who was also much fresher. They are not the same at all.
Ryan (Michigan)
How did you manage to stay seated after the martinez ko of Williams. Figure the punch and shock alone was enough to make the world stand
Dan Rafael (1:17 PM)
You just get used to it. Been doing this awhile. Doesn't mean I don't get excited at fights, but you just learn to keep it under control.
TJ (Pittsburgh)
Hey Dan, any truth that Edison Miranda will now be on FNF in place of the Diaz fight?
Dan Rafael (1:18 PM)
As I wrote, that is a possibility. But no decision has been made yet as far as I know.
Jesse (Montreal)
Do you believe Caballero's claims that he will retire if he loses his next fight against Jonathan Barros?
Dan Rafael (1:19 PM)
No. Fighters lie about that stuff all the time.
pedro (miami)
do you know when rigondeaux is fighting again, against whom ?
Dan Rafael (1:22 PM)
Interesting question. Right now, Rigondeaux's lawyer has petitioned the WBA to stop the Shimoda-Ramos fight that is supposed to be July 9 on HBO because Rigondeaux is the interim titleholder and supposedly the mandatory. He wants his shot at Shimoda or for Shimoda to be stripped and him be given the title. I have read the complaint and it is damning for the WBA (which is clearly not following its rules in this instance). The WBA has not ruled yet. We shall see what happens.
David (Houston)
Golden Boy throwing Ortiz under the bus a little early? He just got a belt and his confidence back. Now he will lose both.
Dan Rafael (1:23 PM)
You are crazy. Kid is getting the biggest opportunity of a lifetime. He will be in a massive, massive fight and make life-altering millions of dollars. That is what this sport is about. He won his title. He is 24 and ready to go. Why hold him back? They'd have to be morons to turn down a fight with Mayweather.
Dan Rafael (1:24 PM)
We have breaking news from the Bat Email.
Dan Rafael (1:25 PM)
I was wondering about the status of the Miranda-Despigne fight replacing Juan Diaz on July 29. So I asked those who would know. In fact, I am told, that the contracts are signed and that Miranda-Despaigne is on and will headline the show that night from the Cosmo in Vegas.
Aaron (MI)
When is Andre Dirrell returning to the ring and any idea who he will face?
Dan Rafael (1:26 PM)
All up in the air. He has been offered to ESPN2 for a fight later this summer, but nothing doing at the moment.
Lee (Los Angeles, CA)
Other than Pacquiao/Mayweather, what's the biggest fight in history between two fighters in their primes to never happen?
Dan Rafael (1:27 PM)
Off the top of my head -- and I am sure there are others -- but Lewis-Bowe never happened in the pros when they were at their peaks.
Charles (Ogden, Utah)
Do you think there is any chance Bute would overtake the #2 spot again if he blows Mendy out completely -- or no matter what is Froch going to be #2 still in the Fall when he meets Ward?
Dan Rafael (1:27 PM)
Doubtful. Mendy is not the kind of opponent that shoots you up to No. 2.
Bats (Las Vegas)
What do you think of some boxing media downplaying a Miranda vs Despaigne fight? I think its a good fight someone will get ko'ed
Dan Rafael (1:28 PM)
I know of no media downplaying it or hyping it. It is what it is -- a solid FNF fight.
Dan Rafael (1:28 PM)
I know of no media downplaying it or hyping it. It is what it is -- a solid FNF fight.
liam (London)
Please pray for Brother Naazims sons, Rock and Tiger Allen who were involved in a car accident yesterday and had to be helicoptered to hospital.
Dan Rafael (1:28 PM)
Exactly. I heard about that the other day and hopefully they will be OK.
Dan Rafael (1:30 PM)
I just did the rank 'em poll on the boxing Hall of Fame.
Nick (L.A.)
I ran into Lebron and asked him for a dollar. He gave me .75 cents. I was puzzled, but then I realized he never gives you the fourth quarter.
Dan Rafael (1:31 PM)
Nice to steal the joke that is all over Twitter. Banishment?
Jesse (Montreal)
Arum made a comment saying that Ortiz is going to make half of what JMM is going to earn against Pacman and maybe even less. Do you know exactly how much Ortiz is going to make against Floyd Dan?
Dan Rafael (1:32 PM)
My understanding is that he will make around $2 million plus upside.
Rob (Williston Park, NY)
Are you serious? WBA isn't following their own rules? OMG what a surprise!!!
Dan Rafael (1:32 PM)
As Gus Johnson would say: INCREDIBLE!!!!!! OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Al (Las Cruces, NM)
I know that you didn't have anything to do with it, but on the rank em poll they have a picture of Morales under JMM's name.
Dan Rafael (1:33 PM)
I let the office know and it is being fixed. Just a mistake.
Steven (Kingsport)
"Now class, see Judah make some money vs Khan because he is realistic with his demands and Ortiz make a pile fighting Mayweather but here at the Winky school of business, we teach you to stand up for your principals like our star student Timmy B. Timmy please report to the photo lab so your picture may be processed for the next batch of milk cartons."
Dan Rafael (1:34 PM)
Pay the man, Shirley.
Greg (Los Angeles)
Dan is Joel still in Judah's camp or is it all Whitaker from a training standpoint?
Dan Rafael (1:34 PM)
Yoel is of course still there, but Whitaker is the No. 1 guy now.
Joel Julio (DTM's House)
Dad????
Dan Rafael (1:34 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Hope you are training hard for July 23.
Jackson (IA)
Carl Froch. What a chin. That's all I got on that subject.
Rob (Albany)
So beating Abraham and Johnson, two fighters who havent done anything at 168, makes you move over Bute?
Dan Rafael (1:37 PM)
Look at his last 6 fights of competition and compare to Bute. It's not close. Froch deserves to be moved up to No. 2. Abraham and Johnson are better opponents than the guys Bute beat in his last two, Brinkly and Magee. Please. Not even close.
steven (louisville)
do you think glen johnson now goes back to light heavywieght or does he stay at super middleweight?
Dan Rafael (1:39 PM)
I think he will take a fight in whichever division offers him the best opportunity and money.
Richie (Bronx, NY)
I found it scary that Roy Jones talked about continueing to fight. Your thoughts..
Dan Rafael (1:42 PM)
Retire. Immediately.
evan (veniceca)
froch also beat dirrell, and had a close war with kessler and beat pascal.
Dan Rafael (1:43 PM)
That is my point. And also throw in a KO of Taylor.
Rob (Albany)
You're forgetting that Froch lost to Kessler. Doesnt matter how close the fight was he still lost.
Dan Rafael (1:43 PM)
I didnt forget anything.
Matt (Philly)
Hey Dan, I can't seem to get my chat questions posted. I'm losing faith. I was wondering about a middleweight tournament. Maybe Martinez, Sturm/Macklin, Geale and Pirog. Do you think HBO or Showtime might do something like that? It seems like Martinez (DiBella) and HBO may be on the outs. Thanks.
Dan Rafael (1:44 PM)
No way. No reason for that kind of tourney. We already know who No. 1 is -- Martinez. And those other guys are basically unknown here to the extent you would spent good money on them in long-term committments, which a tournament needs. Ain't gonna happen.
Berto (In Ortiz's locker room)
Dan kept doing these long chats. He must be on something.
Chris (WI)
Floyd Mayweather opened up as an 8-1 favorite over Victor Ortiz.
Dan Rafael (1:46 PM)
OK. Too high to me, but the book odds are made to bring in action on both sides. Not what the "real" odds are.
Jackson (IA)
Rob in Albany. Give it up. Froch has had at least five fights tougher than Bute's toughest. And please...Bute's got a loss. We all know it.
Dan Rafael (1:49 PM)
I was with you until you said he had a loss. You're wrong. Don't give me that crap about the first Andrade fight.
Duff (Boston, MA)
Froch is 5-1 in his last 6, with wins over Pascal, Taylor, Dirrell, Abraham and Johnson. His only loss was a close decision against Kessler in Denmark. Bute hasn't faced that many quality opponents in his entire career.
Dan Rafael (1:51 PM)
Froch is the epitome of a guy who has EARNED his rankings.
evan (venice, ca)
froch also has Rachael Cordingley on his resume. don't forget that.
Dan Rafael (1:51 PM)
Wow, that is also an outstanding point.
Steve (NYC)
Shouldn't fighting in multiple nations also factor into Froch's ranking?
Dan Rafael (1:52 PM)
Also a notable point. I certainly dont blame Bute for staying in Montreal because he makes good money there and draws a crowd. But Froch has shown a lot by regularly going on the road.
James (Atlanta, GA)
Can we go ahead and award Rios Antillon FOY?
Dan Rafael (1:53 PM)
Not yet. We'll see on July 10.
TJ (Pittsburgh)
I was really impressed with Kessler's performance after a 14 month layoff. He looked really sharp. I don't blame Bute's people at all for looking at Pavlik first. I would love to see Johnson vs Kessler though. Would be a great matchup.
Dan Rafael (1:55 PM)
I agree Kessler looked very sharp. BUT, from what I hear, it is not Bute's people looking to do something other than fight Kessler. There are problems on Kessler's side. Bute will take the fight, as I understand it. I think it comes down to a disagreement over money between Kessler and his handlers.
Steve (NYC)
On the subject of international fights, do you feel it adds to a fighter's legacy to have a big win abroad?
Dan Rafael (1:57 PM)
I think it can boost it, although it doesn't hurt it if a guy doesnt.
Kevin (Milwaukee)
If you had to pick today what would be your fight of the year so far?
Dan Rafael (1:57 PM)
Probably Hernan Marquez vs. Luis Concepcion with Ortiz-Berto second.
Kevin (Milwaukee)
Any truth in the guaranteed 40 mil for Mayweather in the Ortiz fight? That would be crazy!
Dan Rafael (1:58 PM)
That is what I hear. But who really knows?
Joel (Queens, Ny)
Can you tell me the story on whhy Arum gave you the finger?
Dan Rafael (1:59 PM)
Freaks? Who wants to go there?
kg ((Hartford))
With a resume like froch has why isn't he ranked ahead of Ward??
Dan Rafael (2:01 PM)
Ward EASILY beat the No. 1 guy before him, Kessler and has barely lost any rounds his entire career. Routed Green and Bika in recent fights as well, plus Abraham. Froch's loss to Kessler does still count against him. Ward easily beat Kessler before Kessler beat Froch.
Matt (San Diego)
Dan, I was curious what you think of Austin Trout? He has a defense tomorrow against Lopez, do you think he holds onto his trinket?
Dan Rafael (2:02 PM)
Trout should win. Much quicker and skillful. Lopez is tough, but has lost many fights and is very one-dimensional.
Dan Rafael (2:02 PM)
Trout should win. Much quicker and skillful. Lopez is tough, but has lost many fights and is very one-dimensional.
Geo (ELA)
Folks...I love that we have a nice lil argument about FROCH and BUTE...I think that the fact that we are having this discussion shows that the tourney has stirred interest in this Division...regardless of rankings they should eventually fight and settle it for us!
Chris (WI)
After Dan the man complained very much about Yuri Foreman being featured on the undercard of Pacquiao-Cotto because he fights boring fights, Yuri Foreman ended up fighting a mediocre fight and Arum gave him the finger because of what Dan wrote prior to the fight.
C.M. (Toronto)
Furthermore, it wasn't just a casual middle finger. He was aggressively waving it around like it was a magic wand or something. Won't ever forget it and was the first to bring it up in the chats the week after.
Dan Rafael (2:04 PM)
Well explained.
Dan Rafael (2:06 PM)
Notebook is up Fight Freaks: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/columns/story?columnist=rafael_dan&id=6648293
Dan Rafael (2:07 PM)
Enjoy the Quotable.
Eric P (Saratoga Springs)
Can I just say how much it pleases me when Max Kellerman shows complete disregard for "belt champions" and shows all the love to the "true weight division champion".
Anthony (Bronx, NY)
AAAAAAAAhhhhhh, notebook time!
Kirk (Lowestoft UK)
Hey Dan, just been watching you on "Ringside" love the jacket very jazzy!!! Now on a serious note, who would you pick out of a prime Tyson versus a prime Tua. I think Tyson was made for Tua to knock-out =)
Dan Rafael (2:09 PM)
LOL! My mom and wife said basically the same thing. I couldn't bear to put on a tie yesterday. It was like 95 degrees here! Tyson-Tua was a fight a lot of people wanted to see. I would go with Tyson during Tyson's prime.
Robert (Dutchess County NY)
Any idea how the Boxing Hall of Fame ended up in Canastota N.Y of all places? Thanks for the Tyson interview and the BBQ story last week.
Dan Rafael (2:10 PM)
Canastota is the hometown of the great Carmen Basillio and his fans founded the HOF there.
Clay (Chattanooga)
TYSON!!! He has no faith in Haye! haha I love it!
Steve (NYC)
Where did you party after the fight in AC?
Dan Rafael (2:14 PM)
Went to a club at Caesar Atlantic City. I forget the name, but it was cool.
Dax (Pomona)
This year's FNF is full of fun. How's FNF ratings this year?
Dan Rafael (2:15 PM)
I am told up something like 15%.
Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)
Gotta give Andre Ward credit for saying the fight should be on neutral territory because Froch has earned it. Stand up guy right there.
Dan Rafael (2:19 PM)
Agreed. Andre has no problem fighting outside of California, but for various reasons his bouts wound up there.
Sean (China)
DTM, who wins the mythical HOF matchup between Julio Cesar Chavez and Kostya Tszyu at 140?
Dan Rafael (2:19 PM)
Tszyu battered Chavez late in his career, but in their primes I would go with Chavez.
James (Atlanta, GA)
Up 15%? But boxing is dead though!
Wade (Brooklyn)
Why does Glen Johnson feel he was robbed after every fight?
Dan Rafael (2:20 PM)
Glen doesn't. He gave Froch credit and did not argue the decision one iota.
Lou Diamand (East Los)
Who did Mike Tyson never fight that you would have liked to see him fight?
Dan Rafael (2:20 PM)
George Foreman.
Dax (Pomona)
Heard of rumor about Jorge Linares pairing Roach? I think that's a good pairing right?
Dan Rafael (2:22 PM)
That is something being discussed and Linares would like to relocate to LA to train with him. But at this point, it is talk.
Charles (Ogden, Utah)
Greater tendency to fall apart at a critical time: The Miami Heat or Zab Judah?
Dan Rafael (2:23 PM)
Right now Judah, but let's see what happens in Game 6 and possibly Game 7.
Chris (WI)
When is Freddie Roach's reality show supposed to start on HBO?
Dan Rafael (2:23 PM)
Next year.
Clay (Chattanooga)
Hey Dan, are they going to show Haye vs Klitschko on tape delay?
Dan Rafael (2:23 PM)
No, live on HBO. And a replay later that night in prime time.
Mark (San Francisco)
What's up next for Darchinyan? He looked good against Perez. I picked Perez to win that fight.
Dan Rafael (2:26 PM)
Nothing specific yet, but Gary Shaw told me has a meeting coming up with Showtime to discuss his next fight.
Anthony [via mobile]
Dan, anyword on ticket prices for may vs ortiz? When do they go on sale?
Dan Rafael (2:26 PM)
TBA.
Jorge (Anahem, CA)
Dan, will the JMM tune- up be on tv here?
Dan Rafael (2:27 PM)
According to Arum, yes. Read the notebook.
Carlos Colon (Santa Isabel, PR)
Greatest pony-tailed fighter ever is Kostya Tszyu, no question. Who's the second-greatest, though? Lennox Lewis (does that 'do count as a pony-tail?)? Kid Diamond?? Randall Yonker?????
Dan Rafael (2:27 PM)
Get a life.
Tomer (New York, NY)
Speaking of the Heavyweight division, Alexander Povetkin is probably regretting he ever turned down the Wlad fight now that he's inactive and not getting any younger, isn't he?
Dan Rafael (2:27 PM)
Who?
Steve (NYC)
Any news on Aerola's next fight? Buzz has it in July in AC.
Dan Rafael (2:29 PM)
Very possibly July 9 on the Paul Williams card.
Jorge (East Los Angeles)
Dan, I'm surprised there hasn't been more talk from the freaks on Kayode/Godfrey tonight? I like the matchup, who do you think gets the W?
Dan Rafael (2:30 PM)
Solid ShoBox fight. Kayode has the pure power, Godfrey the better boxer. I am going with Kayode on the stoppage. Good test for Kayode. And if Gidfrey wins, he will get himself another good fight I would think.
Brian (NC)
For some reason when I looked at the pic of you and Rachel, I half expected Sam Watson and his sons to show up in the picture somewhere. LOL
Dan Rafael (2:31 PM)
PAY THE MAN SHIRLEY!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!
Danny (Chicago)
DTM, you mentioned earlier this week on twitter that Chavez SR and JR were the 5th father and son to win world championships in boxing. Who are some of the others?
Dan Rafael (2:32 PM)
There is a chart with my piece on Jr. from last Thursday. Vazquez Jr and Sr., Guty Espadas Jr and Sr., Cory and Leon Spinks and Tracy and Floyd Patterson.
Chris (Los Angeles, CA)
If I buy a cat and name hime Ricky Catton, how many lives does he have?
Dan Rafael (2:33 PM)
Nine?
Dave (Miami)
Dan you continue to be disgusted with the WBC but then give them some crediblity when you call Chavez Jr a "Champion". Make up your mind.
Dan Rafael (2:34 PM)
I've never called Chavez Jr. a champion (or, as Arum would say, a champeeeeen). He is a mere titlist.
Nick (Atlanta)
Just read the Tyson piece-- it blows my mind how at peace he finally seems... an awesome story and a happy ending that's too rare in boxing.
Dan Rafael (2:35 PM)
Thanks. Hopefully, he will have one.
Milton (Durham, NC)
Danimal!!! Great Notebook. I think Rios and Antillon could make a FOTY candidate. Am I overstating this match?
Dan Rafael (2:35 PM)
You over overstating neither -- it is a great notebook and it could be FOY. :)
steven (London)
any idea who is picking up Mayweather-Ortiz? i know its probably most likely HBO, but will Showtime try there hand at this?
Dan Rafael (2:38 PM)
TBA, but I would fully expect HBO to get this fight. I am told that Showtime is very interested as well, but I see it going to HBO. If HBO were to lose this one too that would be the end of the world as they know it.
Rags (NYC)
T-minus 3 weeks for David Haye to come up with an excuse....
Dan Rafael (2:38 PM)
Nah, I think it's happening this time. Well, I hope it is.
bill (carmel, ny)
i am also happy to see iron mike so at peace. he is in a much better place than any boxing fans could have predictetd and i join dan's hopes that mke continues on this positive path.
Quincy Q (HoTLanta)
Dan the man do fighters take your boxing writing personal
Dan Rafael (2:40 PM)
I have no idea.
Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)
Just read Brian (NC) comment about The Watson family. That's an all-time classic right there.
Dan Rafael (2:40 PM)
It was pretty epic.
Frank (PHX)
Dan I heard Jose Benavidez is fighting here in PHX next month but I noticed it's not on the schedule. I would love to go check him out, Any idea who he's fighting and what date?
Dan Rafael (2:41 PM)
He's fighting there this weekend. Look on the sked.
Dan Rafael (2:41 PM)
He's fighting there this weekend. Look on the sked.
john (pdx)
Has Floyd ever called you up the way Amir Khan and other boxers do?
Dan Rafael (2:41 PM)
Yes, but not lately.
Killer (Queens)
So David Haye won't even go in the same room to be interviewed with Wladimir on Sky Sports? Haye is supposed to be the master of trash talk, it seems Wlad has him shook.
Dan Rafael (2:42 PM)
The fight grows closer every day. He knows it.
odogg (LC, NM)
Any news on Panchito Bojado? just kidding
Dan Rafael (2:44 PM)
Let's party like it's 2002!!!
Michael (indianapolis)
If i miss work monday to travel to the hall of fame, will you write me an excuse for my supervisor????
Dan Rafael (2:45 PM)
No.
Dan Rafael (2:45 PM)
No.
Shawn (Tempe)
Frank in Phx, Benavidez is fighting at Wild Horse Pass Casino
Mark (NYC)
How poorly do I have to do on the GMAT to get into the Winky Wright School of Boxing Business? If I spell my name correctly, am I too qualified to attend?
Mark (WI)
Would HBO buy a Bradley vs Morales fight? Erik looked great against Maidana and I feel like Bradley having no power, could make for a good fight...
Dan Rafael (2:46 PM)
I would be disappointed if HBO did.
Rick (Philly)
Any rants from Lou today?
Dan Rafael (2:50 PM)
No, he's busy with his shows this weekend.
Steven (Chicago)
Is JMM still facing David Diaz? I didn't see it in the schedule.
Dan Rafael (2:51 PM)
No, he is fighting Likar Ramos.
Henry (Chicago, IL)
do you have pretty toes?
Dan Rafael (2:51 PM)
These are my readers.
John (San Fran)
Do you think Dwayne Wade keeps yelling "YOUR AN ASSASSIN" at Lebron as he slowly slinks into the corner against the mavs?
Mark (WI)
It was awesome hearing Max refer to you as "the Bill Simmons of Boxing" on his radio show this week
Dan Rafael (2:53 PM)
That annoyed me. He should have called Bill Simmons "the Dan Rafael of general sports."
Kevin (LA)
Did you see Jeremy Schaap on ESPN suggesting that Tyson is questionable for the Hall of Fame if evaluated solely on in-ring performance?
Dan Rafael (2:55 PM)
All due respect to Jeremy. He's a friend and a brilliant journalist who also knows about boxing. But I vigorously disagree.
Scott (Staten Island)
Bill Simmons.... Im still laughing at his Podcast when he was being serious about a Pac- Pavilk fight.
Luis (Driving from Miami to Key West)
Hi dan writng to you while driving. Want to konw what is up next for Lucen Bute whether he fights Pavlik or Kessler next
Dan Rafael (2:56 PM)
Look up! WATCH OUT FOR THE TREE!
Barry (Winston Salem)
The guys on the Mike and Mike Show were knocking the Sly Stallone selection. Seem they never give any love to boxing.
Dan Rafael (2:57 PM)
I disagree with them also. The HOF has many non-combatants in it like all HOFs. Stallone created an iconic boxing figure, even if he is fictional. It did a lot for boxing. He deserves to be in the HOF.
dan (ny)
Have u heard that Jay Z is financially involved in Ortiz Mayweather?
Dan Rafael (2:58 PM)
I have, that he and some other music/rap folks are part of the investment group putting up a crapload of money for Mayweather.
Nathan (Canasta, ny)
I'm at the hall fame now and it is packed. A lot of boxing celebs here. Chavez, Morales, tzyu, Tyson, ward, Martinez and of course, Frank Stallone. Not kidding
Dan Rafael (3:01 PM)
No surpise. It will get even more packed.
Leonardo (Puerto Rico)
Is this one of the better classes to be inducted? Which class has has been stronger since you've been covering the HOF?
Dan Rafael (3:05 PM)
The 2007 class had Duran, Whitaker and Ricardo Lopez. That's some big-time guys.
Dave (Cincinnati)
Yes, the whole people disagreeing with Stallone being inducted blows my mind. I mean, what other medium/character/promotion reached out to the masses more than Rocky? An enormous contribution to the sport and the reason I started to follow professional boxing.
Dan Rafael (3:06 PM)
They're idiots.
Dave M (New York)
Is ESPN or anyone broadcasting the induction?
Dan Rafael (3:06 PM)
Not that I am aware of.
Horn (Vegas)
Your personal most memorable Tyson moment?
Dan Rafael (3:07 PM)
I have many. Too many to single out one.
Ryan (Michigan)
Question dan. Is Ellerbe currently aware of negotitations between mayweather and ortiz?
Dan Rafael (3:08 PM)
OMG! Pay the man, Shirley. That is epic.
Bob (Chicago)
Chavez Sr. question -- How did you have the fight with Whitaker (obviously not at ringside)? I still think Whitaker gets short changed in the all-time discussions because he was a defensive fighter.
Dan Rafael (3:10 PM)
Whitaker a lot, Chavez a little.
Vinod (NYC)
What do you think of Floyd's punching power relative to Berto's?
Dan Rafael (3:13 PM)
For one shot, Berto is a bigger puncher, but I have always thought Mayweather's power was a little underrated.
Justin (Springfield, NJ)
Dan: Is there any way for the Freaks to get a hold of the Klitschko documentary that you appear in? It doesn't seem to be on the Film Festival's website.
Dan Rafael (3:13 PM)
No idea. I have not seen it yet either.
Josh (Virginia)
You said Floyd has called you before. Has he ever complained about anything you wrote about him?
Dan Rafael (3:15 PM)
Not that I recall, no. His people have though.
Dan Rafael (3:17 PM)
OK, Fight Freaks, thanks for chatting today. Maybe sure to follow me on Twitter @danrafaelespn and to check out all the news, notes and blogs from the week. Enjoy the weekend, especially if you are headed to Canastota. Talk to you next week. Peace.
