Postgame Chat: Game 5 of the NBA Finals with D'Arcy Maine
D'Arcy Maine (12:04 AM)
So... THAT just happened. The Mavs now have a 3-2 series lead after that impressive 112-103 win. I know you've got some questions, comments, thoughts on that LeBron guy, etc. Let's get this started!
John Cleveland Ohio [via mobile]
can Dallas keep up their success from beyond the arc?
D'Arcy Maine (12:06 AM)
That was a huge factor in the Mavs success tonight, John. Dallas shot 13-for-19 (68.45) from beyond the arc. Hard to imagine they could put up those numbers again on Sunday but they certainly have the confidence to make an impact again in that department.
J.Grand Chicago,Il [via mobile]
Who for you is the hero tonight for Dallas?
D'Arcy Maine (12:08 AM)
Definitely think tonight was a team effort, J. Dirk had 29 points and gave another monster performance to lead the team. But Terry (21 points, 3-for-5 behind the arc), Barea (17 points) and Kidd (13 points) all had huge nights as well and were major contributors in the win.
odds guru, pottstown pa [via mobile]
Why can't the heat ever win when I bet them? Someone should pay me to bet the heat sunday, it'll be a guaranteed win for the mavs
D'Arcy Maine (12:08 AM)
Darian (Memphis,TN) [via mobile]
I thought James did okay. He shots just did not fall. How do you think he did?
D'Arcy Maine (12:11 AM)
LeBron did do okay, Darian. I mean he had a triple-double (17 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists) afterall but he scored just two points in the 4th quarter and was largely ineffective when it counted. The Heat desperately needed someone to take the game over in the 4th and LeBron didn't even show a flash of that ability. For a player with his skillset and the expectations we all have for him, this was another disapointing performance.
Horton. Dallas tx. [via mobile]
Do the monstars reconsider taking lebrons talent in Space Jam 2?
Kevin Ga [via mobile]
Can you explain why LeBron is not scoring in the fourth quarter?
D'Arcy Maine (12:14 AM)
Wish I could, Kevin. I think LeBron wishes he could figure that out too. I said it before the game and I'm sticking to it... there seems to be a mental block wih LBJ in pressure situations. He had better looks tonight in general than he did o Tuesday but they just weren't falling. His confidence seems shaken. Maybe the support of the home crowd will help him return to the level we know he can play.
Red, BK [via mobile]
Doesn't it seem like Steve Nash should be in on this?
D'Arcy Maine (12:15 AM)
This chat? Hell yeah. Want to invite him? He was writing some pretty insightful tweets during the game.
D'Arcy Maine (12:15 AM)
...Or are you saying with the Mavs? I did love watching him with Dirk back in the day.
Jeremy (Houston, Tx) [via mobile]
Why does everyone keep saying Lebron is just "under performing" instead of giving credit where credit is due which is to an incredible Mavs Defense
D'Arcy Maine (12:17 AM)
That's a good point, Jeremy. The Mavs are doing a great job shutting LBJ down. I think we're all so used to LeBron playing this incredible defense, the first instinct is to wonder what LeBron is doing wrong, not what the D is doing right.
Nate L.A., Ca [via mobile]
Did Wade's hip injury seem to affect his game?
D'Arcy Maine (12:21 AM)
Well, Wade certainly didn't have the game we've become accustomed to lately. He finished with a still-impressive 23 points and eight assits in 34 minutes. His hip looked okay towards the end of the game but I'm not sure how he'll be on Sunday and how it really impacted his late-game play. I'm trying to get an update on his status as I write this.
Ryan (walkrtown, north carolina [via mobile]
Off of Lebron for a moment, what kinda of trouble are the heat in for game 6 if Wade isn't 100% since he is the clear stabilizing force for the heat?
D'Arcy Maine (12:22 AM)
If Wade isn't 100& or at least close to it, I would think the Heat would be in a scary place entering Game 6. They have the talent to work around an injured Wade but it will be an uphill battle. Especially considering the momentum the Mavs have at the moment.
Marc Boston,Ma [via mobile]
Is it safe to say that perhaps Scottie Pippen spoke too soon when he made the now infamous 'Lebron better than Jordan' case?
D'Arcy Maine (12:24 AM)
It's looking like a less likely claim by the day, Marc. However, keep in mind, LeBron is 26 and has plenty of time to turn around his legacy. I haven't ruled out him becoming the player we all think he should/could be.
GS, Fort Worth TX [via mobile]
What do you think Spoelstra is telling the team right now?
D'Arcy Maine (12:26 AM)
GREAT question. If he's talking, I don't know if anyone's listening. I think Spoelstra really knows his X's and O's and has a very high basketball IQ. I'm just not sure he has complete control over his guys. That to me would at leats help explain their lack of intensity, strategy, etc. in the 4th quarter. I would kind of think Wade should try and say something tonight to regroup this team. He might have the best shot at keeping them focused.
swendall [via mobile]
Why does the media and writers protect lebron,he simply can't play under pressure
D'Arcy Maine (12:27 AM)
Who is protecting him at this point? I've been hearing a lot of doubters lately and not too many defenders...
jirehpr Houston, TX [via mobile]
Any comments on JJ Barea's phenomenal performance? He created problem for miami all night long, and was the reason Dallas was able to control much of this game. Gosh he's fun to watch..
D'Arcy Maine (12:30 AM)
I think phenomenal is the best word. What a game for Barea. 17 points (including 4-for-5 threes) and five assists. This starting role really suits him. Great adjustment by Carlisle.
Wood(Columbia,S.C. [via mobile]
I think tht Lbj doesn't want the pressure of being the "man" in the 4th quarter. What's your take on that?
D'Arcy Maine (12:32 AM)
That's definitely what it looks like. Although I'm not sure if it's a matter of want or that he just can't handle the pressure. For a game he called, "the biggest game" of his career, he really didn't play like it. Maybe the biggest game of his day. Although that might be unfair to his poker game later.
Dan gilbert [via mobile]
Should i open up the arena for a watch party on sunday?
s fort worth, tx [via mobile]
I have read a lot about the crowd (or lack of) on Miami. Do the Heat have an advantage? Especially since we split there before.
D'Arcy Maine (12:35 AM)
While I've been critical of the Heat fans, as have many others, it's still certainly a home court advantage for the Heat as the crowd will be loud and desperate to encourage their team to a win (and perhaps help their own reputation as a fan base). The Mavs have the momentum and the confidence though heading into the game so I would think it's fairly even in terms of edge going into Sunday.
Felipe, Plv, Tx [via mobile]
Yes Wade's injury may have impacted the game but let's not forget Mavs are short-handed too! No Haywood & Peja is just a no show for the series!
D'Arcy Maine (12:38 AM)
Wade is obviously a bigger impact player though, especially considering what he's done in this series up to this point. However, Dirk came in on Tuesday with a fever, sinus infection, no sleep and lingering finger injury and still willed himself to lead the Mavs to a win.
Dwayne Wade [via mobile]
I asked LeBron for change for a dollar and he gave me 75 cents and said, "Sorry, I don't have a 4th Quarter."
D'Arcy Maine (12:39 AM)
I just laughed so hard, I cried.
Scott [via mobile]
Do u think Dirk has finally shed the "soft" or "too euro label" and is finally showing he's definately a hall of famer now?
D'Arcy Maine (12:40 AM)
I think you would be hard pressed to find any NBA fan that would say Dirk isn't a HOF-er. Title or no title. He's been absolutely amazing.
Mark, Chicago, IL [via mobile]
Is it possible Wade faked his injury to help Lebron to get going? This would force Lebron to take control more.
D'Arcy Maine (12:43 AM)
I thought that for a split second myself, Mark. Especially because there was so much talk about how bad it was... and then he returned minutes later. However, I don't think that was actually the case. Wade seemed to be missing a step throughout the game and LeBron didn't take the bait...
checkmate mo [via mobile]
After the drama that polarized fans over the "decision" and his horrible 4th quarters in this series has the self proclaimed king fallen from his throne?
D'Arcy Maine (12:44 AM)
I think he was already off of the throne but trying to find his way back on it. This series has done anything but.
David (Indiana) [via mobile]
Do you think that the Heat fans will come out and be a huge factor in the game on Sunday, after Chuck Barkleys comments about how terrible they are.. I think game 6 is a must win for both teams. If the mavs lose, all of that momentum is gone and they are playing on the road in game 7.
D'Arcy Maine (12:45 AM)
I would imagine Barkley's comments would inspire Heat fans in the building to be loud and rowdy. They certainly responded to him during the ECF when TNT was filming outside... The Mavs are definitely better off winning in six and not letting the Heat have a chance. I just can't imagine this Miami squad doesn't have enough intensity to win at least one more.
Just Me [via mobile]
Did you see video of Wade and LeBron making fun of Dirk by fake coughing after shoot around?
D'Arcy Maine (12:47 AM)
I didn't see this but I've now seen a few questions/comments on it. Spoelstra needs to get his players focused on the game and not on the silly stuff.
Dan NY [via mobile]
Where is the lebron that single handily took down Boston and Chicago?
D'Arcy Maine (12:47 AM)
Still in Chicago?
Rashawn trenton new jersey [via mobile]
Where's the love for Dallas?
D'Arcy Maine (12:49 AM)
I can't win. Half of the comments tell me that I'm a shameless Mavs fan who hates LeBron and the other half tell me I love the Heat. You really can't please everyone. Or anyone. As I'm learning.
Todd, ( dallas) [via mobile]
how many "we beat the axis of evil" shirts will I sell on monday
D'Arcy Maine (12:50 AM)
Do you have someone selling them in Cleveland too? Just trying to help you maximize profits.
David DALLAS,Tx [via mobile]
The ratings for these finals have been great.Do you really think the nba will let dallas win this in 6?
D'Arcy Maine (12:53 AM)
So many conspiracy theories with this! Can you imagine the ratings for Game 7? However, I think we're just watching two teams that are closely matched. But Stern is not complaining.
Justin Akron, Ohio [via mobile]
What will Dan Gilbert get Mark Cuban as a gift if the mavs pull off this series?
Jimmy, SoBe [via mobile]
I named my dog LeBron 6 years ago, after getting a good a feel about LeBron's character and personality, I'm left shaking my head. Can and should I, rename my dog?
D'Arcy Maine (12:54 AM)
Well, it could be worse. Sure beats Roethlisberger.
checkmate mo [via mobile]
Dirk is Dallas's MVP who runner up and who's the Heat's?
D'Arcy Maine (12:59 AM)
Wade continues to be the Heat's MVP in my mind, even with tonight's injury. He still was the team's leading scorer. Before tonight, I though Marion was the Mavs' No. 2 but I might bump up Terry to that spot now.
matt j (houston, TX) [via mobile]
will heat be better off starting chalmers instead of bibby in game 6?
D'Arcy Maine (1:03 AM)
They might be better off in doing so but I don't think Spoelstra will make that switch. I would think he's sticking with Bibby. Despite just two points and zero assists in 15 minutes. Chalmers on the other hand had 15 points in 23 minutes.
WhaByron wichita falls texas [via mobile]
what do you think of chris bosh's play throughout the series?
D'Arcy Maine (1:05 AM)
He's been quietly consistent but, like LeBron, seems to lack that killer instict that can close out a ball game. He's deferring to Wade to do the hard stuff.
Tristan (Houston, TX [via mobile]
Do you think if Caron Butler was still playing the series would be over by now?
D'Arcy Maine (1:09 AM)
Hard to say for sure. If he had't gotten injured in January and didn't miss any time? Who knows how that would have changed the course of the season? It's just too hard to say. However, I've been saying throughout the series the Mavs could use him offensively and I think that's true. Would he have been the X factor in G1 or 3? I'm just not sure.
Lancaster, pa [via mobile]
lebron took his talents to miami, but he forgot to take them to dallas
DRO Toledo,Ohio [via mobile]
Why is all the criticism coming down on LeBron when they lose??? Games are won and lose by a whole team effort not a single individual effort!!!
D'Arcy Maine (1:12 AM)
True... but when you have a player like LeBron who has all the talent in the world and sets himself up with such high expectations, it's hard to not blame him for scoring two points in the 4th quarter. We wouldn't be having this conversation about Kobe.
dewitt (reading, pa) [via mobile]
Lebron took his talents to south beach and Dirk took his talents to the gym. Who do you feel deserves a title more?
D'Arcy Maine (1:14 AM)
At this point, Dirk does. LeBron hasn't done much this series to make me think he even wants one.
Tom [via mobile]
As much as I dislike lebron I really don't look forward to listening to 3 days of excessive critism. I guess it comes with the territory...
D'Arcy Maine (1:16 AM)
That it does. I thought listening to the last two days though would fuel LeBron though so we wouldn't be having this same conversation tonight. I'm not sure if it does anything to motivate him. I know he's listening.
Jonathan( miami, fl) [via mobile]
Do you think the heat will be more comfortable playing at home and have more of a chance to win the championship in miami?
D'Arcy Maine (1:19 AM)
They hadn't lost a game at home this postseason until Game 2 so they obviously feel very comfortable playing there. Not sure what their mental state collectively will be heading into Sunday's game but I think there chance for a W automatically improves on their home court.
D'Arcy Maine (1:24 AM)
Some of the recent comments coming in make me think it's time to wrap this chat up before I accidentally hit post on something that would get me fired. Thanks though to the majority of you for bringing some great questions and observations. I'll be back on Sunday night from Miami to chat before Game 6. Hope to see you there! Until then.
