Mark "Guru" Garrow (2:55 PM)
Good afternoon everyone...it's a beautiful day in God's country...so let's get this partaaayyyy started!
dan (washington dc)
Who are the top 4 drivers at michigan tht you think will finish the best??/ In what order???
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:00 PM)
Well Dan this would be a good chance for me to get my top-30 rankings out there first thing. Last August, Roush ruled the day and they weren't running as well then as they are now. That's why I have Edwards and Kenseth in my top three. Hamlin was very good last week and finished first and second at Michigan in 2010, which is why I have ranked second and the resurgent Jeff Gordon at number four.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:00 PM)
Here's the top-30 pre-race rankings...1.Carl Edwards2.Denny Hamlin3.Matt Kenseth4.Jeff Gordon5.Jimmie Johnson6.Greg Biffle7.Kurt Busch8.Kevin Harvick9.Dale Earnhardt, Jr.10.Tony Stewart11.Mark Martin12.Ryan Newman13.David Ragan14.Kyle Busch15.Joey Logano16.Juan Pablo Montoya17.Clint Bowyer18.Martin Truex, Jr.19.Kasey Kahne20.Brian Vickers21.Marcos Ambrose22.Jeff Burton23.David Reutimann24.Paul Menard25.Brad Keselowski26.Regan Smith27.A.J. mike p (danbury ct)
do u think the 22 is going to be good enough to win this week/IF NOTHOW what about the 17,31,33,39,5,29.rank them what do u think?tahnks
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:02 PM)
I've just given you my top-30 Mike to get your rankings. As for the 2, I think Kurt Busch is going to be very competitive as he has been in recent weeks, but I don't think he wins. I think the Fords have the most horsepower and that will rule the day as long as fuel mileage doesn't come into play. I think Busch ends up maybe as low as fifth and no higher than tenth.
Guru the name of the game is to make your team better each week. However, I have kept 11-24-29-31-16 from the start of the second segment. Teams that trade drivers without locking down at least 3 drivers at a lower price are in a lot of trouble, for the remainder of seg 2. This happened to me last year. I moved my team each week and by week 4 my goose was cooked. You may want to try this, I have noticed your teams are not as good as last season. However you are the GURU and that is why I love you.... Still rollin with 11-29-16-24-31..
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:07 PM)
Right or wrong, I feel it's my duty to change up my team each week, to make people think about what are the possibilities. That does usually put me in a bad spot after awhile, but that's okay. One of the years, under an assumed name, I'm going to go all out to win. More than one player has pointed out my "flawed" strategy but I want to do what's best for all the players, not me. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind putting up a good score, but my number one job is to help all of you no matter what league or game you're playing, pick the best team you can. Now, on paper your team should be okay but the 31 just can't get a top-10. Maybe this week is the week they breakthrough.
Tyler (Minnesota )
Joey Logano has a pretty good record at Michigan and coming off a decent run at Pocono is his worth a start this week?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:09 PM)
I'm like you Tyler. I think Logano could be a very good sleeper pick because of the two points you just made. That's why he has a pre-race ranking of 15, which is way higher than I've normally had him this year. I think the key is that he had a solid, if not unspectacular run last week at Pocono. That same kind of performance at Michigan will net him a ninth to 15th place finish this Sunday.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who do you think will win the Alliance Patrs 250 & the Helvua Goods Dips 400 at Michigan?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:10 PM)
I'm going to go out on a limb and pick Elliott Sadler for Saturday and Carl Edwards on Sunday.
AAA Rock NC [via mobile]
Can the 20 be considered to take this weekend? 43 and 9 have had issues lately. What say u? Thanks
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:12 PM)
Again, I think you could be on to something with Logano. Gibbs has plenty of horsepower, Logano did well there last year, and is coming off a decent run at Pocono. I think that all adds up to a solid Sunday. As for the 9 and 43, Roush Fords should be up front and that usually means they tow along the Richard Petty duo. However, both of those guys have burned me and many others lately because they can't put together a complete, green flag to checkered flag performance. So, this week Logano has the edge going in.
Nick Rolando (Orlando)
Mark, hope everything is going good buddy. Got my pre-lim lineups set for MIS: Y!: 99-88-4-6 and ESPN: 99-17-16-6-47. Thoughts? For the ESPN one should I trade down to grab the 21 and then go up to grab the 48 or 88 to replace someone?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:17 PM)
No real issues with the Yahoo team except to say 4 and 6 haven't been very consistent.. As for the ESPN team. I like it until you get to the 47. What has Labonte done this year? He could be good for maybe a top-20 but a Regan Smith, who's also been very inconsistent, has more upside in the same price range..do you have enough for Vickers or Logano? The 21 is a possibility, but remember that's a dead pick for next week at Sonoma.
Rick ma [via mobile]
Guru, i think the 24 and 11 will finish in the top ten for the chase. I'm looking at the 33,39,42,16,4 fighting for the wildcards. What do you think?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:20 PM)
The 24 is only six points out of tenth place, which is being held by Ryan Newman. That team is certainly on shaky ground..but who else do you see dropping out of the top-10? As for the wild card spot...I think Hamlin might end up using one of those spots..and you're forgetting about Brad Keselowski. He's currently what 22nd just 13 points behind 20th place Martin Truex, Jr. With his Kansas win, if he gets into the top-20 he could take one of the two spots unless somebody in your group or Hamlin jumps up and wins a couple of races.
hey mark, how do you see Carl faring this weekend? Michigan has always been a kind track to him and he did debut in the cup series here a few years ago and has seemingly always gotten strong finishes here.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:22 PM)
I have him ranked number one because he's been good at Michigan consistently and so has Roush Fenway Racing. They put all of four of their drivers in the top-11 a year ago as they finished I believe fourth, fifth, and sixth, and eleventh and they weren't nearly as strong as they are now.
howdy mr. guru garrow, who do you see possibly see as dark horses this weekend, my guy says Logano and Vickers may each grab a top 10-15 place finish here. Vickers has a win and some poles here and Joey's got some top 10s to his credit, what say you guru?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:24 PM)
We're friends Steve...forget the "Mr."..go with Mark or Guru...I like Logano and Vickers this weekend as well..Vickers isn't quite back to the form he was before the blood clot issue but he's rounding into form and before that deal Michigan was probably his best track. You could do worse than to use those two drivers as your budget picks this week. Not sure how much help they'll give you at Sonoma, but this week they should be pretty strong in my opinion.
29,22,42,20,34,36 ik 34,36 not good but used all good c drivers
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:26 PM)
Is Bayne not a "C" driver? Let me know what the other possibilities are and I'll look for it to add to my answer.
Is this a Ford weekend ... Or did the hendrick team make a statement last week at Pocono that says, "Look out for all our cars except for the 5?" Also, is this a good weekend for the "Saucy Aussie" to gather a top ten and a win at Infineon? Thanks Brother Mark!!
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:29 PM)
I think it will be a Ford weekend, but I also think Hendrick, led by Gordon, Johnson, and Junior, should be pretty stout Sunday afternoon. I think the Rousch cars are poised to have a big day, which might lift Ambrose up. If you already have Ambrose you might want to hold on to him and pray, knowing how strong he'll be at Sonoma. It's a risk though because this team hasn't really done anything lately.
You really think Elliot Sadler is going to beat Kyle and Carl in the nationwide race?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:31 PM)
Ryan, I said I was going out on a limb and should have added I was also "daring to be great"..lol...It could also be the Vicodin I'm taking for my bum back :)...KHI has been getting closer to beating the Roush gang and when Elliott was driving Cup this used to be a very good track for him...So, we'll see.
Jim (El Paso, TX)
Mark - Do you see the #21 cracking the top 20 or top 15 this weekend?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:33 PM)
It's a possibility for sure because Bayne didn't look like he missed a beat in his first Nationwide race back at Chicagoland. Then, he had the luxury of an off week to get ready to double duty this weekend and that should help as well. I'd say top-20 is a good place to start for him this week and I just noticed I left him out of the top-30 rankings...got to fix that.
By the way, I have "road" driven Dodges for 34 years and I must say that I love the engines that they offer in every vehicle. From the Cummins Turbo to the 5.2L Small block
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:34 PM)
I'm glad you feel that way about it KR..and I'm sure the folks at Dodge love hearing that too.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:45 PM)
Joanie, there are no irrelevant questions. That second car for Baldwin will not be a start and park for five races. They have sponsorship from some company Lucas Medical and I'm sure that's a money deal put together by Geoffrey Bodine. He lives in Florida these days and Lucas is headquartered there so that might be how the two connected. Geoff is what 62 so this is not a long term thing, but he's a good guy and still in decent shape so hopefully he makes the race and that will bring Tommy Baldwin the extra money he needs to keep building that team and makes things better for Blaney in the process.
I was wrong about Kahne this past Sunday. I'm starting to lose hope. No wins since 09'. I know greener pastures are ahead, but come on, man. The last two years have been effing miserable.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:47 PM)
Easy on the language Taylor my deal is GP all the way, but I can understand your frustration. On paper, he should be pretty competitive this weekend, but heaven knows where he'll end up. If he and/or Vickers don't have strong runs Sunday I'm going to write off the Red Bull team for awhile..
Thanks, Mark! Awesome for TBR and Geoffrey - I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do!
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:49 PM)
You got it and take care up there in Michigan.
Yahoo is liking Kahne a lot this weekend, but betting on Kahne is like betting on an NBA preseason game. Is Sunday going to be a Roushfest?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:52 PM)
Betting on Kahne might not be like betting on NBA preseason game..it's more like lately betting on Lebron James to come through in the fourth quarter...Kahne and company have been decent to good in large chunks of races only to let it fall to pieces in the latter stages..I feel like Sunday should be a Roushfest. He put all four cars in the top-11 a year ago and this team is much stronger now than it was then.
Speaking of Kahne fading, is this a Kenny Francis thing or a Kasey Kahne thing? Or both? Do you think he's not communicating well enough to keep up with tracks changing or do you think Kenny is calling for the wrong adjustments? It's frustrating being a Kahne fan. Also, for spending most of my life in Dallas and working for the Dallas Mavericks up until February, I'm a huge fan. Therefore, comparing my favorite driver to LBJ hurts. I do understand the comparison, though. At least one of my squads pulled it through.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:00 PM)
The difference in Kasey and LBJ is that Kasey's not choking at the end..I think Kenny Francis has made a big difference in making Red Bull more competitive as a team and Vickers/Pemberton combo will tell you that. It's hard to pinpoint any major issues. He ran out of gas leading at Charlotte..so they aren't far off...Keep the faith they have some good tracks coming up starting with Michigan this weekend. If neither of those cars don't run well this weekend then I'd start to worry more.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:01 PM)
Thanks everybody..remember our Sunday chat is 9:30 for Michigan race...until then have a great week. Sad to say it but must "The Guru has left the building"!
