Andrew Feldman (3:59 PM)
Hey everyone. Another crazy day in the poker industry...send in your questions and we'll get started in a few!
Tim (Parts Unknown)
Can you address your controversial appearance in the new ESPN book?
Andrew Feldman (4:01 PM)
So controversial. Had no idea I was in there, but I'm glad they took the picture and that moment and not a few moments later when I was taking a bite of my sandwich. Appreciate that hidden photographer.
your initial reaction to the ftp drama today?
Andrew Feldman (4:03 PM)
Uggg. I think that was my initial reaction. I'm really shocked it took Alderney this long to take action though. I mentioned on Inside Deal a week or two afterwards that this was a possibility...violate the laws in one place where you operate, the licensing agency needs to take a deeper look at your company.
Can you shed any insight onto what is going on with Full Tilt today?
Andrew Feldman (4:06 PM)
One of my sources in Dublin said they didn't know this was happening today and the PR agency refused to comment on the issue...which is not a shock. Alderney made this decision based on their own investigation.
With the news that FT is being shut down, what does that do to the chances of us being paid out?
Andrew Feldman (4:09 PM)
I wish I knew. I have known that for weeks the decision makers have been in Dublin trying to work this out and late last week they hit a major issue after things were heading in the right direction. With them being shut down they have no income coming in and it will be hard for them to sell to an investor to be able to get back in the game. I'm not optimistic, but really, this is just my assumption and there could be additional inner dealings that could remedy the problem sooner...or later...
I thought of asking this question today before it hit the fan, but it seems more relevant now: With the way Poker Stars has handled things post Black Friday, what odds would you give them of returning to the US when legislation is finally passed?
Andrew Feldman (4:11 PM)
I honestly and truly can't believe that PS sent out a press release today saying that they're doing just fine. All that did was rub salt in the wounds of FTP. That said, they're still under investigation. Whether or not they paid back players is irrelevant if they committed the crimes they are accused of. I still doubt you'll see Stars in the US for the first few years (or more) after legislation passes
Is it safe to say the AB/UB will have the same fate as FTP
Andrew Feldman (4:13 PM)
AB/UP would have to have its own licensing agency take action.
What's the reaction of the players at the table of the FT shutdown? Sounds like they've had a few hours to digest it before tourney play began today ...
Andrew Feldman (4:14 PM)
I believe it's basically shock, surprise and disappointment. Despite the negativity surrounding FTP, players were slightly optimistic that they'd get paid eventually. I think this was just the final straw for most.
JB (River Forest)
Where can we read this news on FTP outside of a poker site? I do not even see it on ESPN. I am looking for a site that is not blocked and SFW.
Andrew Feldman (4:15 PM)
I'm hoping to have a writeup on it shortly. I'm sorry for the delay.
Could the reason for PS to put out the press release have more to do with the fact that they are re-assuring their current players they have no problems, because they are licensed by a different entity?
Andrew Feldman (4:18 PM)
That was their top level intent, to reassure players outside the US that they are OK. I'm used to their releases and this one actually mentions FTP by name...which is not typical.
Hi Andrew. Do you think the issues with FT will impact Ferguson and Lederer ever getting into the Poker HOF? Would you ever vote either in?
Andrew Feldman (4:19 PM)
If you asked me who would probably be the next players inducted a year ago, I'd say these two were probably among the top...as players, they are great and talented, but it's going to be hard for the committee to look past this until there's a resolution. All that is said with the understanding that nobody knows the exact roles of the duo with FTP.
Tell us more about the Epic Poker League, will tournies be televised, is Espn covering it?
Andrew Feldman (4:20 PM)
There will be a TV partner, but it hasn't been announced yet. ESPN will not be televising the Epic Poker league.
How safe can it really be to have money on any poker site regardless of where in the world you live. If I had money that I cared about anywhere in the world, I would be tempted to remove it and play live only forever.
Andrew Feldman (4:20 PM)
I am not advising in any sort of way that it is a smart decision to play online in the US right now.
Andrew Feldman (4:21 PM)
Ok, need to clarify - that doesn't include subscription sites or play-for-free platforms.
Adrian O'Sullivan (Dublin, Ireland)
Hi Andrew, in light of the news today that Full Tilt's licence has been revoked entirely, what poker networks are safe (for now) to deposit with in Europe?
Andrew Feldman (4:21 PM)
There's a variety of sites that will benefit from today's shutdown, but most likely Stars and Party will just get bigger.
Annie Duke said about the Epic League, terrible name imo, ?For a $40 investment, anyone can have a shot at the glory on a national stage, a million dollars and poker?s most exclusive title,That opportunity is unmatched in poker.? Has she not heard of a gentlemen by the name of Chris Moneymaker?
Andrew Feldman (4:22 PM)
Not an epic name. I don't understand why they went that route...they had a lot of positive momentum going for the league...until that name. I almost like FS+G better.
Matt Waldron (Miami)
How will the effective shutdown of FTP affect non-US sponsored player's ability to compete? Since numbers have not been affected (nay, improved) in the post Black Friday WSOP -- will this have any effect at all? Also, is Gary Wise ever showing up at the WSOP?
Andrew Feldman (4:24 PM)
Gary Will be present for the final week of the main event. As far as players, you know as well as I do it's going to be really tough for all FTP players from here on out. The paycheck that may have been coming for foreign players is probably stopped as well and really, didn't it seem inevitable? I still think that it hurts the poker economy as there will be less $$ for players to be put in events and thus, less $$ in the poker economy.
Andrew (Minneapolis, MN)
So before last nights final table, didn't even know the "Magician" was playing. Had he been struggling before last night in WSOP?
Andrew Feldman (4:26 PM)
First cash of the Series, and not a bad one. Esfandiari always has a lot going on and putting in tournament volume isn't his priority at times.
Toby Tyler (Dallas)
Any thoughts on Rep Joe Barton's bill to legalize?
Andrew Feldman (4:29 PM)
I think that it has potential. There are some great opportunities in the bill and if its passed, things can mobilize relatively quickly, which is really important at this stage. The sooner there's a bill, the bigger the industry will be. The longer it takes for the industry to become legalized, the less people will return to the game.
Howard L (Vegas)
Today made it even harder for me to leave a restaurant, huh?
Andrew Feldman (4:30 PM)
I would be shocked if you are still in the states.
Andrew Feldman (4:30 PM)
Ok, thanks for all the questions today! Talk to everyone tomorrow!
