Beano Cook (3:03 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome to the latest chat. We still have a few months before the great sport of college football kicks off, the 143rd season. It should be a very good one. Ready for your questions.
Beano, your take on the Michael Floyd situation. Even as an ND fan I think he should get at least 3 games. Multiple offenses and little real punishment yet.
Beano Cook (3:05 PM)
First of all, he will probably be suspended for the first game. I feel he should not be suspended at all. He is a member of the team and he was placed on probation today. It will be up to coach Brian Kelly but I would not suspend him. By the way, a note about Notre Dame. When they left the CFA contract, they said they wanted the home games on NBC to start at 1:30. This season, none of their home games start at 1:30. Doesn't that say something.
Phillip (A stadium near you)
Beano, thank you for all your insight about college football.I had the pleasure of visiting the college football hall of fame, what a great place.what are your thoughts of it moving to Atlanta and who do you think should be in the hall that maybe is off the radar of modern fans?
Beano Cook (3:08 PM)
I have no real opinion about the Hall of Fame moving or not. I do not know if it is success in South Bend. It is not exactly a tourist attraction like Las Vegas is. The only reason to go to South Bend is a NOtre Dame football game. There are a lot of players who are not in the College Football Hall of Fame that will eventually make it. They induct a huge class every year now.
What did you think of Joe Paterno and Coach K doing a show together? Kinda cool, wasn't it?
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
I did not see it but I thought it was a great idea to put it together. That is the type of program that ESPN should do more of.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
Beano, will you be attending the Nebraska-Penn State game in November? I know you remember those great games in the early 80s and it could Joe PAs last home game.
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
I will not be at the game. I do remember the 1982 game. The officials really stuck it to Nebraska. That will be a great rivalry. It should develop into something special and they will play each other every year.
Sean (Pensacola, FL)
Beano! Not to beat a dead horse, but Rittenberg said something that go me thinking. He praised Ohio State's defensive excellence, but don't you think that Ohio State just has the better, faster players, in the slowest conference? That really doesn't impress me. Your thoughts? I like Wisconsin to win the Big 10 BTW
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
I think right now with the addition of Nebraska, the Big Ten is the second toughest conference behind the SEC. The SEC is still way ahead, they have five teams that could win the Big Ten but the Big Ten doesn't have a team that could win the SEC! Would you pick any Big Ten team to win the SEC? Come on.
Jason (Elkins WV)
Beano...you once told the nation that Tony Sacca would win the Heisman trophy...... Why are you still being asked to predict anything?
Beano Cook (3:14 PM)
That's a good question. I am glad you remember the Penn State quarterback.
Beano Cook (3:14 PM)
You are entitled to your opinion but so am I. Then aain, I know you would never be wrong.
Why is Army football so special to you? I know you have talked about it a lot in the past.
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
All three academies are very special to me. Each one has contributed a lot more to this country than any individual college. Army has produced some great tradition. I have said it many times, as a football fan, you should do whatever you can to see an Army-Navy football game. The pagentry and emotion is something really special.
Mark (Destin, FL)
I'm a Seminole fan and many people have differing opinions of what their season will be this year. Are you high on them or do you think they're another year or two away from doing much more than possibly winning the ACC?
Beano Cook (3:18 PM)
Call me after th Oklahoma game. That is one of the best early-season games in 2011. Ivan Maisel, Senior Writer of espn.com, picked Florida State and Oklahoma to meet in the BCS title game. My choice is Oklahoma vs. Georgia, subject to change in August. This will be an interesting season for Jimbo Fisher as some people have great expectations.
Mark (Destin, FL)
What do you think of Russell Wilson going to Wiscy? Is it a good fit OR will it be a bust like Musoli was at Ole Miss?
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
A very good observation on your part. Jermiah Masoli's decision to go to Mississippi did not particularly work well. Wilson may have a problem meshing and the chemistry with new players could be an issue. That said, I think it will work out in Madison. Wilson is a very good athlete who can run and throw and he has been in pressure situations while at NC State. I like this situation. If the chemistry is there, the Badgers could be the Big Ten favorites.
Nancy (Thomasville, GA)
I hated to see Georgia have such a poor year last year. Somehow though I think Richt has instilled some new energy into the program and his recruitting may pay off this year. Is it crazy for me to think they'll have a much improved year?
Beano Cook (3:23 PM)
No because I have them in the national title game. That is not my final prediction, which I will make in late August. We will see.
Alan (Your Mom's House)
Hi Beano. I just wanted to know what it is like having all of your "opinions" controlled by ESPN so that you can help them benefit from the corporate monopoly that they have over all sports? How much of the $5 billion contract with the SEC do you get for stroking them gently? Do you get a bonus if you bash the other conferences? I bet you do - probably helps you get the presciption drugs you need for being delusional. Thanks for helping to ruin the media coverage on sports!!
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
I guess I am not going to get a Christmas present from you.
Drew (Canton, GA)
As I recall you once said Dennis Erickson is one of the top 5 coaches in the game. Do you still believe that in light of the twitter comments from previous players floating around.
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
Number one, at the time he was. He is not one of the top five coaches in the last 30 years, but what he did at Miami, winning two national titles and playing for a third was pretty impressive.
How has the Heisman Trophy race changed over the years? It seems like nobody had Cam Newton in the preseason hype last year? Who are your favorites this season ahead?
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
The obvious favorite is Andrew Luck from Stanford after he decided to return to school. Stanford will not go 11-1 again; I feel the Cardinal will lose two or three games. Kellen Moore of Boise State will get some hype. Trent Richardson of Alabama is a pretty good back who will get some recognition. LaMichael James and Marcus Lattimore of South Carolina come to mind as well.
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
By the way, I feel sad. Kojak is gone, McGarrett too. Now Columbo is gone too.
Cheesehead Sports Nut (Chicago, IL)
Expansion is great in terms of revenue but really hurts certain regional rivalries. Simple example, how much of a bummer is it that Wisconsin and Iowa are no longer going to play every year?
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
Generally certain rivalries are hurt. To fans across the country , they know Ohio State-Michigan but may not know as much about Iowa-Wisconsin. I understand what you are saying. I am one guy who knows a lot about tradition so I totally understand what you are saying.
Mitch (Bama Country)
I understand your appreciation for Georgia this year. I too think they'll be VERY improved from last year but I just don't see them being better than Bama or LSU this year. You obviously do?
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
Yes. They only have to be better than one of those two teams. Alabama or LSU will be the favorite to play for the SEC West title. Just my opinion, that's all.
Moki Dugway (Chicago)
In all your years of following college football, what venue have you never been to that you would most like to see a big game at?
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
LSU at night. That would be exciting.
Terrell (Eglin AFB, FL)
Talk to me about my Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Can I expect more mediocrity from Paul Johnson's team or will he turn it around this year?
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
Should get off to a good start as their schedule in September is favorable. The injury to the quarterback hurt last season. I think Tech can bounce back from last season's disappointment.
Kirk (East Lansing, MI)
Beano, do the Spartants have a legitimate shot to win the conference, or will the schedule simply prove to difficult?
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
I don't think it is the schedule as much as it should be a down year compared to last season. Michigan State will probably lose three games.
Knile Davis (Arkansas)
Will I prove to everyone this year that I'm the best RB in the SEC and possibly the country?
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
With Richardson and Lattimore in the league, some people may not look at Davis the way they should.
Sonny (Calhoun, TN)
Beano, your one of the best on ESPN. Thanks for your insight. Do you think Dana Holgerson will right the ship at West Virginia? What a fiasco all that was.
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
It was a fiasco. I don't know whether he will or not. He does get LSU at Morgantown and the Mountaineers are playing some pretty good non-conference teams. I don't think the fact he became head coach late will not affect much. I thought the way they handled the situation with Bill Stewart was poorly done.
Brett (Panama City, FL)
Best young coach in football not named Peterson is...?
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
Al Golden of Miami.
Mike (Los Angeles, CA)
Do you think that Urban Meyer would take the Ohio State job if he had the opportunity?
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
By the way, a message to Alana...get a life
love the chats, also a huge arkansas fan, if the hogs go into tuscaloosa and win that game, do you see them winning the west and going to atlanta and what are the realistic odds of them winning the bama game?
Beano Cook (3:48 PM)
They have a shot. They could have won the game against Alabama last year but they blew it in the second half.
Mike (Los Angeles, CA)
Don't let a nasty poster get you down. Alan is just your typical anonymous internet coward.
Beano Cook (3:48 PM)
Yaris (Monterrey, CA)
When you look at Oregon's RB's James, Barner, and Seastrunk you gotta be impressed. Is there a better trio anywhere else?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
I would say that is a pretty good trio. Alabama potentially could be right there. It may be the best trio since the Kingston Trio!
Alan (Your Mom's House)
Sorry, man. The ESPN bias just really gets me going - it makes me sick how monopolized sports has become and the only thing that makes me feel better is harrassing you.
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
I am simply giving my opinions, that is all.
Marcus (The U.)
How will Miami do this season?
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
They hired an excellent coach in Al Golden. The resolution of the QB situation will be interesting to watch. Miami will be competitive because I have fsith in Golden. It may take him a little time to adjust to the new program.
Beano - Who are your top Three WR's this year?
Beano Cook (3:54 PM)
Justin Blackman of Oklahoma State had a great year and is back again, as is Ryan Broyles of Oklahoma. Michael Floyd of Notre Dame could be up there if he is back.
Jason (Moon Twp)
Beano, do you still have the Seahawks shirt that was sent to you by a radio station out there, and do you ever get jeered in the Burgh because of it?
Beano Cook (3:56 PM)
I do wear the shirt and the Seahawks did send them to me. I do not get kidded by Steelers fans. Thanks for your questions, see you next on July 27th at 3 pm ET for another chat.
