Tuesdays with Mobile: Return of the NFL
John Pez (1:01 PM)
Let's dive right into this NFL madness now that we are close to being unlocked. So much stuff going on. The free agent pool is deep. The moves will come fast and furious once the lockout is lifted. Assuming this is close to being settled, let's spend the next 3 hours talking NFL.Here we go.
Derek from Indiana [via mobile]
What positions or players should the Ravens go after in FA
John Pez (1:07 PM)
Derek gets us started with the Ravens. OK, Derek let's see, the Ravens addressed a much-needed CB with the selection of Colorado's Jimmy Smith in the first round and also drafted Maryland WR Torrey Smith. On the free agent front, they tagged Haloti Ngata, but would probably like to sign him to a multi-year deal. Along the offensive line, retaining Marshall Yanda, who can play guard and tackle, is important. I think they will let safety Dawan Landry walk. He's a solid in-the-box-tackler, but doesn't excel in coverage. They expect Domonique Foxworth to return from his serious knee injury. I really think the keys will be to re-sign Yanda, lock up Ngata long-term, rely on the return of Foxworth and the addition of Smith to improve the secondary and for Zbikowski to step in and replace Landry.
Jacob Soretire shakopee mn [via mobile]
Who should the vikings go after once free agency open?
John Pez (1:13 PM)
Well Jacob the Vikings have quite a free agent trio in Chad Greenway, Ray Edwards and Sidney Rice. I think it's a given that Edwards will depart. In that case, finding an end to complement Jared Allen will be important. Adding a veteran QB like Donovan McNabb or Carson Palmer to start for a year or two while Christian Ponder develops should be a priority. A defensive tackle to play next to Kevin Williams and a safety to replace disappointing Madieu Williams will be on the shopping list. Eric Weddle is a possibility at safety. If the Vikes lose Rice, they may go after Braylon Edwards or Malcolm Floyd.
lee pa [via mobile]
U think Dallas should go after another safety bc let's face it the position has been weak since darren woodson retired.
John Pez (1:18 PM)
It's been very weak, Lee. I don't know why Gerald Sensabaugh thinks he's going to get big bucks on the open market. He was average at best for the Cowboys last year. I think the priority will be cornerback for the Cowboys with the targets being Asomugha, Jonathan Joseph, Antonio Cromartie, Carlos Rogers. But Donte Whitner or Eric Weddle at safety should also pique Dallas' interest. Now the Cowboys are more than $18 million over the projected salary cap. So look for Marion Barber and Roy Williams to get released, but that's not enough for the Cowboys to get under the cap unless they cut some more guys, including tackle Marc Colombo.
Omar (Florida) [via mobile]
Any way the Eagles can sign Nnamdi Asomugha?
John Pez (1:20 PM)
Omar, I'm sure they would love to pair Asomugha with Asante. But the price will skyrocket for Asomugha, so they may be better off targeting CB Jonathan Joseph and WR Plaxico Burress. They will also need to spend to retain LB Stewart Bradley.
Francisco Cantu [via mobile]
Do you think that go after Kolb its a good option for Buffalo or they need to wait and reach Luck next year?
John Pez (1:25 PM)
Francisco, it seems that Kevin Kolb to Arizona is the likely scenario. Chan Gailey feels comfortable with Ryan Fitzpatrick to the point where the Bills passed on QBs like Dalton and Kaepernick in the 2nd round of the draft. If they get Luck-Y next year, then that means the team will finish 2-14 this season.
keith california [via mobile]
what should Giants do with Plaxico Buress?
John Pez (1:30 PM)
Keith, Plax will not return to the Giants. So look for Plax to sign with either Philly, Miami, Tampa Bay or the Jets. As for the Giants, they selected Jernigan from Troy in the 3rd round in the hopes he could play in the slot and step in for Steve Smith, who is coming off a knee injury and is a free agent as well. Hakeem Nicks is the big target now and the Giants also need to re-sign tight end Kevin Boss. But the priority for the Giants will be not to lose their best running back Ahmad Bradshaw, who is also unrestricted.
Brad (Ohio) [via mobile]
Ahmad Bradshaw would be a much better fit for the Dolphins than Reggie Bush. What do you think? What other free agents should they target?
John Pez (1:32 PM)
Brad picks up on the Ahmad Bradshaw market. Yes if the Dolphins lose both Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams (and they probably will), then Bradshaw is the more durable back than Reggie Bush. DeAngelo Williams is another possibility for Miami, especially since I expect the Giants to pay a heavy price to retain Bradshaw, even if it means cutting Brandon Jacobs.
Anthony Staten Island NY [via mobile]
What do the Jets do when free agency begins? I would like them to keep Holmes and Edwards first than Cromartie and Brad Smith. What do you think?
John Pez (1:37 PM)
Anthony, I think GM Mike Tannenbaum will make bringing back Santonio Holmes and Antonio Cromartie a priority. They put the franchise tag on LB David Harris. But I think it's likely there might not be enough money to retain Braylon Edwards, Shaun Ellis and Brad Smith. But if you had to pick just two to keep, it would be Holmes and Cromartie. There is speculation that the Redskins will make a big pitch for Santonio Holmes. Then the Jets will probably look into the possibility of adding Plaxico Burress or Randy Moss.
Collin (Washington, D.C) [via mobile]
Is Plaxico to the Eagles a foregone conclusion? Our receiving corps is already one of the fastest and most talented in the league. Why not target Logan Mankins or someone to bolster the power run game that seems to be lacking?
John Pez (1:43 PM)
Collin, it's not a foregone conclusion, especially since a team like the Buccaneers, who can use some more targets for Josh Freeman, are more than $55 million under the salary cap. That's right, more than $55 million. So they can go nuts in this feeding frenzy. But the Eagles clearly like the dimension that Plax's size gives them in the red zone. DeJean Jax and Jeremy Mac are fast, but not huge targets. Remember that interception Vick threw in the end zone vs. the Packers (intended receiver was Riley Cooper, how did that happen?) But I digress. Yeh, Plax's size gives Vick the ability to loft lob passes without fear of the interception that bit him in the playoff loss to the Packers. Mankins would be a great fit for any team, but the Eagles will rely on 1st-round pick Danny Watkins to improve the line.
johnathan (SC) [via mobile]
What do you think the chances are that John Fox will lobby for De'angelo Williams to play in a Denver Broncos uniform and go back to the run game? A Bronco fan watching his team without a run game, when we were known for pounding the ball, is like a day without sunshine.
John Pez (1:47 PM)
Good Day Sunshine. I bet John Fox wishes Josh McDaniels didn't trade Peyton Hillis for Brady Quinn. Then the Broncos would be set in the backfield with Hillis and Moreno. But after Fox used the draft to improve the defense with Von Miller, Rahim Moore, Nate Irving and Quinton Carter and the offensive line with Orlando Franklin, I think he will make a pitch to sign DeAngelo.
Tom (NH) [via mobile]
Since the patriots seemingly passed on defense in this years draft, is there anyone that would fit into belichek's scheme and the pat's organization?
John Pez (1:54 PM)
Tom, I would think that an edge rusher like Jason Babin would fit the system. He had 12 1/2 sacks last season for the Titans in Jeff Fisher's scheme. In the draft, the Pats added a physical corner in Ras-I Dowling in the 2nd round. Then again, doesn't Belichick always add DBs in the early rounds (see Meriweather, Chung, Wheatley,Wilhite, etc)
Justun DE [via mobile]
Would vincent jackson be a good fit for the redskins if he now becomes a unrestricted free agent after the lockout is over?
John Pez (1:56 PM)
Justun, the Redskins would have plenty of WR options, headlined by Sidney Rice and Santonio Holmes. Also, Plaxico Burress, Braylon Edwards and possibly Ochocinco, or is he back to Chad Johnson again, if the Bengals do not pick up his contract option. VJax wants too much money, which is why the Chargers could never come to an agreement with him.
Matt (Detroit) [via mobile]
Since the Lions drafted value over need in this draft. Who are the free agents the Lions should go after to fill their holes in the defensive's back 7?
John Pez (2:04 PM)
Matt, Nnamdi Asomugha, Johnathan Joseph and Dominique Cromartie at cornerback, Eric Weddle at safety should be targeted in the secondary. Signing MLB Barrett Ruud to play behind tackles Suh and Fairley would be ideal. Stewart Bradleyand Paul Posluszny are also possibilities at linebacker.
Thomas fort morgan co [via mobile]
Will tebow be a starter once orton is traded and we need a rb and who would be the best for the team for the rb
John Pez (2:06 PM)
Yes, Tebow will get the starting job if and when Orton is traded. You would think John Fox would go to one of his former Carolina backs DeAngelo Williams to join him in Denver.
Joe (Chicago) [via mobile]
What do u think the bears will get first in the F A market is getting a line men or w r more important and who you think that guy will be.
John Pez (2:10 PM)
Joe, after drafting Gabe Carimi in the first round, I think the Bears will make finding a receiver to complement Hester and Knox a priority. Perhaps a Braylon Edwards or Malcolm Floyd can sign at the right price for the Bears, who made a huge free agent splash last year with the signing of Peppers.
Dee ... Pittsburgh,Pa [via mobile]
what do the steelers do
John Pez (2:15 PM)
Dee, the Steelers put the franchise tag on LB LaMarr Woodley and were negotiating with CB Ike Taylor before the lockout. So re-signing Taylor has to be a priority, but the Steelers have expressed reservations with committing too many years to a 31-year-old CB. The offensive line may be bolstered by the return of tackle Willie Colon (also a free agent), who missed the 2010 season with a knee injury. This team is normally quiet on the free agent front and I don't expect this year to be any different. Look for them to just re-sign Taylor.
Greg Virginia [via mobile]
Where do you think Jaguars should start on defense first?
John Pez (2:19 PM)
Greg, the Jaguars need to upgrade at middle linebacker (Kirk Morrison was disappointing), soBarrett Ruud or Paul Posluszny should be targeted.Safety has been a major problem, so Eric Weddle may be pursued.
Michael California [via mobile]
Who should the Raiders target in free agency?
John Pez (2:25 PM)
Michael, the bad news is that the Raiders are $10 million over the projected salary cap and that is with them opting out of Asomugha's contract (he would have been owed $16.875 million in 2011). They did re-sign DE Richard Seymour, but TE Zach Miller is a free agent. So don't expect much movement from the Raiders.
Bremerton WA [via mobile]
Any news on Hasselbeck? Where do the Hawks go from here?
John Pez (2:31 PM)
Well, ESPN's Tim Hasselbeck seems to think that his brother Matt will stay with Seattle. Spent the offseason beefing up the right side of the offensive line with the draft selections of Alabama T James Carpenter and Wisconsin G John Moffitt. So look for Hasselbeck and Whitehurst atQB, but this team could use help at WR (deep pool with Santonio Holmes, Sidney Rice, Santana Moss,Braylon Edwards, Plaxico Burress, etc.)
jeremy,fosston,minnesota [via mobile]
who should the Falcons target in FA, and is their defense as bad as it looked against the Packers in last years playoffs, or is it their offense?...
John Pez (2:44 PM)
Jeremy, 3rd-round pick Akeem Dent of Georgia is a potential replacement for Stephen Nicholas or Mike Peterson at strongside linebacker. That's it as far as help from the draft is concerned for the defense. They have spent big money on free agents like Michael Turner and Dunta Robinson in previous years, so look for Arthur Blank to get involved for a defensive addition. John Abraham is 33 now, so adding a Charles Johnson (11 1/2 sacks last year) or Jason Babin or Mathias Kiwanuka is a possibility. The offense is fine with Julio Jones there to take the double teams away from Roddy White. Tight end Tony Gonzalez probably has another good year in him.
Ahmadou (St.Louis ) [via mobile]
Who do u think the rams will go after?
John Pez (2:51 PM)
Ahmadou, the Rams need playmakers to help QB Sam Bradford. Added TE Lance Kendricks and WRs Austin Pettis and Greg Salas in the draft, but Bradford needs veteran help at the position. SoSidney Rice, Santonio Holmes, Santana Moss and Plaxico Burress (Spagnuolo was on Giants staff when Plax was there) should be targeted. Need a safety after losing O.J. Atogwe to the Redskins.
Nick (Tampa) [via mobile]
Would it make sense for the bucs to go after safety Dawan Landry?
John Pez (2:54 PM)
Nick, Landry is a solid in-the-box tackler at the position, but greatly benefits from having Ed Reed next to him in Baltimore. He won't have that in Tampa (where the uncertain status of Aqib Talib makes secondary help essential). This team is more than $55 million under the cap so the Bucs can make huge offers to Asomugha and safety Eric Weddle (better in coverage than Landry).
Tony (Fontana) [via mobile]
What do u c the pats doing about Mankins?
John Pez (2:57 PM)
Tony, the Mankins situation is complex. But there is no denying this guy could be the best guard in the NFL. When he returned last year, New England's rushing yards per game improved dramatically. The Pats designated him as a franchise player again, so he really has no leverage unless he gets a special waiver when a new labor agreement is reached.
Kevin Ft.Polk La. [via mobile]
Do the Saints have any interest in Plax?
John Pez (3:01 PM)
Kevin, I would not be surprised if the Saints add a receiver, but I think Plax is more likely to end up in Philly, Miami or Washington. But who knows? Sean Payton may have a surprise in him and with Marques Colston coming off surgery, the Saints just might go after a receiver.
Tony, chicago [via mobile]
Do you see the packers picking anybody up? Not Thompsons style, but wondering if the pack will make a move
John Pez (3:04 PM)
Tony, you're right it's not really Ted Thompson's style to hit the free agent market. He basically builds through the draft and had another good one with the additions of T Derek Sherrod, WR Randall Cobb, RB Alex Green and CB Davon House. Pack will probably lose free agent DE Cullen Jenkins
Mat _houston [via mobile]
Who will the texans go after and do they have any money to make a move with the new cba
John Pez (3:10 PM)
Mat, the Texans do have the money to pursue a CB like Nnamdi Asomugha. CBs Johnathan Joseph,Antonio Cromartie and Carlos Rogers may also be on the radar. Wade Phillips is moving Mario Williams to outside linebacker in this defense and the team added DE J.J. Watt, OLB Brooks Reed and CBs Brandon Harris and Rashad Carmichael in the draft. The addition of a veteran, elite CBlike Asomugha on a defense with Williams and DeMeco Ryans is all this team needs to finally make the playoffs.
jason arizona [via mobile]
Is there a better option out there at mlb for the eagles bradley struggles in coverage and space
John Pez (3:13 PM)
Jason, Barrett Ruud would be ideal for the Eagles to plug in at middle linebacker. But if the Bucs decide they want to keep him, they have more money to play with than the Eagles do under the cap. Paul Posluszny, Penn State alum on the Bills, is another possibility for the Eagles if Bradley walks
Jon DE [via mobile]
Would the Eagles be smart to accept a Kolb for Rogers-Cromartie trade?
John Pez (3:19 PM)
Jon, Kolb is likely headed to Arizona, but the Cards are not parting with their best cornerback in the deal. I would guess the Eagles would receive maybe two 2nd-round picks (similar to whenMatt Schaub was traded from Atlanta to Houston) from the Cards. If Dominique-Rodgers Cromartie were offered, the Eagles probably should jump at that trade. But I doubt that's the case.
zo smith staunton VA [via mobile]
How tha colts goin look this year
John Pez (3:25 PM)
Hey Zo, Polian doesn't spend on the free agent market. He just focuses on re-signing his own. His main free agents are Joseph Addai, safety Melvin Bullitt and OLB Clint Session. Peyton Manning was franchised. Used the draft to help the offensive line with the additions of Anthony Castonzo and Ben Ijalana along with LSU DT DrakeNevis.
alex o [via mobile]
Can the green bay packers repeat?
John Pez (3:28 PM)
Alex, we haven't had a repeat champion since the Pats in 2003 and 2004. When you consider the Pack won the Super Bowl without their best running back Ryan Grant and without tight end JerMichael Finley (both were injured) you would figure they have the personnel to repeat as champions.
Greg (St Paul) [via mobile]
Which rookie QBs do you see having the most playing time?
John Pez (3:34 PM)
Greg, obviously the lockout hurts all of these rookie QBs. The status of Cam Newton, Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder, Andy Dalton, Colin Kaepernick will not be determined until we see if these teams add veteran QBs. But my guess is that Newton starts over Clausen by Week 3. Well we know that Ryan Mallett has no chance of starting.
Mikey Nevada [via mobile]
is the lockout gonna be over today or tomorrow
John Pez (3:36 PM)
Mikey hopefully by Thursday, when the owners have their meeting, we will get an announcement on the lockout being lifted and the rules for free agency. Hopefully, Thursday. Hopefully.
army chris [via mobile]
If the dolphins are in the mindset that henne is done with them would they package vontae davis for kevin kolb?
John Pez (3:39 PM)
No, they love Vontae Davis. Can't trade a cornerback on the rise for a quarterback that is unproven. The Dolphins will sign a running back to replace Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams (both are probably gone)and hope the addition of Pouncey on the line will help the running game.
Steven wa [via mobile]
What do u think the 49ers should do in the F A market
John Pez (3:46 PM)
Harbaugh added a pass rusher in Aldon Smith and QB Colin Kapernick to compete with Alex Smith. Aubrayo Franklin declined last year, so a defensive tackle like a Barry Cofield to play in front of Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis would be ideal. Hopefully, Smith provides a pass rush from the outside linebacker spot that they were hoping would come from Manny Lawson (free agent).Safety Eric Weddle and cornerbacks Johnathan Joseph and Antonio Cromartie could be targeted for the secondary.
Sgt Charlotte nc [via mobile]
With Tampa Bay being so far under the salary cap, but being known for being cheap is it realistic for a true fan to believe that they spend money on a high cost player or players?
John Pez (3:55 PM)
Well, teams will probably have to pay a higher percentage above the salary floor than in the last CBA, so the Bucs will have to spend. So you can expect a major signing or two from the Bucs, who realize with Freeman that they are on the cusp of being a serious threat to the Saints and Falcons in the NFC South.
Aaron from Syracuse [via mobile]
I read today that the Bills are about 30 mil under the new projected nfl cap for this year, and that they have money to spend. Who do you think Buffalo will be going after when free agency opens up?
John Pez (3:59 PM)
Aaron, the Bills will get Posluszny signed probably, but I can't say the same for Donte Whitner and Drayton Florence. Marcell Dareus andcornerback Aaron Williams will immediately improve the defense. Who knows what to expect from Shawne Merriman. They have substantial room under the cap, but convincing a wide receiver to sign there with the rough weather conditions and the QB situation being what it is will be tough since many teams will have plenty of money to spend.
John Pez (4:05 PM)
Well the NFL is close to being back in business. Hopefully, it will be resolved this week. I know from this Tuesdays With Mobile Chat how excited the fans are about the NFL returning. Thanks for your participation and hopefully we will have plenty to chat about in the coming weeks because I know all of you are ready for some football!
