Mark "Guru" Garrow (2:57 PM)
Good afternoon everyone..it's another scorcher here in North Carolina...sweating profusely...let's get this partaaayyyy started!
Tyler (Minnesota )
Kyle hasn't had the greatest success at the Brickyard but is he worth the price this week?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (2:59 PM)
Tyler, I agree his Indy stats are so-so, but he's been on such a roll lately...This team is hitting on all eight cylinders just about every weekend. He was 36th at New Hampshire but before that he was top-five in four of five. I like him to get things turned around at the Brickyard this weekend.
Tyler (Minnesota )
What is the view like from the Pagoda during the race?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:00 PM)
It's realy different that's for sure..because you're really close to the action on the front straight and the pits but a long, long way from turn 2 down to turn 3.
Bill Scott (Lake Summerset, Illinois)
Hell-o Mark, If Edwards says he's going to Gibbs, does Rousch / Fenway concentrate their resources on the 17? Matt is a Champion ( and my favorite driver) and his team led by Jimmy Fenning have been fast all year. The Brickyard hasn't been the best track for Fords so I'm nervous about hanging on to any of them. Maybe the 43? I'm curious to see your top 30 with the crew chief changes. It doesn't get any easier, does it? One more, Did ESPN talk to you about the spot Alan got? Thanks, Bill
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:04 PM)
It will certainly be interesting to see what happens if Edwards decides to leave..When Kurt Busch told Roush he was going to leave it got a little ugly for the remainder of the season and you'd figure it would doom Carl's chances to win the championship. I've already heard noise the crew is a bit demoralized by the whole deal..Indy hasn't typically been strong for the Fords...but this is such a big horsepower track and the FR9 is pumping out the most power right now so two or three of them will run up front and 43 could be one of them. His new crew chief was magic with Biffle at the Brickyard.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:06 PM)
As for ESPN talking to me about the anchor job the answer would be no and I think they've got a pretty good line-up now...as for the top-30 rankings...I would ranked both Montoya and Burton higher going in if not for the crew chief changes....1.Tony Stewart2.Jimmie Johnson3.Kevin Harvick4.Kyle Busch5.Jeff Gordon6.Ryan Newman7.Kurt Busch8.Carl Edwards9.Joey Logano10.Clint Bowyer11.Greg Biffle12.Kasey Kahne13.Mark Martin14.Denny Hamlin15.A.J. Where is #39 now in points
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:07 PM)
Newman has climbed to eighth and is 16 points ahead of the driver in 11th, which happens to be teammate Tony Stewart.
Guru how are you bud. Heres what I got for the Brick Yard this week. group A. 29-17 B. 33-42-83-4 C. 27-21 are those a good group for my yahoo league or do you suggest other drivers I need to be looking at. As always thank you for taking the time to give your thoughts. May the force be with you this week .
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:10 PM)
I'm doing fine Dave thanks...I'd go with 29 over 17....then 33 and 4 barely over 42...then 27 over 21... As for some other guys to think about..I like Stewart to win this deal..I also think Jeff Gordon is going to run really well and Kurt Busch and they may be options in the second group and although his previous stats at Indy are junk I think Ryan Newman comes up big Sunday. Both he and Tony looked great coming off the flat corners in NH.
hey there , whats your thought on red bull this week guru? im feeling the 83-4 have a good week this week. they both been decent on big tracks this year and think they can deliver a top 10.also do you see 88 doing much this week? thanks bud and good luck this week
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:12 PM)
Thanks Charles...I have a little more confidence in Kahne given the way he's run lately..but last time Vickers ran the Brickyard in 2010, he came home fifth. I look at him though with big question marks because of recent finishes so I see him top-15 at the best and he'll need a break or two to get that done..As for Junior, this is not one of his best tracks and certainly not a place that would be on his wish list to get his fortunes turned around. No idea what to expect out of the 88, but if you told them right now they could have a 15th place finish..they'd take it, pack up and go home.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who do you think will win the Kroger 200 at Lucus Oil Raceway & the Brickyard 400?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:13 PM)
How about Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. and Tony Stewart?
Nick Rolando (Orlando)
Mark, buddy hope the week off was good. It's been a bit of a struggle this yr so I'm going off the board this wk somewhat. Y!: 48-42-20-21 (or should I spend one of my 3 starts left w/Ragan or 5 w/Menard) and ESPN: 48-6-4-42-00.Trying somethine different Mark, thoughts? Also, when's this Carl decision going to be over?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:15 PM)
Nick, I can live with the 48,42, and 20, who's one of my top dark-horse picks this week, but the 21? I don't know about that one. Ragan's been on a roll the last three weeks and Menard had a decent run last year and RCR will put a better package underneath him. I also like the 'Dinger is going to make some noise.

Guru what do you know about jpm's new cc? Pattie did build great cars for indy, maybe with his car and the new cc they finally close the deal!
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:17 PM)
Rick, that whole deal surprised me with the timing. JPM and Pattie had the car to beat the last two times at the Brickyard..Montoya gave a win away with a speeding penalty in 2009 and Pattie's strategic mistake cost them checkered flag last season...Still, you know Pattie put together a great car for the race and they did the Goodyear tire test so I was enthused about their prospects...Now, it's hard to really know what's going to happen with a new crew chief climbing on top of the war wagon for one of the biggest races of the season.
hey guru, hope you enjoyed your week off. I am wondering about scott speed this week. I am guessing he wasnt hired to be a start and park. I am kicking around the team of 48, 24, 14, 42 and speed.....your thoughts??
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:23 PM)
I agree Kevin Speed was hired to start and park but I don't know a lot about Max Q Motorsports. Not sure how old their cars are, but they will run the FR-9 engine so that's a plus. I just see that as risk that's just too big. You might want to start with maybe a Jeff Burton at 16.4, Vickers 16.3, McMurray 16.1. The lowest I'd go is Bayne 14.8 or Cassill 14.6..and that again really increases the risk.
What will Bayne do at most this weekend?
GURU, While I don't usually change anything before the race day chat, I would like your take on the importance of practice and qualifying for teams with new crew chiefs. Doesn't the crew chief usually earn his pay with race day decisions. I know that they are important throughout the whole week, but a new CC on the box at Indy?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:24 PM)
On Bayne anything better than a top-25 will be a bonus..I don't see this as a strong track for him or the Wood Brothers.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:25 PM)
Richard, I'm like you not quite understanding some of these crew chief changes before such a big race..then again we've got only seven races left to decide who's in the case. And you're right the crew chief really earns his money on race day...and back in the shop with the car prep.
will jj yeley be a start and park this year when he rives the 55? He did a very admirable job in the 38 the last race.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:31 PM)
I think he's back to start and park butternuts and you're right he did a nice job at NH.
Zipnada (St Paul, MN)
I'm looking at Reutimann and thinking he is on a role and a possible top 15 at Indy. Tell me I'm way off base.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:33 PM)
Okay Zipnada...you're way off base..there is absolutely no way to say Reutimann's on a role..He's got one top-10 in the last nine races and two over the last 19. Occassionally, he'll come through but the man is a heartbreaker more often than not. He's destroyed me so many times I can't even look at this car without getting an upset stomach and I really like the guy personally.
Zipnada (St Paul, MN)
Sorry I brought up a sore subject and try tums lol
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:40 PM)
You're a funny guy Zippy....Believe me Reutimann is such a good guy it would sure be a lot of fun if step up to the next level..it just hasn't happened yet..MWR a little stronger in recent weeks though..no you're not going to talk me into putting him on my team for Indy..lol..
GURU, speaking of upset stomachs, I hope that is the worst of your health problems. Wondering how your back is doing?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:41 PM)
Had some tests last week..back is now good...doctors now talking about a possible hip replacement...and just when I thought I was over the hump...lol...
Will Terry Labonte s&p in the 23 car (2nd Frank Stoddard car) this weekend if he makes the race?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:45 PM)
I'm thinking he will especially because this race pays so much money. I don't see the benefit to running the whole way when the idea for Stoddard is to pocket some extra money.
Zipnada (St Paul, MN)
Speeking of stomaches, do you have a gut feeling long shot surpriser?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:46 PM)
When I think about that I keep coming back to Allmendinger who's run well at Indy and his new crew chief, Greg Erwin, really had Greg Biffle dialed in at the Brickyard. I also like Logano a lot this weekend.
If you had to use each driver three times in this 2nd half of the season, would you use up your 99's quickly (pending tumoil) and which of the next 6 races would you use him at for max points?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:55 PM)
I think you could use him for just about any race in the near future and figure on a top-10 at the least with the exception of Watkins Glen..which will be a bit of a crapshoot for him.
Zipnada (St Paul, MN)
What do you think of a first look team of Gordon, Stewart, Kahne, AJ, and Burton?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:56 PM)
Not bad Zippy...at first blush on paper looks decent...
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:57 PM)
Got to run folks...appreciate everyone sticking around for our chat today..we'll talk to you again Sunday with Indy race day chat starting at 9:30 eastern....and until then may the force with you and you have a great week..sad to say it but must "The Guru has left the building!"
