Chat with Joey Logano
Logano has three top-five finishes this season.
Welcome to SportsNation! On Wednesday, the youngest pole winner in Cup history, Joey Logano, stops by to chat about this weekend's Brickyard 400, which airs Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Logano currently sits in 18th place in the Sprint Cup standings, nearly 60 points out of the Chase. In just his third year racing full time in the Sprint Cup series, Logano has made a big impact. He became the youngest race winner in Sprint Cup history when he won at New Hampshire in 2009. He had already become the youngest driver to win in the Nationwide Series in 2008.
After taking over the No. 20 Toyota car in 2009, Logano has earned 28 top 10 finishes and two pole wins.
Send your questions now and join Logano Wednesday at noon ET!
Joey Logano (12:00 PM)
Hey, thanks for coming out here and asking some questions. I'll do the best I can to answer them!
Ashley Nichols (Bear, Delaware)
Where does your motivation to win come from? Do you want to win for personal pride or for your team?
Joey Logano (12:01 PM)
For any driver, you're just motivated all the time. Any athlete is like that. You just want to win. Obviously for your team and for your sponsors, but YOU want to win as well. As a driver, you want to win yourself more than anything.
What would it mean to you to win at the Brickyard?
Joey Logano (12:02 PM)
It'd mean a lot. At this point in the season, a win would put us in the Chase. It's a really cool track in general. We're going for it, and I think we've been doing a good job lately. We'll get momentum back on our side. If we keep doing that, that win will come.
Barb Matheny (St Paul, Mn)
I'm amazed at your talent for being such a young driver. Is it hard to be around alot of older drivers. Do you ever feel intimidated while driving?
Joey Logano (12:03 PM)
No, I used to be like that when I first started. You're racing guys you've watched on TV while you're younger. I've been doing this long enough now to know I belong there. I feel that I'm one of them at this point.
Cheesehead Sports Nut (Chicago, IL)
I am not trying to get you in trouble but if there is one thing you could change about NASCAR, what would you change and why?
Joey Logano (12:04 PM)
I get that question a lot, and I never have an answer! It's hard to make changes on a lot of things. I think they're doing a great job in appealing to younger fans, and were I in control, I'd keep doing that a hundred percent, while keeping some of the old-school aspects of it as well.
Carla (Rochester, NY)
What is your favorite racing moment?
Joey Logano (12:06 PM)
There have been a few. Most recently, my Nationwide win in Daytona was really huge and very cool. Becoming the youngest Cup winner was really cool. It's hard to pick. I always go back to Kentucky and say my first win was probably the most important, so I'll stick to that answer.
brett winningham (lamar mo.)
what was the most challageing thing when you started nascar to get used to?
Joey Logano (12:07 PM)
The big challenge when I started running Sprint Cup cars, I realized it was the best race car drivers in the country and maybe in the world. Once you realize how hard it was, it was tough to stay confident. It's not what everyone thinks it is. It's a lot of work--we don't just race on Sunday and take the week off.
Kevin (Williamsburg, VA)
Favorite NASCAR track?
Joey Logano (12:08 PM)
I like Charlotte a lot. It's a lot of fun to race at, and there's a lot of speed in it. Especially the way it changes from day to night. It's very temperature sensitive. It keeps you on your toes for a lot of reasons. Indy has so much history, so do Darlington and Daytona.
Zach Cross (Church Hill TN)
Hi JoeyI am a big fan of yours and was wondering if you are going to drive for Joe Gibbs Racing next year?
Joey Logano (12:10 PM)
That's the plan right now! No one's told me any different. We're focusing on making this year the best possible, and we've pulled ourselves out the hole we were in at the beginning of the year. I think those are just rumors.
Andrew S. (Virginia)
What kind of workouts do you do off the track to stay in shape and prepare yourself physically for the next race?
Joey Logano (12:11 PM)
I have a trainer I work out with a few times a week. We do lifting and other things of that nature. I've been biking a lot, when it's really hot out. I hate running -- I get bored. Everyday I'm home, I work out.
Was it tough being the heir to Tony Stewart when you first came to the Sprint Cup series?
Joey Logano (12:12 PM)
For sure. You're filling in the shoes of one of NASCAR's greats. It's definitely tough, but I'd rather know that I'm getting in a good racecar, as opposed to getting in one where people will expect me to run in 20th or 30th place.
Joey, What did you think of the preachers prayer at Nashville?
Joey Logano (12:13 PM)
It was interesting, to say the least!
Who was your favorite driver growing up? Do you have one know that you have arrived on the big stage? Or is everyone an enemy?
Joey Logano (12:14 PM)
Growing up, Mark Martin was my favorite. He's gotten me going in my career, so I owe him a lot! It's kinda cool to have all his gear when you're little, and then racing alongside him later on. I don't think anyone has a favorite driver once they actually get in the race. There are people you like more than others for sure.
Brianne (Waverley NS, Canada )
are you racing the NNS race in montreal this year? its not on an off weekend, so i expect not, but just wondering, love seeing ya up in canada
Joey Logano (12:15 PM)
No, but I wish I was! Montreal is an awesome city. It just falls on the wrong weekend for me.
Chris (Austin, tx)
How important do you think it is to really stick up for yourself against the older and more experienced drivers? I have noticed you defending yourself alot latley and I love it. Keep it up man.
Joey Logano (12:16 PM)
It just goes back to what I said earlier -- you're here for a reason. You need to stick up for yourself and you can't get stepped on. You need to get out there and be confident and not get pushed around. If you feel you're not being treated fairly, there's ways to deal with that.
Joey Logano (12:17 PM)
Hopefully everyone watches us this weekend at the Brickyard! We'll hopefully get a big win! Thanks a lot!
