Buzzmaster (11:54 AM)
We'll be kicking off our second day of SEC coaches chat in a few minutes. First up is James Franklin of Vanderbilt!
Buzzmaster (11:57 AM)
Coach is here!
Doug (Williamson)
Hey Coach Franklin, love what you are doing in Nashville, can you explain who you are comfortable with on the offensive line. How is the center situation working out?
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (11:58 AM)
It's one of our challenges. We do have five guys returning at that position. What we have to do is find the best combination of who should be at center who should be at LT. It's one of the things we have to get solved before the season starts.
Scott (Brunswick)
Based on Vanderbilt's football history, how difficult has it been to reverse the negativity surrounding the program and get high quality, high caliber players to want to come to VU?
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:00 PM)
It's like a lot of things in life. It's how you perceive the situation. We have a chance to tell young ment that they have a chance to come in and change history. You have a chance to become the first freshman class help Vanderbilt and be the first to do something.
Justin (Nashville, TN)
Coach Franklin, Haven't heard too much about the QB situation, especially Jordan Rodgers. Could you comment on his healing process and what you expect from the QB battle for the starting position.
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:00 PM)
Jordan's had a great summer. He's healthy 100%. He's bigger, faster, stronger. I'm looking forward to watching him compete for the job with Larry and the freshmen as well.
Phillip (a stadium near you)
Coach Franklin,At Vanderbilt there is no Athletic department, talk about the pros and cons of this situation for the football program. Thank you an have a great season.
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:01 PM)
We do have an athletic dept. but our structure is a little different. For me the biggest challenge was getting used to how the structure worked. We do have an athletic department, it's just structured different.
Justin (Nashville, TN)
Coach, I have been hearing a lot of good things about Wesley Tate out of the backfield. Since he is healthy do you expect him to have a breakout season and how many RB's will be sharing the carries this year?
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:02 PM)
We have three RBs that I think are SEC caliber backs. There is a fine line. WE need that depth in this league to keep those guys healthy. There are also some times when we need to get more guys on the field at the same time because they are three of our better players.
Michael (Nashville, TN)
According to Rivals.com you have Tennessee's #1 high school player committed to your program, what is your staff doing differently at Vanderbilt right now to enable such success?
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:03 PM)
I can't speak for what we're doing differently than in the past, but we have a tremendous product to sell at Vanderbilt. The chance to play in the SEC, the chance to live in a great city and the chance for early playing time. I can't speak to the past, but we have a great product to sell.
Vito (Asheville, NC)
Coach Franklin, what is the biggest pleasant surprise you've had since coming to Vandy and Nashville?
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:04 PM)
I think probably the city. I've been to Nashville before, but never spent considerable amount of time there. People call it the biggest small town in America and Nash-Vegas. Great food. A lot of music. I realized quickly that it would be a great selling point for us.
Brittany Whitwell (Lewisburg, Tn.)
Coach Franklin, All I got to say is as far as recruiting is concerned is Franklin will get you. Anchor down and keep it up. You have lit a fire like nothing has ever happened at Vandy. Are you having any luck with getting bigger and faster offensive lineman?
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:05 PM)
I would think the evidence would say so. Our perseverance is a very good word to describe us. We have the mentality that we're not taking no for an answer. We want them. They're coming to Vanderbilt.
Kim (Smith)
Hey Coach Franklin, what you have done is unbelieveable at Vanderbilt and I want to thank you. Chancellor Zeppos mentioned that we have a rocker for you. Other than a new awesome locker room, what facility upgrades are in place such as new jumbotron or indoor facility?
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:06 PM)
The rocket is important. We just have to launch it now. The facilities in this league and across the country are important. They show a committment to football. We have plans for the future and look forward to unveiling them. The rocket is very important to what we're trying to do.
Vandy Andy (Nashville)
Coach, does VU plan to make any changes in how it schedules both conference and non-conference games in the future? I know SEC games are dictated by the league, but are there changes you'd like to see with the league slate?
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:07 PM)
In my opinion, the two most important things you can do to impact a program is recruit and scheduling. We'll have to be creative. Some of the issues you run into as a new coach is some of the schedules are set 5 years out. So we'll have to get creative.
Marc (Charlotte)
Coach Frankin, Gas or Charcoal?
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:08 PM)
Because of the lack of time, gas is my choice. But I love to grill. I love to BBQ. I love to spend some time with the family and the coaches and their families. We don't get a lot of down time and I don't see it coming in the future.
Joe (Nashville)
Since spring ball, a considerable amount of effort has obviously been devoted to recruiting and public relations, the effects of which have been extremely positive. How much have you and your staff spent on X's & O's and personnel? How difficult is that balance?
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:09 PM)
It's a tremendous challenge. When you're at a place like VU and the challenges you're overcoming, you have to wear a lot of hats. I'm willing to do that, but the reality is that we're coming into the time of year where my focus will change to the football stuff.
Jay (Virginia)
Coach Franklin, it seems the Dores have been on the cusp of winning so many games just to see it slip away in the fourth quarter. What are you and your staff doing to try and reverse this long-standing trend?
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:10 PM)
Obviously, our work that we put in in the offseason and how hard our guys have trained from a mental toughness, physical toughness we'll have to learn how to win those games. That's why it's a recruiting issue too, it's a depth issue. The better players we have the better we'll all be.
Vandy (4life)
Coach does the success of the basketball and baseball programs help to your recruiting at all? On the same note, have you been recruiting people who want to be 2 sport athletes because is seems like Vanderbilt has so many successful sports
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:12 PM)
I think it's helped us from getting our name out there and an exposure standpoint. But basketball is probably the most similar demographic that we have with another sport. The difference is that the basketball team has to sign 3-4 teams a year and we have to sign 20.
Homer (Springfield, TN)
Will you primarily go with one-back sets or will you consider two-back formations with the depth you have in the backfield?
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:12 PM)
We're going to have to do whatever we have to do to put our kids in a position to be successful. If we have three RBs that are three of our better players on the team, we have to get them on the field without sparing our depth.
Clark (Franklin)
As a head coach you will have your hands in everything. Are there some positions that you will be more hands on than others?
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:13 PM)
Ultimately, I'm here to be the CEO of Vanderbilt football, but based on my background and the history that we have at VU football, I think I can help on the offensive side of the ball.
Bill (Nashville)
Coach Franklin, after Stanford's success last season, do you see their program as an example of what is possible at a school like Vanderbilt with a reputation as a premier academic institution in a powerful conference?
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:14 PM)
Yes, I do. The difference is that the SEC is a little different league. You have to be careful to use those schools as lessons and plans, but you better have a plan unique to your institution.
McLean (Baltimore)
Coach, the new locker room looks fantastic. Do you think it has lead to a better ethic/morale within the team?
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:15 PM)
I think it definitley helps the players from within the team. It's helped us with recruiting. Our kids really appreciate the administration taking care of them. It also shows recruits the commitment we have to the team.
Victor (Monroe,louisiana)
DO you think vanderbilt can win a bowl game this year?and do you think you can win the sec east this year?
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:16 PM)
Let's start with Game 1 and go from there.
Lester (Bell Buckle, TN)
Have you gotten to know any of the other SEC coaches? Did you know any of them prior to coming to Vandy?
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:16 PM)
Yes, I have. The SEC media days, the SEC coaches meeting. I have had some interaction with them in the past and more so now.
Matt (Nash-Vegas)
Will you be calling the plays during the game or will you rely on your staff to call the plays so that you can concentrate on the big picture of the game?
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:17 PM)
We haven't decided that part yet. We're going to go through camp and make that decision. WE'll do what's best for the program and the team, but we haven't made that decision yet.
James Ryan (Parsippany, NJ)
Have you been able to develop a relationship with the Vandy grads in the NFL? Sure having them on sideline would help recruiting. Now if we could only spread em out beyond the Bears.
Vanderbilt's James Franklin (12:18 PM)
Yes we have. That's an area where I want to continue to reach out. We have some guys in the NFL doing great things, so that's something I want to bridge and do something with.
Buzzmaster (12:18 PM)
Thanks coach!
Buzzmaster (12:19 PM)
Next up is Arkansas' Bobby Petrino!
Buzzmaster (12:28 PM)
Coach is here!
Nathan (Missouri)
Coach Petrino, what one game on your schedule do you see as being the most important?
Arkansas' Bobby Petrino (12:29 PM)
Our first game of the year. That's what we look forward to the most.
KEvin (CT)
How will you adjust to not having Mr. Mallett any more?
Arkansas' Bobby Petrino (12:30 PM)
We'll just continue to work our offense and mold it around whoever becomes the starting QB.
smoelly (Conway, AR)
Hey Coach, how does Tyler Wilson compare with Brian Brohm? And is Gragg an every down TE like DJ Williams was? Thanks, Coach! WPS!
Arkansas' Bobby Petrino (12:31 PM)
We don't make a lot of comparisons when you talk about QBs. The similarities are they're both very good students of the game, tremendous competitors and can really throw the football.
Phillip (a stadium near you)
Coach Petrino, what's the one stat that you look at before and after a game that you think will make the difference in winning or losing the game? Thank you and have a great season.
Arkansas' Bobby Petrino (12:31 PM)
Probably not just one. I've always believed in turnovers, big plays, field position and who runs the ball the best.
Noah (las cruces, nm)
Is your offense one that can be learned by the QBs quickly? Or should we expect an implementation of just a portion of the offense until you have more than a year or two to teach?
Arkansas' Bobby Petrino (12:33 PM)
The offense takes time to learn. The fortunate thing for us is the guys we have have been in the system. They understand the offense. What's important is as coaches we understand what parts of the offense they can execute.
Scott (Indy)
Coach, being from the SEC, you probably know a thing or two about bbq. Gas or Charcoal Grill?
Arkansas' Bobby Petrino (12:33 PM)
Charcoal.
JAMES (Conway,AR)
Coach Petrino, I just wanted to tell you how proud we are as Razorback fans that you have decided this is where you want to be for years to come! When you are in a recruits home what advantages are the easiest "sell" for you to get them to come to the Hill? facilities, system, fans etc? I look forward to making the trip to New Orleans again this coming year just a week later then last year!!
Arkansas' Bobby Petrino (12:34 PM)
There is no question that the advantage of our facilities, the fan support we get from the entire state. The most important thing for us is to convince them to come to campus to see it first hand.
Nate (Fayette-nam)
Hey coach, our defense went from being ranked in the 80's two years ago to i think 36th last year. I think that trend will continue. Can we have a top 10 defense this season?
Arkansas' Bobby Petrino (12:35 PM)
We would take that. But I do really believe that we'll be good on defense. Good leadership, bigger, stronger, faster than we've ever been. Very experienced.
Davis (Manhattan, KS )
Last year I watched your QB, Tyler Wilson against Auburn. Is he the real deal? He was very impressive in that game.
Arkansas' Bobby Petrino (12:35 PM)
I think he can be. He can really throw the ball. He's a tough competitor and really understands the game. All of those qualities give him the chance to be something special.
Dave (MT)
How are you going to beat Alabama this year?
Arkansas' Bobby Petrino (12:36 PM)
We've got to worry about our first three games first. Right now we're working on our gameplan for the opener.
Tim (Arkansas)
Hey Coach, How big is it having a healthy Dennis Johnson this year, and what kind of year do you see him having?
Arkansas' Bobby Petrino (12:36 PM)
It's great to have Dennis back healthy. He's certainly a big part of our football team. A RB that can run and catch the ball out of the backfield. And he's one of the top KR in the nation.
Chris (Tupelo, MS)
How is Dennis Johnson looking after his injury? Do you expect him to return kickoffs again this season?
Arkansas' Bobby Petrino (12:37 PM)
Yes, he'll definitley return kickoffs. He's 100% healthy and fired up and ready to go.
Scott Woodson (Salina, KS)
How much of a concern is the Offensive Line early on?
Arkansas' Bobby Petrino (12:38 PM)
It's definitely a concern. Any time you lose two OTs like we did, there will be questions there. I like the size, athleticism and work ethic of our offensive front. I feel like we can put together a good unit.
Grant (Mystic, CT)
How Do you think your team will do this year
Arkansas' Bobby Petrino (12:38 PM)
We're very optimistic. We have high expectations. With the experience and depth we have coming back, we have as good a chance as anyone else.
Gene Elliott (Gainesville, FL)
Being that you have developed many pro-style offenses and coached up a lot of great QB's, What advice would you give John Brantly and Charlie Weis this year?
Arkansas' Bobby Petrino (12:39 PM)
We don't give any other schools any advice! (laughs)
Shawn (Vilonia, AR)
Coach, can you talk about Jerico Nelson? He's like a heat seeking missile with dreads.
Arkansas' Bobby Petrino (12:39 PM)
Jerico has been one of our best players the last three years. Very very smart. Very tough. Been a great tackler for us. Playmaker. He's also an inspiration for everyone else on our team.
Lee (Bentonville)
Are you excited about the new facility going up? I've seen pictures of the projected outside. Any state-of-the-art stuff going up in there?
Arkansas' Bobby Petrino (12:40 PM)
We're real excited about the new facilities. We had a meeting yesterday just to see what we're going to be able to put together and help our recruiting and our student-athletes that we have on our team.
Arkansas' Bobby Petrino (12:40 PM)
Go Hogs!
Buzzmaster (12:41 PM)
Thanks Coach!
Buzzmaster (12:41 PM)
Next up is Georgia's Mark Richt! He'll be here at 1:10 p.m. ET.
Buzzmaster (1:06 PM)
Coach Richt will be here in just a few more minutes! Get this questions in!
Buzzmaster (1:08 PM)
Coach is here!
Jeff (Florida)
Coach, are you nervous at all for that first game against Boise State? They've been dragon slayers the last few years.
Georgia's Mark Richt (1:09 PM)
I wouldn't say we're nervous about it. We're definitely excited about it. We have an awful lot of respect for them as a program. When you watch film of them, you get a pretty good understanding of them as to why they've been a top 10 program the last few years. They're strong, fast and played hard. Very disciplined.
Nathan (Kentucky)
Coach Richt, what one game do you see as being the toughest and most important this season?
Georgia's Mark Richt (1:10 PM)
Well, that's so impossible to answer without someone else using it as fodder when you play them, throughout the season. Of course the first game of the season is so crucially important to get the momentum. Our next game is the first in the conference against South Carolina. That will be a big game for us and they're the preseason favorite to win the East. That's what we want to do.
Gregory (Atlanta)
Be honest now coach, how much do you guys hate the other schools in the conference?
Georgia's Mark Richt (1:10 PM)
Gameday, it's probably not a bad thing to feel like you hate somebody. That's what gets you to motivate you to play harder. We don't want to make any friends on Saturday's that's for sure.
Gary (New Orleans)
Coach, just how hard is it to play on the road in the SEC?
Georgia's Mark Richt (1:12 PM)
Well, in some ways it's difficult, because any times anything good happens, no one seems to care, but if something bad happens, everyone jumps on you. But I think it can be good because there are no distractions. You fly into town, you prepare, you have film work. You wake up and are ready to play. At a home game, you're entertaining guests and recruits. The guys have to get tickets for this person and that person. I don't mind road games at all. I enjoy them. We've actually had a pretty successful record on the road in the league.
Jon (Little Rock)
Coach, how concerned are you about the new starters on the offensive line?
Georgia's Mark Richt (1:14 PM)
Not if everybody stays healthy. I love Cory at LT. I think he's one of the more outstanding LTs in the nation. Ben our senior center might be the very best center in the country. RT Justin is a senior. He started a lot of games up front. We're very veteran in the OT and C positions. We have two young players that show a lot of potential that we're comfortable with. But if we were to sustain any injuries, especially with the seniors, it will be problematic. But we'll find a way to win regardless.
Joey (Charleston, SC)
Coach Richt, here's some food for thought... LSU vs UGA in SEC Championship game. Mettenberger has won the starting job by then, and is playing against old teammate Aaron Murray. Who wins?
Georgia's Mark Richt (1:16 PM)
I think that would be an awesome scenario. Those two young men are awesome QBs and awesome kids. I would love to see that matchup. I think it's obvious who I would expect to win that one.
James (UGA)
Coach, is there too much focus on Boise State? Will we be ready for USC?
Georgia's Mark Richt (1:17 PM)
I believe playing Boise State will not only prepare us for playing South Carolina but the rest of the season. They'll force us to be in midseason form once the season begins. It will be healthy for us, to play in a game like that stature that will create the buzz and excitement. That's all we deal with in the SEC and to play a game like that before we get into SEC play will be very important for us.
Todd (GA)
Coach, you stated something along the line of in order for GA to be a championship team this season the rookies are going to have to play a significant rolw. Other than the RB position, which position do you see the freshman having the most impact?
Georgia's Mark Richt (1:19 PM)
One guy who's not a freshman who is new to the program is Jenkins, our NG. We expect him to come in and make a big impact to help free up our LBs to make plays. As a whole, the skill guys that we signed, the DB, RB, WR, I really feel like these guys have a chance to make an impact. There are others that have a chance to help out. The LB core will be interesting to watch also.
Hayden (Atlanta, GA)
Serious question here: What is the best pizza in Athens? Also, how much was the move of Samuel back to running back related to the need to get Cowell a veteran mentor?
Georgia's Mark Richt (1:20 PM)
I'm sure to get someone upset. I'm a big Mellow Mushroom fan. My wife and I like to go down there together. She's a little more into the calzone than pizza.
Dave (Roswell, GA)
Hi Coach, UGA didn't have a problem with Boise State's shifts and tricks, is that hard to prepare for?
Georgia's Mark Richt (1:21 PM)
It is. That's something they do as well as anyone in the country. They like to give you a lot of formations and shifts. They have them and run them over and over, it's not that complicated, but when they add the motions and shifts, it makes it harder to understand. The good news is it's the first game of the year and we have the time to study them and prepare.
Jackson (Ann Arbor)
Coach, How hard is it for a freshman RB to step in and contribute? Is it harder to learn the playbook etc... or is it just hand them the ball and they run?
Georgia's Mark Richt (1:22 PM)
If all they had to do is run the football, it would not be very hard at all. Most RBs in high school do not spend a lot of time protecting the passer or running routes. Those are some of the skills that Isaiah will have to master before he plays every down for us. As far as running the football, I don't think he'll have a problem.
David (Chattanooga)
Coach Richt, Do you feal that your defense is better prepared for the 3-4 scheme after year one?
Georgia's Mark Richt (1:23 PM)
I don't think there's any doubt about that. I have already seen tremendous growth and improvement in the spring. I have seen guys protecting technique rather than just worrying about where to line up. That will allow our guys to play faster and more efficiently.
Jason (Georgia)
It seems like teams just get out of position by trying to adjust to all the shifts, why not just stay in your set defense? I think Boise's QB turns if over 5 times and UGA wins by 45 pts
Georgia's Mark Richt (1:24 PM)
One of the reasons why they do shift is if you don't adjust, you will get outnumbered. They might go to a different look. If you get caught off guard, they might get to the outside. If you just sit still, they'll get the advantage they're looking for. You must lineup properly to defend this offense.
Ben (Atlanta)
I think think Aaron Murray is the best QB in the SEC this season do you think there is a better pure passer than him in the leagus this season?
Georgia's Mark Richt (1:25 PM)
I think only time will tell. There are some really good passers in the league and there are a lot of great skill players in the league. It's just hard to say who is going to rise and be the best passer, most efficient passer. I would think he would have a chance to be one of the best.
Matt (IN)
Coach Richt, do you like to grill? Gas or charcoal?
Georgia's Mark Richt (1:26 PM)
Well, I am a gas grill guy. I would do more charcoal if I had more time. I do like to grill. Burgers, dogs chicken, salmon. Those are the things we grill most. I do a few good steaks every once in a while.
Jason (Georgia)
What is the number one thing you have Aaron Murray work on this year to improve?
Georgia's Mark Richt (1:27 PM)
I think just getting more reps in the pocket. Hanging in there just a little big longer. Making his reads. Anticipating. He's well on his way to being an outstanding QB. I think the thing he's improved on more than the physical thing is his ability to lead the team. He's earned that right due to his production as a freshman, but also because of his love of the team and teammates.
Georgia's Mark Richt (1:28 PM)
I would like to say to Bulldog nation that I really appreciate the way the fan base has supported us this offseason, considering we had a 6-7 record. I know the Bulldog Nation will be there on Sept. 3 and Sept. 10 to support us. We need you to have the season we expect to have.
Buzzmaster (1:28 PM)
Thanks coach!
zach legg (kentucky)
is this chat over?
Buzzmaster (1:48 PM)
No! We've got Kentucky's Joker Phillips coming on at 2:15. Send in those questions!
Buzzmaster (2:10 PM)
Kentucky's Joker Phillips will be here any minute!
Buzzmaster (2:11 PM)
Coach is here!
Jared (Kentucky)
Coach, at what position do you think we need a freshman to make an immediate impact?
Kentucky's Joker Phillips (2:13 PM)
Because of the production we lost at the WR position. That will be a postition we'll have to look at as a position to help us. AS well as the RB. Those two will be a place where we'll have to look long and hard for a freshman to come in and help us.
Jared (Kentucky)
Who do you expect to push Raymond Sanders for the starting job at RB?
Kentucky's Joker Phillips (2:13 PM)
Jonathan George had a good spring for us. He will be a guy that we'll look to replace. Brandon Gainer. Other guys had good springs. And we'll be looking for one or two of the freshmen to come in and play for us.
Kelly (Mars)
Coach, as a player and now a coach for Kentucky where do you think is the toughest place in the SEC to play for a visiting opponent (except for UK)?
Kentucky's Joker Phillips (2:15 PM)
All of them are tough. That's the reason why the league is so tough. The gameday atmospheres everywhere we play. It's a tough place to play. You have to prepare your team mentally and physically to play week in week out.
zach legg (kentucky)
what can we see out of your defense this year?
Kentucky's Joker Phillips (2:16 PM)
We have changed our schemes. We have moved some personnel around. We will see a different look. We will see a faster football team. We want to attack and be aggressive. We want to create turnovers.
jerry (lexington)
Will Winston Guy be able to back up his tweets this year by making plays at his new position?
Kentucky's Joker Phillips (2:17 PM)
First of all, we think the change we made with Winston Guy from safety to OLB rover position will help him make some plays. We think that he will benefit as much as anyone in the changes we've made.
victor (monroe,louisiana)
coach phillips what can we look for in kentucky,s running game this year?
Kentucky's Joker Phillips (2:18 PM)
To win in this league you have to be able to run the ball efficiently. We were a good running team, we have to become a great running team this year. WE feel like we have where it starts at and that's up front. We have four of the five returning guys on the line. That helps you run the ball efficiently, a quality OL who have been together a while and understand the schemes. And you need the backs that can find the daylight. We feel like we have those.
Matt (IN)
Coach, do you like to grill? Charcoal or gas?
Kentucky's Joker Phillips (2:19 PM)
Gas grill. I don't have a lot of time to light the charcoal.
Kentucky's Joker Phillips (2:19 PM)
That's mighty nosey of you....just kidding.
Eric (Kentucky)
How are the players adjusting to the New Defensive scheme?
Kentucky's Joker Phillips (2:20 PM)
They've taken ownership of it and done a great job this offseason of studying the defense. Watching film. Studying the playbook and taking pride in knowing it a lot better so we can be productive this season.
Shuler (Summerville, SC)
I attended last year's win against SC. How do you motivate your players everyday to compete and ultimately beat the "favorites" in the SEC?
Kentucky's Joker Phillips (2:21 PM)
We're preparing. We're preparing as well as we possibly can to know as much as we can about our opponents, about our schemes which allows them to play fast and furious when they know enough.
Josh (Kentucky)
How has Morgan Newton been developing in the off season to prepare for a full year of an uncontested starting QB position? What does he need to do to get better at this point?
Kentucky's Joker Phillips (2:24 PM)
Morgan is having an outstanding spring. He had a lot of reps in bowl prep. And that's done nothing but help his knowledge of the system and helped his confidence and allowing him to lead.
Matt Anderson (Ashland, KY)
How much of an impact has Andre' Woodson had on Morgan Newton?
Kentucky's Joker Phillips (2:25 PM)
Andre has made a huge impact on Morgan. He was our sales pitch three years ago when we were trying to attract Morgan. Andre had an outstanding career and Morgan saw he had the chance. Having Andre back here and teaching Morgan how to prepare to be a great QB has made a big impact on Morgan.
John (NY)
The Wildcobb formation has been a big part of our offense the past two season... Who are some possible replacements to run the formation? (P.s. it should still be called the Wildcobb in honor of randall)
Kentucky's Joker Phillips (2:26 PM)
We do have some replacements in mind, whether they're able to handle the whole package or if they can run the package, we'll figure that out in training camp.
True blue (Frankfort, KY)
How do we get Commonwealth Stadium to get loud? At the Georgia game last year I was told to sit down while they had the ball on 3rd and 4...What can we do to change this?
Kentucky's Joker Phillips (2:27 PM)
Get there early. Stay late. And scream and yell. And be positive inbetween.
Nathan (Indianapolis)
Is Danny Trevathan the best Linebacker in the SEC?
Kentucky's Joker Phillips (2:28 PM)
We think so. And a lot of other people think so also. He led the league in tackles. He was a first team all conference. He is preseason all conference. We think he's a great talent.
Doug Simpson (Tuscaloosa, AL)
With a talented offensive line and more "muscle" in the backfield at the TB position. How much if any do you expect our offense to change. BTW, looks like we have something really special with the two Frosh from GA. Good luck Coach and GO BIG BLUE
Kentucky's Joker Phillips (2:29 PM)
First of all, our system will not change, but we will try to do as close to what we've done the last couple of years. But also that will depend on personnel. We might have to tweak it along the way, but we want to have success on offense like we have the last few years.
Will (ky)
How you like the new uni's?
Kentucky's Joker Phillips (2:30 PM)
I like them. If I didn't like them, we wouldn't be wearing them. We're excited about them. Our players are excited. Hopefully our potential recruits are excited about them also, but they don't win games. Players win games.
Kentucky's Joker Phillips (2:31 PM)
We're excited about the season. This program is on the RISE. We hope to see you in Nashville on Sept. 1.
Buzzmaster (2:35 PM)
Thanks Coach!
Buzzmaster (2:36 PM)
Next up is Alabama's Nick Saban at 3:20 p.m. ET!
Buzzmaster (3:18 PM)
We are minutes from coach Saban!
Buzzmaster (3:19 PM)
Coach is here!
Jeff (Washington)
Coach, how do you prepare for a new season, knowing that every year you're going to have to go up against the likes of Auburn, LSU, in your own division?
Nick Saban (3:20 PM)
I think the thing we try to get our players to do is try to focus on the things that we control. WE don't control the other teams. But we control how we prepare, how we condition and the mental toughness that we need to play in the season with consistency. Staying focused on our team is the real key. In this day and age, it's hard to do, with all of the information out there.
Goalline Stand (Birmingham)
Coach Saban. DeQuan Menzie had some setbacks last year with injuries. Can you tell me how talented is DeQuan Menzie is as a cornerback when healthy?
Nick Saban (3:21 PM)
Last year, because he injured himself in the spring at junior college, he was cleared to practice in the fall, but he wasn't healthy enough to play at corner, we had him as a nickel. He came out of the spring as our most consistent CB. We hope his experience and knowledge will help him be a corner full time.
Goalline Stand (Birmingham)
Coach Saban. The April Tornado brought a sense of humility to the area. Will there be some sort of sticker on the helmet or patch on Bama's uniform to keep that tragedy of loss in perspective?
Nick Saban (3:23 PM)
As an institution, we've sort of adopted the little ribbon that's in the form of a bow to recognize the loss of life, community in honor of those who were affected by the tragedy. I think more importantly, we have to all work to continue to have the kind of spirit and positive energy that I've been proud of the people in our state to continue to do that. It will be a few years before we get Tuscaloosa back to what it once was.
Tanner (TN)
Is Dreamland the best bbq in the southeast?
Nick Saban (3:23 PM)
We've got a lot of great BBQ restaurants and that's one of them. Everybody has to make that choice.
Greg (Louisville,Ky)
Hey Coach you have some good freshman coming in who do you think can come in and be that impact player we need on the Offensive and Defensive sides of the ball?
Nick Saban (3:25 PM)
I think the biggest thing with freshmen when they come in is not their physical ability but their maturity. How can they stay focused on improving and how they can compete at the position, not being the star player, which is an unrealistic expectation freshmen have. Until you get into fall camp and you can see the competitive maturity, it's hard to predict which guys will have the opportunity. We have seen some guys this summer that have shown promise.
Harry (Pa)
Hello Coach - You have lots of Bama fans here in Pa and we can't wait til you come up to take on penn state. This will be a great road game test for the young QB's on the team. Do you feel that kind of atmosphere will help the QB's grow going in to the SEC schedule?
Nick Saban (3:26 PM)
I don't think there's any question about it. One of the reasons why we like to play one of the top teams in the country before the SEC play is it's a test for the entire team. If you have a challenging game early, it helps. Because QB is such an important position for us, the game management issues are such a challenge for a QB and will be for these guys.
Kyle (St. Louis)
Hey coach, do you anticipate using a dual QB system in the fall?
Nick Saban (3:27 PM)
I don't really anticipate that. We're sort of feeling like we need to let this thing play out and let the cream come to the top. See who plays with consistency and leadership. We don't anticipate playing two, but we don't rule out the possibility.
devin (baton rouge)
coach saban, with all the distractions going on in college football, how do you keep your players focused and keep them from getting in trouble off the field or with boosters that could make them ineligible?
Nick Saban (3:29 PM)
It's very challenging. There are a lot of temptations out there for players. There is so much media attention so that if anyone does anything at all, people will know. Our approach is to educate so players can anticipate what good and bad behavior will do and impact our future. How that will impact their ability to be successful. We try not to assume that they know. We want to set up the guidelines to keep their moral compass. When people understand the consequences they have a better chance to listen to the rules.
Mr. Crimson (TN)
Coach, since Dee Hart tore his ACL will he be redshirted?
Nick Saban (3:30 PM)
Chances of Dee Hart coming back this season, being a RB, knowing that he will be four months putting him in November before he'll even be cleared and be involved in football, it might be some more time before he gets hit, I would say it's a remote possibility that he could come back this year. Though he had a fantastic spring and has a bright future.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
Coach I'm a diehard Raiders fan hear in the Bay Area. What makes Roland McClain so special, and will be a dominate force for the Raider Nation in the coming years.
Nick Saban (3:31 PM)
Rolando, first he has great size, he's athletic. He's one of the smartest players I've ever coached. He's instinctive, which is a key to being a LB. I think he has tremendous leadership qualities. He had as great an impact as any player on our championship team as anyone I've associated with. These are the guys that can turn around a team and an organization. If given the opportunity, he can help any team he's involved with.
Kevin (Reno, NV)
Does Donte Hightower need to provide/and capable of providing the same leadership and dominance as Rolando McClain in order for the Tide to win another championship?
Nick Saban (3:33 PM)
I think Donte, though a different personality, effects the team in a positive way. I think he's very well respected. He communicates well. I think it will be important to our team that he is that kind of a leader. Trent, William other guys are capable of that. Last year we had an immature team, not a lot of seniors. This year, we have more people in positions to provide that kind of leadership.
david (Chattanooga)
Coach Saban, In your opinion how has the sec changed or evolved since you first came in the league? Roll Tide!
Nick Saban (3:34 PM)
I think that the quality of the league from top to bottom has continued to improve. Bigger stadiums, better TV packages, more exposure. The quality of ball has improved and with it, just about everything else in the league.
Matt (IN)
Coach Saban, do you like to grill? Charcoal or gas?
Nick Saban (3:35 PM)
I'm a gas guy. I'm for the most convenient way to get it done. If you asked my wife that question, she would blast me for not grilling out. She loves when I do, so she doesn't have to make a mess and all that stuff. I have become progressively worse at it as I've gotten older.
James (Spartanburg, SC)
How big of a role will Jon Fulton have in the Tide secondary in 2011?
Nick Saban (3:35 PM)
Jon is a good player, unfortunately, we have all of our starters back from last year and three CBs who have started ahead of Jon. He's a great special teams player for us. If we lost a player, he would be our most effective guy to come in and play winning football.
Nick Saban (3:37 PM)
I would just like to thank all of our fans for the support they've given our community in the aftermath of the devastation. A lot of people have given to tornado relief. Taylor Swift has give 250,000 dollars. Kenny Chesney did a concert. People have given a lot of money. I know this is about football and the football season, but this is about people. I want to thank them all.
Buzzmaster (3:37 PM)
Les Miles is up next in a couple of minutes!
Buzzmaster (3:38 PM)
Coach is here!
Scott Watkins (Kaplan LA)
Is there a QB battle going on in BR or is Jordan going to be our starter?
LSU's Les Miles (3:39 PM)
Jordan is ahead. Jarrett Lee and Zach Mettenberger those two pursuing.
Kelly (Baton Rouge)
Coach, did you talk smack to Saban when you just passed him in the hallway?
LSU's Les Miles (3:40 PM)
We had great fun.
Nathan (Kentucky)
Coach Miles, how does the offense look going into the season?
LSU's Les Miles (3:41 PM)
I like our veteran line. I like our TBs. I think our QBs will play best if we play the team that we have slated to be on the field game after game after game, we'll do plenty.
Ryan (Tuscaloosa, AL)
Coach Miles, in your own opinion how would you describe the rivalry between Alabama and LSU?
LSU's Les Miles (3:42 PM)
A very respectful rivalry, where we would expect their team to be very talented, prepared and play at a high level where we would have to play well for victory.
mark (casper wishing i was in baton rouge )
coach are u as pumped about the game vs oregon as i am
LSU's Les Miles (3:45 PM)
We're really pretty excited. It would appear to be two teams that will play extremely hard for victory.
Sean (New Orleans)
Are you doing anything different to prepare for Oregon's speed option?
LSU's Les Miles (3:45 PM)
We'll put the new triangle defense in. We're going to try to keep a guy over the top and make them keep it inside. But don't tell anybody.
John (Happy Valley, PA)
Coach Miles, I'm flying down from Penn State for the LSU-Kentucky game. What's your favorite spot on campus that I should visit?
LSU's Les Miles (3:47 PM)
They're very talented. We're just going to play our best.
LSU's Les Miles (3:47 PM)
They're very talented. We're just going to play our best.
LSU's Les Miles (3:47 PM)
The Varsity. Have a beer. Have a big meal. And have some fun.
Tom (Natchez)
How do you control your players in this day of twitter, facebook and such?
LSU's Les Miles (3:48 PM)
We closely monitor it. And we allow them to do it in a respectful and tasteful way.
Donald (Dallas)
How good do you believe Reuban Randle can be this season?
LSU's Les Miles (3:49 PM)
I think he will a really fine year. I think he's going to have to want the year to be special. If he does, he has special talent.
Logzta (SU (not LSU sorry))
About six weeks til you get to taste LSU grass again... Happy about that?
LSU's Les Miles (3:50 PM)
I'm very happy to get the season started. I'm very fortunate to be at LSU. I'm very fortunate to represent a great team, great state, great institution.
victor (monroe,louisiana)
What do you think of russell shepherd returning punts this year?
LSU's Les Miles (3:50 PM)
It's a great idea. Something that he worked on this offseason.
DEANintheYAY
Hey Coach, do you think we will see more or fewer "trick" plays with Kragthorpe as OC??
LSU's Les Miles (3:51 PM)
He's pretty aggressive. I think it will be aggressive play.
Chris B (Lafayette,Louisiana)
Favorite Louisiana food?? Crawfish,Shrimp,Gumbo or Oysters???
LSU's Les Miles (3:51 PM)
All but oysters.
Jon (Gainesville)
who has the want to be the man to pound out the yardage up front this year?
LSU's Les Miles (3:52 PM)
Spencer Ware.
LSU's Les Miles (3:52 PM)
Alfred Blue. Michael Ford.
LSU's Les Miles (3:53 PM)
It's been great fun at the carwash. I look forward to seeing you all at the Tiger Stadium. Geaux Tigers!!!!! See ya.
Buzzmaster (4:04 PM)
