It's one of our challenges. We do have five guys returning at that position. What we have to do is find the best combination of who should be at center who should be at LT. It's one of the things we have to get solved before the season starts.

Based on Vanderbilt's football history, how difficult has it been to reverse the negativity surrounding the program and get high quality, high caliber players to want to come to VU?

It's like a lot of things in life. It's how you perceive the situation. We have a chance to tell young ment that they have a chance to come in and change history. You have a chance to become the first freshman class help Vanderbilt and be the first to do something.

Coach Franklin, Haven't heard too much about the QB situation, especially Jordan Rodgers. Could you comment on his healing process and what you expect from the QB battle for the starting position.

We do have an athletic dept. but our structure is a little different. For me the biggest challenge was getting used to how the structure worked. We do have an athletic department, it's just structured different.

Coach, I have been hearing a lot of good things about Wesley Tate out of the backfield. Since he is healthy do you expect him to have a breakout season and how many RB's will be sharing the carries this year?

We have three RBs that I think are SEC caliber backs. There is a fine line. WE need that depth in this league to keep those guys healthy. There are also some times when we need to get more guys on the field at the same time because they are three of our better players.

According to Rivals.com you have Tennessee's #1 high school player committed to your program, what is your staff doing differently at Vanderbilt right now to enable such success?

I can't speak for what we're doing differently than in the past, but we have a tremendous product to sell at Vanderbilt. The chance to play in the SEC, the chance to live in a great city and the chance for early playing time. I can't speak to the past, but we have a great product to sell.

Coach Franklin, what is the biggest pleasant surprise you've had since coming to Vandy and Nashville?

I think probably the city. I've been to Nashville before, but never spent considerable amount of time there. People call it the biggest small town in America and Nash-Vegas. Great food. A lot of music. I realized quickly that it would be a great selling point for us.

Coach Franklin, All I got to say is as far as recruiting is concerned is Franklin will get you. Anchor down and keep it up. You have lit a fire like nothing has ever happened at Vandy. Are you having any luck with getting bigger and faster offensive lineman?

I would think the evidence would say so. Our perseverance is a very good word to describe us. We have the mentality that we're not taking no for an answer. We want them. They're coming to Vanderbilt.

Hey Coach Franklin, what you have done is unbelieveable at Vanderbilt and I want to thank you. Chancellor Zeppos mentioned that we have a rocker for you. Other than a new awesome locker room, what facility upgrades are in place such as new jumbotron or indoor facility?

The rocket is important. We just have to launch it now. The facilities in this league and across the country are important. They show a committment to football. We have plans for the future and look forward to unveiling them. The rocket is very important to what we're trying to do.

Coach, does VU plan to make any changes in how it schedules both conference and non-conference games in the future? I know SEC games are dictated by the league, but are there changes you'd like to see with the league slate?

In my opinion, the two most important things you can do to impact a program is recruit and scheduling. We'll have to be creative. Some of the issues you run into as a new coach is some of the schedules are set 5 years out. So we'll have to get creative.

Because of the lack of time, gas is my choice. But I love to grill. I love to BBQ. I love to spend some time with the family and the coaches and their families. We don't get a lot of down time and I don't see it coming in the future.

Since spring ball, a considerable amount of effort has obviously been devoted to recruiting and public relations, the effects of which have been extremely positive. How much have you and your staff spent on X's & O's and personnel? How difficult is that balance?

It's a tremendous challenge. When you're at a place like VU and the challenges you're overcoming, you have to wear a lot of hats. I'm willing to do that, but the reality is that we're coming into the time of year where my focus will change to the football stuff.

Coach Franklin, it seems the Dores have been on the cusp of winning so many games just to see it slip away in the fourth quarter. What are you and your staff doing to try and reverse this long-standing trend?

Obviously, our work that we put in in the offseason and how hard our guys have trained from a mental toughness, physical toughness we'll have to learn how to win those games. That's why it's a recruiting issue too, it's a depth issue. The better players we have the better we'll all be.

Coach does the success of the basketball and baseball programs help to your recruiting at all? On the same note, have you been recruiting people who want to be 2 sport athletes because is seems like Vanderbilt has so many successful sports

I think it's helped us from getting our name out there and an exposure standpoint. But basketball is probably the most similar demographic that we have with another sport. The difference is that the basketball team has to sign 3-4 teams a year and we have to sign 20.

Will you primarily go with one-back sets or will you consider two-back formations with the depth you have in the backfield?

We're going to have to do whatever we have to do to put our kids in a position to be successful. If we have three RBs that are three of our better players on the team, we have to get them on the field without sparing our depth.

As a head coach you will have your hands in everything. Are there some positions that you will be more hands on than others?

Coach Franklin, after Stanford's success last season, do you see their program as an example of what is possible at a school like Vanderbilt with a reputation as a premier academic institution in a powerful conference?

Yes, I do. The difference is that the SEC is a little different league. You have to be careful to use those schools as lessons and plans, but you better have a plan unique to your institution.

I think it definitley helps the players from within the team. It's helped us with recruiting. Our kids really appreciate the administration taking care of them. It also shows recruits the commitment we have to the team.

Will you be calling the plays during the game or will you rely on your staff to call the plays so that you can concentrate on the big picture of the game?

We haven't decided that part yet. We're going to go through camp and make that decision. WE'll do what's best for the program and the team, but we haven't made that decision yet.

Have you been able to develop a relationship with the Vandy grads in the NFL? Sure having them on sideline would help recruiting. Now if we could only spread em out beyond the Bears.

We don't make a lot of comparisons when you talk about QBs. The similarities are they're both very good students of the game, tremendous competitors and can really throw the football.

The offense takes time to learn. The fortunate thing for us is the guys we have have been in the system. They understand the offense. What's important is as coaches we understand what parts of the offense they can execute.

There is no question that the advantage of our facilities, the fan support we get from the entire state. The most important thing for us is to convince them to come to campus to see it first hand.

It's great to have Dennis back healthy. He's certainly a big part of our football team. A RB that can run and catch the ball out of the backfield. And he's one of the top KR in the nation.

It's definitely a concern. Any time you lose two OTs like we did, there will be questions there. I like the size, athleticism and work ethic of our offensive front. I feel like we can put together a good unit.

I wouldn't say we're nervous about it. We're definitely excited about it. We have an awful lot of respect for them as a program. When you watch film of them, you get a pretty good understanding of them as to why they've been a top 10 program the last few years. They're strong, fast and played hard. Very disciplined.

Coach Richt, what one game do you see as being the toughest and most important this season?

Well, that's so impossible to answer without someone else using it as fodder when you play them, throughout the season. Of course the first game of the season is so crucially important to get the momentum. Our next game is the first in the conference against South Carolina. That will be a big game for us and they're the preseason favorite to win the East. That's what we want to do.

Be honest now coach, how much do you guys hate the other schools in the conference?

Gameday, it's probably not a bad thing to feel like you hate somebody. That's what gets you to motivate you to play harder. We don't want to make any friends on Saturday's that's for sure.

Coach, just how hard is it to play on the road in the SEC?

Well, in some ways it's difficult, because any times anything good happens, no one seems to care, but if something bad happens, everyone jumps on you. But I think it can be good because there are no distractions. You fly into town, you prepare, you have film work. You wake up and are ready to play. At a home game, you're entertaining guests and recruits. The guys have to get tickets for this person and that person. I don't mind road games at all. I enjoy them. We've actually had a pretty successful record on the road in the league.

Coach, how concerned are you about the new starters on the offensive line?

Not if everybody stays healthy. I love Cory at LT. I think he's one of the more outstanding LTs in the nation. Ben our senior center might be the very best center in the country. RT Justin is a senior. He started a lot of games up front. We're very veteran in the OT and C positions. We have two young players that show a lot of potential that we're comfortable with. But if we were to sustain any injuries, especially with the seniors, it will be problematic. But we'll find a way to win regardless.

Coach Richt, here's some food for thought... LSU vs UGA in SEC Championship game. Mettenberger has won the starting job by then, and is playing against old teammate Aaron Murray. Who wins?

I think that would be an awesome scenario. Those two young men are awesome QBs and awesome kids. I would love to see that matchup. I think it's obvious who I would expect to win that one.

Coach, is there too much focus on Boise State? Will we be ready for USC?

I believe playing Boise State will not only prepare us for playing South Carolina but the rest of the season. They'll force us to be in midseason form once the season begins. It will be healthy for us, to play in a game like that stature that will create the buzz and excitement. That's all we deal with in the SEC and to play a game like that before we get into SEC play will be very important for us.

Coach, you stated something along the line of in order for GA to be a championship team this season the rookies are going to have to play a significant rolw. Other than the RB position, which position do you see the freshman having the most impact?

One guy who's not a freshman who is new to the program is Jenkins, our NG. We expect him to come in and make a big impact to help free up our LBs to make plays. As a whole, the skill guys that we signed, the DB, RB, WR, I really feel like these guys have a chance to make an impact. There are others that have a chance to help out. The LB core will be interesting to watch also.

Hi Coach, UGA didn't have a problem with Boise State's shifts and tricks, is that hard to prepare for?

It is. That's something they do as well as anyone in the country. They like to give you a lot of formations and shifts. They have them and run them over and over, it's not that complicated, but when they add the motions and shifts, it makes it harder to understand. The good news is it's the first game of the year and we have the time to study them and prepare.

Coach, How hard is it for a freshman RB to step in and contribute? Is it harder to learn the playbook etc... or is it just hand them the ball and they run?

If all they had to do is run the football, it would not be very hard at all. Most RBs in high school do not spend a lot of time protecting the passer or running routes. Those are some of the skills that Isaiah will have to master before he plays every down for us. As far as running the football, I don't think he'll have a problem.

Coach Richt, Do you feal that your defense is better prepared for the 3-4 scheme after year one?

I don't think there's any doubt about that. I have already seen tremendous growth and improvement in the spring. I have seen guys protecting technique rather than just worrying about where to line up. That will allow our guys to play faster and more efficiently.

It seems like teams just get out of position by trying to adjust to all the shifts, why not just stay in your set defense? I think Boise's QB turns if over 5 times and UGA wins by 45 pts

One of the reasons why they do shift is if you don't adjust, you will get outnumbered. They might go to a different look. If you get caught off guard, they might get to the outside. If you just sit still, they'll get the advantage they're looking for. You must lineup properly to defend this offense.

I think think Aaron Murray is the best QB in the SEC this season do you think there is a better pure passer than him in the leagus this season?

I think only time will tell. There are some really good passers in the league and there are a lot of great skill players in the league. It's just hard to say who is going to rise and be the best passer, most efficient passer. I would think he would have a chance to be one of the best.

Well, I am a gas grill guy. I would do more charcoal if I had more time. I do like to grill. Burgers, dogs chicken, salmon. Those are the things we grill most. I do a few good steaks every once in a while.

What is the number one thing you have Aaron Murray work on this year to improve?

I think just getting more reps in the pocket. Hanging in there just a little big longer. Making his reads. Anticipating. He's well on his way to being an outstanding QB. I think the thing he's improved on more than the physical thing is his ability to lead the team. He's earned that right due to his production as a freshman, but also because of his love of the team and teammates.

Coach, as a player and now a coach for Kentucky where do you think is the toughest place in the SEC to play for a visiting opponent (except for UK)?

All of them are tough. That's the reason why the league is so tough. The gameday atmospheres everywhere we play. It's a tough place to play. You have to prepare your team mentally and physically to play week in week out.

We have changed our schemes. We have moved some personnel around. We will see a different look. We will see a faster football team. We want to attack and be aggressive. We want to create turnovers.

To win in this league you have to be able to run the ball efficiently. We were a good running team, we have to become a great running team this year. WE feel like we have where it starts at and that's up front. We have four of the five returning guys on the line. That helps you run the ball efficiently, a quality OL who have been together a while and understand the schemes. And you need the backs that can find the daylight. We feel like we have those.

Coach, how do you prepare for a new season, knowing that every year you're going to have to go up against the likes of Auburn, LSU, in your own division?

I think the thing we try to get our players to do is try to focus on the things that we control. WE don't control the other teams. But we control how we prepare, how we condition and the mental toughness that we need to play in the season with consistency. Staying focused on our team is the real key. In this day and age, it's hard to do, with all of the information out there.

Coach Saban. DeQuan Menzie had some setbacks last year with injuries. Can you tell me how talented is DeQuan Menzie is as a cornerback when healthy?

Last year, because he injured himself in the spring at junior college, he was cleared to practice in the fall, but he wasn't healthy enough to play at corner, we had him as a nickel. He came out of the spring as our most consistent CB. We hope his experience and knowledge will help him be a corner full time.

Coach Saban. The April Tornado brought a sense of humility to the area. Will there be some sort of sticker on the helmet or patch on Bama's uniform to keep that tragedy of loss in perspective?

As an institution, we've sort of adopted the little ribbon that's in the form of a bow to recognize the loss of life, community in honor of those who were affected by the tragedy. I think more importantly, we have to all work to continue to have the kind of spirit and positive energy that I've been proud of the people in our state to continue to do that. It will be a few years before we get Tuscaloosa back to what it once was.

Hey Coach you have some good freshman coming in who do you think can come in and be that impact player we need on the Offensive and Defensive sides of the ball?

I think the biggest thing with freshmen when they come in is not their physical ability but their maturity. How can they stay focused on improving and how they can compete at the position, not being the star player, which is an unrealistic expectation freshmen have. Until you get into fall camp and you can see the competitive maturity, it's hard to predict which guys will have the opportunity. We have seen some guys this summer that have shown promise.

Hello Coach - You have lots of Bama fans here in Pa and we can't wait til you come up to take on penn state. This will be a great road game test for the young QB's on the team. Do you feel that kind of atmosphere will help the QB's grow going in to the SEC schedule?

I don't think there's any question about it. One of the reasons why we like to play one of the top teams in the country before the SEC play is it's a test for the entire team. If you have a challenging game early, it helps. Because QB is such an important position for us, the game management issues are such a challenge for a QB and will be for these guys.

I don't really anticipate that. We're sort of feeling like we need to let this thing play out and let the cream come to the top. See who plays with consistency and leadership. We don't anticipate playing two, but we don't rule out the possibility.

coach saban, with all the distractions going on in college football, how do you keep your players focused and keep them from getting in trouble off the field or with boosters that could make them ineligible?

It's very challenging. There are a lot of temptations out there for players. There is so much media attention so that if anyone does anything at all, people will know. Our approach is to educate so players can anticipate what good and bad behavior will do and impact our future. How that will impact their ability to be successful. We try not to assume that they know. We want to set up the guidelines to keep their moral compass. When people understand the consequences they have a better chance to listen to the rules.

Coach, since Dee Hart tore his ACL will he be redshirted?

Chances of Dee Hart coming back this season, being a RB, knowing that he will be four months putting him in November before he'll even be cleared and be involved in football, it might be some more time before he gets hit, I would say it's a remote possibility that he could come back this year. Though he had a fantastic spring and has a bright future.

Rolando, first he has great size, he's athletic. He's one of the smartest players I've ever coached. He's instinctive, which is a key to being a LB. I think he has tremendous leadership qualities. He had as great an impact as any player on our championship team as anyone I've associated with. These are the guys that can turn around a team and an organization. If given the opportunity, he can help any team he's involved with.

I think Donte, though a different personality, effects the team in a positive way. I think he's very well respected. He communicates well. I think it will be important to our team that he is that kind of a leader. Trent, William other guys are capable of that. Last year we had an immature team, not a lot of seniors. This year, we have more people in positions to provide that kind of leadership.

I think that the quality of the league from top to bottom has continued to improve. Bigger stadiums, better TV packages, more exposure. The quality of ball has improved and with it, just about everything else in the league.
