Tuesdays With Mobile: Players On The Move
John Pez (1:02 PM)
Well this will be quite a historic sports week. NFL free agency frenzy is upon us, the baseball non-waiver trade deadline is approaching and marquee NBA players are harboring thoughts of taking "their talents" overseas. So whether you want to talk Asomugha, Beltran or Kobe Bryant, let's rock and roll.
brandon, mn [via mobile]
will the vikes keep sidney rice
John Pez (1:06 PM)
Brandon gets us started with Sidney Rice. Along with Santonio Holmes, Rice should be the most coveted free agent on the market. But after being sidetracked with a hip injury last year, he will have to pass extensive physicals in order to bag the big money. I think DE Ray Edwards definitely leaves Minny, but Rice is a 50-50 prop to stay. If you want to make this an attractive place for a vet QB (like maybe McNabb)to compete with Ponder, then you have to keep Rice as a primary target.
p. neeferson [via mobile]
Which of their free agent players will the jets resign
John Pez (1:10 PM)
Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum says he is prioritizing WR Santonio Holmes and CB Antonio Cromartie. If they succeed in retaining both, then they will lose Braylon Edwards, Brad Smith and DE Shaun Ellis. I'm sure Rex Ryan will be happy if that's the outcome.

is zach miller an option for the bills at tight end?
John Pez (1:13 PM)
Mark, the Bills desperately need a pass-catching TE to make life easier for Ryan Fitzpatrick. Shawn Nelson was drafted with the hopes he would develop into a threat at TE, but that hasn't materialized. Bills are more than $36 million under the cap so this would be a good move for them. The Raiders are well over the cap, but they have made offers to Miller.
will, charlotte NC [via mobile]
With 50 mil in cap room what moves do you see the panthers making?
John Pez (1:17 PM)
Will, the Panthers should prioritize retaining DE Charles Johnson (11 1/2 sacks last season) a year after losing Julius Peppers. With their cap room, they should also re-sign DeAngelo Williams and pursue CB Johnathan Joseph, TE Zach Miller, WR Sidney Rice. Cam Newton would be ecstatic with that haul.

Two Questions: 1. Will Giants trade Osi? 2. Will the yankees make any trades?
John Pez (1:26 PM)
This Osi Umenyiora situation may end up like the Jeremy Shockey scenario. Despite being a favorite of the Mara family, Shockey simply agitated GM Jerry Reese to the point of no return and was shipped to the Saints for a 2nd-round pick. Osi's request for a contract upgrade is wearing thin on Reese, but is he willing to settle for a 3rd-round pick instead of a 2nd-round pick. Depends on if the Giants re-sign Kiwanuka and how ready Jason Pierre-Paul looks in training camp? As for the Yankees, remember last year at the trade deadline Brian Cashman orchestrated trades for Lance Berkman, Kerry Wood and Austin Kearns. Berkman hit a big home run in the series victory over the Twins, but the Yanks didn't make it to the World Series. I think the chief worry for the Bronx Bombers is who is starting Game 2 of a playoff series after CC. Burnett, Colon or Garcia? They'll continue to look into Ubaldo Jimenez but I think a trade for Wandy Rodriguez from Houston may be more feasible. Last year, they hooked up with Houston on the Berkman trade, sending Mark Melancon to the 'Stros, so Wandy is a better option than Brett Myers. Then there's Carlos Zambrano of the Cubs, who is always available. But the Yanks are not interested in Z at his salary.

With aqib talib's legal troubles, who might the buccaneer's sign at corner? And who else might they sign with all their cap room?
John Pez (1:34 PM)
The Bucs can swim laps in this free agent pool with more than $55 million in cap space. Have the money to land one of the top 3 CBs on the market - Asomugha, Cromartie and Johnathan Joseph - and one of the top 2 WRs - Holmes, Rice.Landing one of those 5 players would be a tremendous boost for a team that won 10 games last season, but missed the playoffs. They addressed the defensive line in the last 2 drafts, but should not let MLB Barrett Ruud (unrestricted free agent) get away. Safety Eric Weddle is also a possibility for the secondary. I should note that despite Tampa Bay's record last season, the Bucs just had one victory over a team that finished with a winning record last season.
Adam, Neenah, WI [via mobile]
What can the Packers look to get in a trade of Nick Barnett?
John Pez (1:38 PM)
Adam, they settled with LB A.J. Hawk, who accepted a paycut to stay in Green Bay. Desmond Bishop played so well after replacing an injured Nick Barnett last year, that Barnett simply became expendable. Maybe the best the Pack can get in a trade for Barnett is a 5th-round pick, although other teams will just wait for Green Bay to release him.
dan [via mobile]
what are the pirayes going to do
John Pez (1:43 PM)
How about this Pirates fever!! After 18 straight losing seasons, this is a long, long, long time coming for Bucs fans. The perfect fit for the Pirates would be a middle-of-the-order guy like Carlos Beltran or Aramis Ramirez to complement McCutchen and Neil Walker. But they probably instead are more likely to end up with a Josh Willingham, Jeff Francoeur or Coco Crisp. Kudos to GM Huntington for landing guys like Jeff Karstens, Joel Hanrahan, James McDonald in trades over the past few years when he was a seller. Now he should be a buyer in this up-for-grabs NL Central race.
Jake (IL) [via mobile]
Where will Sidney Rice, Santonio Holmes, and Nnamdi Asomugha go?
John Pez (1:48 PM)
Jake hitting us with quite a hat trick. The Bears are $34 million under the cap, they should go hard after Sidney Rice, who is familiar with NFC North rivals. Santonio Holmes will likely stay with the Jets or sign with the Redskins. Shanahan loves Santonio. Nnamdi Asomugha will end up with the Texans, Bucs, Redskins or Ravens. Wow. Imagine if it's the Ravens. No I will guess that Asomugha joins Mario Williams and DeMeco Ryans on that Houston D. But imagine if he ends up in the same secondary as Ed Reed? After the Cowboys go on a cutting spree, they may make a play for Asmomugha as well.
Gene Brandon, Mi [via mobile]
Which free agent quaterbach should Miami target?
John Pez (1:50 PM)
Gene, the Dolphins should target Kyle Orton to compete with Chad Henne for the starting job. Orton had 41 TD passes and 21 INT over the last 2 seasons with the Broncos. Donovan McNabb and Marc Bulger are also possibilities
Daniel (Dallas) [via mobile]
Do you think the Texas Rangers will win it all this season?
John Pez (1:55 PM)
Daniel, let's make sure the Rangers don't get stuck with a bevy of ALDS day playoff games due to Josh Hamilton's vision issues. Well since they will probably match up with Boston or New York in the ALDS, that should not be the case.Terrific lineup, C.J. Wilson, Colby Lewis, Ogando and Harrison have anchored the rotation, but the absence of Cliff Lee will be felt in the playoffs.I do think they are capable of beating both the Red Sox and Yankees, but I have them losing to the Phils in the World Series.
jack baltimore [via mobile]
who do you think the ravens will get in free agency this year?
John Pez (1:59 PM)
Asomugha. Excited about that, right. No, just kidding, after drafting CB Jimmy Smith and with the return of CB Domonique Foxworth from a knee injury, I think the Ravens pretty much stand pat in the secondary. But I think Ray Lewis may have a hand in convincing Plaxico Burress to make another Super Bowl run and at the same time, facing the Steelers twice a year (maybe even three times again) would be tempting for Plax.
seth [via mobile]
How much can the chiefs gain from this free agency
John Pez (2:02 PM)
Seth, yeh the Chiefs may be the most underpublicized defending division champion and Scott Pioli has some cap room. Look for Pioli to stay true to his New England background with under the radar signings, perhaps WR Malcolm Floyd from AFC West rival San Diego or TE Zach Miller from AFC West rival Oakland.
Justin DE [via mobile]
Will the Indians make a trade before the deadline and if they do who will they target?
John Pez (2:12 PM)
Justin, the Indians should be commended for landing their closer Chris Perez from the Cardinals in a past trade deadline deal for Mark DeRosa. Somehow, they acquired Carlos Santana from the Dodgers for Casey Blake. Now as buyers instead of sellers, a bat is needed with Choo and Sizemore out of the picture. Outfielders like Ryan Ludwick, Willingham, Colby Rasmus, Drew Stubbs, Fukudome are available.
shane new orleans [via mobile]
Do you think reggie will stay with the saints? and what will happen with devery henderson and lance moore?
John Pez (2:17 PM)
Shane, it depends on how much money a team like Miami is willing to offer Reggie. Does Sean Payton look to Tiki Barber if Reggie departs? Pierre Thomas and Mark Ingram will get most of the carries, but a pass-catching back is needed. The preference is for Reggie to fill that role, but again, if a team like Miami makes a substantial offer, then the Saints may turn to Tiki, who of course Payton is familiar with as a former OC with the Giants. Between Devery Henderson and Lance Moore, one will stay and one will likely go. Moore is probably the better player. Keep in mind that Marques Colston is coming off knee surgery.
michael camp pendleton ca [via mobile]
What veteran qb do u see the titans going for and what can we expect to get for vince young?
John Pez (2:20 PM)
Well it looks like all signs point to Matt Hasselbeck for the Titans as a starter for a year or two and a mentor to Jake Locker. Vince Young will just be released since the team needs cap room to land Hasselbeck and to try and re-sign MLB Stephen Tulloch (so very underrated) and pass-rushing DE Jason Babin.
Jared (OH) [via mobile]
Who are the Packers gonna lose and gain in free agency?
John Pez (2:23 PM)
Jared, the Pack will cut Nick Barnett loose and probably lose DE Cullen Jenkins and WR James Jones to free agency. G Daryn Colledge is 50-50, but FB John Kuhn (cult hero in Green Bay) and K Mason Crosby will likely be retained.
Randy FL [via mobile]
Who will the Jaguars target in free agency?
John Pez (2:27 PM)
Randy, you probably didn't think Jack Del Rio would make it to year nine. Well he and Marvin Lewis did. I think they'va had it with WR Mike Sims-Walker and will make a play for a receiver like Malcolm Floyd or James Jones. On defense, the Jags are expected to make a run at safety Eric Weddle, who will likely leave the Chargers, or Raiders safety Mike Huff. They should pursue Bucs MLB Barrett Ruud since Kirk Morrison was a major disappointment last season.
travis: (lancaster pa) [via mobile]
with all of the craziness surrounding the Eagles, what will they actually do?
John Pez (2:33 PM)
Travis, Mike Vick wants WR Plaxico Burress. If the Eagles do not retain LB Stewart Bradley, then they may pursue LB Barrett Ruud. S Quintin Mikell and K David Akers are just about gone. Asomugha may be too expensive, so Johnathan Josephcould be an option at CB opposite Asante Samuel. But that depends on if CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is included in a deal for QB Kevin Kolb. And then there's Brett Favre when and if Vick is injured in Week 6. Now you didn't think they would go with Mike Kafka did you? How about Tiki Barber as a backup to LeSean McCoy?
Josh (Newport News, Va) [via mobile]
Wouldn't it make sense for the Steelers to go after Santonio Holmes or Derrick Mason to sure up their WR core? Holmes has proven he can play with Ben and Mason has those hands that QB's love on 3rd down. Also do you see the Steelers going after a top tier CB? We all know they need one.
John Pez (2:43 PM)
Josh, I think Santonio returning to Pittsburgh is not going to happen. That's as likely as Plax signing with the Steelers. But Derrick Mason is an intriguing option after playing against the Steelers all those years as a member of the Titans and Ravens. That would be quite a twist to this Baltimore-Pittsburgh rivalry. But I think the Steelers are happy with their receivers Hines Ward, Mike Wallace, Emmanuel Sanders and Antonio Brown. The pursuit of a CB will depend on if the club is able to re-sign Ike Taylor and they want Taylor back. He actually was a starter on Pittsburgh's last 3 Super Bowl teams - one under Cowher and two under Tomlin.
Dom New Mexico [via mobile]
Who should the rams go after to help their chances at a winning season?
John Pez (2:46 PM)
Dom puts the Rams on the map. Now this is a team that should splurge to get Sam Bradford a playmaker. They are more than $31 million under the cap. Instead of Santonio Holmes or Sidney Rice, they will probably end up with a Malcolm Floyd or a James Jones. Need to target a safety like Eric Weddle or Mike Huff after cutting O.J. Atogwe loose.
Mark indiana [via mobile]
Where is fitzgerald going to land?
John Pez (2:49 PM)
Mark, Larry Fitz sure missed Kurt Warner last year, didn't he? Fitz is in the last year of a 4-year, $40 million deal. Staying in Arizona will depend on who his new QB will be and on if the Cardinals can make a playoff run this season.
Justin dallas tx. [via mobile]
Wat will the BOYS do wit Barber and will they contend for the division and playoffs
John Pez (2:55 PM)
It's not surprising the Cowboys will release guard Leonard Davis and RB Marion Barber and T Marc Colombo and WR Roy Williams could be the next to go. This team needs to make moves in order to get under the cap. In order to land an elite cornerback like Nnamdi Asomugha, the Cowboys will need to cut even more players for cap space. They did go 5-3 under Jason Garrett, but predicting where they will end up with all of these rosters in flux is virtually impossible. But we'll have fun with that in a future chat.
adrain s. [via mobile]
What free agent signings area the colts looking at
John Pez (2:58 PM)
Polian really doesn't play the free agent game. He will first figure out where he stands with Peyton Manning's franchise tender figure (probably in the neighborhood of $21 million). Then he'll check into RB Joseph Addai's asking price and try to re-sign T Charles Johnson. Look for the Colts to again be a non-factor in adding free agents.
greg greenville sc [via mobile]
Redskins re-sign Moss and sign Holmes or Rice or Heap and trade Mcnabb and trade Haynesworth? do you think thats possible?
John Pez (3:01 PM)
Greg, I think if Santonio Holmes signs, then Santana Moss is not retained by the Skins. With Chris Cooley and Fred Davis at tight end, I don't expect them to make a play for Todd Heap. McNabb will have to be released before a humongous September roster bonus kicks in. Haynesworth is just about untradeable with that contract.
Franco chicago [via mobile]
What will the white sox do. And the bears will they get a good receiver or a past there prime receiver
John Pez (3:11 PM)
Franco from Chicago is tapping into his inner Ozzie Guillen. GM Ken Williams made mistakes in past years in making trades for Jake Peavy and Edwin Jackson (sent Clayton Richard and Daniel Hudson away in those deals) and for some reason claimed Alex Rios on waivers. Aramis Ramirez would be a perfect fit here at 3B, but the Cubs are not shipping him to the South Side. Edwin Jackson and Matt Thornton would be the trade bait.As for the Bears, you're not thinking Terrell Owens or Randy Moss with that "past their prime" crack, are you? If they don't land a Sidney Rice, then receivers like James Jones or Malcolm Floyd are possibilities.
jpratt [via mobile]
What do u think the raiders will so in free agency and or will they make any trades
John Pez (3:13 PM)
Raiders are way over the cap. So over that they couldn't pick up Asomugha's option. Just re-signing TE Zach Miller will be difficult. They will likely lose S Mike Huff. Don't look for much activity from the Raiders in terms of adding big-name players.
Daniel Wash DC [via mobile]
John Beck? The starting QB of the Redskins.
John Pez (3:17 PM)
Yeh, say that 5 times and you still won't believe it. The Dolphins once made him a 2nd-round draft pick when Cam Cameron was the coach. Mike Shanahan has gone on record as saying that Beck is capable of starting in the NFL.
jon cleveland ohio [via mobile]
What is the best bet for the browns pertaining to free agency?
John Pez (3:24 PM)
Jon, Mike Holmgren has been almost too quiet but he has cleared more than $32 million in cap space.I think most people don't even know that Pat Shurmur is the head coach. Director of personnel Tom Heckert says the team will take a "conservative approach" to free agency, but DC Dick Jauron said he would like to add a safety. It's possible the team may look into the possibility of adding Donte Whitner from Buffalo.
josh louisiana [via mobile]
Who do you think will be rookie of the year, and which undrafted rookie should we look out for
John Pez (3:27 PM)
Josh, I'll go with A.J. Green of the Bengals quickly emerging as the team's top receiver. An undrafted rookie to look out for is West Virginia running back Noel Devine, who may end up replacing Jerious Norwood as the backup to Michael Turner with the Falcons.
MQuack NH [via mobile]
What are odds that Hunter Pence ends up in a Braves uniform?
John Pez (3:29 PM)
Astros now say they will not trade Hunter Pence, so the Braves may have to shift their attention to Carlos Beltran. They will not trade Julio Teheran for Beltran, but may be willing to part with Mike Minor.
Aaron Windsor Ontario [via mobile]
Do you think the tigers will win the central and if they do, do you think they can make any noise in the playoffs?
John Pez (3:33 PM)
Aaron, the perfect scenario for the Tigers would be to release Magglio Ordonez and trade for Carlos Beltran to stick in the middle of the order with Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez. After Justin Verlander, the Tigers are not getting what they expected from Rick Porcello and Max Scherzer in the rotation and the bullpen could be upgraded as well. Can win the division, but don't expect them to beat the Red Sox or Yankees in the ALDS.
Brian tennessee [via mobile]
Will the braves get Beltran or t hunter? Also will dolphins get orton or young?
John Pez (3:38 PM)
Brian, these scenarios are very possible. But Torii Hunter has another year left on his contract, so I don't think the Braves are interested in taking that on. Beltran would be the better acquisition. Dolphins would be better off with Orton than Young, but having either of them compete with Chad Henne for the starting job is a positive.
John Pez (3:40 PM)
Two more questions and we'll wrap up this Mobile Chat.
Rob Pa [via mobile]
When it comes to Asomugha, is there any way that my beloved Raiders will be able to keep him?!!
John Pez (3:44 PM)
Rob, no I think that ship has passed. Maybe they can convince Antonio Cromartie to head back to the AFC West? Salary cap restrictions will limit their moves. Maybe they end up with Redskins CB Carlos Rogers (teammate of QB Jason Campbell at Auburn and with the Redskins).
Sam [via mobile]
Chad ochocinco. Bears?
John Pez (3:49 PM)
Are we going to end this with Chad Ochocinco? Really? So since the Bengals have to reach a salary cap floor of $107 million under the new cap rules, I think they pick up Ocho's option and pair him with A.J. Green. So I don't think Ocho will be in play for the Bears unless Marvin Lewis has absolutely had enough of the nonsense. No, we're not going to end this with Ocho. Next question
Kevin, WA [via mobile]
Will the Seahawks seriously not re-sign Hasselbeck?
John Pez (3:52 PM)
I'm as stunned as you. Looks like Hasselbeck is headed to Tennessee and the Seahawks will now go after Tarvaris Jackson, who is familiar with new Seattle offensive coordinator Darrell Beavell from his days in Minnesota. I don't see the Seahawks repeating as NFC West champs with this move.
John Pez (3:54 PM)
OK, that will do it for Tuesday's Mobile Chat. Thanks for all the questions and have a great week.
