Beano Cook (3:02 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome as the summer rolls on and we are getting closer to the start of the season. Big news from South Bend as Michael Floyd was reinstated today. Am I surprised that happened? If you follow these chats, you know the answer is no. We will start doing weekly chats on August 31. Fire away.
Giancarlo Toffoli (St. Jean, Canada)
Mr. Cookwhy did it take an eternity for the University of North Carolina to dismiss Butch Davis? It took the Boston Bruins almost forty years to win a Stanley Cup and it seemed the Tar Heels were going to take this long before making a decision.Thank you for your insight
Beano Cook (3:03 PM)
I think the timing was a disgrace. The new Board of Trustees wanted to make a statement for some reason. It was a stupid move on the part of the Board. The timing was terrible.
Mat (Harvest, AL)
Will the Crimson Tide's two young QBs be able to handle the road road trip to Penn St?
Beano Cook (3:06 PM)
We said last year that this would be a tough game for Alabama. Don't be surprised if Penn State pulls off an upset in this one. September 11th will be a great day for football fans as Alabama-Penn State during the day and Michigan-Notre Dame in Ann Arbor at night.
Jim (Staten Island)
What is your opinion on Miami Hurricanes this year?
Beano Cook (3:07 PM)
They have to be better than last season, when they were a disappointment. Al Golden was a good hire from Temple and he is taking a step up. I think the Hurricanes will improve.
Will Oklahoma win the title? I like Landry Jones and Ryan Broyles and they will be tough to stop.
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
Oklahoma is the favorite to win the national title. Tough game as Florida State may have something to say on September 17th in Tallahassee. The Sooners have a lot of talent and the league is not the same without Nebraska.
With everything that has happened at Ohio State, what do you see as a good record for them at the end of the season?
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
Ohio State is still going to be very good. The guys who were on the second team last year were probably recruited by 40 schools. I think the Buckeyes will win at least eight games this season. In the SEC, it would be five or six!
Cheesehead Sports Nut (Chicago, IL)
The 2011 Wisconsin Badgers look like a great offense on paper. Despite losing stud offensive lineman almost every year the Wisconsin Badgers always have a quality offensive line. After that, the Badgers have the one-two punch of James White and Montee Ball at running back along with Russell Wilson throwing to Nick Toon and Jake Byrne. How do you think the 2011 Wisconsin Badgers offense will perform on the field in 2011?
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
Wisconsin has to be considered a darkhorse to play for the national championship. Wilson was a great addition with his speed and his experience. The Badgers have the material to make serious noise in the Big 10+, legends and leaders.
Rich (New Jersey)
Which conference will send the teams to a bowl game in 2011? And which are your must see games for the first two or three weeks.
Beano Cook (3:15 PM)
Oregon-LSU, Boise State-Georgia, Alabama-Penn tate, Notre Dame-Michigan. The SEC and the Big Ten will probably sed the most schools to bowls. They have a lot of state universities and they travel a lot of fans to bowl games.
Do you like the way the Pac-12 split into two divisions? Weird to have USC and UCLA not with Stanford and my Cal Bears!
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
Yes, I wanted them to do it and preferred it splitting some of the teams like USC and Arizona in one dividion and UCLA and Arizona State, if you get what I am saying. I have no problem with what they did, going basically North and South.
Hey Beano! Big fan! I was just wondering how much you get paid everytime you praise the SEC like they are your golden God? Just an estimate will do? Thanks!
Beano Cook (3:18 PM)
Number one, 40 years ago I would have said the Big Ten was the best conference. Now it is the SEC. In 40 years from now it could be someone else. Can you really say the SEC isn't the best. I do not play favorites and if I did, the big East would be my favorite and I honestly feel that league is the worst of the power conferences.
Big Ten (Midwest)
Beano, please just say something good about us. We promise that we won't remember history any more. We'll just pretend like the SEC was relevant before the year 2000? We know you don't remmeber, so we will stop remembering too!
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
The Big Ten may be the most interesting this season because of the addition of Nebraska. The Big Ten was a lot better off taking Nebraska instead of Rutgers, even with Penn State lobbying for the Scarlet Knights.
How good is that LSU-Oregon game? That should have ramifications on the national championship...
Beano Cook (3:20 PM)
Absoultely. If Oregon wins that, the Ducks have an easier road the rest of the season than LSU. It is a great game and Chip Kelly and Les Miles know how important it is.
How long will it take for Brady Hoke to turn things around at Michigan? I like what he did before coming to Ann Arbor.
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
There is material at Michigan. What happened the last three years is a mystery to me. Denard Robinson is a star and I look for the vastly-improved Wolverines record this season. I think Hoke will do a good job.
Beano, can you tell ESPN to televise more interesting games on opening weekend? Wisconsin-UNLV, Auburn-Utah State, Ohio State-Akron? Can't we do better?
Beano Cook (3:23 PM)
You will see plenty of good games during the season. Quit complaining. You sound like the guy who makes $50 million a year and pays $1 thousand in taxes.
Will Houston Nutt finally get fired this season and will the SEC finally be rid of him?
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
No. See me in November. If he has a decent year he will be OK.
Bill (Los Angeles)
Has stripping Reggie Bush of the Heisman tainted the award at all?
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
I don't think so.
Mitch (Destin, FL)
Beano, the ACC talk seems to be dominated by FSU and Virginia Tech at the moment. Any chance another school shines this year? GT perhaps? Maybe even Clemson?
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
Clemson is a mystery every year. They should win some of the games that they don't. It will be an interesting year in the ACC. This is August, not the middle of November but you are right, Virginia Tech and Florida State are the favorites, I agree.
Counting the days until I head to Happy Valley to watch the Nittany Lions open the season..... what are your thoughts on what PSU fans should expect from JoPa's team this year? Is a Big Ten Title?
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
I am the only one who thinks Penn State may upset Alabama. If Penn State does that, watch out.
Beano - have a pair of KC - Mariners seats - behind the plate - willing to trade for Penn State/Alabama - in comparable locationany interest?
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
I think if I get the baseball tickets I get the better deal, don't I? Has Seattle won 20 games yet?
Beano, how do you see UCLA doing this year?
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
A lot will depend on Prince at QB. They have the material to have a good team and they have fallen short too often. I think there is some pressure on the coaching staff this season.
Should Schiano be on the hot seat at Rutgers? Yeah, he doesn't win as much as we'd like, but he's taken us out of a deep hole, has won some big games and has a program we're proud of.
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
Look where they were before he arrived there. Honestly, I do not know if he is on the hot seat.
Dave (Ithaca, NY)
You mention Floyd in the intro, but what are your expectations for Notre Dame in general? Are 10 wins and a borderline-BCS berth reasonable?
Beano Cook (3:32 PM)
I think they will win at least 10 games. I know that I have said that before and been wrong. The Irish should be concerned about that Michigan game early and do not take South Florida too lightly.
Sometimes I wonder about AD's. For instance, Pitts didn't get better by firing Wann-a-stach. Maryland didn't improve by hiring Edsall. North Carolina certainly didn't do themselves any favors by firing Davis when they did. Thoughts?
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
We will see. It is hard to make that statement before these guys have coached a game. See me in December.
Kevin K (Lawton, OK)
Hasn't the Nebraska moving to the Big 10 been overdone in the media? The Big 10 hasn't won a national championship in years. Nebraska hasn't won even a conference championship since 1999.At least the Pac 12 invited a team that has had an undefeated season within the last decade in Utah.
Beano Cook (3:35 PM)
Look, there are a lot of conferences that have not won a national championship in recent years. It was a brilliant move by Jim Delany to get Nebraska. It was a great addition for the Big Ten and a loss for the Big 12.
Rick (Massapequa, Long Island)
What do you think of the West Virginia coaching situation and Bill Stewart being let go? Are the Mountaineers under more pressure since they are now favored in the Big East?
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
I think there is some pressure. In today's world, there is pressure every Saturday. West Virginia wanted to change coaches and that is their right. I personally thought it was handled poorly.
Andy (Palo Alto)
Stanford and Oregon are both in the Pac 12 north so only 1 of them is going to the pac 12 championship game? Which one? and who will win the pac 12 south
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
At this stage, these teams meet at Stanford which would give the Cardinal a slight edge. That is a very tough game to pick right now. The Cardinal also has a new coach in Shaw and we have to see if there is an adjustment from coach Harbaugh. It helps to have the best QB in America in Andrew Luck.
Come on, Beano! You talk about the lack of good non-conf games all the time. The schedule for weeks 1/2 isn't nearly as good as it could be. The NFL is smart enough to not put bad games in good TV slots. CFB needs to do the same!
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
The schools schedule the games and ESPN doesn't make them, they take what is available.
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
People are often not playing tough non-conference games. They like a nice home payday and when they went to 12 games many schools watered things down.
Which team that has been hit with violations do you think will do better this year? USC or OSU?
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
Chris (Athens, GA)
Beano, what's the greatest UGA game you ever saw?
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
By the way, I think the Buckeyes have an easier overall schedule....It is not an easy schedule, but I thik it is easier than USC. The Buckeyes do have Miami and Colorado. It is hard to say which was the greatest Georgia game I saw in person. I did see the game in 1973, I think the score was 11-10 vs. Florida. The Georgia-Florida rivalry is one of my favorite ones.
Dan (Corn Country)
Vols taking the SEC East....possible?
Beano Cook (3:46 PM)
The SEC East is the weaker of the two divisions.
Beano,Happy beginning of Fall. How good do you see Notre Dame being under Kelly's second season and what will be the key to their success this year if they are to compete for a BCS Bowl?
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
If Notre Dame gets through September undefeated, it has a chance to play for the national title. I know I said that last year and they did not go through September unscathed. I understand the Irish is favored in every game except Stanford this season.
Fred (Walla Wall)
How much does having Stanford as one of the nation's elite programs help the image of college football?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
It is a positive. It is one of the toughest schools academically. I don't think Stanford can consistently be in the top 10. Unlike state universities, Stanfors doesn't have the majors to hide some athletes in.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who do you think will be the Best College Football team in 2011?
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
Right now I have Oklahoma-Georgia for the title. My final pick will be August 31st.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
How excited are you about the OU-Notre Dame series that begins next year? Does any school consistently schedule tougher in the non-conference than Bob Stoops?
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
It is a two-game series and I think that is great, Next year Notre Dame has to play on the road against Oklahoma, USC and Michigan State. Give Stoops credit for this too. Oklahoma will play home and home with Florida State. He does schedule some tougher non-league games. USC really schedules some tougher games. UCLA does too.
Beano Cook (Moronland)
Wow - Georgia? Really? Haha. Your age is showing, Grandpa.
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
I always try to pick a darkhorse. Georgia is not my final pick.
Blake (Abilene, TX)
Are the Longhorns the biggest ? going into this season?
Beano Cook (3:54 PM)
The QB situation is a good question. There are some questions about the Longhorns after last season.
Beano Cook (3:56 PM)
See you again on August 31st. In the mean time I am going to the bank to cash my checks from the SEC! I would love to see Wisconsin or Oregon win a national championship. Hey, I feel the SEC is the toughest conference out there and you are entitled to your opinion to disagree. Relax and enjoy the rest of the week.
