Dick is here!
Dick Vitale (11:12 AM)
I'm sick and tired, if you've seen my Tweeting, about what's happening in collegiate sports. It's a disgrace what's happened at Miami. The Nevin Shapiro's of the world. But listen to this, the kids aren't innocent either. I don't like the rules. Yes, they should be compensated. They know right from wrong. But where was the president? Where was the AD? The compliance officer did, Reed, and he got berated by Shapiro. It breaks your heart if you care about college sports.
Dick Vitale (11:12 AM)
I have a column coming up on ESPN.com about this.
How do you see UCLA backcourt theis year? Will Lamb or Powell start at SG? Who will start at the 3?
Dick Vitale (11:13 AM)
UCLA will make some strides over last year. Their defensive abilities are good. They'll put some points on the board. I look for some real improvement. They'll be ranked high.
Who are the top 5 players in NCAA for this upcoming season?
Dick Vitale (11:14 AM)
My all-Rolls Royce team is up on ESPN.com/DickVitale. Harrison Barnes. Player of the Year honors will be a battle. Barnes. Sullinger. It will be an interesting year with some real quality players with some quality teams. Jones coming back at Kentucky. It should be a terrific year with some quality PTP'ers.
Brandon (North Carolina)
What will be the final score of the uk/unc game on 12/3?
Dick Vitale (11:16 AM)
You have to give an edge to Kentucky, because they're playing at home. But UNC will bring in a loaded team. I have UNC 1 and Kentucky 2. But understand the magnitude. The interest. Kentucky fans are so passionate. The bottomline is it's really important how you peak come March. It's a great game for the teams to play, but it's not the end all. The coaches will understand that. Kentucky will get tested early. They have some multitalented players.
Do you think this Miami scandal could hurt Frank Haith at Missouri? I know it is a little early in this story, but this could be rough on him if he is implied, no?
Dick Vitale (11:18 AM)
Absolutely, it could be rough. There have been some implications. According to Shapiro, and you don't know what's valid, the fact that he laid 10Gs on a recruit, Frank Haith will be in major trouble. Knowing what transpires in recruiting, you can rest assured that other recruiters are telling kids interested in Missouri that they better watch out. Recruiting is ruthless. This is his first year at the university and then this story comes out. For his sake, I hope there's no validity.
Derek (South Carolina)
What is the likelyhood that Duke and UNC will join the SEC within the next 5 years?
Dick Vitale (11:20 AM)
Somebody Tweeted me about that. I said back that I don't think we'll ever see Duke and UNC leave the ACC, unless the ACC becomes something else. But you never know what's going to happen. We see so much disloyalty. Greed. When you see Texas getting $300 million for their own network, others start saying they don't have a chance. It's the haves and the have nots. I never thought this stuff would go down. Nobody can tell me logically that PSU belongs in the Big Ten or that Boston College belongs in the ACC. It benefits them financially.
Steven (Tampa, Fl)
Hey Mr. Vitale ...I met you a few years back in Sarasota at a restaurant. Big Fan. What do you think of my dukies in China beating a national team? why so much hype behind UNC?
Dick Vitale (11:21 AM)
I think the one thing already that you can see is that Rivers is going to be a major factor. That's one thing that I get excited about. Seeing these new kids on the block. You hear so much about them and then you can't wait to see them perform. Rivers is getting a leg up on the other freshmen playing early. I think he'll be special.
how come people expect Coach Calhoun to have to announce each year that he will be back? Shouldnt he be given the benefit of the doubt that he'll return until he makes an announcement he is retiring or when his contract is up?
Dick Vitale (11:22 AM)
I think people feel that way based on his physical situation with his 3 battles with cancer. He's a gym rat. He loves teaching. Loves inspiring players. They'll be a preseason top 10 team.
Mike (North Carolina )
What are the chances that the acc will get its rightful number of teams in the ncaa tournament (more than 4)?
Dick Vitale (11:23 AM)
The bottomline is that the clubs below UNC and Duke have to perform. Other than Maryland in the hunt the last couple of years, they haven't performed. We'll see what will happen with FSU. They look solid. It's really imperative the clubs in the league give some balance. Time will tell.
Cord (Lynchburg, VA)
Which Plumlee's will be the starting big man?? Or will Ryan Kelly actually good a good amount of playing tiee again???
Dick Vitale (11:24 AM)
Duke has such great size on the inside. The Plumlee brothers give them some winning experience. Plus they add the young guy. They're active. They have size.
Luke (New Jersey )
Who is your sleeper team this year? I think Florida has a strong chance at making a nice run. They kind of remind me of the villanova team that featured Nardi, Ray, Foye, and Lowry with their backcourt of Walker, Boynton, Rosario (rutgers transfer), and the freshman Brad Beal has a tremendous upside. Also can not forget about Mr. Young up front!
Dick Vitale (11:25 AM)
I don't think Florida is a sleeper. I think they'll be very good. I don't classify them as that. They're a legit top 15. Mississippi State is a sleeper. They can be a team to keep an eye on. USC can be a very dangerous basketball team. Marquette could have a big, big year.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who do you think is Replacing Jimmer Fredette at BYU while Fredette will be playing for the Bucks?
Dick Vitale (11:26 AM)
Any time you lose a guy like Fredette, that will take away your offensive firepower. But they always have players that fit in their system and they find a way to win. I don't see that changing. He was one special guy and he'll be a big plus in the NBA.
Cheesehead Sports Nut (@CheeseheadSN)
With Bo Ryan and Buzz Williams entrenched at Wisconsin and Marquette respectively, absent a bunch of injuries, are both teams a virtual lock to make the NCAA Tournament every year?
Dick Vitale (11:27 AM)
I do. I really do. The system at Wisconsin, they just plug in guys. He's one of the most underrated coaches in the country publically, not among his colleagues.
How are my Cuse gonna look this year?
Dick Vitale (11:28 AM)
I have them in my top 5! I expect them to party big time. It's going to be a big year for Syracuse this year. I expect big things. The problem is the conference is so loaded. They'll be the best conference top to bottom.
Is this a ACC only chat? Show the Big East some love! Who are your top 5 in the BEast?
Dick Vitale (11:29 AM)
That's a great question. Until I see everybody and who's healthy and who's not. But right out of the gate, you have to think about Syracuse and UConn. In my top 40 on ESPN.com/DickVitale, they're right up there with Pitt and Louisville.
What do you expect from Memphis backcourt this year? Can Joe Jackson and Will Barton both have breakout years?
Dick Vitale (11:30 AM)
Wow! It should be a big year for them. I have them ranked high. They'll be smiling down there. Go down and visit Elvis? Yeah, but you better also check out the Memphis Tigers.
Dick Vitale (11:32 AM)
I just came back from Italy. We had a phenomenal time. The highlight of highlights was meeting the pope. I've met a lot of celebrities, but I had goosebumps. I was absolutely speachless. He asked me who to pray for, I told him my family and for peace in the worlds. To read more, go to DickVitaleOnline.com and click on Journal.
