Chat with Donny Moore
How would you rate Drew Brees and Adrian Peterson?
The Madden 100 Club gives fans the power to determine which NFL superstars will receive 100 ratings in five of the most popular categories in EA's "Madden NFL 12."
Moore is the official Ratings Czar for the EA's Madden franchise. And when he's not working on the ratings, he's also a part of the design team for the game. He has the final say for updating the ratings on all 2000+ players already in the game on a year-to-year basis, as well as creating the 400 incoming rookies from scratch. How if at all did the lockout affect your ratings?
Donny Moore (2:02 PM)
That's a good question. It affected some of the rookie ratings a little bit, because they didn't have the training camps to show their skills. The last roster update we did was right after the Super Bowl, so we captured the NFL as it ended the season last February for a good starting point.
Donny, how did you guys decide that you were going to give a 100 rating to someone?
Donny Moore (2:03 PM)
It was a combined effort of the game team, the marketing people and some other people inside EA thought it would be a good idea to give out some of these elusive ratings. They're really treated special this year.
I think you do a good job with the ratings but I feel that some of the rookies are rated too high, especially QBs with their accuracy ratings. Shouldn't we wait until actually seeing some of them in a game before giving them ratings that make some of them better than established veterans in the game?
Donny Moore (2:04 PM)
That's a great way to put it. This year is something we've done along that is to not give the benefit of the doubt. Some of the stuff, athleticism, speed, jumping, they are on par with some of the veterans, but some of the other things like route running, man coverage, we're taking a little different approach. They're starting off lower, and they'll have to earn them.
How difficult is it determining ratings for rookies? What is the basis for how you create their individual ratings? Is it based more heavily on college performance or draft expert evaluations?
Donny Moore (2:06 PM)
It's probably not a heavier, both of those things factor in quite extensively. Their combine performances. Their stats in college. Where they're drafted. We didn't have Arian Foster rated a 90 last year, we had him rated as a fourth string RB. He had a 25-point boost from the start of 11 to the start of 12.
Donny, how did u come up with the group of players for the option of having 100 ratings?
Donny Moore (2:07 PM)
That part was simple. We just took the top five guys at each category. We didn't do any tweaking to the list. The guys that are in the running for the Club 100, they are the best of the best, the elite of the elite and arguably some of the best of all time in some of these categories.
How are Offensive linemen ratings established? I can't figure out how Mediocre Bears Guard Chris Williams gets an 84 rating.
Donny Moore (2:08 PM)
Linemen are always one of the toughest things to rate every year. It's tought because of the lack of statistical benchmarks like with other players. We can look at rushing yards per team, sacks allowed. To come up with those, we look at top 50 lists from scouts and other people in football. What kind of contracts do these players get? When you see Logan Mankins get a big contract, it says that he's an elite guard. It's not the only consideration, but it factors in.
who's your favorite team/player to use in the game?
Donny Moore (2:09 PM)
It switches every year. Every season has new teams that made all of the free agent moves. I like to play with the Steelers. They have one of the best LB groups in history. Ben has a big gun and Mike Wallace is a beast with his speed. He's someone to watch out for in the fantasy leagues this year, by the way.
Blazin4QB (New York)
What was the toughest rating change you ever had to make?
Donny Moore (2:11 PM)
We don't look at it like that. Our philosophy is that we're trying to look at what's happening on the field. We're not trying to be predictors and say this is what's going to happen. We just take all of the factors and say this is what's going on with the ratings this week.
Do you have a team or is it just you? 1600+ players seems like a lot for one guy to keep up with. Perhaps a four man team would have better luck with accuracy and consistency?
Donny Moore (2:12 PM)
I have the end of the day stamp of approval for it. We have a few guys that we use for different tasks and run some metrics. But we really rely heavily upon the information that's out there. Scouts, ESPN Insider, fantasy sites. It's all about compiling it and having the best sources for info. But I get every single e-mail and Tweet about a guy being underrated.
Zachary (Pittsburgh, PA)
What was the funniest exchange you have had with a player who has disagreed with their rating?
Donny Moore (2:14 PM)
I always talk about the Houshmanzadeh one, where he said he was going to boycott Madden. He challenged his speed rating. We had some stats that backed up why we had him where he was. I used to get text messages from Edgerrin James. He wasn't trying to politick his ratings, he was just concerned about where he ranked with the other U. Miami backs. He wanted to make sure his pass blocking was better.
What kind of ratings can we expect for Terelle Pryor.
Donny Moore (2:15 PM)
I actually have that right there. He's a new Oakland Raider. His speed rating is 90. For a QB, I think he's only behind Vick. He may play receiver, we don't know where he's going to lineup.
How can yu determine ratings for a teams offense when lets say the teams has a subpar quarterback? Like the dolphins with henne. How can you rate like Brandon Marshall when there's not alot of quarterback effiency.
Donny Moore (2:16 PM)
We try to rate each player individually among all 70-plus ratings features. Take the Cowboys for example, we're not going to put down Dez Bryant and Felix Jones because they had Jon Kitna instead of Tony Romo. You'll notice with a game that if you play a game with that backup QB, you'll feel the difference.
Can we expect to see Tiki Barber in the game and what sort of OVR rating can we expect?
Donny Moore (2:17 PM)
Yes, Tiki is debuting in Madden 12 for the first time in several years. He's a few points lower than the last time. I think he's 83 overall. He's on the free agent wire. He's still a complete veteran back. He's a nice addition to the team, but his stamina is a little bit lower. He's not been playing football, so it will take him some time to get back up to speed.
When will first update be out ? Will it be just trasactions ? Or ratings also ?
Donny Moore (2:18 PM)
Yes, the first roster update will be out Aug. 26, in time for the EA Sports Season Pass subscribers. I'm hoping to be done with it on Friday. There have been over 2,000 moves since we shipped the game.
90 for Pryor? Let's not get carried away...just because he can run a 4.4 40 doesn't mean that that speed will translate onto the field (see Reggie Bush).
Donny Moore (2:19 PM)
4.38 is actually the number that we saw. From the game film in college, he could not be stopped from behind. But you're right in the sense that the minute that he's in preseason games and he's not performing, then we're going to make sure the ratings reflect that.
Michael (St. Louis)
Why is the team that always wins the Super Bowl the best team in Madden upon release, even if they do not have the best players?
Donny Moore (2:21 PM)
It's not an automatic team. The Packers ended Madden 11 as the best team and they didn't lose a whole lot of people to not be the best team in Madden 12. They have good WRs out wide. They have a good secondary. Matthews is a beast. They're talented off the board. But, a bit of news, they will not be the top ranked team with the next ratings update.
Nick (Baltimore )
Do you happen to have the ratings of Plaxico Burress? Thanks, Nick
Donny Moore (2:22 PM)
He was similar to the same look with Tiki and with Vick a few years ago. Plaxico is still 6-5 and a monster at WR. What we've seen recently is he's not in shape and not running routes. So we've adjusted the ratings accordingly. He's not where he was a few years ago, but he's still a dangerous weapon.
Donny Moore (2:25 PM)
Thanks for having me chat. If you want to play Madden early, make sure to sign up early for the EA Season Pass. If not, check out Madden 12 on Aug. 30.
