Chat with Ernest Wilford
Ernest Wilford (2:03 PM)
What's up everybody! I'm ready for Texas A&M and your questions!
Brandon from Orlando
Ernest, VT is off to a great start and looking like you are ready to go all the way. What are the Hokies doing to make sure the end of the season goes better then it did last year after an 8-0 start? Thanks man and good luck....GO HOKIES!
Ernest Wilford (2:04 PM)
At VT we only worry about one game at a time. We are going to go out there, focusing on executing the fundamental aspects of our game -- that's all we can worry about, if we do that right, we can go all the way this year. l
David Jones (Fairfax, Va.)
Ernest, Hope everything is going well with your prep for aTm. What do you see as keys for the offense against A&M? GO HOKIES VT '91
Ernest Wilford (2:05 PM)
Mixing up the passing and running game. We don't want to force anything, we'll react to the type of coverage that they are putting out there against us and limit our turnovers and we should have a great game.
Steve (College Station)
How is coach Beamer preparing VT for possibly playing in a hurricane?
Ernest Wilford (2:07 PM)
Well, we really can't focus on that, if inclemet whether comes, it comes, we can't really prepar for that, but we can gear up for Texas A&M, that's what we're doing.
Wango (Washington DC)
What's up Ernest. I have to say that you are one of the most underrated receivers out there and make some of the most impossible catches. Anyhow, some people have said that you don't have the breakaway speed to be set apart from the rest. Is that something you focus on, and how have you been doing so? Hokies going to the sugar bowl, for sure!
Ernest Wilford (2:09 PM)
Everybody brings something different to the table, some say I don't have enough speed, but I feel that my game comes on making yards after the catch, the fundamentals there is cathing everyball that comes my way, that's the most important thing. If I can do that, I think I'll be ok. Sure everybody has different styles and different strengths but I think I'll do alright, sound fundamentals are most important.
Fin Diesel (DC)
Ernest, you are a beast in NCAA 2k4. You torched A&M for 200 yards, do you think you will on Thursday?
Ernest Wilford (2:11 PM)
If it's in the Lord's will, if that's what is going to happen, I accept it! I have that game, I already played the game out, we actually won that game 49-0 and I had a great receiving day -- but I won't let that comtrol how I play on Thursday night!
Rocky (Greensboro)
Ernest, ever since that drop vs Miami you have been unstoppable. Was that just extra motivation?
Ernest Wilford (2:12 PM)
Yes it was. I often go back and watch that play to see how far I have come, it helps me have the confidence that I have grown and I can make big plays at big times of the game.
Bryan Deege(Vienna, VA)
You are the "go to" receiver this year for VT and are doing a great job. I can't wait to see you playing on Sundays (Hopefully for the Skins) Whoever takes over you role next year is going to have some big shoes to fill. Who do see on the current roster as being able to step into those shoes?
Ernest Wilford (2:14 PM)
That's a tough question to answer, Richard Johnson is very capable a small speedy guy. Jeff is a bigger more physical guy that could step up, David is a young freshman but he will be key some day for sure. Those three would be on the top of my list right now.
Jon Richmond,Virginia
What do you do before the game in the locker room to get in a game mode. I know during the walk alot of you guys have headphones. If you listen to music what do you listen to.
Ernest Wilford (2:16 PM)
Before the game I pray that God will continue to work through me on and off the field. If I am listening to music, I usually listen to gospel music to calm my nerves. I'm ususally so excited for the game I don't need music to get me up I need it to keep me level and calm my nerves.
John (Tampa, FL)
Ernest, Everyone knows that you will be playing in the NFL. If you had your choice of any NFL team to play for, which would it be? Good luck Thursday night. John
Ernest Wilford (2:17 PM)
Hmm, well all of them pay six figures or more so it doesn't really matter which one! Ha ha. Nah, if I had to pick a team, I guess I'd like to stay close to home, but not too close, maybe the Carolina Panthers or something.
Dan (Arlington)
First I want to say that you have been amazing this year so far, and keep up the good work. I want to know, how nice is it for you to have 2 capable QBs there to throw you the ball? Good luck on Thursday.
Ernest Wilford (2:19 PM)
It is great. I feel very comfortable with each of these guys. They have their own style and skills but they are both capable of leading us to victory.
John H.: Arlington, VA
E., For my money, you're the Heisman candidate for the Hokies. Does it bother you that you are not getting the attention that say, Roy Williams gets? Or that the Hokies don't seem to give you the PR that you deserve? Thanks.
Ernest Wilford (2:22 PM)
Nah, it doesn't both me. I know my role here at VT. Virginia Tech has been so good to me, all I"m worried about is going out there and making big plays for them. I am a humble player and I don't pay too much attention to the accolades. BUT, as far as I'm concered the Heisman candiates are DeAngelo Hall or Kevin Jones.
Ben - Roanoke, Va
Ernest, Congratulations on the season thus far, I hope the hokies continue winning. How are Kevin Jones' wrists? I have been on the web and can't find any information about it. I wish you much success this year and hope to be watching you on sunday's after this season. I hope to see you have a repeat performance of the syracuse game last year this thrusday night against A &M. Much continued success...
Ernest Wilford (2:23 PM)
Yes KJ is very healthy and I feel he is going to have an explosive game this Thursday ... and every day he goes out there.
Eric (Crystal City, VA)
E, You are the man! How excited are you to get UM coming into Lane this year???
Ernest Wilford (2:25 PM)
Right now, I'm very excited, but I have to wait for that game to get here, and we have a few stepping stones to worry about first, starting with aTm.
Greg (DC)
Is there one play that sticks in your mind from your first three years at VT?
Ernest Wilford (2:27 PM)
One play that's positive? Hmm, I'd still have to go with that one play against Miami when I dropped the football. I learned so much from that experience and I really believe that nothing but positive growth has come out of that for me. That's definitely the play that will always stick with me.
Ernest Wilford (2:29 PM)
Hey everybody, thanks for all of your questions and support. I want to give a quick shoutout to my brothers at Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, continue to lead by example and lift up the community, boys! Go Hokies!
