Stephania Bell (11:02 AM)
Good morning and Happy Friday everyone. Gearing up for NFL Week 2 - and some of you out there in baseball fantasy playoffs. Injuries abound. Let's get to it...
Will Tolbert return to form 2+ t.d.s after getting hurt against the vikings
Stephania Bell (11:04 AM)
Hi CHaz: First question posted gets the answer...Turns out TOlbert wasn't even on the injury report this week. Thye checked his knee out after the game and he got medical clearance Monday to return. So I think he'll be fine - not sure we can get THAT kind of fantasy performance wch week, but we can hope.
Joe (San Francisco)
Any word on how Lance Moore has looked in his "limited" practices? How long does it take a groin to heal properly without further risk of injury? Is he coming back too soon?
Stephania Bell (11:07 AM)
Joe: Apparently he was running "fluidly" Wednesday. Perhaps the more important note for me was that he was back Thursday. The last time he practiced he was out for days afterward. It will be key to see what he does today. Unfortunately with muscle strains, wide range of recovery times and the only way to know for sure, is to test it in a game and see how it holds up. The Saints didn't want to risk him in Week 1 - turned out to be smart as Colston got hurt. They won't push it with him.
JD (Not where you want to be)
I have B Lloyd and Moreno, do you think they'll be game time decisions or should we know by Sunday? Thanks!
Stephania Bell (11:09 AM)
JD: They could end up being listed as Q and gtd, but we'll have a better idea after this afternoon. If they don't practice at all - and neither has so far - it's a pretty good indication they're out. But remember they're coming off a Monday game so they'll be given an extra day. Probably will create a fantasy question mark for Sunday - but it doesn't seem like either will be at 100% as of now.
What is the latest news on Hakeem Nicks? If he does not play would you rather have Domenik Hixon or Jordy Nelson playing on a fantasy team?
Stephania Bell (11:10 AM)
Colin: I'd rather have Nelson based on what I saw last week and there's unknown with Hixon. That said, if fantasy owners do want to wait and see if Nicks plays and you can pick up Hixon, he's expected to start opposite Manningham if Nicks sits.
Jon (S. Lake Tahoe (getting married))
Calvin Johnson apparently rolled his ankle during last weeks game. What is your take on his injury?
Stephania Bell (11:11 AM)
Jon: COngrats on the upcoming nuptials. Set your lineup in advance...and Johnson did not practice yet this week (not uncommon for him), said he has to get the swelling down but it doesn't hurt and from all the sounds of things, expect he plays.
Travis (Madison WI)
Does SJax really have a chance to play Monday?
Stephania Bell (11:13 AM)
Travis: I believe him when he says he has an "outside" chance. In other words, he wants to give his body up to the last minute to see how it responds. Would say at this point it looks as if he'll sit, but that's the problem with a Monday night game. You won't know until then.
Is Foster going to play? I am facing him this week so I hope you say no or limited, thanks.
Stephania Bell (11:14 AM)
Lee: Sorry to disappoint you, but as of now, I expect he will play - and start. He has done more in practice each consecutive day - and if he comes back today without issue and does everything he needs to, then yes, he will start Sunday. And they plan to use him plenty. Assuming, of course, he doesn't re-injure himself.
Larry (Sprinfield, IL)
With Arian Foster's recent injury, I have Ben Tate and really having a tough time on whether to play him or not bc of the heatlh of foster... Your thoughts....
Stephania Bell (11:17 AM)
Larry: Good follow to the last post. It gets tricky b/c we don't know about Ward. Assume for discussion that Foster starts. The next guy up will get some work, potentially some decent work. Ward has not practiced after spraining his ankle last week, yet he says it's not bad. Tate could maybe be a flex if Ward sits, but if Ward plays his value goes further down. See if Ward practices today first.
Stephania Bell (11:18 AM)
And an update: Megatron returns to practice today - more evidence he's ready for Sunday.
JP (Washington D.C.)
What's the deal with Stevie Johnson's groin?
Stephania Bell (11:20 AM)
JP: Apparently it's sort of a nagging thing that has been in the background. Acted up a little after the first game so he got Thursday off. He's back in practice today so expect him to play.
Hi Stephania - Someone dropped Bradford in my league, and I am tempted to pick him up and DROP Peyton Manning. Good move? My other QB is Stafford.
Stephania Bell (11:22 AM)
Rob: Good question. I would. You know Bradford can give you good Stafford insurance right now. Manning MAY come back this year - but until we get deeper into the rehab aspect of his injury, there's no telling. I like what I can count on right now so, and I never thought I'd say this, Bradford over Manning.
Mike` (portland, OR)
Good Morning, what have you heard about Santonio Holmes, how bad is the injury sounding and do you think he has a chance to play? I knew knew until yesterday that he was injured.
Stephania Bell (11:23 AM)
Mike: Banged up a bit is the way I interpret it, so given a day off to rest. He was very clear that he is playing on Sunday.
Ian (Rhode Island)
Is Jermichael Finley going to play or should I look for someone else?
Stephania Bell (11:24 AM)
Ian: He's expected to play. Coming off the long offseason, etc they're going to take it easy on him, but yes, expect he plays.
Have you heard about Roddy White having any issues with his knee? I saw that he practiced so it mustn't be anything too serious but I was just wondering because it was the first I'd heard of him having any knee trouble. Thanks!
Stephania Bell (11:25 AM)
Bryan: He took a helmet to the thigh in the preseason but it's not anything that was going to keep him out. He'll be there Sunday.
Thoughts on Marques Colston's injury? Could he return sooner than week 6?
Stephania Bell (11:27 AM)
Matt: I think the timetable is optimistic...not unreasonable, but presumes all goes as planned. Has to be further along before you can start really getting a clue as to his healing from this. WOuld say to tack on a couple weeks for good measure -in other words, don't COUNT on him at Week 6.
Any update on Antonio Gates' foot?
Stephania Bell (11:28 AM)
Shaun: Got through last week without any major setback. Not on injury report (always a good sign) - so have to presume he's in good shape for Week 2.
Any Sidney Rice updates?
Stephania Bell (11:30 AM)
Steve: Not really encouraging ones. He did return to limited practice so that's a good thing. But Pete Carroll called him a "long shot" to play this weekend, so the earliest you can hope for is Week 3.
What's the latest on Daniel Thomas from MIA. Does he get some touches this weekend?
Stephania Bell (11:31 AM)
Thomas: I think he does. Back in practice after tweaking a hamstring last week. But the Dolphins are clear that Bush is the starter, at least right now. But they want to get Thomas in the mix, so I imagine they start to do that some this week.
Nick (North Dakota)
How's Roy Williams? Do you think Knox gets more work this week because of that injury?
Stephania Bell (11:34 AM)
Nick: Looks like he will be a gametime decision. I still think Knox will get more work even if he does go. Williams has not been in practice so has not been working with the team. Can't imagine he's that effective if he's in.
Is Bryant ok for this week
Stephania Bell (11:36 AM)
James: He might not be. Jerry Jones - who said he expected Bryant to play - has now retreated from that apparently. Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports he now says it's not a done deal, they hope he feels better by then, they're monitoring it, etc, etc, I take from this that he'll be listed as questionable, we won't know until Sunday and then we won't really know what to expect. Terrific. But that's what you get with Bryant.
It looked pretty bad when Amendola dislocated his elbow yet he says he'll be back soon. Do you think he'll be effective back on the in the near future?
Stephania Bell (11:40 AM)
Cam: This one is getting a lot of questions but the answer is totally uncertain. Here's what we know. He didn't need surgery - which would have been season-ending, and it suggests there was less trauma to the joint than what can happen in the worst case. But without seeing his elbow, how sowllen, how it's moving, etc. it's hard to know. His return is dictated by decreased pain, inflammaiton, getting full range and enough strength back that he can land on it without worry. He apparently wanted to try to play Monday night - a little too soon I'm afraid. I would suspect it would be several weeks at the earliest - but whether that's 3-4 or 6-7 depends on his recovery.
Casey (TX Panhandle)
What's the latest on Mercedes Lewis? Will he go this week?
Stephania Bell (11:45 AM)
Casey: Now there's some concern for real here - he strained a calf in last week's game and missed the second half. Hasn't practiced yet -we'll see if he's out there today but so far, not encouraging.
Tyler (Iowa City)
Brandon Marshall left last week after seeming to twist his knee. Is there any concern there going into this weeks game at Houston?
Stephania Bell (11:46 AM)
Tyler: Mostly cramps for him. He's not on the injury report so should be good to go.
Scott (San Jose)
BASEBALL: Is it time to give up on Mike Stanton or Kevin Youkilis with so little time left?
Stephania Bell (11:49 AM)
Hi Scott and BASEBALL: Youkilis is going to have a tough time getting through the end here. Did you see him last night? I did and it was rough. He's not playing today - and every day you will face the uncertainty of whether he'll be in the lineup. As for Stanton, still likely pinch hitting for the next game or two. Again, uncertainty. Depends what you have for insurance.
BASEBALL: What are the odds Tommy Hanson will be ready for the postseason?
Stephania Bell (11:51 AM)
Bill: He's either getting another bullpen session or going straight to instructional league to face live hitters. They'd like to get him a regular season start to assess how reasonable it will be to expect him for the postseason.
More Playoff Baseball: What do you expect from Beckett tonight? Rays have owned the Sox and I'm not sure what to expect with his ankle sprain....
Stephania Bell (11:51 AM)
Matt: I think they treat it as a regular outing. Sounds like the ankle is not really an issue.
carl (sandy beach (my dreams))
Baseball question... assume Rockies won't rush back their young stars (CarGo and Tulo)?
Stephania Bell (11:53 AM)
Carl: Yep. I'd think they want to protect them. After all, Tulo came back and clearly wasn't fully healthy. Hip probably will keep him out. Cargo now with crashing and bothering the wrist - at least, I would think, down for the weekend. Then we'll see about next week.
what are you hearing about knowshon? is he at risk if making his injury worse by playing, or is it more about playing through pain/discomfort?
Stephania Bell (11:54 AM)
Tim: Probably both. He injured it Monday so you're dealing with a short week. Means less time to recover and that could mean more discomfort, easier to aggravate. No doubt all factoring into the equation.
BASEBALL: But would you start Beckett tonight?
Stephania Bell (11:54 AM)
Dan (Olathe, KS)
As a Jermaine Gresham owner, I'm keeping an eye on Andy Dalton's status given their chemistry. Thoughts?
Stephania Bell (11:56 AM)
Dan: Dalton was back in practice yesterday showing he could grip and throw the ball. The plan was to try longer range throws today but it sounds like the Bengals expect him to start.
Run DMC, should we be worried about his shoulder injury?
Stephania Bell (11:57 AM)
Brian: No. At least not yet. Was a day off to rest after a pretty intense Monday night game. Sounds like the shoulder is not serious. Expectation is that he plays.
Baseball: Is Holliday done for the year? Should he be dropped?
Stephania Bell (11:58 AM)
Bob: Not officially - but he could be. Not allowed to grip anything for several days. He will not test the hand until at least when the team returns from the road (so at least next Tuesday) and not guaranteed to do so even then. Worrisome.
Any reason to be concerned about L. Blount or were his 5 carries simply game plan?
Stephania Bell (12:00 PM)
Nathan: Well I think there's reason to be concerned in the sense that they went away from the run game and then he disappeared. That could happen on a regular basis so...while I think he's going to have some of those amazing games, I think he'll also have some, well, lees than amazing games too.
Big Sam (ATL)
Maclin's health still bother you against a team he ran up 27 FPs on last year?
Stephania Bell (12:01 PM)
Big Sam: Work in progress. It appears he's on the upswing from this virus but it takes a while not only to get back in physical shape but to re-integrate with the team. He'll become more involved - but could take a bit.
Stephania Bell (12:03 PM)
OK everyone - time for me to exit the chat room. Thanks so much for coming! I will have the big Saturday injury blog tomorrow. Then please join us on ESPN2 at 11:30 a.m. EDT for Fantasy Football Now, where we'll have the latest inactives. Good luck in Week 2!!!
