Beano Cook (3:04 PM)
I want to apologize for my pick of Penn State to cover last week. I am now 0-2. I will try to redeem myself at the end of this chat with another pick. If I lose this week I will have to watch local news for six straight hours as a penalty.
John Parks (Portland, Or)
Beano can you tell me why USC wasnt charged with too many men on the field on the final play of their game vs Utah? Play was in progress and over 40 guys are on the field. Shouldn't the officials have called this like LSU got against Tennessee last year and had another chance to have an untimed down?
Beano Cook (3:06 PM)
It sounds like you had Utah. That is part of the big debate in Vegas over this. I did not decide the final score.
T.J. (Norman, OK)
Does the SEC go after West Virginia to even-out the conference at 14 teams?
Beano Cook (3:07 PM)
I do not know what conferences are going to do. I am not going to speculate other than to say a league will probably not go with 13 teams. It has been crazy enough already with this realignment and super conferences.
Why has the site played down espn's role in the break up of the big 12? the longhorn network is what is going to tear it up. it's funny how you go on here and it says ou is staying and you go to other sites and they all say ou is pac12 bound. what do you think about it all? it seems espn is making news instead of reporting it once again
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
Look, I agree with you that the Longhorn Network and Texas may cause the breakup of the Big 12. I have said that before and I say it again. Texas is the NY Yankees of the Big 12. The network is the reason A&M left -- it was the final straw.
Beano, I've been following ND football since 1966, I don't beieve there's been many worse defeats than last Saturday's. That said I still believe that Brian Kelly was the right choice and I believe that he will get them into a BCS game by 2013. Your thoughts?
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
I think Brian Kelly was the right choice and that was a devastating defeat. It is hard to believe Notre Dame lost that game. It is hard to believe that South Florida won at South Bend. All Notre Dame has to do is win 10 games and the Irish will be in a BCS bowl. It is still difficult to comprehend that Notre Dame has not won a national title since 1988.
BK (South Bend)
How much pressure is there on Rick Neuheisel at UCLA? Is this Texas game a must-win situation?
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
I do not know that this is a must-win but he is under a lot of pressure. I cannot understand why UCLA doesn't do better on a consistent basis. It is a mystery to me.
Vince (Salt Lake City)
Beano, You were the ONLY national figure who picked WVU to win the National Championship in the 1987 season. You took some heat for the pick and they went 11-0 before losing to Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. What does your Western-Pennsylvania-based crystal ball tell you about WVU in 2011?
Beano Cook (3:14 PM)
It was the 1988 season. West Virginia should win the Big East, though it will probably come down to the West Virginia-South Florida game.
how do you the the georgia bulldogs will get back on track
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
The schedule gets a little easier. Losing to Boise State and South Carolina is no disgrace. My advice to the coaching staff is to win seven games, and that may not be enough. Mark Richt is certainly on the hot seat. Crowell has to continue to improve.
Beano...even you have to admit Denard Robinson is the most exciting player in the nation.
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
He is up there. The season is only two weeks old. Notre Dame feels he is the most exciting player in the country as he beat the Irish both last year and this year.
Kim (Camden County)
It's going to be asked so I'm going to ask first. Florida vs. TENN ? Who end's up with the Win?
Beano Cook (3:18 PM)
Florida is at home and has a good track record in the rivalry. Will Muschamp is off to a good start, though I have to admit that was a good win for the Vols over Cincinnati last week.
Will Phllip Fulmer ever return to coaching?
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
I do not know but the clock is ticking.
Gay (Palm Beach)
Beano..love the chat. Can Golden return the U to relevance? Will he stay if the sanctions are severe in your opinion?
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
My opinion is that if he wants to leave, he should be permitted to without any penalty. The administration did not tell him about the problems with potential sanctions. I believe he will have no trouble getting another job if he is looking, and one day he will get the opportunity to coach at Penn State.
You are actually "surprised" Notre Dame hasn't won a title since '88? When will ESPN stop propping them up every year as being "back"? Then act surprised when they still fall short? They have been hiding behind their independence and academics for almost 20 years now.
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
What I said was it is hard to believe that it is 20+ years. If you had said that ibn 1988 that they would not win one for another 20 seasons people would have called you crazy.
Terry (Iowa City)
How surprised were you that Iowa State beat Iowa? Can the Cyclones win at Connecticut?
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
Iowa State can win at Connecticut. I thought Iowa would beat Iowa State. It was an upset, but not a big one. This is the first road game for the Cyclones and you have to wonder what the team has left after two emotional, close wins against in-state rivals. Connecticut has a good defense and should have beaten Vanderbilt last week...
Schembechler (Ann Arbor, MI)
Beano, I have heard that the Buckeye Marching Band has been caught selling autugraphed musical instruments on Ebay? Is there any truth to this?
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
I was going to purchse a tuba but it costs to much.
Lance (Destin, FL)
Has Alabama become boring? I'm a Alabama fan and fell asleep during the Bama/Penn State game. They win with the best of them but they have no pizzaz.
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
Pardon me, but a win is a win. The Penn State offense was obviously asleep with you. There is no such thing as a boring win. I am sure coach Saban would prefer 14 boring wins to 12 boring wins and two exciting losses.
Giancarlo Toffoli (St. Jean, Canada)
Mr. Cook, not having been able to watch the Notre Dame-Michigan game in Canada because it was not broadcast unless it was on a shall we say illegal satellite feed, is it now safe to say my beloved leprachauns are about as overrated as the Big Three of the Miami Heat?
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
Put it this way...so far, it is a disappointing season so far for Notre Dame and that is obvious. We will see how this plays out. It is still pretty early.
Isn't is possible for a team to lose early and come back and win the national title? It has happened before.
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
It has happened and yes, there have been teams that lost in November and come back to win the national title. Are you referring to Oregon?
After the first couple of weeks do you think there's another non-AQ team that can follow in the footsteps of Boise and TCU?
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
Boise State can be again. If they go undefeated they would be in a BCS bowl. By the way, Toledo is not going to be an easy game this Friday. Toledo took Ohio State to the wire last week and was driving for the winning touchdown before falling short.
Will Urban Meyer return to coaching with the right offer (enter Ohio State or Notre Dame here)?
Beano Cook (3:32 PM)
I think Urban Meyer will coach again. I think he would prefer those two schools that you mentioned, but he could be lured away. If not, he has a good future in television.
Do you think there could be a rematch of Iowa and Iowa State in a bowl game?
Beano Cook (3:32 PM)
A little early for that but I think the answer is no. If both teams go to a bowl game, they do not want to play each other again.
Hi Beano. I've heard a lot of debate on both sides of the FSU vs OU game this weekend, but I am still not sold that FSU has the speed to keep up with OU, even on their home field and with the well documented non-conference road struggles that OU has had the past five years. Am I crazy thinking FSU is getting close but just isn't "there" yet? If Oklahoma wins the TO margin, I find it difficult seeing a scenario where they don't win by 7-10.
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
It should be a good game in Tallahassee. If Florida State wins this game, there is a good chance that the Seminoles will be playing for the national championship. Oklahoma won 47-17 last year in Norman but this is in Talahassee. Should be a good one.
Kevin (Severn, MD)
Beano, What's your take on all the throwback uniforms? Do you like the uniforms MSU is going to roll out against Michigan this year?
Beano Cook (3:35 PM)
I am not a uniform guy. I like uniforms but it is not a big thing with me either way. My favorite uniforms are worn by the USC song girls. I love those sweaters...they are great.
Be honest with us Beano. Is Notre Dame still one of the top jobs in the country or the biggest headache/
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
Look. Being a head coach at Notre Dame is the toughest job in sports.
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
It is te third toughest-job in the U.S. The order would be mayor of New York, Preisdenr of the United State then head football coach at Notre Dame.
Beano, what are we to do with our time this winter if there's no NBA games to watch?
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
For me, I will watch re-runs of Hawaii 5-0. Believe me, I can live withot the Miami Heat. The NBA owners have to do what the NHL ones did and sit out a year. You need a real salary adjustment in that sport. There are too many have nots compared to the haves.
Bert (Thomasville, GA)
I think I remember you predicting Georgia in the Nat' Championship game. Doesn't matter. Just giving you a hard time. However, I would like your opinion of who owns the hottest seat in coaching at the moment? Does it go to Richt? Neuhisel? Dabo Swinney? Spazziani? Someone else?
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
Richt. Neuheisel is not far behind.
Which is harder head Coach of UK basketball or Notre Dame Football....I call it a draw.
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
No way. Kentucky basketball, the only people that care live in the state. Notre Dame rooters live everywhere. So do the Notr Dame haters, they live everywhere too.
Do Bernard Pierce and Temple knock off Penn State this week or do the Nits bounce back from the rollin' in Happy Valley?
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
I think Penn State should win. My advice to the Nittany Lions is to win this one or face the critics, who would be out in full force. A win would help this week.
Morris (Willmont, WY)
Is there a AJ Green in college today? Most of the good recievers look good to great but not quite elite.
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
Blackmon, Broyles and Floyd are three pretty good ones.
Do I have to mention Notre Dame in a question to get my question posted?
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
Why is there so much hand wringing about the money in conference alignment like it is a new development? If money wasn't involved, we would still have the PAC8 and SWC.
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
You are probably right.
David (Blue Springs, SC)
What has impressed you more? LSU's defense or Bama's defense?
Beano Cook (3:46 PM)
I am impressed with both. See me after they play each other. We have to wait until early November.
Justin (Greenville, Maine)
Best coach in football outside of the state of Alabama is...?
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
That is tough. There are a numkber of candidates. You would have to consoder Steve Spurrier, Bob Stoops and Chris Petersen among the elite.
Charlie (Nashville, TN, area)
Why and how has Texas fallen so far so fast?
Beano Cook (3:48 PM)
Aren't they 2-0. Let's wait a while.
Eric (Scottsdale, AZ)
Beano...my alma mater, the University of Arizona has not lost a home game by more than a touchdown since 2007...there's no way they should be 10 point home underdogs against Stanford, right?
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
There is some truth to that. Maybe you should get to Vegas if you feel that strongly. Perhaps take a mortgage on your house and go out. Just kidding.
I'm a song girl and appreciate your tastes. How good can USC be this year? Their running game looks good. We have one of the best QBs in college today and our defense is improving.
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
Barkley is a super QB but USC should lose 2-3 games. Closer than expected vs. Minnesota and Utah. Hard to believe the Trojans have some trouble running the football. Doesn't anybody remember student body right? They have to have msterial at running back right?
Henry (Suches, GA)
Who do you think is a sleeper in the ACC this year? Clemson? GT? Can North Carolina win big?
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
I don't feel you can say Clemson is a sleeper as the Tigers have material. UNC struggled to get past Rutgers. I would say of the three you mentioned, I would say Georgia Tech.
Beano Cook (3:54 PM)
OK, I am off to a bad start and believe me I feel the pressure. I know what Brian Kelly is going through. Nevada 30, San Jose State 28. See you next week.
