Chat with Dick Vitale
Welcome to SportsNation! On Thursday, Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Dick Vitale stops by to chat some college basketball.
Vitale, college basketball's top analyst and ambassador, joined ESPN during the 1979-80 season. His thorough knowledge of the game is brought forth in an enthusiastic, passionate style.
Send your questions now and join Vitale Thursday at 11 a.m. ET!
Dick Vitale (11:04 AM)
Good to be with you this morning. I want to send my sympathy to Dave Gavitt's family. He played a vital role in creating great interest in the Big East. He would have been shocked beyond belief with Syracuse and Pittsburgh leaving. We have had nothing but wackiness since the last chat. John Marinatto said things will be fine but you cannot replace those teams easily. Jim Boeheim, who I respect tremendously, is heartbroken over the lost rivalries with Georgetown and St. John's.
Thoughts on Kyle Anderson to the Bruins?
Dick Vitale (11:05 AM)
Great move for Ben Howland who needed one of those signings. 6-8, great handle and the real deal who played for Bob Hurley Sr. and it is a major coup for Howland. That is how you win championships, going against Arizona, which has the top class for 2012 according to our gurus Paul Bianciardi and Dave Telep. That signing closes the gap.
Willie (Nova fan)
Will the Big East survive? It is still a good basketball league and that is what it started as and should have stayed as a hoops league. It is sad to see what is going on with the Big East. There are a lot of good basketball programs like Marquette, Villanova, St. Johhn's that do not play football on D-1 or whatever they call it,FBS
Dick Vitale (11:06 AM)
It will survive and they can put together some football schools. It is all based on greed and football. They will have a lot of quality basketball schools. It still has to play out, they say there is unity but I will believe it when I see it. We will see what happens with Connecticut and Rutgers.
tom* (parkville, md)
Do you feel that too little emphasis has been placed on basketball during all the recent conference hopping?
Dick Vitale (11:08 AM)
Yes, there is too much placed on conference shifting and wheeling and dealing. I wish the headlines would be about the games instead of the nonsense of school presidents wheeling and dealing behind the scenes and the lack of integrity. I think the non-revenus producing sports are hurt by these moves and they are forgotten in all of this.
Jon (Upper Iowa)
I'm going to miss MSG and the Big East Tournament with the Orange there, but how exciting is it that the Orange will be playing Duke and UNC much more often now? Shouldn't that be awesome, baby???
Dick Vitale (11:09 AM)
You can say that but what about Syracuse in the Garden and vs. Georgetown or St. John's or the matchup against Miami or Clemson. This will happen three years for now, it will be at least 27 months til all of this happens, as of now.
Why did you hang up on the Le Batard Show?
Dick Vitale (11:12 AM)
Very simple. I am tired of hearing alibis and excuses of people cheating, people involved with sleezy stuff like cash, prostitutes. They said that everybody cheats and that is a cop-out and I get tired of that nonsense. John Swofford said it well when he said people are jaywalking. This was about felonies giving cash. Charges against Shapiro are really serious. By the way, I hung up on his co-host, not on Dan. Not everybody cheats, my friend.
Will there be an NBA season? Do you think some of the kids who left college early are sorry they entered the draft?
Dick Vitale (11:13 AM)
I am beginning to have my doubts. The owners seem unified and it is going to take some real give and take. I think kids who make a decision will be well taken care of so they have to live with that decision.
Ocho (Fort Wayne)
What is your preseason outlook for the Michigan Wolverines.
Dick Vitale (11:14 AM)
Anytime you start with Tim Hardaway Jr. you ahve a shot to have a good year. I feel they will be a first division team in the Big Ten which equates to the NCAA tournament. A school with great academics should have good recruits. I think Michigan will have a good season.
How come there's no love for Creighton? Doug McDermott is awesome.
Dick Vitale (11:16 AM)
I think Creighton will be a contender in the Missouri Valley, where they play very good basketball and the league is underrated. McDermott is the real deal.
jeff (king nc)
dick what we gotta do to get these kids to stay in college more than 1 year. it is killing big time college basketball. it is my favorite sport just like yours.
Dick Vitale (11:18 AM)
This year you have Jared Sullinger and Harrison Barnes. We have to live with what we have and the NBA would have to move because they have the power on this. I have said it for a while that kids should stay for three years like the baseball rule. Basketball needs a czar who can handle issues with marketing, rules, etc. and represent all of basketball. That is an area for people to push for. I wrote that 20 years ago in my books.
Dick Vitale (11:19 AM)
I agree with what my colleague Jay Bilas said recently that kids should be able to make some money based on their names. Guys with integrity and loyalty talk about trust and then they stick a knife in the back of their co-horts...I will let you figure out who did that.
With the Gators losing a lot of size this past season, but maintaining one of the nations best backcourts with Boyton, Walker, Rosario, and the new kid Beal what type of success do you see from the Gators this upcoming season?
Dick Vitale (11:21 AM)
The strength will be their perimeter game and Beal will be special. Billy D knows how to use personnel and incorporate a system which works to their talent. You need to get up and down the floor with quickness and Donovan is bright, knows how to do things in a positive way and he will win. Patric Yougn does give them size inside as well. Florida will have a very good year and the SEC will be strong.
Why is Stan Haith still the coach of the Tigers? Is it becasue the AD will admit he made a mistake as noone at the school or alumni wanted this clown before all the illegal activities he was involved in.
Dick Vitale (11:24 AM)
Frank Haith is the coach because he has not been proven guilty in any shape or fashion. I am sure Missouri people have talked to the NCAA about it. There can be allegations but nothing is proven. John Calipari has been accused of things but nothing has ever been proven. What school wouldn't play Derrick Rose if the NCAA said it was ok. Marcus Camby's people were playing behind Calipari's back and people said he was cheating. Come on, look at facts. I am very fair and honest, what has been proven, it is all rumors, rumors, rumors in the case of Haith. Give me a break. I hate when people make allegations and nothing is proven.
how will these super conferences effect the way the selection committee fields the tournament?
Dick Vitale (11:26 AM)
The bottom line is you have to beat quality teams, develop a good resume and win your share of games. This is still a while for a lot of this to happen.
What can Miss. State expect from Arnett Moultrie this season? Can he turn us around if Sidney stays in shape??
Dick Vitale (11:27 AM)
Mississippi State can be a sleeper. Moutrie was talented at UTEP. Sidney could be a big key if he is in shape.
When will DePaul be good again?
Dick Vitale (11:30 AM)
Oliver Purnell has some work to do but he is a quality coach and he will turn things around but it is tough with the Big East still being strong.
Rusty (Indian Trail)
The Tar Heels have a powerful inside game but do you think they will be fine shooting from the outside?
Dick Vitale (11:31 AM)
They have a lot of weapons, of course led by the NBA frontline of Barnes, Zeller and Henson. They do have some shooters too and keep an eye on James McAdoo, a dynamic diaper dandy who would get even more playing time if it wasn't for that big three. Bullcok's return will help. The Tar Heels are stillt he team to beat in my book.
Alex (Toronto, ONT)
I know Kentucky has the best recruiting class but how good are those duaper dandies, baby!!!!
Dick Vitale (11:34 AM)
Outstanding. Davis, Gilchrist and Teague will be instant impact players and John Calipari has already added a young man named Goodwin for the ensuing season. John has things going in Lexington and Big Blue nation has a lot to be excited about this season. Davis and Gilchrist up front will be special. Remember they also have Terrence Jones and Doron Lamb coming back as well.
How about Turgeon and his staff? They are everywhere on the recruiting trail. Looks like Maryland will be a national title contender by 2013/2014! Fear the Turtle!
Dick Vitale (11:35 AM)
I like what Turgeon did at Texas A&M. It is not easy replacing a legendary coach in Gary Williams. It helps that Turgeon got the 7-1 kid coming in named Lexy

What do you think of the Baylor Bears this year
Dick Vitale (11:36 AM)
This should be a good season for Scott Drew's team. Perry Jones decided to return to school and that was a big positive. He has a good group of newcomers coming in and when Franklin, the transfer from California is eligible, this will be a contender in the Big 12.
Dick, if the upcoming NBA season is wiped out and the impass stretches out, say into the late winter/early spring timeframe, how long before it begins to affect decisions on whether to come out of school early for the draft?
Dick Vitale (11:38 AM)
We have to wait and see how this all plays out. This is a different territory than in the past. If the lockout goes all season that it will likely impact next year's draft and players leaving early. It is too early to tell how it will all work out. The rules of the draft could be determined in collective bargaining too.
Tony (Emporia (KS))
Hey Dickie V will you ever commentate a women's college basketball game? I mean, Brittney Griner from Baylor is sensational! She's a PTP-er! She's a high riser the elevator woman! Where's the love Dickie V? Commentate one of Griner's games baby! She's awesome with a capital A!
Dick Vitale (11:40 AM)
Yes I did a Notre Dame-Connecticut game on a Saturday night a couple of years ago. I love all basketball, be it women's men's, high school or seeing my grandsons Connor and Jake playing in the backyard, baby!
Dick Vitale (11:40 AM)
Griner is super, scintillating and sensational inside. She is truly a force on the court.
Dick Vitale (11:42 AM)
I have to be honest, I am a little depressed about my Rays being swept in a doubleheader by the Yankees yesterday. Joe Maddon has done a super job all season long when you look at that lineup and consider that it really does not match up with what the the Yankees and Red Sox put on the field. Maddon is right up there with Jim Leyland in the AL Manager of the Year race in my view. Maddon is as good as there is in the dugout in baseball.
How do you think Tennessee will fare this season under head coach Cuanzo MArtin.
Dick Vitale (11:44 AM)
It will take some time for Martin to rebuild the Vols. Remember, the SEC is really loaded with Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Florida, Mississippi State, Arkansas, Alabama ... I have always like Cuonzo and I thought it was a good hire. I saw him coach Missouri State last year at Valparaiso and he did a good job there even though they lost that game. Vols fans need to be patient but in the long run he will get it done.
How is Duke looking this year and will Austin Rivers be a difference maker?
Dick Vitale (11:46 AM)
Austin Rivers will be one of the premier impact diaper dandies in America. He has a knowledge of the game which comes from playing and learning from his dad, Doc over the years. I think a key for Duke will be the improvement of the Plumlees inside.
Hope all is well Mr Vitale! We are missing Siesta Key! But on to real business, what do you think of our Buckeyes this year? Enough to contend this year? Thanks hope to see you next year at The Broken Egg or sooner in Columbus!
Dick Vitale (11:47 AM)
It is always beautiful down here at the Broken Egg, baby! Ohio State is my pick to win the Big Ten and a legit contender for the Final Four, With Sullinger, William Buford, Aaron Craft and company, Thad Matta will be smiling big time.
Dick Vitale (11:47 AM)
Great nw for Kansas fans as Bill Self hit a home run by singing Perry Ellis. That was exactly what they needed.
Dick Vitale (11:48 AM)
I just wanted to send my sympathies to the family of colleague Dari Nowkwah, who lost his son Jaydon earlier in the week. My heart goes out to the whole family over this tragic passing. See you next week.
