Beano Cook (3:05 PM)
Good afternoon. I am sorry that my prediction last week did not work out too well with Georgia against Mississippi. I am currently 1-3 but looking to rebound as I will have another pick at the end of today's chat...It looks like a bad year but I will try to rebound. The baseball has to end the season on time. We don't need an extra day of that, yet we could have two tomorrow. Four games tonight with meaning.
Daniel (Birmingham, AL)
How serious of a contender will the winner of the Clemson-Virginia Tech game be in the national championship race?
Beano Cook (3:07 PM)
They could be, especially if it is Virginia Tech. If the Hokies win the schedule is more favorable. Remember Clemson still has South Carolina. The Tigers would be in the hunt too after wns over Florida State and Clemson. The winner of this game should definitely be in the ACC Championship game.
Would it be good for college football for Luck and Robert Griffiths of Baylor to be the only 2 Heisman candidates? The trophy could be awarded based on the performance in a debate regarding the European Debt Crisis.
Beano Cook (3:08 PM)
First if al, it is Griffin. Look, it is still September. Ask me in November about the Heisman Trophy. As for debates, they are tiresome.
Phillip (a stadium near you)
Beano,Could you believe that the official under the goalpost and the replay official thought that extra point was good in the Syracuse-Toledo game?
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
I believe anything is possible after watching Congress in action. It was unbelievable. How did they miss that up in the replay booth. It really did cost Toledo the game. This is a team that played well against Ohio State, played OK against Boise State and then this happened. The person who was most upset about this in Toledo was Corporal Klinger. Amazing.
Mr. Cook (Salt Lake City)
At the end of the regular season, how many teams to you think will be undefeated? Prediction as to who that will be?
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
It is still so early. No more than three of the teams currently in the top five because LSU plays Alabama, Oklahoma faces Oklahoma state. Boise State has the best chance to go undefeated. From the BCS conferences, no more than three teams will go go through the regular season unbeaten in my opinion.
Mike W. (Florida)
I'm a diehard Iowa hawkeye fan lately ive seen something that i havent seen in 15 years a offense that is unpredictiable and doesnt always run. In the game that Iowa came back from 21 point deficit(school record) i just about gave up but they didnt they came out passing and not being so conservative. Last week against ULM we came out passing again! do you think this will continue? do you think this makes our offense better? and what do you think about iowa apperence in the confrence championship?
Beano Cook (3:14 PM)
I think Iowa will have a tough time winning some of the Big Ten teams they have on the schedule. At Penn Satte despite past history, and at Nebraska will be tough. We will see.
Beano, we are going to make you the commissioner over college football with the power of a David Stern. What is your first act and what is your long term goal for college football?
Beano Cook (3:18 PM)
Since I am 80, there is not a long-term to be honest. I would make the song girls a national treasure. That would be step one. Seriously, I would try to do something to make the game a little shorter. Some of these 3 1/2 hour games are brutal. I might have a meeting and decide about stopping the clock after each first down. I would leave that up to a committee of coaches to make the final decision. Another thing, I would not permit NCAA games to be televised on Friday nights. Those are for high school football games in my opinion.
Mathew (Ringgold, Ga )
Do you think Mark Richt is off the hot seat, and if not what will it take to get him off?
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
I think he has to beat Florida. He is trying to get off the hot seat but klet's face it, those are not necessarily great opponents that the Bulldogs beat. The crucial game for him is against the Gators. The seat is still very warm, but it is much hotter in Oxford.
Why do some writer's/analysts not like the idea of super-conferences? Doesn't that get us closer to a "playoff system" while still allowing for bowl revenue.
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
There won't be super conferences unless the Big 12 breaks up for good. If we do have four super conferences, then we will have a four-team playoff to decide the national championship. I am not sure if it will be a while before we have to worry about that. I am not sure what is going to happen with the BIG 12. I am not convinced that the conference will stay together.
Beano, is this trend of big athletic mobile QBs, who have somewhat limited pocket passing skills, the wave of the future or just a trend?
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
I think that the way the rules are made, that is the way it is going to be. The rules encourage teams to throw the football. That is just the way I see it.
Manish Jhurani (Torrance, CA)
Beano! I've been trying to have my question posted for 10 straight years but you never take it! Are my Sooners going to hold up on defense??
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
First of all, I took your question. Happy anniversary. They have a lot of talent despite the tragic passing of Box, but a lot will depend on stopping Oklahoma State and Justin Blackmon on December 3rd. Oklahoma State is a darkhorse to play for the national title.
Beano, does a play-off really produce a "season champion?" Or does it just reward teams that are peaking at the right time...
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
That is right to peak at the right time. Face it, you can have this argument all the time about producing a champion. Was Connecticut the best basketball team last season? The Huskies won that national championship so the banner is flying in Storrs.
Mr. Cook: The two-QB system rarely works. If you were Joe Paterno, who would you choose to be your every-series starter?
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
I would pick one quarterback and stay with him. I don not the two-quarterback system. I would agree with you, it does not usually work.
I see the Irish running the table except for Stanford...agree/disagree?
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
There is a good chance. Notre Dame has better material than almost every team ont he schedule left than Stanford. The Irish ,ay have better materia. than Stanford. If Notre Dame runs the table than the team will be in a BCS bowl.
Bryan (Springdale, AR)
Haven't heard you talk to Colin lately on The Herd, what gives?
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
He doesn't want me.
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
Colin has enough guests.
How do you have your top 3 ranked?
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
LSU, Oklahoma, Alabama.
F. Leghorn (Kentucky)
Beano, does Kentucky have a shot against top ranked LSU this weekend? You know, we beat their championship team back in 07 in triple overtime...
Beano Cook (3:32 PM)
I remember that. LSU is around a 30-point favorite, so I do not think it will happen.
Giancarlo Toffoli (St. Jean, Canada)
Mr. Cook, now that "turnover" Tommy is in charge of the offense in South Bend, does this mean every snap will be a sequence of nail biting and sewer language followed by covering my eyes with my hands?Thank you
Beano Cook (3:35 PM)
Notre Dame will have a good season...enough said.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
What time will be Kickoff for Army vs. Rutgers at Yankee Stadium on Saturday November 12?
Beano Cook (3:35 PM)
Check your local listings.
What contract is most unfair. ND NBC contract or Texas ESPN contract?
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
This is America, what is unfair? You may not like either contract but this is America and it is called capitalism. I have no problem with either. Notre Dame has every right to make a contract deal, but what I did not like is the way they did it...that was bush league.
I have been listening to you for 40 years, is that possible?
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
I guess you wasted a lot of your time. I have been around for a while, my friend.
Mark (New Castle)
How come Duke has improved and Indiana really hasn't.
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
Duke is in an easier conference. Give the coach some credit as the win at BC was good. At Indiana it is tough to have a consistent winner in football.
Max (West Hartford, Ct.)
Isn't it strange to see Ohio State and Michigan State out of the tiop 25 but Illinois is in there?
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
Yes it is, I agree. Illinois plays Northwestern this week. You are right, that seems strange.
GAME....COCKS!!! They get it together this weekend and play a great game on both sides of the ball. Wounded Warrior Project jerseys to honor veterans! USA! USA! USA!
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
I am happy for Steve Spurrier. Marcus Lattimore is one of the most exciting players in college football. Stephen Garcia is one of the most interesting.
Ted (New York)
Can you believe LSU jumped Oklahoma in the AP poll...I know that polls shouldn't matter but Oklahoma beat Missouri and Florida State the last two weeks...that was not like beating cupcakes.
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
I am not really surprised. LSU has won at Mississippi State and West Virginia and beat top-five Oregon at a neutral site.
Lou (Rockville, MD)
Beano, there's a ton of scuttlebutt around regarding Urban Meyer to PSU. Personally I think there's a better chance of me becoming coach there, but what do you think?
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
I have heard the same rumor. We will see what happens.
What about the unfair recruiting advantages that the Longhorn Network gives Texas. I also don't have a problem with ND having a NBC contract. SEC and other conferences make more money now.
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
That is one of the problems facing that conference. It is the reason Texas A&M left ans one of the reasons Colorado and Nebraska left.
How good is Georgia Tech? They can run the football...
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
We will find out as the season is only four weeks old. They bet North Carolina and they certainly can run, which is nothing new under coach Paul Johnson. He ran well at Navy and is doing it at Georgia Tech.
I thought Kentucky would be a little better. I was surprised by the loss to Louisville and then bad blowout vs. Florida.
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
LSU this week...good luck. Especially on the road. Basketball season starts very soon in Bluegrass Country.
what makes a better team: A tougher schedule so that the team (and its opponents) learn from mistakes, or a cupcake schedule where nothing is tested (but nothing exposed)?
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
It depends on the program, to be honest. Some schools have to load up on cupcakes, others play a LSU-like schedule. You do learn from mistakes.
Who ya got, Beano? Huskers or Badgers?
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
I like Wisconsin to win at Madison. I am not sure if the Badgers will cover or not. I like Russell Wilson at QB. If he has a great game, you will hear talk about the Heisman. I wish Coach O'Brien at NC State wishes he still had Russell Wilson. Sometimes it doesn't pay to be stubborn.
Beano Cook (3:55 PM)
Time for the pick. I am 1-3 and am losing confidence. so it is back to the drawing board. I feel like the Kansas City Chiefs. Take the points, North Carolina 27, East Carolina 24. Have a good week.
