Beano Cook (3:06 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome back to our weekly chat. I am disappointed that my record is 1-4 after East Carolina lost to North Carolina. I will make another prediction and try to stop my slide at the end of this chat. If my picks were in a Little League Baseball game, they would have called it already. I do not know what to do, I feel like a Republican in Chicago.
How many Heisman's would Kellen Moore have won if he played for USC, ND, Mich or one of the other traditional powers?
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
I don't know. He would not have the same stats that he has at Boise State either. He is a heckuva quarterback and he could win it at those schools. He could win it this year, it is hard to say at this stage. If I had to pick the two leading candidates right now, it would be Andrew Luck of Stanford and Wisconsin's Russell Wilson. Remember, we have nine more Saturdays in the regular season. At this time last year, if you had said Cameron Newton of Auburn would win the Heisman people would have said you were crazy.
Beano Cook (3:11 PM)
Looking ahead to the remaining Saturdays in October, I would say one of the best games would be Clemson at Georgia Tech. Clemson is for real after beating Auburn, Florida State and at Virginia Tech in a row. This is the 30th year, anniversary of Clemson winning the national title in 1981.
Red River Shootout (sorry, the Rivalry thing doesn't work for me) could be a one-sided blood bath. What does Texas have in it's arsenal that may encourage a UT fan to think they can keep it close against OU?
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
Last year was 28-20 and it was a rough year for the Longhorns. Number one, it is a rivalry game. You may be right about it being one-sided, but we will see. Texas has been a pleasant surprise and last week's win at Iowa State was pretty impressive and not close.
Beano does Michigan have a shot this Saturday in Evanston?
Beano Cook (3:14 PM)
Michigan is the favorite in the game. The Wolverines have Robinson and more material and should win there. That doesn't mean they will. By the way, this could be the yearthat Michigan beats Ohio State.
What is wrong with the Eagles? Is Spaz on the hot seat?
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
He is definitely on the hot seat. Unless things turn around, Boston College will make a change. I am nto saying that it is justified, but I am saying the BC brash realizes it is not easy to win in football there. It is not like hockey. The loss to Duke definitely hurt them.
JP (Columbus, OH)
Beano, I'm having trouble finding 6 wins on the schedule for Ohio State this year. You?
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
I thought they would win six games, but right now the Buckeyes are in trouble. I will stick to my original prediction that if, and I am not saying the change should be made, I am saying if, then Urban Meyer would be my pick to be the next Buckeye coach. Nebraska will be very angry this week after what happened at Madison, and the game is at Lincoln. If the Ohio State band makes the trip, make sure you are in your seats when they dot the I...if you don't, than you are not a football fan.
What do you mean Beano, Michigan won last year the Buckeyes lost every game for illegal players!
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
Tell that to the local bookie...
Who is the most underrated team in America? Georgia Tech? Kansas State? Whattdya think Beano
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
I would say Kansas State because they won at Miami and beat a pretty good Baylor team last week in a wild one. Give Bill Snyder some credit. Missouri will not be an easy one.
If the Bama/Florida play in a rematch will the game be much closer since it will be a good chance they play in the SEC title game. It looked like Florida fell apart physically/emotionally. Your thoughts?
Beano Cook (3:23 PM)
Brantley's injury changed the game. Alabama-Florida could be the title game after South Carolina lost to Auburn last week. I would say the Georgia-Florida game will determine the SEC East winner. The pressure on the Bulldog coaching staff would be immense in that game.
Beano, has the SEC become the Rome of College Sports?
Beano Cook (3:23 PM)
College football, yes. Not overall college sports.
Dennis (UNC grad)
Are you surprised that Duke is playing pretty well?
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
Yes, absolutely. Good win last week over Florida International. Florida State is up next week, and that will help determine the true progress of the Blue Devils.
Fred (Walla Walla)
Will Wisconsin's cushy 8 home game schedule leave them on the outside looking in if they are one of 3 undefeated teams at the end of the year?
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
It depends which teams are undefeated. The Alabama-LSU winner, if it goes unbeaten, would be number one. I would say Oklahoma would get it over Wisconsin if they went unbeaten. I feel Wisconsin should play at least one tough non-conference games a season. I believe only a few schools will do it. USC, Florida State and UCLA are three teams that do it. Wisconsin needs to toughen up the schedule a little bit.
Giancarlo Toffoli (St. Jean, Canada)
Mr. Cook,as much as I do not like to admit it because I am a fan of the leprechaun, the Wolverines are entertaining to watch. Would it be possible and probable for them to play in a BCS bowl? The remaining games are not easy and their coaching staff should be commended.
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
Michigan has a shot but it has to win against the tougher part of its schedule. Michigan-Michigan State will be a big game for both teams. In case you haven't heard, they don't like each other. Brady Hoke has done a good job. Michigan did beat Notre Dame but this week is a road challenge for sure.
ISU an impressive win? Thats insanity, road game or not. BYU and UCLA are pretty mediocre too. OU wins by 14+
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
Do you think its smart for the Big Least (East) to add Navy and Air Force for football only?
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
If they can get those schools they should do it.
Beano, Your thoughts on Tommy Rees. Ithink he should have never played a game this year. He turns it over way to much. he has had some good drives late in games but the games r only close because of all of his turnovers. I would rather have any of the other 3 get a chance. And a fair chance i mean one half of a game for Christ he only had 1 turnover. Rees had 9 only playing 3and a half games and he doesnt get pulled.
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
Number one, I think he has done a good job. The Irish almost beat Michigan. He keyed the drive late in the game in the win over Pittsburgh. What else do you want from the young man, Roger Staubach? Notre Dame will be favored in every game for the rest of the season except for the Stanford contest.
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
Brian Kelly is going to get the job done at Notre Dame. It is a lot tougher to do the job now than it was 50 years ago, and I believe he will get it done.
What is your take on Illinois? Have they finally turned a corner of some type? Is this when Zook is able to recruit on a more consistant basis and produce consistant winners?
Beano Cook (3:36 PM)
Let's see what happens when they play Wisconsin. The two schools that have puzzled me the mist over the last 50 years in terms of winning more often are Missouri and Illinois. It is tough to figure out. By the way, I did have tickets for the Rangers-Rays because they were available.
How disappointing was that loss to Auburn for Steve Spurrier?
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
Had to be devastating. The SEC East is pretty wide open right now. The West is down to two teams obviously. Florida has to go to South Carolina at the end of the year and it is funny but Spurrier has to root for Georgia to beat Florida, how ironic.
What, in your opinion, really holds Notre Dame back from being a consistent top 15 program? Sure, odd coaching hires plays in to it, but what else do you think they could do from an overall program perspective to become relevant (i.e. becoming winners) again? They have every single inherent advantage you could ask for yet never produce on the field.
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
Notre Dame is always relevant. Anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't understand college football. Alabama, USC, Michigan, Ohio State, any power could win 10 national titles in a row and they wouldn't have their own TV network. Notre Dame has NBC and they are always relevant. The only time I get upset about Notre Dame is when they talk about academics. They always get material and that bothers me. Don't tell me academics is th factor they claim to be.
If GT goes undefeated in the regular season but loses to Clemson in the ACC Championship will they still get a BCS bowl bid?
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
Depends oh what else happens to other teams that are currently undefeated.
How do you think USC is doing? Game against Arizona was too close...
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
It remains a mystery to me what has happened to the USC defense. They are giving up more points in one game than some NBA teams do, when the NBA teams are locked out. The owners should sit out the whole season if they are losing that much money.
Do ya think the Big East was privately happy that Rutrgers bear Syracuse last weekend
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
I would say yes, to be honest with you. They were unhappy when Pittsburgh beat South Florida. They would probably not admit that publicly. By the way, I do not blame them.
MIke (Los Angeles, CA)
Do you think that we will see Mike Leach back in the coaching ranks next year? I cannot believe he is not coaching. I mean, he won big-time at Texas Tech!
Beano Cook (3:46 PM)
I do not know. A school looking for a coach with a winning record may hire him.
Nick (Macon, Ga.)
You have seen alot of football teams in your day.Does Alabama and LSU both have historic defenses?
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
They are both very good, but it is not over yet. Ask me after November 5th, then I will be able to answer that better.
Beano, Wisconsin beat the No. 8 team in the nation by 31 points. They must be really awful.
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
Come on, I never said anything like that...when did I say they were not good. Before I was asked if Oklahoma and Wisconsin were both unbeaten tat the Sooners would be in the title game. To be honest, if Alabama and Wisconsin played on a neutral field right now, The Tide would be favored by 6-7 points. We will see, that could be the national title game, we will see.
Mike (Los Angeles, CA)
Do you think college football loses a little of its' luster when conferences line up with teams that are not geographic/historic rivals?
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
Yes, I would say that is a good observation. I have to admit I hate it when rivalries disapear.
How are your going to survive this year without NBA pre-season games?
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
It is going to be tough. Wanted to see Clippers-Cavaliers in some college town. Hopefully they will still meet in the regular season.
Where does Missouri think it is going after they said they would consider leaving the Big 12? Are you serious, Beano? Who the heck wants them?
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
The SEC might want them as a 14th team to add with Texas A&M. If I am the Big 12, I do not want Missouri to leave. Hearing what Missouri voted on, it seems like they want out.
Is that really accurate - That the Irish have their own TV network? Would NBC cease to exist without Notre Dame? Would Saturday Night Live move to Fox if Notre Dame left? Would GE stop making light bulbs? Please, Beano.
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
Your observation is absurd.
Thomas (SEC country)
Face it, everyone is looking forward to LSU-Alabama and it seems like that will overshadow a lot of good games...
Beano Cook (3:55 PM)
There are a lot of good games. That is the biggest game of the year as of right now. Oklahoma-Oklahoma State should be a very good game. Oklahoma-Texas this week is a good game this week and that is where Gameday will be.
Kenneth Faulhaber (Livingston Texas)
Do you see the Longhorns getting past the Sooners? if so do u see them finshing the season unbeaten and playing in a bcs bowl
Beano Cook (3:57 PM)
I see Oklahoma winning the game. It should be a good one. Ironically, that is my pick for the week. Since I am 1-4, you may want to go the other way. I am not going to duck out and resign. I am picking Oklahoma 28, Texas 24. Ivan Maisel, who is 3-2, things Oklahoma will win easily. We will see on Saturday. Thanks for all of your questions, see you next week, same time.
