Beano Cook (3:03 PM)
I am so sorry that I am 1-5. I now have bars on all of my windows on the 11th floor. There are special security guards outside the door because people are mad about my picks. The mayor asked that I stay in my apartment because he doesn't want the crime rate to go up if there is a murder in Pittsburgh. If this was Little League Baseball, it would be called off. I feel like a Republican in Chicago. I will make another pick at the end of the hour as the chat winds down. You may want to go the other way.
Larry (Arvada, CO)
Why all the hate at ESPN for WVU? They may have not beat LSU, but LSU had to fake injuries... and WVUs turnovers helped out LSU... But Oregon is a Top 10 school after their loss and WVU is barely being ranked by some ESPN analysts.
Beano Cook (3:05 PM)
I do not dislike West Virginia. I have no control over what other people think. I don't believe the general feeling at ESPN is hate for the Mountaineers. I feel you are complaining about something that isn't there. Didn't West Virginia clobber Connecticut in the second half last week?
Smitty (So Boston)
I know you've said before that BC's demise is due to bad QBing. But, it's much more than that isn't it? They look like they'll be down for a long time.
Beano Cook (3:08 PM)
I have not talked about qb there. The Eagles are simply having a bad year. The school made a big mistake when it fired its previous coach, Jeff Jagodzinski. It was also a mistake forcing Tom O'Brien out. Boston College should be more concerned about its football program than which schools want to go to the ACC.
Isn't it strange to have no Florida teams in the top 25?
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
Yes, that is a good observation. It is strange since Florida, Florida State and Miami have such good tradition. What sticks out in the top 25 is the fact there are still 13 unbeaten teams. There are 11 in the six BCS conferences, with Boise State and Houston the two unbeatens among the non-AQ.
sweatervested1 (Gulf Shores,Al)
Beano, Does Bama have anything to worry about with Ole Miss and Tennessee?
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
You still have to play the games. Alabama probably was aided when Bray, the Vols QB got hurt.
Mr. Cook: In your opinion is it more likely that Penn State goes 7-5 with a minor bowl bid or that they win at least nine games and get a New Year's Day bowl?
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
I don't think Penn State will win nine games, though it is still a possibility. If they can beat Purdue and Northwestern then they do have a shot at nine wins.
Beano, simple two part question here: First, why is ND not ranked but Texas A & M (with two massive chokes) is? Second, why is Boise not ranked ahead of Wisconsin based on what we have seen thusfar this year? Put simply, Boise has been more impressive against better competition through 5 games.
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
I agree with you on Notre Dame. The Irish have played better later. As for the Boise State vs. Wisconsin thing, the voters feel the Badgers have the better team. I do not have a vote, or else I would tell you how I voted.
There was recently a 22-minute delay for a college replay review...how crazy is that?
Beano Cook (3:14 PM)
That was in the WAC and that is crazy. I agree, a replay should never take as long as 5-10 minutes. It should be quick and the game moves on. Maybe a member of Congress was handling the replay.
Devin (Camp Pendleton CA)
With the Big 12 Big East and SEC shifting all around do you think Boise is going to go to the Big East and if so do you think the Big East is gonna lose there AQ status
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
Boise is a little far for the Big East. The AQ status is in trouble with Syracuse and Pittsburgh going to the ACC.
Do you prefer round robin conference schedules or championship games for conferences?
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
I like the idea of having a championship. It gives the teams a chance to play for a title but a lot of schools will not play tough non-conference games and that is one thing that bothers me. Fans of Penn State should feel lucky they play one.
Are you surprised that Arizona fired its coach during the season? Do you think schools should just waity until the end of the season.
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
I would have been surprised years ago, but nothing surprises me now. Arizona lost to Oregon State, which was winless coming into the game. Mike Stoops paid the price for that loss. It is all about winning, and if you do not win today, you do now keep your job. The pressure to win today is a lot tougher than it was 40 years ago. Schools used to show more patience.
JL (Warrenton, VA)
Does Luke Fickell really have any chance of being named Ohio State's permanent head coach? Did he ever really have a chance or was he a throw-away interim coach to go along with a throw-away season this year?
Beano Cook (3:23 PM)
The odds are against him now for sure. The second halkf collapse against Nebraska on Saturday night was oomplete disaster. Ohio State has Penn State, Illinois, Wisconsin and Ohio State on the schedule so the opportunity to win some big games is there. However, if Urban Meyer is interested and Ohio State doesn't find out if he is interested, heads should roll in the athletic department. If you look at how they handled the problems earlier in the year, you have to wonder if they are competent enought to handle anything anyway.
Is Kansas the worst team in America?
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
I do not know though some could make a case...have you seen the Indianapolis Colts or Philadelphia Eagles lately. In Lawrence, basketball season starts with Midnight Madness on Friday.
Did you watch the Republican debate last night?
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
I watched a rerun of the Mary Tyler Moore show, and then the Bob Newhart show.
Pierce (Fines Creek, NC.)
Hey Beano: been following U for over 40 years. Your thoughts on Coach Spurrier's sport writers spat? Is he the bad guy for speaking up when a story is un-true in his opinion? Wouldn't you speak up?
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
I thought it was over a basketball player...members of the media must realize that coaches and players have a complaint about us. Many members of the media can dish out criticism but cannot take it. Howard Cosell proved that every time he was critical of the print media.
Mike (Los Angeles)
What was the most entertaining game that you ever attended?
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
Hard to say. The greatest game was Alabama 24, Penn State 23. To be honest, I just don't know.
Do you think Oklahoma State is getting enough publicity? The Cowboys have been putting up lots of points this season and I think Mike Gundy doesn't get the credit he deserves...
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
I agree. Oklahoma State has a chance to play for the national title. They have to beat Texas and Oklahoma and that is not easy. Dceember 3rd in Stillwater should be exciting. We have eight Saturdays left to help determine things. You have a lot of teams in the hunt and they will help clear things up. The game of the year right now is LSU-Alabama on November 5th in Tuscaloosa.
Beano: any insight on who might be the next coach at PSU?
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
My opinion is there will be a new head coach next year. If I had to give you a few names, I would give you Urban Meyer and Skip Holtz.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Even though you Cover College Football, Did you ever knew Oakland Raiders Owner Al Davis Who Passed Away at the Age of 82 On October 8?
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
I did not know him well but I did know him. My one word to describe him would be intriguing.
Andrew (Fishers, IN)
where and who do you think ND plays if they win out the rest of their season?
Beano Cook (3:36 PM)
It is hard to say. They would be in a BCS bowl if they do win out. My guess right now would be the loser of the Alabama-LSU game. The Irish could be in a very good bowl game. At 10-2 the Irish would be in, no ifs, ands or buts.
You weren't at the 1973 Sugar Bowl- ND 24 Alabama 23??Isn't that the greatest game of the last 40 years?
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
That was what I meant...my typist screwed up...
How good is Michigan? This weekend should be a great game.
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
That will be a very attractive game at noon Saturday. Michigan State has dominated the series in recent years. Give Brady Hoke credit.
What do you thinbk of Maryland's Randy Edsall now?
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
He's having a tough stretch but it is his first year. He has five games...look how many games Kirk Ferentz of Iowa won in his first two years? Iowa fans wanted him fired. Be patient.
Is Clemson finally a "good" time. By "good" I mean...should win the games they should win?...or too early to tell?
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
Clemson proved itself when they beat Virginia Tech on the road. Beat Auburn and Florida State too. The big game is coming up against Georgia Tech, plus the Tigers have South Carolina later in the season. I think that Virginia Tech win was very big, especially in Blacksburg.
The Game of the Century 1966 Notre Dame - Michigan State game gets my vote as greatest game ever
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
I was there and it was not the greatest game ever, sorry.
Who is more overrated at the moment? Oklahoma St, Michigan, or Clemson?
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
I don't think any of those three are overrated or underrated given what they have done so far. We will find out a lot about Michigan this weekend in East Lansing.
Should Barry Alvarez be named "AD of the Decade" for Wisconsin's schedule; 8 home games with the first road game 8 weeks into the season?
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
If Wisconsin finishes with a perfect record and doesn't play for the national title, the weak non-league schedule will be a key reason. If Alabama, Oklahoma and Stanford are all undefeated, and the Badgers are as well, Wisconsin should be in fourth place.
If Urban Meyer takes over the PSU job, how long until they are a dominant team again?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
I don't know when they would be a dominant team. Urban Meyer is a great coach and had one of the best players of all time in Tim Tebow for years. That helped a bit. We will see if Meyer wants to leave television, where he doesn't have to worry about recruiting. He has done a good job here.
How can you say Wisconsin's non-conference schedule is any easier than Stanford's?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
Notre Dame game ends your argument.
If Brady Hoke wins this weekend is he coach of the year in the B1G that will be 7-0 and probably 9 or 10 wins this year, about 3-4 more wins than anybody predicted!
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
Hoke has done a good job. I don't know about Coach of the Year. Consider guys like Kansas State's Bill Snyder, and it is tougher to win there. It is not tough to win at Michigan. The over/under would have been seven wins but the one game did not count.
Can Wisonsin play with LSU or Alabama?
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
Russell Wilson makes it more interesting. To tell the truth, Wisconsin has the ability to beat those teams, but I don't think they would. If the Badgers won a meeting with them it would not shock me.
MattR (Metry, LA)
Beano, what is your opinion on Brad Wing's (LSU punter) touchdown reversal due to "taunting"... ?? I've seen much worse, including that very day in the Arkansas game, that was not called and I thought this new rule was only supposed to be enacted in "egregious" cases of taunting...
Beano Cook (3:54 PM)
I thought it was a chicken call, to be honest.
Beano Cook (3:56 PM)
First, let me explain that I have a contest with Ivan Maisel, who is 4-2 this season. He thinks Washington beats Colorado by three touchdowns. I tell you that because he is good. He feels they will easily beat the spot. Mississippi State is getting a few points against South Carolina. Bulldogs 24, Gamecocks 21. Thanks for the questions, see you next week.
