Chat with Bernard Hopkins
Welcome to SportsNation! On Wednesday, we're going inside the boxing ring when legendary champ Bernard Hopkins stops by to chat about his WBC light heavyweight title fight this weekend.
Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KO) takes on challenger Chad Dawson (30-1, 17 KO) with Hopkins' WBC belt at stake. The fight will be live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Saturday at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on HBO PPV.
Hopkins faces Dawson in his first title defense after defeating Jean Pascal in May to become, at 46 years, 4 months and 6 days, the oldest champion in boxing history. Since moving up to light heavyweight in 2006, Hopkins is 6-1-1 in his eight fights.
Send questions now and join Hopkins Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. ET!

Bernard is here!
matt (austin)
Bernard:In your opinion, why should we buy this fight?
Bernard Hopkins (12:30 PM)
Because of Bernard Hopkins.
Dan (NY)
How many push-ups are you gonna do in between rounds Saturday?
Bernard Hopkins (12:30 PM)
I'm going to be doing more punches than push ups, unfortunately.
Matt (Chicago)
Do you cut any weight to fight at light heavyweight?
Bernard Hopkins (12:31 PM)
I had to train for 9 weeks. But any weight that's been cut has been cut already.
Paulo (West Chester, PA)
Is the executioner mask back for your entrance on Saturday? I personally think the mask should be on with DMX's "X Gon' Give It To Ya" blasting during your entrance. Good luck B-Hop!
Bernard Hopkins (12:31 PM)
Absolutely.
Remon Tuck (Fort Worth)
With a W this saturday night will you fight again?
Bernard Hopkins (12:31 PM)
No idea.
Matt (Chicago)
What do you still want to accomplish at this point in your career?
Bernard Hopkins (12:32 PM)
At this stage, not only have I been one of the top fighters in the last 10, 15, maybe 20 years, but I still am able to make history at this time. That's rare. That's why I do it.
Billy (NYC)
What can you tell us about Dewey Bozella, the 2011 Arthur Ashe Courage Award Winner at this year's ESPYs? Is he an inspiration to you?
Bernard Hopkins (12:33 PM)
He's more to me of a warrior in the sense of willing to stay in jail for the rest of his life knowing that he's not going to plead guilty for something that has been proven to be innocent. He showed more than just an inspiration. He took it a step further.
Matt (Chicago)
What problems does Dawson pose to you in this fight?
Bernard Hopkins (12:34 PM)
Right now, the only thing I can say is until the moment in the ring.
Justin (Kentucky)
Good luck Saturday night, champ. Will this fight be your toughest fight to date? If not, what was?
Bernard Hopkins (12:35 PM)
I can't anticipate it being my toughest until it happens. I don't know what it's going to be until we're in the ring and it's set. But I can say he's 19 years younger. That seems to be the separation point in my career. I hope he comes with the same drive I am coming through with. Everybody wins with a good fight if that happens.
wesley (pipez)
bernard, you are arguably the greatest 40+ athlete in sports history. every thought about writing a book on health and nutrition?
Bernard Hopkins (12:35 PM)
Yes.
Bernard Hopkins (12:35 PM)
All of the time.
Matt (Chicago)
Do you find yourself having a greater speed advantage at light heavyweight compared to when you fought at lighter weights?
Bernard Hopkins (12:36 PM)
Absolutely. And foot speed.
Stag (Auburn, Ala.)
What is your opinion of the finish of the Mayweather, Ortiz fight?
Bernard Hopkins (12:36 PM)
Mayweather reacted off of the action and I think it was justified.
John H (Augusta GA)
Good luck Saturday Bernard, been a big fan of yours for a long time, what fight do you remember the most? And who would you face if you could face anyone in history?
Bernard Hopkins (12:36 PM)
Felix Trinidad 2001.
Matt (Chicago)
Do you plan on fighting this fight like the Pascal fight where you were very aggressive or do you paln on fighting more of a technical fight?
Bernard Hopkins (12:37 PM)
Technical fight would be boring, but I'll fight a smart fight and entertaining fight on my end.
Chris (Philadelphia)
What fight in your amazing career do you consider your toughest? And what fight do you consider your best performance?
Bernard Hopkins (12:38 PM)
There are a lot of them. I can't answer that.
Justin (Kentucky)
Bernard, what is the one thing you would say is the reason you have been in the game for so long, at your age, and still on top of your game.
Bernard Hopkins (12:38 PM)
Lifestyle.
Ry (OH)
BHop, should we expect your first KO since Tito on Saturday? Good luck and God bless.
Bernard Hopkins (12:38 PM)
I'm really pushing for it. You can't hope for it. You have to make it happen. Yes. Yes. I'm pushing real hard to make it happen. I'm due. Past due, as a matter of fact.
Justin (Kentucky)
Will we see BHop as a trainer one day after you hang up the gloves for good?
Bernard Hopkins (12:39 PM)
No. More as being in boxing in the business part that I am in with Golden Boy Promotion. More in the business side than as a trainer.
Scott (Raleigh)
Congrats on changing your style so late in your career and going aggressive on Pascal. Can we expect the same against Dawson? I'd say if we get that, you're going to win by KO!
Bernard Hopkins (12:40 PM)
It wasn't difficult to change my style. I've been known to have multi-styles. That's one reason why I've been in the game for so long, I have had multiple styles. I can adjust in the game real quick. You'll see a lot of things on Saturday. It happens in a round or two where if I have to make an adjustment I will.
Harry J (Houston)
What is your most effective weapon for getting past the reach advantage?
Bernard Hopkins (12:41 PM)
Well, if you just look at common sense, if I'm playing basketball and I'm a guard, I'm not going to shoot outside on Wilt Chamberlain, a 7-footer, he'll just swat it down. But if an Allen Iverson goes to the basket to drive, I think you'll figure it out. I gave some knowledge with that question there. I hope you figure.
Bernard Hopkins (12:42 PM)
I hope everybody enjoys the fight come this Saturday. That's why you should buy the PPV. I hope this is a fight on my end, and I hope on Chad's end that will be in the running for fight of the year when it's all over. Check out my Twitter @TheRealBHop.
