Mark "Guru" Garrow (2:57 PM)
Good afternoon everyone...from soggy North Carolina let's get this partaaaayyyy started!
Bill Scott (Lake Summerset, Illinois)
Hell-o Mark, There's a blip on the radar! Oh, it's the 17! I'm loaded with Fords and am first in my league! Will the Fords team up and have a cooling advantage this weekend? Are you looking past Talladega to Martinsville putting your team together this weekend? Will the 4 continue to run up front even with the distraction of Red Bull's uncertain future. One more question, are you getting around better and when will you be back at the track? Thank- you for all your input and Garage Pass which I listen to daily. Chat with you Sunday, Bill
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:02 PM)
Thanks for the shout out Bill...First doing well and getting used to all the titanium and was back at the track last week at Charlotte doing the broadcast of the Bank of America 500. As for Talladega there's really no ryhyme or reason to it, but I do think the Hendrick cars had a little more in the spring than anyone else. That should help all four of their drivers and their satellite team over at Stewart-Haas. As for Kahne, I'm not sure he and Vickers can keep up this weekend and Red Bull's short track deal has been suspect too...I think the Fords will be decent with Edwards and Biffle teaming up again like they did back in April...That might allow Ragan to make some noise like he did at Daytona, but who's his partner? Probably Kenseth, but maybe Bayne.
Nick Rolando (Orlando)
Mark, got to say that I am thinking of the Wheldon family/friends through the tragedy at Las Vegas last Sunday. Such a tragedy. For 'Dega this wk I have on Y!: 29-43-88-21 and on ESPN: 29-24-88-16-21. BTW, the 9 of Ambrose is a good pick the rest of the yr and a Chase sleeper next year Mark.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:05 PM)
No one who saw that wreck surely doesn't have Dan Wheldon and his young family on their mind. It is a tragedy of epic proportions and the most horrific crash I have ever seen in my 30 plus years in this business. Your Y team has a big question mark in Bayne, but he might be able to come through and then you could be in decent shape Nick...I guess the same goes for the ESPN game.
Don (Kenosha, wi)
If it's against the rules to push someone on the last lap, how come they can do it this weekend?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:06 PM)
I guess that is only illegal if the car being pushed is out of gas...You can count on some serious pushing at Talladega Sunday.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Did you knew Dan Wheldon who was Killed at Las Vegas in the IZOD IndyCar Series World Championship at the age of 33 on Sunday October 16?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:07 PM)
No Chris I didn't personally know him, but had seen him race several times and he was very, very good. Sometimes racing can seem senseless to you when you lose a guy that young with a wife and two very small kids, two years old and two months..Life is fragile everybody.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who do you think will win the Good Sam Club 500 at Talledega?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:08 PM)
I'm thinking Kevin Harvick has won one of the last three races and been in position to win the other two so I'm going with him.
Big Bill (Myrtle Beach)
Good Afternoon! I am thinking about dropping #31 for #00 to clear up some cap space. How much drop off in points for the rest of the segment do you see? Look like the both are 20th place cars. If I drop Burton I can pick Harvick up for the rest of the segment or I can keep 31 and go with 24 who has done nothing in the chase! Thanks for the HELP!!
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:09 PM)
I would have been against that trade a couple of weeks ago Bill because I thought Burton had turned into a low budget guy who could give you a top-15 finish...but lately his fortunes are going the other way and I agree he's more like a top-20 car these days. Reutimann's plate stats are a litle better than Burton's as well.
anybody need go? 99,29,17,14,2,48,4,16
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:10 PM)
There's no bow-wows there...but I'm not sure really what Kahne will have in this race..should be good for all the rest after that though.
Mona Lisa (Hidden Valley)
Hello, Please pick a team for the rest of the segment 00-29 or 31-24. I have the rest of my team locked in. THANKS!!
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:11 PM)
Mona you've got me moaning...but hey dare to be great and go with 00-29....but 31-24 should be safer and about the same points.
what happened to chat? just stopped
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:33 PM)
I don't know what happened either Dave..First I had all these folks and then boom no one.
Hey Guru - How're you doing? Pretty awesome the way you've stayed in the game through-out this whole ordeal - I'm sure a lot of us headed in the "replacements parts" direction have been watching carefully - you've been a great role-model. Thanks. Now, locked with the 99, 48, 17, 31, and 6 and can only gain cap space by dropping one big guy & going down to a lessor-priced Big Guy, feeling like the only thing to do right now is stand pat....????
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:39 PM)
Thanks for the props Joanie...but when your self-employed you had better keep working no matter what right?..lol...Joanie that's a pretty good team. But I will say this Kenseth hasn't done much at Talladega or Martinsville lately so if you're going to trade I think he's the guy.. Then maybe drop down to a Tony Stewart (22.0) or a Greg Biffle (19.9) or Mark Martin (19.1) and that might allow you to bump off Burton to improve your team a little..You can also make arguement that your current team is as good as any going in to Dega..I'm a Kenseth fan again beginning at Texas.
Hello Mark - Need to make up some points this week. What are your thoughts on Kyle Busch? I think a lot of folks will take Harvick.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:41 PM)
I agree Thomas a lot of folks will take Harvick because he's almost won the last three races at Talladega. I think Kyle will be stronger than some folks expect, but can Hamlin push him all day and keep him in contention or Logano? That's a big question mark.
I know you don't have a crystal ball, Guru - but do you think Gilliland will find a good "dance partner" and make some noise? As I recall, Smoke and he were very happy together for a plate race or two, but with Smoke in the chase, he may be changing his dance card.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:53 PM)
Believe it or not, Gilliland has scored the second most amount of points this year in the plate races and at number one is Paul Menard. Bet somebody they know the answer to who's scored the first and second most amount of points in plate races going into Talladega? They'll never come up with the right answer because it is so wacky...I don't think Tony will need Gilliland unless something happens to Newman..otherwise Newman plays wingman and goes where Tony goes...even into the parking lot if that's Smoke heads...lol...Gilliland could help one of odd men out, whoever that turns out to be. You can be sure at least one top guy will be left without a partner.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:55 PM)
Joanie...trying your answer again I don't know what's going on....Believe it or not, Gilliland has scored the second most amount of points this year in the plate races and at number one is Paul Menard. Bet somebody they know the answer to who's scored the first and second most amount of points in plate races going into Talladega? They'll never come up with the right answer because it is so wacky...I don't think Tony will need Gilliland unless something happens to Newman..otherwise Newman plays wingman and goes where Tony goes...even into the parking lot if that's Smoke heads...lol...Gilliland could help one of odd men out, whoever that turns out to be. catch 22 (md)
Kurt Busch was saying the cars were slower because the engineers toned down the speed? Is this even possible? Why would they do that?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:59 PM)
If your talking about the EFI or Electronic Fuel Injected engineers can do a lot of different things to those babies...slow them down..improve fuel mileage...all out speed...throttle response..EFI engine hopes up a bunch of new things.
have ya got top 30 rankings?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:00 PM)
Sure do Dave..... Here's my best guestimate...1.Kevin Harvick2.Clint Bowyer3.Jimmie Johnson4.Jeff Gordon5.Dale Earnhardt, Jr.6.Carl Edwards7.Tony Stewart8.Greg Biffle9.Ryan Newman10.Mark Martin11.Paul Menard12.Brad Keselowski13.Kurt Busch14.Kyle Busch15.David Ragan16.Joey Logano17.Denny Hamlin18. The whole nature of the two-car-train races makes it impossible to even know what questions to ask until a person can see practice and get an idea of who is pairing up with who because, you can't really ask about One car or driver, you have think in pairs- heehee, you're going to be totally over-run on Sunday's chat, after people see practice and qualifying....Good Luck!
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:01 PM)
Yes, Sunday morning will be crazy and you know what...given the beast it's going to be crazy trying to get your arms around something that has always and only been described as unpredictable...Good luck? Yeah, I'll need a big dose of that or it's back to being Goober Garrow..lol
Paul (Stockton, CA)
Hi Mark, how is the Rehab of your hip? Nascar has made several positide changes this year to the chase, point system, and qualifing procedures. What are your thoughts on the change to front spoiler. Like the old cars, the speed of the COT cars seem to be creating no touch or phantom spins. Does Nascar need to go back to the old front spoiler?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:03 PM)
Hip is doing pretty well Paul..starting to limp around now without a cane and thanks for asking...I really don't know what to tell you about the cars. They are just so darn stable anymore it's almost impossible to spin one out unless you put yourself in a hopeless situation like Johnson did at Charlotte. I'd like to see the cars loosened up more..We'd find out who the real drivers are and a few more crashes mean a few more yellows and perhaps less fuel milage battles.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:05 PM)
Sorry for whatever the confusion was today..every once in awhile gremlins always get in the system..The race day chat from Talladega will take place at 11:30 eastern Sunday morning and I hope you can join us then...Until then may the force be with you and you have a great week..Sad to say but must "The Guru has left the building..again very slowly..but he has left the building!"
