Chat with Randy Mueller
Randy Mueller (3:01 PM)
Hey guys...I'm ready to talk some football...lets get going.
Sesh (Fairfax, VA)
Randy - what are your thoughts on Vikes? do you think they have what it takes to make it to the superbowl? their defense is vastly improved from last year and they are gelling very well as a strong offensive unit. it would nice to know your comments!
Randy Mueller (3:03 PM)
I like what the Vikings have done so-far...whats not to like?...I do think they have some issues in the secondary that may eventually be exposed but if they can continue to score 30 a game nobody will notice.
Randy: Is Tampa is position to re-sign Sapp, or would it put them in "Cap Jail?"
Randy Mueller (3:04 PM)
I would think if they were going to sign him they would have already...Rich McKay will never let them get in cap jail so I would trust he'll do the right thing.
Chris (austin TX)
Randy, What is your read on the RB situation in Atlanta. I love TJ Duckett! Do you see him taking on a larger role for the rest of the season like he did last week?
Randy Mueller (3:06 PM)
Maybe but I don't see him as being the answer...they need to add some speed and play making ability to that offense...he'll slug them out some yards between the tackles but I don't see him making many big plays...They may have some even bigger issues on defense.'
Do you think the Patriots? problems running the ball over the past several years is the running backs or the offensive line? It seems to me that teams who run effectively year-to-year have great offensive line play/coaching. Denver, for example, has had terrific success and I think this is largely attributable to the o-line, not the running backs. In three consecutive years, three different running backs had great seasons (Davis, Gary, and Anderson). I think it is safe to say that neither Gary nor Anderson is a great back. Your thoughts?
Randy Mueller (3:08 PM)
I hear what your saying but the Bronco's blocking philosophy and schemes are totally different than the Pats...Denvers techniques are borderline when it comes to playing by the rules...I think the Pats need to find a way to inject some speed and quickness into the RB position...Faulk might be the only one with these attributes...I don't think they are geting mush push at the line of scrimmage as well.
Jim (Hancock MI.)
Randy, who do you think has the better overall defense this year, Tampa Bay or Carolina?
Randy Mueller (3:10 PM)
I'd put Tampa slightly ahead of them because of their secondary and LB's...but Carolina is the team on the rise...
John (Santa Barbara)
How will the Rams avoid a controversy when Kurt Warner is looking to get traded but the rams can't do it because of cap reasons.
Randy Mueller (3:12 PM)
Maybe Kurt is willing to pay some money back for his freedom...like that happens in this day and age...I see him staying right there for another year or until they have to pay Bulger...probably another reason why his wife shouldn't be commenting.
Steve (Houston, TX)
Is what Capers did in the last 2 seconds of the game that corageous? It seems to have gotten a lot of national attention.
Randy Mueller (3:14 PM)
I think it was a nice jesture to his team...they can use it as a confidence builder...the coach believes in them,etc...but I really don't think he had anything to lose...they aren't going anywhere and another loss wasn't going to kill them...no if a coach made that call coming down the stretch in a playoff run....then we've got a curageous coach...
Matt (Boston, MA)
Randy, I'm always surprised when teams draft players that are 24 or 25 years old in the early rounds. Is a player's age something a GM thinks about when drafting? I'm thinking of Dallas Clark and Terrance Newman, both good players, but maybe only around for 4-5 years in the league?
Randy Mueller (3:18 PM)
Age definatley is a factor...at least it is with me...I really liked getting a Junior who came out early as opposed to a 5th year senior...the thinking is maybe you give up a year or two early with the player but gain it on the back end with a longer logevity...'you make a very valid point although most coaches probably wouldn't look beyond 5-6 years anyway...thats an eternity in NFL year.
Gus ( San Gabriel)
Randy , If Dick Vermeil leads K.C. to a SuperBowl title ...will he go down as one of the greatest coaches in NFL history?
Randy Mueller (3:20 PM)
He'd have to go into the top 2 or 3 for sure...his leadership skills are unquestioned and his ability to communicate with people 40 years younger is amazing...if we all had the same ability to deal with kids these days the world would be a better place...he's one of those guys who probably could have sucseeded in any form of business he had wanted to go into...
Mike (New York)
Randy, can Byron Leftwich, if given the starting spot for the remainder of the season, be an effective QB? He has the size and the skill set, but as a rookie, you have to question his ability to read NFL defenses.
Randy Mueller (3:23 PM)
I wouldn't have any questions about Leftwich...I think he's going to be a great player...he's going to make some mistakes like last week but reading coverage, poise in the pocket, making all the throws are going to be his strengths by the end of the year...the Jags aren't going to make a playoff run at any rate this year so why not play him and get that much more ready for next year.
Randy, As a former GM, how would you have dealt with the Terrell Owens situation? Seems to me, as talented as he is, you need to do more than what San Fran is doing or risk losing the respect of your players.
Randy Mueller (3:25 PM)
Its nothing new with Owens...trouble is the same players your talking about want to all win and they know TO gives them a chance to do so...I think he's going to be on double secret probation, to steal a movie phrase, but if anything else happens they will be much tougher on him...I think the fact that they havn't signed him to any extention as of yet might be a look in to the future of what they might be thinking long term.
Joe (The Bronx)
Randy, when are we gonna see Carson Palmer. The Bungles are goin no where this year. Why not give the kid a shot?
Randy Mueller (3:28 PM)
Joe...I think the Bengals still think Jon Kitna gives them the best chance of winning right now...I think Palmers days are going to have to wait awhile...look at it this way...Marvin Lewis is trying to change the culture around the Bengals...trying to do that and break in a rookie QB might be contradicting each other right now...One step at a time...Palmers chance will come later.
Is Dick Jauron on "double secret probation"? Should he be?
Randy Mueller (3:30 PM)
I look at these situations as the coach and the GM together...did Dick put this team together ?...Sure the coach has to get the most out of his players but that is not the most talented group in the league, thats for sure...They are only 3 games in and I know thats tough for fans...give em' a few more weeks...
marc (BG, OH)
Randy, is Bill Bidwell really that bad of an owner? Do you think he will ever spend money on his football team?
Randy Mueller (3:33 PM)
I don't know Mr. Bidwell personally but do know his some Michael. He seems like he is getting more and more involved which is a good sign for Cardnail fans....I'm not sure why the 12 mil available under the cap...they could have probably spent some of this on players...the whole culture there is bad at present...with a new stadium coming on like it will be interesting to see what direction they go in the future...they need more players on defense for sure.
Randy, come back to football, help our lions. but seriously, are you looking to get back into the NFL or are you "done"?
Randy Mueller (3:35 PM)
I'm only 42 so I'm sure at some point the NFL will be in my future again...I've reallly enjoyed the year off but after 20 years in the league it's in my blood...there is no better place than espn though...
Billy (New Orleans)
Do you think Aaron Brooks is the leader that the Saints need to turn things around on offense? Especially in light of the horrendous start.
Randy Mueller (3:38 PM)
I think Aaron's leadership skills have been challenged..his laughing and smileing on the sidelines last week in their blowout loss to the Colts was hard to watch...I know he's a great kid but losing can't be that much fun...I'd like to see him take it personnally and step up and be accountable...he has all the skills to be a star but the intangibles are missing at present...
Joe (New York)
Can the Rams over come Faulk's injury and unrest caused by Warner's wife to reach the playoffs?
Randy Mueller (3:39 PM)
I think they can...if they continue to make the effort to run the ball they will be fine...I do have concerns with their secondary though and this may in the end be their unraveling...
Jamie (Pueblo, CO)
Randy...earlier, you mentioned Denver's blocking schemes...how are they illegal? I understand the zone blocking aspect, but not the rule violations...
Randy Mueller (3:41 PM)
It's the chopping and throwing on the back of defenders legs that get people fired up...I'm not saying it's illegal but it has been pointed out to the league by many opponents...I give them credit for making it work.
J Moon (Seattle)
Randy, Is Mike Holmgren off the hotseat now? If he takes the 'Hawks to the playoffs but stumbles in the first game again, is he right back on?
Randy Mueller (3:43 PM)
I think Mike has proved he can coach. Idon't think Paul Allen wants to write a check for 20 million and start over...that was evident last year...make no mistake about it though Mike still runs the show...and they need a win in the playoffs for everybody to agree the ship has been righted...
Randy, I have been wondering what has happened to the Bills these last few games, was the first two games just a fluke?
Randy Mueller (3:45 PM)
The absense of a running game is the obvious but I also think teams have been able to pressure Bledsoe so that he's been inacurate or holding the ball to long and taking sacks...I also think that outside of Moulds they have receivers who struggle to get away from Man-to-man coverage...this could be an issue if teams continue to lock them up and press them at the line of scrimmage like Miami makes a living doing...
With the team that the Vikings have got can we go all the way this year? Can Mike Tice and company lead us to the promise land?
Randy Mueller (3:46 PM)
Like Isaid earlier I like what they have done...if they can stay injury free they have a chance...they are very thin on defense.
Thanks for the great work...Do you agree with the Vikes getting rid of TE Chamberlain? Could they have somehow got a draft pick out of the deal? Even a low rounder would seem better than nothing...
Randy Mueller (3:51 PM)
They may have been able to but his salary was up there and it was known that he had come back over weight and out of shape...I think Mike Tice being in charge there wanted to send a message to his team first and formost that this is not acceptable...he probably didn't consider the trade option...the trade would have also added some unamitorized signing bonus to the Viks cap that they might not have wanted to count this year as well...just some thought.
Randy, with the Raiders easy schedule to you see them in the playoffs again?
Randy Mueller (3:52 PM)
I see them as being very fortunate to be 2-2 and still in the playoff run...they need Jerry Porter back bad...they still have a chance at a wide card stop in my mind...
Matt (Tampa, Fl
How much, if any, pressure is on Tony Dungy to return to Tampa on Monday night and win?
Randy Mueller (3:54 PM)
I don't think there is much pressure at all...sure it would be nice but he's built up some good chips by starting out with some big wins...he'd be under pressure if he went in at 1-3...he's playing with "house money" now
Andy - Milwaukee
The Packers crushed two weak opponents, but looked awful against an equally weak Cardinals team. Which Pack is for real?
Randy Mueller (3:56 PM)
We'll find out this week when they take on a Seattle team that thinks they are ready for a playoff run...might be one of the better games this week...GB's secondary still scares me and with Seattles 3 WR's it will be intersting...plus you know Hoilmgren will really be game-planning this week to face is former student in Sherman and the home folks in cheese-land.
Jim Anchower (Madison, WI)
Randy, how does a guy get a sweet gig in the NFL like being a GM? I don't see any classes on this at college?
Randy Mueller (3:57 PM)
Ha...I also told people "being in the wrong stop at the wrong time"...ha...your right you can't read about it in the How to be a GM book...
chris (san antonio)
Randy, what do you make of the Indy defense. Their pass stats look great, but is that merely a reflection of a poor run D?
Randy Mueller (3:59 PM)
I think the pass rush they have generated on the corners has been excellent...not only Freeney but the others as well...I also think that once they have gotten ahead they have settled into their coverage 2 package which teams attack with the dink and dunk...that helps take away big plays
Han (Charlotte, NC)
Randy, What did you think about the matchup between Moss vs. Owens? Did Randy make a point about who is the best receiver in the game?
Randy Mueller (4:01 PM)
He sure did...I think he red where people were saying how good TO was etc...he took it personally and ate up those 5'9" coerners from SF.
Randy Mueller (4:02 PM)
Thats it for today guys...sorry I couldn't get to more but I'm typing as fast as I can at the expense of spelling and puncuation...ha..thanks for chatting..see ya next week.
