Chat with Jake Trotter
Welcome to SoonerNation! On Monday, writer Jake Trotter stops by to chat about everything Oklahoma.
Trotter joined ESPN.com in 2011 after four years with The Oklahoman covering OU and Big 12 football. Before that, he worked at the Austin American-Statesman and Middletown (Ohio) Journal. Trotter grew up in Oklahoma City and graduated from Washington & Lee (Va.) University.
Send your questions now and join Trotter Monday at 4 p.m. ET!
I was terribly saddened to hear about Bob Berry. He was an excellent sportscaster and fun to listen to.
Jake Trotter (4:01 PM)
Let's get started...Yeah, very sad. I got to know Bob Sr. fairly well over the last few years. One thing I can say, he always had a smile on his face, was always making a joke. One of the nicest people I've ever met.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Happy Halloween!! What Oklahoma College Football Players will Play in the NFL in 2012?
Jake Trotter (4:03 PM)
Ryan Broyles and Jamell Fleming for sure. Travis Lewis needs to get healthy -- his stocked has dropped because of the foot injury, but he still has a chance. Frank Alexander has a chance to be a really good player. And I actually think James Hanna could help someone out as a flex tight end. Ronnell Lewis and Landry Jones, too, obviously, if they decide to leave early.

Can ou still play for bcs championship What needs to happen
Jake Trotter (4:05 PM)
OU can definitely still play for a title. The way I see it, three things need to happen.1. OU has to win out2. Stanford has to lose3. The Alabama-LSU loser needs to get blown out this weekend, or lose another gameIf all three things happen, OU will be in New Orleans.

do you think ou needs to get back to basics? although it was animpressive when it seemed there was alot of missed tackles, bad angles, and not wrapping up.
Jake Trotter (4:06 PM)
Yeah, it was sloppy in the first half. This has been a pretty decent tackling team. I'm sure that's something Venables/Stoops will be addressing this week, especially with Cyrus Gray/Christine Michael coming to town this week.
Steve (Moore, OK)
Will we be seeing more of Blake Bell and the Wildcat?
Jake Trotter (4:07 PM)
I held a Twitter contest to name this formation, and Bell-Dozer Formation won out. Bell signed off on it, so that's what I'm going to be calling it for the rest of the season.I think we will be seeing more of it, though mostly around the goal line. It worked well there. Not sure it's a good idea to take the ball out of Landry Jones' hands elsewhere on the field, though, and that showed up Sat.
Travis (Longview, Texas)
Why haven't we seen much of Brennan Clay? Is he in the doghouse or is he still not 100 percent?
Jake Trotter (4:09 PM)
No, he's not in the doghouse. His lack of playing time comes down to health (shoulder), and the fact that the other backs like Roy Finch have played well. With Dom Whaley done for the season, I expect Clay to get 5-10 touches this weekend and continue to be more of a factor.
Hey Jake, what are the chances we see Fleming back on the field this week versus A&M?
Jake Trotter (4:10 PM)
Very good. Brent Venables said after the K-State game that he expected Fleming to be ready to go against A&M, and that he was almost ready to play against K-State.
Is Jaz Reynolds a legitimate NFL prospect? He has passed Trey Franks IMO.
Jake Trotter (4:12 PM)
My buddy Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman wrote that very same thing today. I agree with him. Reynolds is showing a lot of ability the last 4-5 games. Reynolds has great hands, and good speed. If he can just gain some strength he has a chance to be a very good player, with a shot in the NFL.Reynolds has passed Franks. After Sat., maybe Dejuan Miller, too. Franks hasn't been the same player since serving a 2-game suspension after the opener.
C Trevino (McAllen, TX)
If the Sooners WIN OUT, who would you think the Sooners would most want to play, BAMA or LSU?
Jake Trotter (4:13 PM)
I think Alabama is the better team, but playing LSU in the SuperDome is a nightmare scenario. For that reason, the Sooners would rather play Bama.
Brett (Saudi Arabia)
Trot, from the best info I could find, Ryan Broyles is about 500 yds away from setting the all-time NCAA FBS career rec yards record. I haven't heard anyone mention it. Is this flying under the radar or is it too early to be news?
Jake Trotter (4:16 PM)
You're correct, Broyles is about 500 yards away. I think he's got a great shot to break it.
John (Pasadena, CA)
Has Heupel abandoned the Diamond formation or will we see it later in the season?
Jake Trotter (4:17 PM)
It's possible we see it again. Heupel could be saving it for the OSU game. But I doubt it. I think if OU was going to use, they would have by now. And with Whaley out, not sure the formation makes sense anymore.
Sadieogrady (Oklahoma City, OK)
Does Dom Whaley have any type of 'school insurance' to cover his injury or is he on his own?
Jake Trotter (4:18 PM)
Yes, the school will be covering Whaley's medical insurance. Walk-ons get hurt all the time, and if the school didn't cover their medical costs, many couldn't afford to be on the team.
Austin Haywood back with the team?
Jake Trotter (4:20 PM)
As of Sat. night, I was told that he wasn't officially back. Stoops will get asked about it tonight. I'm sure that if Stoops does agree to take him back, there will be some parameters in place, and things he'll have to do first.
Do you think OU can beat OSU in Stillwater (probably) at night again?
Curtis (McAllen, Texas)
Is OSU really that good? Have they been tested? Why with a weak strength of schedule are they ranked like that?
Jake Trotter (4:23 PM)
Weak strength of schedule? Oklahoma State is No. 1 in 5 of the 6 computer polls because its schedule is so good. The Cowboys are really good, in fact, outside Bama or LSU, they appear to be as good as anyone in the country. Can OU win? Sure. But the Sooners will have to play their best football to do it.
Jake Trotter (4:25 PM)
Thanks for the questions guys. That's all the time we have for this edition of the OU football chat. If you didn't get a question in, send it to the SoonerNation mailbag. I'll be back here same time, same place next week.
