Edward Aschoff (12:03 PM)
Hey, guys. Lots of interesting stuff to get to in the SEC. Let's get cranking.
What is your opinion on a rematch? Based on the recent poll release how confident are you that it would happen if both Oklahoma State and Stanford lose a game?
Edward Aschoff (12:05 PM)
I would be in favor of it IF LSU and Alabama are the two best teams at the end of the year. Obviously, we won't know without a playoff, so since we have the BCS, if both teams win out, I don't see what the big deal would be. I'm tired of people saying that it's unfair. Or that these two teams already played. We see it happen all the time in every other sport. To punish Alabama at the end of the season because it lost 9-6 to the No. 1 team is ridiculous in my eyes. I don't see another team out there on either of these teams' level right now. And the unfair chant about LSU having to beat Bama twice is silly too. The LSU players have already said they wouldn't care. They want to play the best. Alabama is that team.
Where do you see the Hogs ending up in the Bowl picture if they are able to win out, including a big win at LSU?
Edward Aschoff (12:08 PM)
Oh, gosh. That would make things pretty interesting. It would all come down to where they are in the BCS standings. Honestly, I'm not sure. You would think that if the Hogs win out they'll be in the national championship (if they get in to the SEC championship by working through the craziness of the three-way-tie situation), but I could see the computers still hurting the Arkansas. Maybe Oregon wins out an helps LSU and the Tigers jump back into the picture. Or Alabama doesn't fall enough and the Hogs don't even make it into the SEC title game. A lot could happen if the Hogs win out.
Will (St. Petersburg, Fl)
Ed. Whats up. A big Ole Miss fan am I. Just got the news that Coach nutt will not be back next year and even better, the bafoon Pete Boone will not be back. Thank goodness. So, who do you think will replace Coach Nutt. John Gruden maybe? Who knows?
Edward Aschoff (12:10 PM)
It's still way too early to tell, but if Boone is staying on to help with the search, don't you think that is counter productive? He's done enough. I think you could hear Mike Leach's name come up. But right now it's all about finding the pieces around him to help this program. The AD switch is something that might need to come sooner rather than later ...
How did Arkansas get shafted in the BCS polls beat #9 and drop?? Please explain1
Edward Aschoff (12:12 PM)
Computers have obviously never been to Penguin Ed's or chilled on Dickson St. Oregon moved up in the computer rankings because of the LSU win, which pushed Arkansas back.
Dave (Gainesville, FL)
With another John Brantley injury and the Gator's season being a complete bust will they sit Brantley for the year and let the freshman battle out for the starting spot next year?
Edward Aschoff (12:13 PM)
I think it is time for Florida to just totally open up the playbook and have some fun. The Gators can't accomplish so they might as well try to ruin someone else's season, right? I say keep Brantley in as long as he is healthy. He has earned it. As bad as the offense has played, this team is better with him in it. I don't think it's time to totally throw in the towel and start a frosh again. Neither has done well this season, in my opinion.
Does Kentucky have a chance to go bowling? Lets here a % estimate?
Edward Aschoff (12:15 PM)
Yes. After a rough, rough year, Kentucky can actually still make it. The Wildcats still have Vandy, Georgia and Tennessee. Kentucky could win two of those games, and hey, maybe Georgia gets a little overconfident. Beating Vandy and UT would send the Wildcats bowling. But it's gonna be a tough three-game stretch for this team.
Let's assume UGA wins the East. That D is quite good. Not LSU/Bama good but solid. And the O is coming around. What's to say they can't give LSU a fight in the Dome?
Edward Aschoff (12:17 PM)
There will be a fight in the first quarter ... for a little bit. I just don't see Georgia' offense matching LSU's speed on defense. Long afternoon for Aaron Murray against that defense.
UGA vs. Auburn, what's the key in this game? I know Auburn won last year, but we HAVE won 4 of the last 5, if i recall correctly.
Edward Aschoff (12:19 PM)
Force Georgia to make mistakes. If UGA turns it over, Auburn can hang. I think that Clint Moseley is really starting to come around as a starter. I think Auburn will hang around in this game, especially if South Carolina wins because Georgia will have to win this game and might come out tight.
Hey, do you think player of the year in the SEC could go to a defensive player? If so do you think that Mississippi State cornerback Jonathan Banks is deserving? I saw him play against South Carolina and Auburn and is without a doubt the best DB in the SEC.
Edward Aschoff (12:21 PM)
He is extremely talented and hasn't received a lot of attention this year. I think that's because of Mississippi State's season, really. He has defended 13 passes and has five interceptions. He might have some more if not for some drops here and there. You'll hear his name called on Sundays. I'm not sure if he'd get defensive player of the year or player of the year at this point. There are a few guys ahead of him in both categories.
Steve (Tampa, FL)
Why do you consider Georgia better than Auburn? They have played a joke of a SEC schedule this year with has resulted in the position they are in. Auburn is 8-1 right now with there schedule.
Edward Aschoff (12:23 PM)
We'll find out Saturday. Hey, you never know if Auburn would have that schedule. Maybe the Tigers get overconfident. Who knows. Right now, I think Georgia is the better team because it has a better defnese and the offense is more consistent, but Auburn certainly has a chance this weekend.
Ed, a couple of weeks ago you were not sold on the Hogs being ranked number 10. After your trip to Fayetteville this weekend how do you feel about them and there chances of beating LSU at the end of the season.
Edward Aschoff (12:24 PM)
The offense and defense finally played like the team I expected to see at the beginning of the year. Tyler Wilson was slinging the ball around like he was playing catch and the defense was fast and aggressive. I felt Jake Bequette's hit up in the press box ... no wonder there was an EARTHQUAKE felt in the press box after the game. When that offense is going it's hard to stop, but I still think this team needs to run the ball more consistently. Against that fast LSU defense, if the Hogs can't run, they won't win. LSU has the athletes to keep up with those WRs and the line to hurt the Hogs up front.
Mizzou Doug (Kansas City)
Happy to be joining a conference of stability! With Mizzou going to the East conference, who do you expect their plus 1 to be, T A&M or Arkansas?
Edward Aschoff (12:26 PM)
Welcome! Always good to have another group of Tigers in the league. Plus, you have a great journalism school ... and we know how much fans love journalists. I think Texas A&M will be your permanent SEC West team. Makes since to keep that going.
Edward, if Georgia beats Auburn and Auburn loses to Alabama, it will mean that Georgia will win the East without beating a single SEC team with a winning conference record. Has that ever happened before?
Edward Aschoff (12:26 PM)
Weird, huh? Step it up SEC East!
so who's gonna replace Houston Nutt? Kirby Smart? Mike Leach?
Edward Aschoff (12:27 PM)
Never thought about Kirby Smart. Let's start that rumor!
Seems to me that the east teams are all playing for the opportunity to get pounded by LSU in the Ga Dome. So does Jefferson get his starting job back?
Edward Aschoff (12:29 PM)
I believe that the winner of the East will have some lovely parting gifts for it after the title game. LSU is going to be too much for either UGA or South Carolina. Just too fast on defense. I still think Lee starts, but we will see more of a split during the games from here on out. No need to bench Lee. He brought LSU this far.
Ian (Columbia, SC)
Ed, have you heard anything about connor shaw's concussion? looked like a helmet to helmet hit to me.
Edward Aschoff (12:30 PM)
No word yet, but I don't think it was a dirty hit. I think the hit was within the rules. People are going to get hurt, but it didn't look dirty to me.
As an LSU fan I'm getting quite nervous about the crowing of LSU already... I mean, how many times have we seen a team that was supposed to be a lock stumble down the road. LSU could lose to Ark (Black Friday game is always tough) or a Georgia team in their backyard... Does it seem like the Tigers are getting setup for failure?
Edward Aschoff (12:31 PM)
It could happen. But remember when LSU lost two games and went the national championship? That could happen again. It will be tough if the Tigers don't make it to the SEC championship, but if they do and they win, they'll be right back in the national championship. Les Miles knows how to coach his team through all of this. I think LSU will be fine mentally.
Casey (Ft Stewart, GA)
How can you honestly sit there and say that UGA won't winn after the 1st quarter? And how can you say that the UGA D won't be in the backfield against there O-line? Do you forget about Jarvis Jones, the SEC Sack/TFL leader alongside Rambo , the SEC INT leader? These Dawgs are very fast and play with a chip on there shoulder every week...last one for you if you post this...Remember 2005 SECCG with the same teams, same coaches?
Edward Aschoff (12:33 PM)
You forget how fast LSU's defense is. Plus, the offense did well against New Mexico State and if not for some Florida blunders, Georgia might not pull it out a couple of weeks. Remember, Murray was 0-for-10 at one point in the second half. This team has its problems, but it is playing the best of any East team. The key word there is EAST ... Also, LSU has one of the best offensive lines in the country.
Andy (Macon, GA)
Ed, what are the odds the SEC East leader makes it to the Sugar Bowl if they lose in ATL? Does Bama or Ark need to lose or both?
Edward Aschoff (12:34 PM)
No way. A three-loss SEC title loser won't make it in the BCS.
Do you think there is a chance Alabama looses its motivation for the rest of the season and struggles against Miss St and Auburn? Maybe even loosing one or both games.
Edward Aschoff (12:35 PM)
Absolutely not. As long as Nick Saban is in charge this team will only be hungrier. Those players have to be angry with what happened. I think you'll see a pretty energized Alabama team from here on out, especially with its goals still there.
Does this win mean that Miles officially owns Alabama? 5-2. This coming from a die-hard Bama fan.
Edward Aschoff (12:35 PM)
He owned Tuscaloosa Saturday night. I honestly think that he out-coached Saban at times. How about The Hat?
Brent (The Swamp)
Hey Edward, sorry to bombard you - I gotta have some input on the gators! How do we look against FL. State and South Carolina!
Edward Aschoff (12:37 PM)
It's gonna be tough if this team continues to play so tight. Muschamp, Weis and the players need to loosen up from here on out. If Florida wants to beat South Carolina or Florida State they can't play like they did against Georgia or Vandy. This team needs to relax and just throw the ball around.
Jeff (Atlanta, GA)
Do you think Aaron Murray is a bit overrated? I'm still waiting for him to really break out in a game against a decent opponent.
Edward Aschoff (12:38 PM)
I don't think he's overrated at all. This is only his second year and he doesn't exactly have a ton of receiving talent to help him out. His team controls its own destiny in the East and he is a reason.
SECman (new orleans)
with MIZZOU and A&M joining up should the sec re-align and have bama and aubrurn move to the east to make the conference more balanced?
Edward Aschoff (12:39 PM)
Nope. Mizzou in the East works just fine. Balance will come back. It's all cyclical.
If Arkansas beats LSU can my Bama boys make it into the SEC title game if they win out?
Edward Aschoff (12:39 PM)
Yes. If Bama is second to Arkansas in the BCS and within five spots of the Hogs, yes. Crazy, right?
Ron Burgandy (San Diego, CA)
Who do you think wins the FSU-UF game this month?
Edward Aschoff (12:39 PM)
Could be ugly for both teams ...
Carl (Louisville, KY)
Does Steve Kragthorpe get any votes for Offensive-Coordinator-of- the-Year (although he is now the quarterbacks coach) for the job he's done with the LSU offense?
Edward Aschoff (12:40 PM)
Ha. He should get a lot of love for sure. I think he'll be happy with multiple championships more than anything, but he does deserve a lot of love with what he's done with those two quarterbacks.
Richard (rural America)
Do you think Andy Luck could score against the vaunted LSU defense?
Edward Aschoff (12:41 PM)
If any quarterback can, it's luck. However, the speed of the LSU's defense would be too much, if you ask me. I think he'd make plays here and there. He's too good not too. But overall I don't see a win because Stanford just doesn't have the athletes to matchup with LSU.
Looked to me like early in the game (and late also) Saban did not trust his team with all the field goal attempts. What say you?
Edward Aschoff (12:42 PM)
Now, I wouldn't trust them at all. Just a bad performance by those guys. Seriously though, you have to make sure those guys know you have confidence in them now because they are probably lower than they've ever been.
Jessica Liao Lee (Los Angeles, CA)
I am a proud Florida Gator. I am also 28 years old. The average life expectancy of my ilk is 86 years. Florida has 3 national championships, but NEVER had an undefeated season. Do you think my beloved Gators will ever go undefeated in my lifetime?
Edward Aschoff (12:43 PM)
It's hard for teams to do that. We've seen it two straight years and it might happen a third year in a row, but I think winning championships is the most important thing for teams.
Kelly (Annapolis MD)
If the rumor is true that Houston Nutt is gone, I want to start another - Urban Meyer to Coach Ole Miss -
Edward Aschoff (12:44 PM)
Nah. If he comes back it won't be in the SEC.
Excluding Alabama, which team in the mix would give LSU the most problems?
Edward Aschoff (12:45 PM)
Maybe Oklahoma State because of that passing game. We saw West Virgina move the ball on the Tigers with that passing game and the Cowboys might have the most exciting passing game to watch. I think that would be a pretty good matchup. But can the Cowboys keep up with that defensive speed?
Arkansas has won 3 of the last 4 for the Boot, including in Baton Rouge before LSU's 2007 national championship. How excited are you for this game?
Edward Aschoff (12:45 PM)
If Arkansas plays like it did when I saw it up close, this should be a great game. Great offensive speed vs. great defensive speed? Sign me up!
Is it true that Mizzou is coming to the SEC East?
Edward Aschoff (12:46 PM)
Yes. Mike Slive announced that Sunday. Get those plane tickets quick!
John (Hog country )
Hey Ed, do you think MSU has a shot at the upset against Bama? Seems like they have underperformed all year. And they're coming off a bye week. Thanks
Edward Aschoff (12:47 PM)
Honestly, I don't. Alabama is going to be fightin' mad this weekend. I expect to see an energized, upset Alabama team. Mississippi State doesn't have the offense to move the ball against this defense. The Tide is playing for its national championship life right now.
Please post this for the Florida fan Edward. Auburn has 3 undefeated seasons in the last 20 years. We only have one MNC though. I would rather have the 3 championships over the 3 undefeated seasons...
Edward Aschoff (12:48 PM)
Me too. But when I play NCAA if I don't go undefeated I sit and cry. It's rough on me. WIN BABY!
With the recent events at Ole Miss and the new need for a head coach, do you see Ole Miss being able to draw a successful coach away from a currently successful/on the rise program or needing to look at the market of currently unemployed coaches?
Edward Aschoff (12:50 PM)
I think so. Listen, the 2011 class has played a lot this year and has looked good at times. Plus, Mississippi has a lot of talented athletes to pick from. This would be a good job, but there also needs to be patience from the community and the school. I lived in Oxford for 18 years. That program ain't Alabama. It ain't LSU. It ain't Florida. Ole Miss needs to build to that level. It won't get there overnight. The next coach needs to have time to build because you can win at Ole Miss. I know it's hard to believe, but it can be done.
Why does everyone assume that Alabama will win out? If I recall Auburn almost took Alabam's NC hopes away in 09 and it is in Jordan Hare again this go round. Obviously Alabama is the better team but if you look at the history of the Iron Bowl, the better team does not always win. One can never assume the outcome of the IRON BOWL. You talk about a monkey wrench with Arkansas win, what about an Arkansas win and an Auburn win. What happens then?
Edward Aschoff (12:52 PM)
That's why I always say IF. Auburn could pull it off. It's at home, but I think that Alabama will have that win-or-go-home attitude from here on out. It won't be easy for the Tide to win this one. Auburn would love nothing more than to derail the Tide's title hopes.
Kory (Seattle Wa)
As a big Mizzou fan I am looking to plan my away game trip for next season. What SEC East campus do I need to see the most?
Edward Aschoff (12:55 PM)
Oh, man. I went to Florida, so I loved walking around that campus. There are live alligators and the scenery is great. Georgia is beautiful as well. I went there for the first time this year and it was gorgeous. I have to admit that I've been to South Carolina a few times, but I've never really been around campus, so I can't speak on it. I've only been to the stadium. Also, Tennessee's campus is great. That stadium is old, but I love being in it. How about you just go to every away game in the East :)
Add me to the SEC fans who are as unhappy about adding Missouri as we were happy about adding A&M. The Aggies fans were drowning out games with "SEC!! SEC!!" making it clear where they wanted to be. Mizzou, on the other hand, was either publicly lying about its commitment to the Big 12 or privately begging the B1G 10. Mizzou kind of comes across as either a bit classless or sloppy seconds. Didn't slive have any concerns they'll bolt at the first chance to leave for the B1G 10?
Edward Aschoff (12:57 PM)
You have to think about it outside of football. Mizzou brings in the St. Louis and Kansas City markets which means more TV sets and more $$$$. I think that Missouri was honest in where it wanted to go and the SEC jumped at the chance to get Missouri when it had the shot. You can look at it as Mizzou wanting to go somewhere else, but I think it was a good move. Plus, you bring in another AAU school. That makes four.
As an LSU fan I will admit that Les Miles is not a better coach than Nick Saban. But can we finally put to bed the idea that he is inferior to Saban?
Edward Aschoff (12:58 PM)
I would take either coach and wouldn't be upset about it at all. I love how Les is more laid back, but I know that I'm going to win with Saban. There is a gamble with Miles, but that also makes it exciting.
Rick (San Diego)
Ed, I hate to ask this because I truly believe the Non-AQ teams really don't belong in the same sentence in discussing the Championship game with the AQ schools just because of the body of work. But lets just say everyone has one loss except LSU and Boise, maybe it is time to find out does an Non-AQ team deserve a title shot. It would finally answer the question that everyone discussing are they really deserving and if they are then great but if they get their butts beat than this question never needs to come up again. Think about it with kellen moore they will never have a better chance of proving this, what are your thoughts????
Edward Aschoff (1:00 PM)
Hey, I'd be for it, but I'd also be for a rematch if Bama is up there. I could see a one-loss Alabama getting in over an undefeated Boise team. Computers like Bama. We could finally see if Boise in the title game and that would make a ton of people happy -- no matter what happens.
Edward Aschoff (1:01 PM)
Well that was fun. We talked Ole Miss, BCS and Mizzou. Pretty productive Monday in the SEC. Let's do it again soon!
