Johnny is here!
Joanne (Ft. Myers)
Hi Johnny, what does it feel like for professional race car drivers like you and Kyle Busch to have to watch races from the sidelines?
Johnny Benson (12:31 PM)
Real bad. I can say that when you're hurt and you can't drive, it's devastating to watch your car go around the track. In Kyle's case, he was taken out, not hurt, and that's got to be 5 times worse.
James (Rochester, NY)
How did you feel about NASCAR's decision to park Kyle Busch for the rest of the weekend?
Johnny Benson (12:32 PM)
Well, it's a tough question to answer, but probably NASCAR did the right thing. In the same token, why now? There have been plenty of incidents throughout the season that could have parked drivers. I think this one, because it was late in the championship, that was part of it.
Michael Stephens (Man WV)
Was Kyle Busch punished more for reputation or for the act? Was Matt Kenseth more justified than K.B. when he picked Brian Vickers rear wheels off the track. How so?
Johnny Benson (12:32 PM)
You have to look at each individual incident. This was a big one and I'm sure he realizes that now. You just have to deal with the consequences. It could, because of other things that have happened, but I think it was just because of this one incident.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Do you think that Stewart-Haas Racing will find sponsorship & another driver to have the #10 in Sprint Cup Races for the entire 2012 season?
Johnny Benson (12:33 PM)
I feel that they're fairly stable as a race team, especially as a two car team. Moving to a three car team is a hefty task. Hopefully he'll make that happen, but if not, I think they'll be able to run a partial schedule if needed.
So think the penalty time is over for kyle or does coach joe bench him for the rest of the season? I mean same track same bad behaviour when is enough gonna be enough?
Johnny Benson (12:34 PM)
That's something that's probably being discussed over there. I don't believe Joe Gibbs will park him. There may be several meetings, maybe take him out of the Nationwide races, but I don't see them doing anything to take him out of the car.
dz (nowhere, nm)
hey johnny. can you please educate me on when it is okay to wreck someone and not okay!!!! i've been a fan for 11 years now and i still don't understand when it was okay. i'm so consfused and are there rules for when it is okay? thanks.
Johnny Benson (12:35 PM)
In my terms, it's never OK to wreck somebody. Bottom line, point blank, shouldn't do it. I'm not talking about the retaliation, I'm talking about the first part.
Bart (East Bay)
If Dale Sr were still around, do you think he would take Kyle to the woodshed and have a good "coming to Jesus" talk to him. Thanks.
Johnny Benson (12:36 PM)
I don't know. It's hard to say what could happen if that scenario came up. I'm just Kyle talked to a lot of people that came up to him to say something. I'm sure Dale would have been one of those guys.
Chris (Crestview, Fl)
Johnny, you are a Roush man and know how Jack thinks so what do you think he is advising Carl?
Johnny Benson (12:37 PM)
I think Carl and their guys and group have done a tremendous job these last few years. I don't think they need to solve anything, they just need to do what they have been to win this championship. With everything that's happened with Kyle, at least the press hasn't been on the championship guys too much this week.
I see my people's worry about the new point system hurting a driver for a bad day far more than helping him when he wins a race has come true. Tony has 4 wins but in the chase he has scored the same points as Edwards even though he has 4 wins.
Johnny Benson (12:39 PM)
The thing you have to look at, Tony started further down the list than Carl did. He's doing everything he can to move up the ladder and doing a tremendous job. Yeah, maybe they should award more bonus points in the Chase for wins.
Hi Johnny, in these tough economic times do you think parking Kyle Busch was a self-inflicted wound by NASCAR?
Johnny Benson (12:40 PM)
No, no matter what the economy is, by this happening, something needed to be done. If we were in good times or bad times, I think the same result would have come out.
Johnny Benson (12:40 PM)
I don't think this situation will hurt NASCAR. It's created a lot more interest in what's going on.
Zach Cross (Church Hill TN)
Hi JohnnyDo you think JGR will fire Kyle Busch or if he will lose sponsors?
Johnny Benson (12:41 PM)
I would say this incident could possibly put Gibbs Racing at a disadvantage with their sponsors. Being outside of their team, we don't know what's happening behind closed doors, but hopefully they can isolate this incident and move forward.
Steve (Williamsville, NY)
Do you see a day when NASCAR adds a road race to the Chase?
Johnny Benson (12:42 PM)
I could see that happening for sure. It is part of the season and it is part of what it takes to win the championship. Whether it happens or not, I don't know, but I could forsee it happening.
If Stewert loses the championship by a few points is he gonna reget taking himself out of the Infineon race?
Johnny Benson (12:43 PM)
It's easy to go back and find points lost or maybe what you could have done different, the old saying hindsight is 20/20. But I don't think he will look back. It's something to learn and build on, but I don't think you'll go back and say this is what caused it.
The whole JGR team was bad yesterday. Looks like the distraction hurt the team.
Johnny Benson (12:44 PM)
Well, any time you replace a driver that you're used to and fully understand what he wants in a race car it's a scenario that you're not going to like. That was the case this week with the No. 18.
So, who you got, Tony or Carl?
Johnny Benson (12:45 PM)
That one's tough. At the beginning of the Chase, I would say that Carl had the edge over Tony. But based on what we've seen over the last few weeks, Tony's been able to match everything that Carl's done. This should be good.
Frankie (San Antonio)
Did McDowell's run in the #18 prove that Rowdy has been carrying that team on his back all season?
Johnny Benson (12:45 PM)
No. You're putting a driver in there late in the day and has very limited practice. But in the same token, Kyle is one of the best out there and for anybody to jump in that car is big shoes to fill for sure.
So is Hendrick smiling that he let Kyle go and doesn't have to deal with this stuff.
Johnny Benson (12:46 PM)
Well, I don't know the reasonings for the Hendrick-Kyle split. But I'm sure that Hendrick is looking at certain aspects, but I don't think he really cares. He's probably looking at what they're doing as a team in this Chase.
Do you think Hornaday just pushed his luck too far and Kyle just had had enough and wasn't gonna have none of that no more?
Johnny Benson (12:47 PM)
That's exactly what happened. The No. 33 has had a lot of incidents like that and I'm sure Kyle has been through some of them and he blew up. It wasn't the right thing to do, but I'm sure a lot of drivers have run into similar situations before.
Art (San Dimas, CA)
Do you think all the focus on getting #88 back to winning has brought down the performance of the entire HMS organization?
Johnny Benson (12:48 PM)
I don't believe so. The No. 48 runs on their program. The No. 24 runs on their program. Everybody is able to try to build their team off of their success. I don't think that's brought everyone down, the competition's just getting better.
Johnny Benson (12:49 PM)
Thanks for all of the questions. What a great race it was between Carl and Tony. A lot of it being misdirected from the Kyle deal. Hopefully we'll get another great race this weekend as we watch the championship unfold.
